Tempted to get it to experience the Windows 8 OS.

    • +12

      Do it~!

I tried WP8.1 (coming from iOS), haven't looked back since!

      • +19

To be fair, everything is an improvement on iOS. You'd probably even like the firefox phone.

      • +1

I always here about lack of apps and it seems that when something is advertised on TV there is an android or apple app - windows is never mentioned. But seeing I have never used windows phone and only been android how true is it?
How have you found it? Anything you found lacking app wise? (banks, social, flipboard..)

        • +11

The apps issue is 3 fold and relates both to the availability and quality of the apps:

          1) Some mainstream apps are still not available from the primary party. Eg Strava - forcing you to make do with 3rd party alternatives or Banking apps, goverment apps where there simply is no alternative.

2)First party apps which are available eg instagram are of poor quality compared with ios/android and are not updated with the same frequency if at all. Eg Instagram has not been updated for over 12 months

          3) This forces you to rely on 3rd party apps which are sometimes not too bad, and at other times disastrous (web page links)

The sorting of the app store is also horrible - often you can't even tell which is the primary app, and the ratings/reviews system is nowhere near as refined as android/ios.

All up its a pretty subpar performance if you're used to ios/android.

Of course if you hardly use any apps/don't mind using web pages then you may be fine.

        • +1

@plasmapuff: totally agree with you. Their phones are absolutley awesome ( 1320, 1520, 930) but the app store sorting, reviews and unrefined apps is a deal breaker. I still cringe for a windows phone after leaving them, but Android is just too good.

        • +2

Coming from a Nexus 4 to Lumia 830, no regrets other then apps….
To sum up the app store, most of your very-very-must-have apps will be there, but usually half@ssed.
ie. missing current features, buggy etc.. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
It feels as if the developers just want an app on the platform due to demand but not willing to support it.

If you're a heavy app user, probably go check out the app store see what it has/doesn't have.

Also yes… some of the things such as navigating around the settings is horrible.. but for the most part u can put everything in notifications centre for quick access

        • +1

@wwwsam: +1. I absolutley love WP! My next phone would be a L830 if it wasn't for the lack of apps. So here comes an Asus Zenphone 2 soon

    • +13

Get the much cheaper 520 for <$50 if you're that desperate for windows phone.

After dabbling with it for 2 months with a 1520 I couldn't stand it and quickly jumped back to android.

If you care at all for first party apps or apps in general you're going to be disappointed.

With a stagnant 3-5% worldwide share, the lack of developers making apps for the platform is perhaps not surprising. Even the ones paid by microsoft are horrendous as they're never updated.

Even Microsoft are moving their eggs out of the WP basket- updating their android/ios office and skype apps way ahead of WP.

YMMV but imo you're not missing anything.

      • +2

I bought the 630 to see what what the OS was like. (HN deal @ $98 with $50 Coles card) I found the UI very clunky and hard to use.

Eg when you go to settings you are hit with a black screen, white writing, all the same font, no icons or pictures. I counted 45 things to choose from. "Display" was number 40 on the list, so if you wanted to change that, you would have to scroll down, looking and at each of the 39 options and having to read each one, (normally with my android I partially look for the colour and icon and partially for the word, and you only have a few selections under each heading) before coming to "display". Similar story for the whole phone to some extent.

For me, home screen could use some words with the icons, I guess once you are used to them, it's easier to choose.

        • +6

How many times per day would you have to go into the "display" option???

I've only been there once on each new WP I've bought…

It's a "set and forget" when you're setting up the phone for the first time (sunlight readability / battery saver brightness / colour profile) - nothing you need to touch on a daily basis unless you're used to Android and continually have to fck about with settings all the time.

Nothing worse than installing an android app in a stock unrooted phone and then finding out it keeps on popping up adverts in the notification and installing a whole host of other unwanted carp in the background… But hey, just install another app to solve your problem which will stop the unwanted apps from magically installing thenselves :)

Yup, if you're looking for a hobby and like frking about with settings then Android is your best choice :)

        • +2

have you tried the notification centre
panel that you can put that there as well as WI-FI blutooth display
          http://www.windowscentral.com/notification-center

        • the 630 is fine and effectively for $50 was an absolute bargain. I would be waiting for the 640XL this should be in this pric point and much better the the 735

        • I like the live tiles, its one aspect on wp that keeps it interesting and unique. MS are working on improving setting menus for wp 10.

        • @pointnlarf: I was thinking the same until I saw the pricing of the 640 ($299) and 640XL ($399). The 735 is going to present great value for a while at this price point until the 640 is discounted.

        • Same really Android is easier to use, Plus the apps update weekly it seems on androids., you go to Msoft apps many not updated for months mainstream ones, that's what lets it down. And i cant live without my Mightytext lol.

      • +5

Same here back to android and enjoying it.

      • +3

Don't know why you were negged for sharing your experience, which some might find useful.

      • +2

I wouldn't call what MS is doing as "moving their eggs out of the WP basket", but rather, they always had Windows and Office as priority.

MS is a software company, I am almost getting the gist that they really don't care about the sales of their hardware.
Frankly speaking, I was expecting what Apple is doing with iOS and MacOS to be done with WP and Windows.
Seamless integration of Windows OS exclusively done with WP… That'd give WP a serious advantage over any other mobile OS out there.
Well, that's one of the main thing I was expecting with WP 8.1 before its release, which unfortunately didn't go as I thought.
I guess they have OneDrive back up, but OneDrive is buggy piece of crap that pretty much don't back up unless you try several times and even then you cannot be certain whether it has backed up properly. Also, it's not exclusive to Windows Phone.
I personally think that's the reason why they are considering moving Cortana to Android and iOS as well.

I personally think that MS don't want to give their phones an edge, but rather, make their Windows platform shine by giving every phones reason to be used with Windows and Office. So rather than moving the eggs out of the WP basket, I personally see their priority to be set for Windows and making their consumers to be loyal to Office and Windows.

    • Try it!

This short review* recommends it to those who want a simple but good experience. It meets all basic requirements very well.

*Disclaimer: I am the writer :) What do you think?

  • +5

Its office works, its not available online and the couple store that I checked are showing "limited - call to confirm".

    Good luck finding stock.

    • +7

Why? Have you used wp8 before?

        • Is Google any better than Microsoft or worse? I'm playing with Android, Windows and BlackBerry phones. Each has their own pros and cons. You are a phone user so you should know what suits you the best!

        • +9

have a look how many apps on your adroid
that are running on the background and you can not stop
that feed minute by minute information back to google

        • +3

          @costas60:

Ehhhh you think MS doesn't do the same in this regard??

You can in theory control this using firewall apps in android if you're rooted. No such option in WP which is locked down.

Privacy does not exist if you use the internet period.

If you're that paranoid, this is the closest thing (ironically runs a modified version of android):
          http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2015/03/blackphone-2-is-probably-t…

        • @plasmapuff:
was replying to comment that if you stay
with Android you keep control of data to yourself and if you go to WP
          you loose control
I totally agree no mater what device you use you have no control
          (smartphone)
unless you go back to a dumb phone

        • +3

I am getting the feeling that you are talking without even trying the OS.
It's not that bad. At least trash talk it after trying it.

I personally found Android to be laggy compared to Windows Phone (That being said, I am using a tablet that still runs on Dalvik, so that might be the reason, hopefully Lollipop can get me some performance increase). I personally found using MTP for connection to be awful as well. Also, my phone runs Windows Phone 8.1, it came with Windows Phone 8, now I can technically get WP 10 TP if I want to.

If you want to talk about rooting and how you can muck around with the OS, I think it's pretty much going into, are you actually using that function or are you using that as an excuse to criticise other OS? Yes, I've heard that custom ROMs are better in terms of performance, but frankly, I wouldn't root my tablet unless I can get around the KNOX counter. Also, I am probably not going to get a custom ROM unless it is safe. Also, not every single Android users root.

Though I frankly think Android/iOS are better OS if you are a heavy smartphone user. App selection is simply better. In other words, for light usage, I think WP is a solid choice. It's relatively cheap compared to Android/iOS phones, it runs fluently on homescreen and any programs that came with the OS. The phone feels very responsive for its price. I don't think I can expect the same from the phones from other OS I could've got at that price.

    • +3

Stop being a douche nozzle, the first word in the title says 'Nokia'. Fine you don't like Windows phone, I don't care about Android, but I don't go in Android phone deals and spout rubbish.

      • +4

You seem to be on WP deal page, probably people open the deal up are interested in Windows Phone.

I personally think WP's a decent alternative for people who don't want to spend fortune to get a phone but still want something that's "smart", has decent hardware (camera mainly) and has a decent user experience.

  • +11

Me too. I've tried andoird and ISO. WP8.1 is so much nicer looking and smoother.

Also don't have to fork out $1000 for a phone that runs it well.

      • +1

"With no apps" lol. Do you seriously think windows phone have no apps? The apps count is lower than iOS and android. But saying "no apps" is ignorance. Most of daily required apps are available on windows phone. And apps count and quality of apps is best in iPhones, not android.

        • +1

The lack of apps and the quality of the ones are certainly an issue, and might be unsuitable for your needs. It best to just get a cheap wp like this.

wp has everything for my needs, with a few exceptions. Hopefully wp 10 rectifies the lack and quality of apps available.

        • -7

There's a difference between "no apps" (which is what I DIDNT type) and "no good apps" (which is what I DID TYPE). Open your eyes and read numbnuts.

        • +4

@Trishool: Nice edit. Still if you think wp have "no good apps" you are wrong.

        • -4

@dadeadman: There was no edit mate, you just can't read and don't have the balls to man up and admit it. Windows Phone…. Aaaaaahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

    • +2

I used to have this phone and I want to give my $0.02. I used to use Android Touchwiz (disliked it), moved to iOS (loved it), then WP8.1 (loved and hated it at the same time) and settled on Android KitKat now (loved it).

Hardware wise, it's incredibly efficient. It is not super fast but so far, handling it, it has no issues with lags and is buttery smooth. You might be annoyed by its flat cut on the bottom and the top, but that's personal preference. Ergonomically, I don't like the flat bottoms and tops, a slight annoyance on my palms. Talking about the screen, it's freaking gorgeous with deep, deep blacks.

Software wise, it has basic apps. And when I say basic, I mean really basic things like emails, WhatsApp, Evernote and Commbank. The apps I frequently use like VSCO, Snapseed and Eyeem are not available. Utility apps I use such as PTV, Google Maps, Gmail, LMS Blackboard are not on WP8.1. When using WP8.1, I really push myself to love it but it gets frustrating when I don't have the apps I normally use. Playmemories is not available and I can't transfer photos from my camera to the phone. The 735 has NFC, but I can't use it with Commbank Tap&Pay or photo transfer that's incredibly frustrating.

So if you are looking for a simple phone to call, text, browse and do basic things from time to time, this is definitely a good choice. Makes a nice premium backup phone as well.

PS: As always, take my opinion with a grain of salt. In regards to OS, I like all three. iOS has a nice, controlled no-customisation ecosystem; Android (in flagship devices) has the same standards of iOS but with a different flavour. Live tiles in WP8.1 are gorgeous and I like the unique feel of the OS, but the lack of apps is concerning - WP8.1 is still in its infancy.

I went to windows phone from Android a year and a half back
will never go back to Android again
the apps I need are available on WP
and with universal apps on WP 10 (when released in a few months)
you can use the same app on WP Tablet and PC
and the operating system runs as smooth on
the very cheapest phone as it does on the most expensive one no lagg

  • +1

The apps selectin is poor, and the ones we have are often worse than the iOS/Android ones… But I found 90% of what I actually used was available and the rest just needed some change in the ways I did thing.

I like the speed, price and battery life of the 735.

    • yes, the app quality still worst than iOS/Android for the same app, it feels like it was 2 version behind those versions, however given Windows 10 upgrade will command millions upon millions of PCs from 2016 and beyond, universal apps will bring the app quality back up as long as developers saw the benefits of those tens of millions of devices and notebooks.

the ecosystem in theory has potential to leave Apple and iOS to dust within a year given they managed to unified all app in the Modern platform of things: Tablets / Notebooks / Phones and Xbox One, Chromebooks are far too little to matter and Mac OSX 10.10 join Apps integration is still very limited to first party stuff

    • +3

App selection doesn't sound that poor if you found 90% of the apps you used.

      • +3

The key there is used… I have a lot more on my old iphone and android that I thought I needed… But turns out really I don't.

The only one I do miss is one that linked to the running machines at the gym… Now I have to manually enter the data… First world problem :)

      • +1

Oh also don't like that messenger and whatsapp can't recompress video, it's like Android 2 years ago. However I now just save and share from one drive when I want to send a video.

        • +3

Doesn't matter what ecosystem, everyone has apps they downloaded that they don't actually use.

        • @sallan75:

Well I have none on my Lumia 735.

        • low market share = developers don't care. You can use Whatsapp Video optimizer to compress the videos. Its not as good as on android but it works. And you can actually control the size of output file so you can use it for apps other than whatsapp too.

        • @dadeadman:

Yes I have used that… But as said its like Android 2 years ago.

  • Don't Microsoft give a 2 year warranty by default now? Or is that only on select models?

    • Pretty certain it's 2 years by default. All my recent devices have come with 2 years.

      • +1

Yes I checked and it is.. I know you can get 2 years on most of these things anyway with your standard rights now but its nice having it on the paperwork right away.

  • That's great price for the phone. I bought it for $300 from harvey norman sometime ago. The battery, display, camera and OS performance is awesome. Only disadvantage would be lack apps. Some due to 512mb ram and most due to no developer support. You will find lot of third party apps that will be better than original apps. This phone can last you for even 5 days with single charge with light usage.

    • I thought it was 1024mb ram?

      • +1

OH! you are correct. I didn't realise that. I never even try to install 1 gb ram apps. Time to install few games on it that I bought on my 1020. Thanks man.

    • I'm wondering the same thing. Hmm.

    • +1

Windows phone app store don't have official Google stuff but gmail no problem, HERE Drive, HERE Map… are very good, Windows Calendar is not bad. I switched to WP from android over a year now, have no complaint

    • No installable apps from google if you go to windows phone- not even YouTube. If you are happy to use browser for all above then yes, it can do it all.

      • or you could use Metrotube.

        • Yes. But it's not YouTube. It does similar job but gives different and less results compared to YouTube search.

        • +2

          @expertreader:

Although I agree the app selection on WP relatively poor. I would much rather use metrotube than the YouTube app on my iPad which is full of ads and takes up my time.

    • +2

Yes. As others have alluded - no native google apps.

You can feed your gmail into the microsoft email app but its not the same and definitely a subpar experience. Especially if you've moved on and used things like Inbox.

HERE maps is ok but doesn't have all the smart features of google maps like bicycle routing.

Try it on a cheap Nokia 520 first if you must - can get them for <$50. I certainly couldn't live it it on a day to day basis and was reverting constantly back to my laptop for things I used to be able to do on an android phone. Kinda defeated the purpose of a smartphone for me. YMMV.

      • +2

Looks like if I went to window I'd miss the android features. I was looking at getting a Lumia 1020 for the camera but don't want to struggle with what I'm currently used to. Looks like I'll go with a note 4,

Saw this online last night and quickly rang up to check stock level at local store and they didn't have any but I got Harvey Norman to price match. So far so good, coming from iOS, so still getting my bearings. The only apps I need/use are facebook, ebay, instagram & ING banking app so this phone is perfect for me, saves me forking out $1000 for another iphone. Amoled display is nice also, I like how they added an extra back cover in the box too.

    • Some have apps but don't make it known, Westpac for instance… It's in 'beta' but you can download and use it.

I just changed to using their website though…
