iPrimus Kahuna Plus 101GB (51GB Peak, 50GB off-Peak) ADSL2+ Broadband Internet for $49.95/Month

57

Found this advertisement in Wednesday's mX (last page) in Melbourne. I guess this offer is in response to TPG's 100GB offer at $49.95 a month (50GB peak and 50GB off-peak).

I'm not sure whether this deal is only available in Melbourne or nationwide.

Oddly, I can't find the offer on their website (maybe I'm not looking in the right place or this is a phone-only offer?), but this offer is definetly better than the other plans they have at the moment.

Call iPrimus on 131 789 or visit iprimus.com.au

Fine print:
- Free setup
- No excess usage charges
- $49.95 per month over 24 months (minimum cost $1198.80)

- 50GB off peak (2am to 10am)
- Speed limited for balance of month after data allowance (either peak or off peak) is reached
- Requires active phone line
- Not available in all areas
- Data allowance inc uploads
- Early exit fee applies
- Direct debit only

  • lol at thre fact its 1gb more than tpg.

I hope tpg bring out 102GB lol

(see below for reasoning behind neg vote)

  • +1

But does TPG charge for uploads? I don't think they do, so the TPG is still a lot better I think.

  • Isn't the offpeak period much bigger here? (compared to TPG)

    • +2

Consists of peak (8am-2am) and off peak (2am-8am) monthly usage quota. Speed will be shaped to 64k/64k for the period in which the monthly usage quota has been exceeded (peak and/or off peak).

2 Hours which will make next to no difference and the fact that its a 24 months (minimum) lock in contract and metered upload makes it a big negative from me..

      • +1 to this

      • +1. Counting uploads towards data and crappy peak/off peak times.

      • upload is counting.

        • ditto

  • TPG didnt use to count uploads ..
Then soon after they introduced the 50/50 plan for 49.95 i thought bout changing .. but read it counted uploads
Now I just looked at their website and it seems that they only count uploads where they mention it .. yet I couldnt find any plan that did. (my guess is they removed it again perhaps)

    Anyways ..

iprimus counts uploads which makes them a negative vote ..

Be nice if some overseas ISP came in . introduced a range of flexible and cheap rates with good service and faster services than current available in Aust .. shake up the big players a bit .. then again thats Rudd's future plan for the internet isnt it? mmm

Lil confused about the hours of Peak/Offpeak as well. According to the rest of their plans, Peak is noon till midnight while Offpeak is midnight till noon. Surprised they are going to change it just for this plan

my 5 cents worth chucks the coin into the kitty :)

    • Dont quote me on this, but i think with TPG voip they do count uploads, however without voip, they don;t. I think it was mentioned previously on a tpg deal

      • +1

        yep thats right
they only count uploads on VOIP plans

  • Sure iPrimus include uploads but you can't judge on that alone. I believe the service offered by iPrimus is superior from what I've read on the Whirlpool forums and less speed related issues.

I'm thinking about updating my internet and I think I'll be choosing iPrimus over TPG as I require a more stable service which I'm not sure I can trust TPG with. Just my 2 cents.

  • I like TPG very much except iptv. I am with TPG since last December still they cannot figure out what's wrong

  • This is receiving a negative from me for the 24 month contract and the counting of uploads and downloads. Counting uploads makes a huge difference to quota, you could almost split your quota in half if you use bittorrent.

It would go something like this

    Actual Quota: 50+50GB
    Quota if using bittorrent: 25+25GB
    Quota for regular user: 40+40GB

This might not be true for everyone, but it clearly shows that counting uploads reduces value significantly.

What most people don't understand is that in a normal 24 month contract there is ALWAYS a better deal within that time. However since you are in a contract you are stuck with the bad value deal.

TPG offer 12 and 18 month contracts.

Since I went with TPG they upgraded the plan from 25+25GB, 30+30GB, 40+40GB and now 50+50GB.

iPrimus is not this competitive meaning there is a good chance you will regret going with them.

If iPrimus offered a 12 month contract then ignoring the poor quota value as it counts uploads and downloads you could go on this plan without regretting it.

    Because they don't I wouldn't bother.

Don't be like 80% of the staff at my work that want a better deal but have to wait for their 24 month contract to finish.

    • TPG: 12 or 18 month contract with "up to $350" contract cancellation fee [1].
iPrimus: 24 month contract with "up to $350" contract cancellation fee [2].

Both absurdly long contracts with excessive contract cancellation fees. The thing is neither of them explain how the termination fee is calculated, and iprimus in particular doesn't even quote the $350 MAX (hence the whirlpool forum). Both suck as far as I am concerned.

Nobody should enter a contract that they might have to break, thats why its a contract.

The fact is that a 24 month contract is too long, and a 12 month contract is pretty fair considering the alternatives.

        • +1

Remember, in 24 months some parts of Australia will already have access to the National Broadband Network.

        18 month TPG is OK.
After the contract is finished, you can upgrade/downgrade your contract for free every 6 months without having to restart your contract :)

        • Wow, a free plan change every 6 months LOL

        • Thats not exactly right.

If you are on TPG in or out of contract you can sidegrade or upgrade as many times you like for free.

You do get charged for downgrading plans while in a contract, but thats fair enough.

    • Not everyone can join TPG!

      • Your right, but at least in my experience in Brisbane, if you can't get TPG then you are probably stuck getting Telstra/Bigpond.

        • Not true.

If you can get Bigpond then you can get any other reseller of ADSL1 services.

There have been reported instances where applying to another provider gets you a decline but applying to Bigpond gets you an accept. See the broadband discussion site Whirlpool for examples of this.

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: What I meant is that there is a high percentage of people that get told by Bigpond that they are the only company in their area that can give them broadband.

Its hard to know the exact situation of each person but there are plenty of situations where you can only get Bigpond even if you should technically be able to get one of their resellers.

And either way, telstra resellers aren't good value and certainly aren't a bargain :)

@samfisher5986: No. You are very wrong, again.

If you can get Bigpond you 100% can get resellers.

There are many value offerings out there and, in my honest opinion, almost always better value than Telstra.

              If in doubt, see www.whirlpool.net.au

@YesPleaseThankYou: I think you'll find that you are wrong.

There are people that were rejected for ADSL from Telstra resellers but they are accepted by Bigpond.

Not only that but Bigpond will often tell you that they are the only company that can supply them ADSL Broadband so its either Bigpond or nothing.

While there are people who have no trouble using any ISP on a telstra exchange, there are people that can't. Its not right, but thats just how it is unfortunately.

  • I can't get TPG as my phone is with Optus, Telstra only I was told (by TPG). Is iPrimus any different?

    • I'm not sure if Optus is still doing their home phones the same way … but I know previously, Optus did the home phones on the same cable as the pay tv service was.

This means that its not going through a normal copper line which would be why Telstra/other isps said they cant do it.

iPrimus would be exactly the same as well.

Even Telstra would more than likely tell you they cant supply you with a service
