  • My old laptop with a middling Core 2 Duo and 2GB RAM can still run 20 Chrome tabs with Word docs, OneNote and PDFs at the same time.

You're doing well. I had an ASUS F202(X202) with 2GB RAM and it got cranky no where near that.

      • I've found putting Xubuntu or Linux Mint XFCE makes it nearly like new.

        • +1

I could imagine that helping a lot.

I gave it to my daughter though so windows is the only option there. Ultimately the screen was too small for my tired eyes (11.?") - assuming we're both taking about the Asus f202.

  • Does anyone know if I can still claim the cashback if I used JB gift cards in my purchase? Im a newbie with cashbacks.

    • Should be able to no problems probie

  • So would the general consensus be that this deal would be preferable to the Kogan $369 option? How about a refurbed Inspiron 15" from the Dell DFO for $279? The Dell has the slower processor but a little more ram.

Either way I need a pair of laptops for my primary school kids to use during their studies. They will be sitting on the desk only and not taken to school, so not worried about weight, and a bigger screen is preferable (there is no room for desktops). I would evaluate getting more ram (probably 4gig) if needed, but will leave out the SSD. No need for blazing fast speeds…

    • The China/Kogan laptop would be hard to find parts and servicing for

      • +1

Thanks for that. I just picked up two from Chatswood Westfield, and am staring at the boxes now. Hopefully they are a decent unit (they had none on display). Next step is to set them both up… Gowd I hate computers ;)

  • Will it void warranty opening bottom to replace hdd and ram

I did not see any sticker in the way of removing screws. So I don't think If I opened and messed around and returned to shop they would know if it has actually been touched.

    Hey all,

I bought this laptop today and having difficulties on finding a 4GB Ram that is compatible with this laptop,
I tried 3 different type and brand including 4GB Kingston PC3-12800, 4GB Patriot PC3-10600 and another 4GB Hynix PC3-12800, all of them are not compatible, all I'm getting is a black screen when I switch it on,

The RAM that comes standard with the laptop is a 2GB Kingston PC3-12800, I would think another Kingston would work but NO :(

Would be great if anyone can let me know the brand, speed etc if you manage to get it working,
    Thanks guys !!!

EDIT: Kingston SSD works like a charm, only the RAM that's an issue.

    • Someone in the dse deal successfully put 8gb in theirs (I think it was this jb version) best asking them, thanks for pointing this out. On phone right now or I would have found the user name for you.

Are you using 1.35v low voltage RAM? As mentioned below it most likely won't take the regular 1.5v stuff.

  • +2

    I guess you need DDR3L 1.35v RAM?

    • +2

This ^ DDR3 won't work, your RAM needs to be DDR3L

      • Oh yeah, DDR3L (low voltage) is needed.

This doesn't say DDR3L but it does say it's low voltage (1.35V) so it should be fine right?

        • @mattoo: \
How did you guys find out you need 1.35v ram? I emailed acer and they told me either 1.35 or 1.5v ddr3 would work but I put in an 8gb 1.5v stick and it wouldn't boot.. just a black screen..
Any sources to verify only 1.35v ram will work?
          Thanks

        • @cb1:

I recall someone saying their ram didn't work and then it turned out to 1.5V.

1.35V will definitely work - it did for mine as well as everyone else

        • @cb1:

I put in an 8gb 1.5v stick and it wouldn't boot.. just a black screen..

obviously that would mean it only supports 1.35V……………….

        • @CVonV:
No shit, but if acer is saying it should work and refusing to provide support then I obviously need evidence to take action against them for providing me incorrect information..

        • @cb1:

they obviously don't know what they're talking about.. what's the issue anyway? why do you have a grudge against them for being clueless? just use the DDR3L and move on

        • @CVonV:
Because i've now wasted money on ram that I can't use and obviously can't return to MSY as it's not faulty. Additionally, I spent more money on ddr3l ram because I wrongly assumed that if I bought higher-end ram, it would more likely be compatible.. if I had've known that likely any ddr3l ram would work, then I would've bought the cheapest 1333 ddr3l I could find. What's the point in getting a good deal on a laptop if I waste money on ram that I wouldn't have otherwise had to waste?

        • @cb1:

didn't you read the many comments on here that it required low voltage ram though?

        • @CVonV:
No, I assumed the manafacturer would be able to accurately tell me what ram is compatible. they did make the laptop after all…

        • @cb1:

lol.. man.. that's gonna be a hassle.. if you swap it @ msy they'll charge you a restocking fee :/

  • Is it just a matter of buying any SATA3 SSD (Ie Kingston V300 128GB from MSY) and an 8GB Stick of Ram (Kingston DDR3L from MSY), then copying the contents of the old drive to the new SSD wuth my desktop PC, then swapping both parts and off you go? Any mounting hardware needed for the SSD? Doesn't have to be mSATA?
    Thanks :)

    • +1

Alternatively, you could have both the HDD and SSD in the laptop, so long as you don't mind missing out on a DVD drive.

      • Thanks. Would you know where to get a DVD drive caddy? Any cables / adaptors required for this kind of install?

Just copy the drive contents across and change the boot drive I assume?

        • +1

To your original question, while technically a clone from HDD to SSD should work fine, that isn't always the case. And laptops tend to have bloatware on them anyway making a clean install a good option.

2 Drives is cool, though you're still in the same predicament because you'll want that SSD for your boot drive.

        • I ordered this last night. Hopefully arrives tomorrow. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/301615777153?_trksid=p2060353.m27…

Cheaper than a caddy, I'm just gonna tape the HDD to hold it down. The case when screwed back on should support the drive as well.
          I bought the Kingston 4gb 1600 1.35V ram ($45) and a Patriot Blaze 120gb SSD ($71).

Will report back and let you know how it goes.

        • @Kuro: Keep us posted! Be interested to know how you intend to keep the blanking panel for the DVD drive attached?

        • +1

I installed the 120gb SSD and 4GB ram last night, it flies! Booted in 6 seconds. Shut down in 4 seconds.

Still a fresh install so no software installed. Would be a bit slower once more software is installed.

Still waiting for the adapter to install the original HDD into the DVD bay.

        • @Kuro: Looking at the adaptor and the back of the machine, I'm not sure it will fit (ie line up properly…)

        • @glovebox:

          It doesn't :(

Ordered the caddy on Ebay. Seller in NT, $10.56 from memory. Ordered the 9.5mm one

      • +2

I was considering this but I heard that having 2 drives will reduce battery life as the battery will have to power both drives. I'm not sure if the difference in battery life will be significant though, but it's still a concern and so I might just stick to an SSD.

  • +1

Just got one myself. Its certainly not bad for like kids or something but its begging for an SSD and some more RAM.

  • Hey can someone link me an 8gb DDR3L RAM that works with this laptop or know of places to buy these? Thanks :)

    • 8GB Kingston 1.35V, $79 at MSY

    $253.30 now before discounts

    • Yeah I saw that this morning. I let my sister know, who was equivocating on getting one.

    • Damn! I thought my $290 with HN price beat was a good deal!

  • I bought one for my mum and installed an SSD and upgraded the RAM.

I've installed windows 8.1 on the machine but im having issues with the trackpad. I've installed drivers but the cursor was not even showing on the screen let alone responding to movements or mouse clicks. I saw an option in the bios to switch it to a setting called 'basic' instead of 'advanced' and it seems to be working now. Did some googleing and I even made a UEFI usb boot drive to install windows from, but that didn't help.

Anyone able to get advanced touchpad features to work on a fresh install?

ATM under the basic setting, it does work, but it doesn't support any advanced features such as two-finger scroll

    • +2

The windows driver update for the intel serial IO is broken. You need to download and install the one from acer, and disable updates for that driver.

      http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers
      This one:
IO Drivers Intel Serial IO Driver 603.9600.1948.28229 1.7 MB 2014/10/27

It stumped me for a while. I ended up disabling driver updates for win 8.1 due to it.

I actually have never had that much trouble installing an OS since windows 98, all due to this faulty driver Microsoft have for the chip. Usually nowdays, you can just install the OS and everything works, and you don't even have to bother installing any manufacturers drivers at all.

      • +1

Also, regarding installing from USB, there is a heck of a lot of mucking about to do that. If you are on a blank disk you probably just need to get it done in the BIOS. But if you are trying to enable it from windows (for a fresh install), a lot more work:
        itsfoss.com/disable-secure-boot-in-acer/

If you can get to the bios, you need to set a Supervisor password, then go to the boot table and disable secure boot.

NOTE: Just to be clear, on my above post, the Intel Serial IO driver being broken stops the touchpad driver from working.

        Legend, this fixed.

        Thanks for that.

With 8gb RAM and the SSD this thing is very fast. I thought the CPU would make some noticeable issues, but really, the biggest complaint of mine is that it does not have wireless AC

        • No worries.

Yeah it isn't like AC is that new either…

It didn't seem to implement N 5GHz either. Not a big problem as I've never had much luck with 5GHz.

The OEM OS is so horrifically bloated too. So much rubbish installed.

A nice light unit though. Worth the money.

      • +1

        woohoo!!!

Thanx, that fixed my dead touchpad

Was just about to take it back too

        • Glad to help.

I wonder who the fault lies though, that Microsoft have a corrupt driver?

  • Received notebook in the post and the (SNID) has been blacked out, some muppet at JBHIFI did it. Anyone else had this problem?
    http://tinyurl.com/lldhj4f

    • Wow that is 100% criminal. That is just theft. Definitely contact them

    • Outrageously poor form. Nothing in the sale terms and conditions (Acer or JB) that not eligible for rebate?

      Otherwise..theft by someone.

    • I'd complain to the Manager of JB Hifi. Take the Acer Cashback form with you. Print it out so they know the laptop is eligible for cashback and SNID is required. Ask them to give you a new laptop/box with a clear SNID or refund you the difference. They have no reason to black out the SNID.

    • Same issue ….purchased mine from JB HiFi(Strands, Sydney CBD). Bar Codes blacked out, SNID visible. Should I be worried about the cash back claim etc..?:(

      • I would be worried. Maybe phone acer and ask. Can you at least read it through the black out? So you can fill in the form which you need to add the SNID?

You have to actually physically cut out and post in that SNID barcode they have defaced.

    • Not cool. Although you can take a photo with a strong flash and you should be able to work out what's underneath.

    • +2

Had similar issue but the SNID on the box was still visible with the right angle and lighting. I was also able to confirm SNID by comparing with a similar sticker underneath the laptop itself. I took photos of both and got in touch with the Acer cashback team through helpdesk.acer.com.au. They were pretty quick to respond and believe JB Hifi do this as part of their stocktake. No malicious intent on anyone's part. I was reassured that my cashback would be fine but I had to send my docs attentioned to the particular cashback staff who responded.
