$31 Telstra & Vodafone Starter Kits (3 X $30) @ Coles

450

Coles are selling Vodafone $30 starter kit for half price, coupled with this great bargain an easy 3 starter kits to alternate between them.

2x$15 Vodafone starter kits = $30, then once you hit the $30 mark you qualify for the $1 Telstra starter kit.

3 starter kits with $90 credit for $31 is a sweet deal in my books ;)

The deal works, I even scanned my Flybuys at 2 different Coles.

    • Nifty valu — 2x Voda kit - supported by 30 dollars' value Google Play - care of Telstra.
Be sure to enqueu your Play Store - Wish List though, before activation of Data Pass /elstra Freedom offers and so forth, to get maximal benefit.
Be alert+ to the Tel-co have restricted caller identification from being passed thru Skype, now that most carrier fwd number Skype Out.<>

Pretty reasonable deal overall. Considered you get self-renewing flow at the every weekend. - As opposed to 1.3GB-use it once Tel; & elsewhere, O witha cartel 1.2GB only worse it expires 30x monthly on $/d.

  • The same process did not work for me for Skype cards which were 40% off. Have you tried it?
If it works it is a very good bargain.

    • The same process did not work for me for Skype cards which were 40% off

Did they enter the Skype card purchase first and then the Telstra pack?

If you look at the original offer linked - the deal excludes "Coles Group gift cards".
Skype cards are not "Coles Group" gift cards and so if it doesn't work you can point them to the T&C's for a manager override.

      • Yes, we tried 2 $25 Skype cards + 2 chocolates to make it above $30 and then scanned Telstra starter kit. The price was $60+.
Then I bought groceries worth $35 and scanned the card. It worked fine.

  • Can someone confirm whether this actually works?

  • It can't work. Communication products are excluded from this offer

  • starter kits includes new simcard right? can I top up my existing number?

If doesn't work, why not neg the deal? I will revote if people can prove it does work.

      • Pointless.

    • +4

Tested and it works ;) with Flybuys as well

      • Thanks, I will try my luck at my local Coles.

  • May not work - will be refused at my Coles

$1 SIM deal does not specifically exclude purchase of these Starter Packs, but it does exclude Telstra $30 Starter Pack as the $30 purchase. Coles or their staff may widen that definition.

Since the $1 SIM deal is promoted & paid for by Telstra not Coles - to attract new customers, I doubt Telstra will want to support Vodaphone attracting customers away this way!

So expect refusal, but worth a try & report back.

OP: always best to test a deal works before posting.

    • +1

Agreed but I guess if OP can't test it, this is the next best way as it raises awareness and could prompt other members to try and report back with results.

      • It's similar to the posting guideline on available quantity - which is check before posting. The available level on this deal is 0, until confirmation of success.
Now confirmed at 1 Coles :-)

    • +2

Tested and it works ;) with Flybuys as well at 2 different Coles shops.

      • +1

It's just tricky when combining 2 separate deals into 1, as either stock may not be available at a store, or not be accepted combined at individual stores - the case at mine.

There was no question of FlyBuys working, or using other Coles vouchers (double Flybuys points) etc.

    • +1

Coles or their staff may widen that definition.

Legally they can't because it's contrary to their T&C's.

I doubt Telstra will want to support Vodaphone attracting customers away this way!

Haha. Good point. They should have put that in the T&C's then.

      So expect refusal

They can expect a fight then.

      :)

You've seen the official Telstra promotion t&c?
Post a copy on OzBargain, I'd love to read it.

Fisticuffs at Coles - I'll sell the popcorn ;-)
I'm betting on the tag team of Telstra & Coles, against the masked avenger of customer rights, Frig.

Stores can limit sales of any item. They often do that in sales of mobile devices & SIM cards. That's what I meant by change the definition of the deal :-)

[I've fought & won a consumer case over refusal to supply. Set a precedent (not in the courts, but people taking similar cases can use it to see how to mount the case & probable payout figure). My argument was so hard for them to defend, they settled out if court to avoid costs & bad publicity. My only concession was a confidentiality clause. Given the payout & the changes to their company, staff training, etc it was worth never revealing the exact details. (Cost them a fortune.)]

On repeat in my car ;-)

        • Telstra's T&C have nothing to do with it.
It's Coles that's selling the product to the customer, not Telstra.
The deal/contract is between the customer and Coles.
Telstra can only but in when you go to activate the SIM… or in their dealings directly with Coles.

        • @Phoebus:
The promotion is run by Telstra or its promoter, sold through Coles. So Telstra's promotion t&c apply, not Coles.

Coles are merely the reseller. That's why staff knew nothing of it at the start & promo didn't appear in catalog last week.

Has anyone seen the full official t&c? The extract in newspaper ads is not them. Normally the link appears in ads. They're run past get lawyers & contain many incomprehensible clauses. Googled but did not find the elusive t&c.

I'm also saying Coles as a retailer can legally limit all sales. I have some experience in this area as I stated.

Seems Frig's :) at the end indicated this was not so serious a legal issue :)
We've been discussing a few things.

I think you're taking my mainly tongue in cheek remarks far too seriously.

Only the remarks repeated & expanded above & my experience (paras 3&4 in original) was said with a serious face.

Anything finishing with music lyrics is usually not that serious ;-)
And no, that song is not on repeat in the car.

        • @Phoebus:
"The deal/contract is between the customer and Coles."

I think you are confused there. While the contract of sale of the SIM is between the customer and Coles as reseller, it is the promotion t&c which govern IF the sale can be made in the first place.

Those t&c are outside Coles control. Of course their interpretation is up to the staff member on the day.

"Telstra can only but in when you go to activate the SIM… or in their dealings directly with Coles."
Again… the use of the Telstra SIM is governed by Telstra's t&c, along with other bodies. Those are very different t&c to this promotion & are completely separate.

As for Telstra's "dealings directly with Coles", that's where the promotion t&c govern Coles.

All this is little different to finding a discount voucher for a manufacturer's product redeemable at a certain store. Those co-promotions show up on OzBargain. The t&c are from the distributer or promoter, not the store. Arguing with the store is futile.

I just wanted to ensure that It didn't come across as getting angry or anything as looking at the text it can be construed that way.

Has anyone seen the full official t&c? The extract in newspaper ads is not them. Normally the link appears in ads.

The fact there is an absence of any * indicated further conditions would surely work in the customers' favour though if there was any doubt. I'm sure someones' backside will get kicked for this omission if there is in fact an omission.

I can see how general store policy would come into effect in the case of limiting quantities and that is usually clear in the store's T&C's.

          What, like mine ;-)
Some people can get upset by the nuance in what is written, and truly miss the substance.

I'm sure someones' backside will get kicked for this omission if there is in fact an omission.

          It's time for a paddling!

Coles is surely going to get up the promoter for the many stuff ups & lack of clear t&c.

The almost same Woolies $1 Telstra deal was the same stuff up - staff did not know, made up their own restrictions, refused valid deals, & let me buy $1 $30 packs without any purchase (I outlined the method).

I tried buying a $30 Optus recharge and then adding the Telstra pack and lo and behold it worked!!!

Yes, Optus & Telstra can work together in the same deal. Black holes are not created, the world does not come to an end ;-)

Unless you shop in my area, yes it works.

The next store south of my Coles has the same restriction I outlined. But bizarrely the next store north issued a raincheck for the $1 Telstra deal!
Like an official in an old time lottery, I witnessed the raincheck being redeemed.

          Nice choice of song.

I'm waiting for the audio version of OzBargain. Text is so dated.

        • @Frig:
          No, I'm 'New Bruce'.
But you can still get 'Classic Bruce' for those special occasions.

Focus groups found I needed a new edge, with some humour, but still stirred things up.

So I've brought back some of my old ways from writing & lecturing at uni.

But like New Coke, the marketing guys don't think it will last long.

Enjoy / ignore / dislike it while it lasts.
Just don't take it too seriously :-)

        • @brucefromaustralia:

I prefer the Bruce who says:

"I once got run over by a Toyota… Oh what a feeling."

          :eyeroll:

        • @Frig:
Hey, they used the same focus group to create that Bruce :-)

  • Usual warnings
^Some stores may have no stock of Telstra or Vodafone packs
Always check for long expiry date on Telstra packs (mainly 2017). Coles have been selling out their old stock in the $1 deal. Vodafone packs have no expiry date.

This deal should work, I bought the $14 Vodafone USB kits similar to these last weekend and it worked

    • Clarky, this deal wasn't available last weekend ;-)
How dare you edit while I'm answering - you know I'm fast :-(

My Coles has now tightened the rules on deals like this & say they will refuse with starter packs & recharges. That was after so many were sold, so the advice is get in quick.

Other devices like you bought were always ok, if overpriced against the previous $9 deals.

      • Lol, yes sorry I forgot to put in the USB bit in! Great pick up!

        • Some great person did call me 'the answering machine' ;-)

  • +3

At Coles now, it works !!

  • Probably will work, but I checked 2 Coles at Sunnybank and Sunnybank Hills last weekend. Both has no stock of the Telstra sim, and they said they don't know when the next lot will come in. Good idea, but only if your local Coles has stock of the Telstra sim.

    • +1

You didn't read my restock advice for Brisbane late Tuesday?? Checked at 2 Southside stores, but check local stocks^.

Lol, all I got for posting new stock had come in was a neg :-)

      • +1

        I balanced out your neg

        • Now, how do I do a kissie emoji ;-)

And I wonder why people neg me :-)

      • +1

I gave you an upvote. No, I didn't read your restock advice, thanks for the heads up. Cheers.

        • +1

It's OzBargain - too many comments, too little time, let me at the deal.

        • @brucefromaustralia: Lol. True dat.

Does not work cause all Coles are out of Telstra $30 SIM cards been trying almost every store past week calling them and going there utterly disappointed.

    • +3

Does not work vs. shortage of stock, are two different things mate.

    • +3

all Coles are out of Telstra $30 SIM cards

      REALLY?
Must take my medication - I'm sure the SIMs I bought at Coles Tuesday night exist, but if you say so…

Posted above about restock at some stores & warned to check stock was available. Others report stock & deal works today.

      Isn't that enough?
      Someone needs a hug :-)

    • Had no problem getting one yesterday at my local Coles.

      • And you and DEvok are both from Sydney, by your profile ;-) (I know it's a big city.)

        • I decided to go to my neighbourhood Coles on the assumption that there would be less contention there than in a Coles in a large shopping centre.

  • +1

In stock and working at Coles Kings Cross, 1:20pm

Edgecliff has telstra Sims, but no vf - waiting for stock in next few days

  • OK. I'm going to Coles again tonight.. Voda SIMs will enable me to port my number out and back in to Telstra. Will use the Vodafone SIM for the full month of course.
Would be nice if Optus or Vodafone had a $1 deal.

    • Pity you missed the free $10 Optus pack at Coles Express about a month back. Had recommended it for that porting task & unlimited calls + 500MB for 5 days. Picked up so many of those.

Some minor telcos send out free SIMs. I used to use Yatango free for porting + 1GB - no longer available.

    • +1

Seems an expensive way to port, when you can port out from Telstra & port back with a free SIM. (Took 2 calls & total of 3 hours to port both ways on Christmas Eve. I do that twice a year.)

It just means buying a few more $1 Telstra Starter Packs & finding a supply of free SIMs. (People give me unused $2 sims - ideal for this purpose, free)

Quite a saving over a $15 SIM - yes there are advantages with Vodafone, but you're paying $14 extra. I'd rather spend that on food & still get the $1 SIM deal.

So costs $1/month if using Freedom Plan.

Or $1/6month on LongLife-Simplicity Plan (includes 200 minutes of calls). Plus you transfer your Telsta credit to that SIM & use for more calls.

So my main phone number has remained the same for years, and now costs only $2/year ;-)

Have written about this many times & use it myself. From the messages I get from many OzBargainers, they think it's great. I've been writing about Telstra on OzBargain for quite a while.
      But it gets negged?

      • haters gonna hate.
        So where's the free SIMs?
vf SIMs aren't a compete waste. I will actually use it for a month.
Never used vf before so I hope the coverage is at least comparable to Optus.
My plan is to data plans and use VoIP and just keep my number for incoming SMS and calls.
Hopefully Optus follows Telstra's lead and has some $1 SIM promotions.

  • +1

Thanks OP, got the last telstra one at local store. Got me worried when I saw $60 pop up on the screen, it took a good second for the discount to be applied.

  • Went to Coles at Garden City QLD & the girl said they only sell 1 per customer, so how does this work then?

    • +1

      Same story at Carindale.
They're ganging up against us ;-)

But it may depend on the staff member.

      • Assuming I can buy 2 for $15 each, should I just ask for another pack & pay altogether? Would they come to $31 still?

      • Updated: Coles at Myer Centre do not have these SIM packages at 1/2 price, they said this only applies to suburban Coles :(

        • +1

That's with all Coles Central stores - different signage. Same with other mobile & catalog deals - usually not available.

Coles Central is a convenient, express supermarket in the heart of the city.

To your previous question - should work, that's the deal if buy 2 Vodafone then Telstra in same purchase.

        • @brucefromaustralia: Thanks Bruce! How about "buy 2 Vodafone then another Vodafone in same purchase", should it still possibly be $31? Just wanna make sure :)

        • @tmduc1987:
Pushing the deal envelope there - but no :-(

This deal totally relies on the spend $30, add 1 $30 Telstra Starter Pack for $1 deal.

This deal is just a suggestion to spend your $30 on 2 $15 Vodafone Starter Packs listed in this week's catalog.

You can spend $30 on almost anything, except a few exclusions listed in the real deal.

    • Indeed.. They were all out of the Vodafone $30 packs when I went there an hour ago.. But they had the Telstra packs. My freezer is already full of salmon.

      • +1

My freezer is full of the remainder of the 2kg smoked salmon Woolies gave me free, along with tuna, lemon pepper salmon, 'Barra', … bought with so many $10 off $30 Woolies offers, making frozen salmon about $13/kg … too much fish.

Have had to buy packet food at Coles, like the 1/2 price Jordans cereal today.
