Saw this at my local Kmart store, pretty cheap imo. EDIT sorry, this was in Sunnybank Hills Kmart, 5+ stock when I was there.

Locked to Optus, if you activated the sim for less than 6 months, $80 unlocking fee applies. After 6 months its $25, however ebay unlocking options are available too.

UPDATE: I was able to unlock my Lumia 530, I had a active $2 Optus SIM number(active for over 6 months) lying around so I emailed them and they gave me an unlocking code within 2 days. If you have any friends/family member that has a prepaid Optus SIM active for over 6 months, use their number and email them, I'm sure it'll work too.

      Yes I can say from personal experience it works fine using an amaysim sim on an optus locked phone. Have one for my wife and she just killed the current optus phone. This would be a cheap solution.

        I updated mine and it doesn't seem to have an issue, although I've only used the GPS a couple of times.

      quite a serviceable GPS for the car.

      How good is the display? Cheap phones tend to make a poor GPS, as can be hard to see by day if any sunlight or reflections hit screen.

        There is no problem using it for car navigation inside a car, screen is fine.
        If one wants to use it for outdoor activities it would be a different story.

        Well my E71 maps were far better than the Always Lost supplied by Hertz in US of A. I am sure this is much better than an E71 screen.

    You don't even need to activate the Optus SIM before you unlock, and from what I can see, there doesn't appear to be any Optus branding on the phone - unlike similarly Telstra locked phones.

          Yeah not sure this is still working. Optus appear to have stopped the free unlock of this phone from around 28 or 29 May 2015. It was working when I posted that deal, but I think Optus killed it :(

          I also get the same message a fem min. before. Apparently, they have got into it.

          I can confirm that It is locked to Optus. Free unlocking does not works for me at the moment.Unlock code seems to be available for $19 as commented below.

          I had the same problem that others are having. I received the "This mobile device is not a locked Optus prepaid mobile device" error message. So I used the Optus Customer Chat Room and spoke (typed actually) with the rep. who quickly produced the unlock code without any fee. The code worked and now I can use a Telstra SIM as well in my phone.

          Cant you just ring Optus and say you are travelling overseas and they unlock the phone free of charge? I've never had issues in the past doing this, has it changed recently?

Mine just wanted to know the model number and the IMEI and she just stopped talking for a minute then when she came back she said this is your code. I copied it to notepad and then when I put in a Telstra SIM and it prompted for the unlock code, I entered it (it's about 16 digits) and it said unlock successful and the SIM worked.

          They must have the ability to do it right from their keyboard. I mentioned the URL for the unlock page on the Optus site: https://secure-unlock.com.au/ou/launch

          @rilebags: The lady asked what I needed help with and I said that I was trying to using https://secure-unlock.com.au/ou/launch to unlock my phone but that I kept getting the error message that my phone was not locked to the Optus network. I had to provide my name, address and d.o.b. which I had on their system from when I registered the SIM earlier that day. Then I provided the IMEI and model number. She asked me to wait and then after 2 or 3 minutes she game me a number (about 16 digits) which is my unlock code. I put a Telstra SIM in my phone and it prompted me to enter the unlock code, which I did and it said "unlock successful" and now the phone works with Telstra.

          I'm not sure why rodinthink had an issue, maybe some staff are a bit unsure and maybe you might have to try using the Optus support chat thing a few times before you get the right person.

        Yep, just did.
        Activated and claimed my Netflix then after that just did the unlock successfully!

        However my $14.50 ZTE phones won't unlock :'(

      I was able to unlock 2 last night.
      it wouldn't let me unlock the second one due to maximum allowed usage come back tomorrow, but hotspot shield fixed that up :)

          Yeah better phone all round

          Better screen
          Faster SoC (s400 vs s200)
          1gb of ram
          4g plus has band 28 (I get 50 mb/s on Optus)
          The camera has a flash (so can be used as torch as well)
          Double tap to wake
          Capacitive buttons light up

          The only down side is 2gb of storage for apps, but sd card solves that issue.

          I'd rate it slightly better than the 532 and slightly below the Y550.

          Certainly a better deal than the 530 if needing to unlock

        I wanted the cheapest android phone I could find, just so I could stick a Telstra SIM into it to access the google play credits on my telstra sim account. Found that BP are now selling the Boost Nero(locked to Boost/Telstra network) for $29, plus a "speakerbox" thrown in as a bonus. The phone usually retails from Boost for $49. So if you're after a cheap Android phone, maybe could look at that. Comes with $10 credit

          I don't even think the boot loader has been unlocked so there would be no way to run the custom ROM regardless.

      I think windows memory management performs better on phones with low memory, like this one, than android does.

      Windows tends to dump apps out of memory when switching, whereas android seem to keep much of it. Slightly frustrating to have to reload webpages and lose half written messages but it sure does all the phone business very snappily.

        Yeah, I think Windows do limit a lot of multitasking and manages memory more vigourously. I remember how the live tiles updated once every 30 minutes on WP8 (now it goes once every minute, I believe).

      Terrific. I had a Nexus 5 which would be running low by the end of the day even with moderate use. This will last into the next day with the same sort of use (albeit barely).

          @Steptoe: Funny enough you'd think it was but for what I use it for it for (twitter, light browsing, reddit, Ozbargain, Myfitnesspal) I don't notice a lot of difference. The apps I don't have on the 530 I put on my Android tablet and connect up through the 530's internet sharing.

      Can only comment on playing music at near full volume thru headphones. Just under 20 hours screen mostly off, with one reboot.
      Volume is a little higher than most other phones I have which is great.

    I have one of these, which I bought as a temporary replacement for my Nexus 5. Once I adjusted to the different look and feel and found substitute apps for my old Android apps I discovered it was terrific. Good battery life, screen looks pretty readable even outside, sound is pretty good. Not as responsive as the Nexus 5 was but hey, it was $49. Screen also seems pretty durable from breaks/scratches. I'm genuinely surprised how good this phone is for the money I paid.

    One downside is the camera - it'd be generous to say it was OK. But the camera app is pretty cool.
