    A quote from the link:

"It performs at a write speed of up to 13 Mb/s and a read speed of up to 21 Mb/s."

It is the slowest USB3 HDD ever seen.

    • +3

That can be right. I checked and mine is the 1tb version and I just transfered some music clips (about 1.2gb) to it and it wrote at 75MB/s at first then dropped to around 68MB/s. Reading was so fast I only saw 3 numbers before it was done, started at about 700MB/s, then 350, then 240 then complete. It took about 2 seconds for the whole 1.2GB.

I would say office works screwed up and put a thumb drive spec on there (saying officeworks make a mistake - wash my mouth out!)

      • +1

Depends on what it is.. if they are 4kb files, then I can see it dropping to under 20MB/Sec.

        • Seriously dude. You only transfer 4kb files onto a 1 TB drive! I mean of course it would slow down if it you transferred only 4kb files sizes. But that would happen with any drive. So it is kind of a pointless statement as a reflection on this model. I'm pretty sure a ferrari goes slower if pull the hand brake on or tow a tank, that does not mean it's stated top speed is no longer 350 km/h.

Well as I said above, my test was music clips so videos, 50MB to 150MB in size, 1.12GB in total. I figured that was a nice average size. Not tiny 4kb files and not a 7GB file. Seemed a nice average size. But still it was WAY the heck more than what officeworks quotes. I could not be bothered making a folder of a GB of 4KB files just to check it out.

        • @ShipShapeRC:
That was the worst case example and it can happen for certain situations that pump out smaller log files (if you wish to back these up). Just saying that the Officeworks figure is probably the worst case situation, as opposed to moving big gigs of media files around (which will be around 70MB/sec as you say).

        • +2

@bchliu: Ah yes, I think with 4kb files it would be much slower, but they do say "speed of up to" so they are talking about best case, not worst. I don't think I have ever seen anyone advertise their worst case specification. And if it is a Chinese battery manufacturer 'up to' means what ever figure they want to print on the side. All I'm saying is that officeworks have screwed up their advertised specification so don't let that put you off a ripper little drive.

    • A quick google search of both the 1TB and 2TB models will reveal specs of "Transfer Rate: Up to 480 Mb/s"

Another site also says "Maximum Data Transfer Rate 5.0 Gb/s"

      • +1

Meaningless specs really. It should be 5.0Gbps, which is the bandwidth of USB3.
Of course, means nothing as that's not the limiting factor here…
I'd say the peak read speed would be around the 100MB/s mark like most others. (using USB3 on Win8 as an example anyway)

  • Thanks OP! Bought one :)

    Very nice find. Thanks unity.

    2 cheap 1TB's in 2 days o.O

  • +1

I have the 2tb version on a laptop as my torrent drive, had it a year, possibly more and it runs 24/7 - never an issue.

    • so I can take out this from the casing and put in on my laptop?

      • +2

possibly but I'm not opening mine up to find out. Get an SSD for your laptop and it will rock!

A lot of portable 2.5" drives have the USB controller integrated into the mainboard these days, with no SATA connectors.

You can sometimes take a guess by the size. A 2.5" HDD is 100mm long, so there might be room in this case for a separate controller but it's hard to say for sure.

BTW the pic shows a Canvio Simple but the part number seems to be a Canvio Basic. Doubt there is much difference though.

      • You can open it up to check if the controller intergrated or not. I did all the time.

  • Metro delivery is free, mine is $26.

  • I have the 2TB version and runs like a dream! Tempted to buy this.

Same price on eBay Officeworks Store + 2% Cashback from Cashrewards

    • Still prefer to buy with discounted gift card from AMEX deal. Works out to only $58.65 after 15% off.

  • Read the terms and conditions for the Amex connect offer and it says gift cards are excluded.

    • There would be many people who could confirm they have already purchased their gift card and received their statement credit too.

  • Just stating what is on the website. Don't want to be disappointed if you expect the credit and don't get it. Still a good price.

    • +2

True, those same T&Cs come up over and over again, but despite what the T&Cs say, people do get their statement credits. I have received all 4 of mine from Liquor Land.

      • Thanks. Learn something new every day:-)

  • Thanks OP, got one.

Alright, but I got a Canvio II Slim 1TB for $75 from Dick Smith (not delivered) and I've seen it hit that price a few times. If not urgent may want to wait for that again…

    • I got the 1TB canvio 2 from DSE for $74 a few weeks back to use with xbox one… Guessing older model is being cleared…id suggest waiting too

  • Ordered one. Thanks OP.

Three years ago I purchased a Seagate with the same volume, also USB3.0, JB Hi-Fi "Factory Scoops" - Seagate Portable USB 3.0 1TB Expansion Drive $63.20 + $5 Shipping. It was a 2.5 inch portable drive.

Three years late, $69 is still a bargain price! Comparing to other electronic goods, that is what monopoly done to us.

    • I guess that may have something to do with the higher AUD ex-change rate back then. AUD exchange rates dropped around 30% since then, so it's like its price dropped 30% in other currencies. Just like the house price increased by 30% in Sydney, which probably seems the same price to foreign investors but it sucks to the local.

  • Anyone else been refunded through PayPal?
My workmate got refunded just then. I've got mine on credit card but haven't received confirmation yet.

Good deal if it goes through…

    • Why would this be so?
There were a few left at my local OW, and one of them scanned for the advertised price.

  • Noob question this will work with a Mac correct?

    • -2

Only if it cost you more than $2000. All the other Mac's are prevented access to this drive.

    • The question is answered on the link above actually - in the Q&A section.

  • can ow ebay purchases be paid for with gift cards and if doing it that way is it eligible for cash rewards?

    • I don't think you can use store gift cards on eBay

  • 2 left in Liverpool store NSW. Many display boxes though so idk how many out back.

  • 1TB was $89-99 RRP 1.5 years ago. Nice to see a general price drop despite the AUD's decline.

  • Expired?

    • No, still the same prices

  • Got one, thanks.

can you crack these open to get the hdd out for a laptop?

I opened a WD MyPassport and it had weird plugs. not standard sata+power

  • Bought this deal and am happy with the disk. Works well on OS X using Time Machine as well as Windows. Replacing a 3 year-old WD desktop drive which died and has better performance than the old drive when it was working well.
