MSY Special - D-Link DIR 868L AC1750 [Red Edition] Now $99 (Was $119 Last Week)

110

I was keeping an eye on this device from this posted a few weeks ago but it looks like MSY is really trying to clear it out — the price is dropped to $99 dollars! Usual RRP (for black version) is $179.

Grab it while it's red-hot, this is possibly one of the best OpenWRT or Tomato capable routers for under a hundred.

For the technical minded, it has Gigabit ports, USB 3.0 and it runs a Broadcom dual core processor clocked at 800mhz.

CPU Broadcom BCM4708X
RAM 256 MB
Flash 128 MB
Switch In BCM4708X
Radio (2.4 GHz) BCM4331
Radio (5 GHz) BCM4360
Antenna Type External (Dual Band)

For the not-so tech savvy, this router is RED in color so it will run circles around any non-red coloured routers.

The red one is definitely faster…

Especially if you paint racing stripes down the side.

Alternatively paint a silver and white ribbon from top to bottom and thieves will walk straight past it thinking it's just a warm can of soft drink!

      • Big mags and loud exhaust.

        • Draw on a KFC logo and a factory fitted strut brace, ACA will tell you that it's a drift router and it dangerously sends packets sideways.

          @Okibi:
Should be able to speed away via VPN tunnels without getting caught on the proposed legislations.

    • JV is definitely bolder

As a warning for those wanting to throw Tomato on it, due to the small NVRAM size, the Tomato build is a "special" build missing features you might expect from an otherwise powerful router — including OpenVPN, dnsmasq, and even SSH. They are supported by DD-WRT, but I found it to have flaky wireless in comparison.

    • DNSmasq is working sweet on my -$15 D-LINK 865L running Tomato with the same 32mb NVRAM issue as this.
      Haven't tested OpenVPN or SSH..

      • Where did you find a 865L for $15?

        • +5

minus $15… they paid me to take it.
From DSE… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/102502 .. Router cost $85 over the counter, but there was a $100 Cashback running on it at the time.
DLink changed the eligibility rules to exclude DSE from the promo but they couldn't deny claims by people who had already bought prior to the rule change.

    • There seem to be conflicting online references to two different RAM sizes of 128 and 256 MB. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/196824#comment-2801520. Can anyone with direct experience please help confirm?

  • May have my terminology incorrect but it's this a modem and router in one?

    • +1

no modem. this is a wifi router only.

      • Thanks!

  • Just bought one from the Slacks Creek store and was given the black, non-LE, version. Looks like they really want to clear all stock!

Just got mine. Very disappointed because the signal is pretty bad comparing to my old tplink 842n.

My pc used to have 300Mbps connection to the router. But with this 868l, only <200mbps connection for 2.4g. And the 5g signal is even worse, only <100mbps speed.

They are from the same distance, I just replaced this dlink 868l with the TPLINK 842n
