  • This is just so cheap. Unbelievable.

I really can't justify it because just a month ago I sold my 15.6" laptop and Galaxy 7.7 tab and bought an Asus 11.6" laptop so that I had less devices for a 12 month holiday. Now I am so tempted for $42. SO TEMPTED!

  • Would this run Foxtel play? I had a Pendo windows tablet from Coles and it just wasn't powerful enough.

    • it says it's compatible with XP and IE8 and above. It runs in a browser so it should be fine. Strange the pendo didnt run it.

  • Thanks Op.
Just ordered 7" one for pickup from HN @ DM North Ryde. Cheaper than Office 365 Personal subscription!

  • Apart from the very low resolution screen (it's natively something like 1024 x768 but set to 1200x800) I have had two issues; a stuck blue pixel and the inability to mirror to an external screen in a useful manner. It would only make a small square in the centre of the screen.

    • When you say mirror do you mean using the hdmi?

      • I think he means it will not scale up the 1280x800 to fullscreen 720p or 1080i out.
Not sure why you'd want that. Full-HD on external-only works fine.

        • Setting it to external only would require me to connect a keyboard and mouse since the touch screen would not be usable for those inputs.

        • @CyberGenesys:
Its just a windows software problem. The hardware is quite capable of doing what you want, but you can't find it in the Windows GUI.
I doubt any other win8.1 tablet will be different.
You need to google and gets your hands dirty on the command line or registry editor.

        • @manic: Google is currently telling me that running duplicated displays will always limit the resolution of both screens to that of the lowest screen. This is what I am experiencing and what should be expected, after all Clone/duplicate should result in an identical reproduction on both screens including identical resolutions. There are suggestions of 3rd party applications like display fusion or UltraMon but nothing as simple as a registry hack or CLI command. Care to shed a little more light on your solution?

        • @CyberGenesys:
I thought I saw something. there is a registry setting to enable downscaling. The unisurf already does that for 1280x800->1024x600, you just want the same but more. Might have a play when my hardware arrives.

        • @manic: No probs, please let us know if you find a simple solution that doesn't require 3rd party applications. I think you mean upscaling? The unisurf is natively 1024x600 (or abouts) and upscales to 1280x800.

      • Yeah, sorry. So when connected to a hdmi monitor via a mini hdmi to hdmi cable the image was 1280x800 on both screens with the external screen with black bars around the image. There seemed to be no option to scale to fit on the external monitor.

Had held back from buying for so long because I don't need this, but at this price it's just way too cheap to resist.

    • This is going to be my 5th tab… But can't resist at this price either.

Time to sell some of the older ones on Cex I think.

  • Can I run the windows (desktop) version of chrome on this?

I have plenty of tablets but I would like one where I can have chrome addons. Thanks

    • Of course. This is full x86 Windows.

      • Perfect, thanks.

  • +1

Is the 8" the same poor screen albeit at slightly higher resolution?

    • +2

      No… It's far better than the 7"
And has a separate power jack instead of shared micro usb.

      • Thanks. So it can't be charged via USB?

        • +1

Yes, it can't be charged through usb. Bad thing about that would be you can't use power banks to charge. Good thing is you can charge and connect usb devices simultaneously…..
Which is not possible with the 7" based on previous post….

  • Don't forget to use your Harvey Norman vouchers if you got them from the 10% back in vouchers deal. I think you will need to buy in store to use them.

and that's what happens when you have an arts degree.

    • Nice instructions, cheers.

  • 7 " Out of Stock for pickup in all stores near me.
Anyone think its worth delivery at all?

    • +2

It's an okay device if you want full windows and plan to use it on a monitor. It's almost unusable in portrait mode. The viewing angle are that bad, it's almost like looking into a mirror. It's really tempting at this price but I would spend a bit more and get something more usable. The resolution needs to be dropped to make desktop mode usable (otherwise it's very small) and that disables app mode.
I bought a bunch for family but regretted it.

      • How do you activate the office 365?does it come as a separate code or something? Or is it tied to the device?

        • Did it on the device it just links to your Hotmail. U can install anywhere

        • Is there a way of doing off the device as I was planning on not opening and giving it away

        • @pointnlarf: I'd suggest you open it and check as I got a returned unit in a sealed box. It even had the incorrect cables.
I think the key for office is built in to the tablet anyway.

        • @poop:
Sealed as in shrinkwrapped? I thought they came from the factory that way? The two I got were wrapped in clear plastic.

        • @grab_ur_freebies: yep shrink wrapped! Both of mine looked identical and sealed in shrink wrap. One was new with a screen protector. The other was missing this and had two chargers. Also had scrathes on the back. Looked like a repack from the factory?

        • @pointnlarf:

No, the code used for activation is embedded in the tablet.
You need to log in to your microsoft account using the tablet, and activate office there. Then you can do a factory reset.
You can install office 365 on another device to get the screenshots for the rebate claim.

    • Get 8" if you have to pay more! A add trend to bring the total to $150 and get $25 off
Display on 7" is so bad…. In portrait mode each eye sees different colours…. It's like some crazy 3D effect …

  • Can anyone confirm if I can buy one of these or multiple of these to top up my existing office 365 subscription?

  • +1

I am thinking to buy the 8" as xbmc (kodi) host, not sure how smooth will be.

    • The Intel GPU is good. It should be more than capable as a HTPC. But did you especially want Windows to host Kodi?
You might be better off with an Openelec solution, which may be possible on this, but not easy.

      • not really must be windows, I was thinking to get raspberry pi 2 but the cost of this tablet is smiler to raspberry pi 2 and I can take advantage of it with other uses.

        • Thats true, the RPI 2 is fantastic at running OpenELEC though!

  • Anyone here got the 8 inch and can give idea of performance.

    • +9

Anyone here got the 8 inch and can give idea of performance.

Well, I've never had any complaints.

  • what kind of cpu does it have? like a single core atom?

    • Quad Core

  • +1

    Cheers OP.

Purchased 2 x 8" for $169 with the $25 voucher (signing up to their newsletter).

After claiming cash back on both devices, they come down to $59.50 each.

    • you should buy one in a transaction with 3x Trend Micro security. This way you will end paying $47 for each one after the cashback and have 3x 8gb micro sd.

      • The maximum trend micro you can purchase in one transaction now been reduced to 2, which brings the total to only $137.
I didn't want to buy any junk to get it over $150.

        • Just in case anyone hasn't seen the other 8" Unisurf thread, the limitation on HN's webstore is 2 Trend Micro Security per line. You can add multiple lines by using, for example, Chrome's Incognito mode - I had to be logged into my HN account for it to work, but YMMV.

  • I just rang the store and asked them if they can get it ready for me now. They say they don't have stock so would have to get one in for me, doesn't sound good. This is the Cannington WA store.

  • +5

    As in previous thread:

    • the 7"is useless because the display is awful, and too few pixels for Windows.
    • you cannot easily use it as a desktop because it will not charge while using USB OTG.

    • The 8"is better as it has an acceptable display, and separate charge input, so can be used as tablet, desktop, or HTPC.

    • many people (incl. me) have reported wifi problems. A USB wifi or ethernet dongle may solve that.

    • 1GB RAM and 16GB flash is not much for windows, so be realistic in expectations.
    • I have WiFi problem. The unit is with HN as they are trying to fix it.

  • Wont this get a free upgrade to win 10?

  • +1

tempted and got the 10" instead..with $25 voucher

    • Just picked it up. Not bad at all for $97 windows tablet. Setting it up right now. Will tell you if I found "really bad" thing.

  • Decided on the 8 when I saw them side by side in the store. The guy convinced me to get a warranty, only $10.

  • Very tempting indeed but beware of the absolutely horrible viewing angle of the 7" model. Bought 2x7"last time and returned one. planning to sell the other one in gumtree or something..

  • Hardly any stock left 😠
I've got an open box one only hold for me. How do I know if the office 365 is ok and hasn't been used?

    • It has to be downloaded and installed and signed in to activate the code, so you should be pretty safe.

  • no USB port?

    • No, it has a USBOTG cable included.

      • Or you mean yes, micro usb and includes a otg cable

  • Freaking idiots sold the one I had put aside! Drove all the way to the store to find out!

    • Name and shame the shop

      • I don't think Gerry will give a proverbial

    • Did you pay online and pick up in store or phone the store to put one aside?

  • What will I have at home which I can use as a stylus on the 8 inch version?

    • I can think of 10 things, /off hand/…

      • Apart from those 10 things.

        • I can think of 11 more….

        • +1

@Jackson: I don't want to get arrested if I try and use my "stylus" in public.

tablet + 4 * trend micros (add to cart, add another item, add again, then increase quantity of both to 2) + $5 usb drive = $152
    minus $25 newsletter voucher
    minus $80 trend micro cashback (4 * $20)
    minus $25 microsoft cashback

= $22 for the tablet plus 4 microsds and a usb flash drive.

    • how did u manage to add 4 trend micros?

      • cant add more than 2 now

        • still works .. use chrome incognito mode and mess around with it .. you'll be able to add two of them as separate items in the cart and then you can increase the quantity of both of them to 2

gets you the tablet for $17 + $3 or more for another item (i bought a $5 usb drive)

  • How long does it usually take for the cashback to be processed?

    • +1

I received my trend casback in 10 days.

      • Do you get cash back on EFPOS card?

        • received in my bank account

    • I purchased this today and it says "Your $25 cash back will be deposited to your specified bank account within 60 days"

  • Is the 7/8" good for reading ebook/PDF? Been thinking to buy Asus memopad 7" for $170, but saw this bargain

    • +1

I actually find 8" better for reading documents (mainly because the screen ratio is more suited to reading documents. 7" can be a bit small but if what your reading reflect the text it's fine, it's mainly when you have a pdf that you want at least 8" IMO

In this case though the 8" as a screen that absolutely poops all over the 7"

      • Thank you

        • Sorry mate that was supposed to say "reflow text"

  • +1

had a look at the 8 inch tab in store i think display is good for the price.

    • +1

The whole unit is awesome for the price.

  • Would there be any reason why I shouldn't get an 8" one to download gigabytes at a time onto an external HDD via OTG? Anyone know what max wifi speeds are?

    • It's only Wireless N, so I'm guessing top speed about 5Mbits, consider though that it has to charge through the usb port as well, so it's not something you can just leave running over night…

      • Wireless N is much faster the 5 Mbit/s and should be much better than that even on a bad implementation. 802.11g should even get you 10-20 Mbit/s

      • 8" has separate charging and usb

      • The 8" doesn't charge through the use cable, only the 7" does

      • Doh. Guess this comment was just an epic fail then…

      • Might be able to use one of these on the 7" which doesn't have a dedicated charge port.
