This isn't a VPN service, it's for DNS.

This won't protect your privacy, all it is is a lookup service so it can provide you a different IP address for a domain name compared to your ISP's.

EDIT - their about page gives a better description https://www.viperdns.com/about.html

Is free beta software a bargain? Who pays for beta software?

    • +1

Usually early adopters of Microsoft products! ;-)

  • With VPN services watch out for services that do not default to encrypted traffic, if not done they can spy all your passwords as they are in clear text.

This service does not specify what if any encryption.

That because it's not a VPN!

  • Also company name is ViperDNS

    • changed

  • Also, are these people associated with Vyper VPN (the number two performer in Choice magazines roundup of VPN's) or are they just using a similar name to fool people?

  • how is this different to just logging into your router and changing your dns to one of the other free ones already established?

    • These services are not really about providing a DNS service. It's a proxy service. The DNS service just exists to automagically redirect certain traffic through their proxies (to make it look like you're in another country). I don't think there's any reputable free "Smart DNS" services.

This is a BETA and should not be posted as a bargain. It belongs in the forums.

Beta programs are generally buggy - so don't rely on them.
Beta service will expire and you will then have to pay.

There is usually a lot of diagnostics with BETA programs… possible loging of your web lookup history.

    • So only change your DNS on your AppleTV/FireTV/Nexus Player etc..

  • Is this essentially the same as tvunblock.com ?

  • This is BS:

    "Is ViperDNS safe to use?
Yes! We can't (and won't) watch or change any traffic when it's passing through our servers and we don't store any DNS or traffic logs."

They certainly can monitor and change any non-SSL traffic that passes through their proxies, which is any traffic they choose to redirect.

But hey, they are completely anonymous dudes with no address apparently in Curacao. Of course you can trust them ;)

    • I thought Curacao was that blue stuff you put into cocktails? ;)

Supports up to three IPs (awesome, just like dns4me)
Currently supports region changing for Netflix and Amazon Prime/Instant.

  • I was using Uflix.com.au for DNS with monthly subscription, but facing a problem whenever i restart my modem i have to reregister my new ip address on their website and restart all of my TV devices to get access to overseas NetFlix.

As my modem/router optus provided has functionality to automatically obtain IP address from ISP so whenever modem/router get hard reboot it obtains a new IP address, once i tried with static ip address setting than internet stopped working. Not sure anybody else face this issue or have a solution to it.

And not to mentions Uflix.com.au support sucks they never came back to my support ticked its allmost 3 weeks i asked them about it but no reply.

You need to set up DDNS or Dynamic DNS on your modem.
There's a how to on Getflix.

      • I have tried with Dynamic DNS but no luck as it wants url, userid and password and i have to provide all these as guess game as how to on Getflix doesn't tell regarding this.

        • You need to sign up with a DDNS provider.. The URL, username and password are so that your modem/router can verify that it's you.

  • I would strongly advise against using this company. They used thumbnail spam on free dns services to try and force you to sign up with them.

Who knows what else a company like this would do in the future.

  • I wouldn't be using a free DNS for privacy, they have no incentive to keep your data private… unless you are Google.

  • In the topic of "free" DNS service, I stumbled upon this: http://www.duckdns.org/

  • Unfortunately as per my own free dns post this one belongs in the forums. I myself don't mind them here but alas people prefer the discounted paid versions. That being said for those looking for a smart dns solution for their Netflix viewing pleasure see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198448
