I'm really sure that HP ProLiant N54L is not a deal at this price these days, maybe if it was below the $200 mark. I would probably pay the extra cash and get the HP MicroServer G8 if building a white box server is out of the question. With both options you are going to be spending extra cash for 8-16GB memory (depending on the use) At least if you go with the G8 you can throw a Xeon E3-1230 V2 into it later as a upgrade and then have a solid VMWare ESXi server which can run separate VMs for NAS, media server and firewall simultaneously.

    • g8 is supposed to be much more of a pain in the ass than the old school black cube

N54L is similar to a consumer PC in the way you build/manage it.

Gen8 is much more like a Proliant Server, has provisioning tools at boot etc, it is definitely a bit tougher to get going.

    • I agree to some extent with you, but for HP Microserver 54L it is cheapest at Staticice.

      • n36L was a deal @ around $13x first appeared on ozbargain……

$229 for n54L? I'd say it's "ok deal", specially the "n" series been released for quite a while….

Was going to say this goes on "sale" alot. Maybe there trying to get rid of it for newer stock?

Ha, I was told that over 12 months ago! "Not many N54Ls left, these will be our last as they're no longer available. The G8 will become the entry-level" etc. etc.

Just search for all previous deals on N54L Microserver on this site, it's just the same old rehashed deal that's been posted many different times by shopping express and other online stores for over the last year and a bit, give or take sometimes $20-$30 extra in price. Here comes the comment stating its still a good price because of the exchange rate and gst considerations :-). Consumers are frugal as ever in Australia now and wont part with their hard earned cash so easily anymore because of all the economic uncertainty, the chaotic job market, increased cost of living and overall gloomy outlook of the future of this country especially when it comes to spending on aging technology. To be a deal its got to hit that impulse buying trigger of the consumer and at this price without free shipping it doesn't.

  • If I was to put Win8 on the intel Nuc to play HD media and stream netflix would 4GB be enough or should I really be using 8 ?

  • Tempted to get this over a Synology NAS I've been eyeing off..

  • I am myself surprised the N54L is still going and still for sale - either HP are still making them or there is a warehouse somewhere in the world with a tonne of these things…

Given how much cpu's have moved along since this was released, it is starting to show its age compared to newer processors (more powerful, lower wattage)

Having bought a few for work, and myself they are however pretty solid, great as VM hosts, as FreeNAS servers etc…

I bought my first one (N36L) for ~$200 which included a 250gb drive in those days (in those days is when the AU dollar was stronger)

  • still using a N36L for HTPC, thinking if i should upgrade to this or not.

    • ill grab it off you if are upgrading

      PM me anytime

  • $13.45 delivery to Perth for the N54L
