D-Link DIR-685 Xtreme N300 Router with 250GB HDD Pre-Installed - $42.33 + Delivery @ Warehouse1

110

I was looking for a small portable router for travel and came across this awesome device: Gigabit Ethernet N300 router with Internal SATA storage (2.5" drive, SSD compatible).

Wifi, LCD photo display, Printer and USB sharing. And the usual router features.

Quite a unique device - never seen a router with internal storage or LCD display before.

Great price! Very happy with my purchase.

Good chance of being a pricing error?

Doesn't appear to be supported by Third Party Firmwares which in my books is essential these days, cause there's too many security holes that manufacturers never fix in consumer grade routers.
But could be handy just running as a WiFi range extender or local Print/File server.

No, they are just trying to get rid of them.

  • too old not supported and the summary is that it isnt a good photo frame, nor is it a good router

mwave used to sell them for $35 but didnt have too many takers

Have it and hate it. Only good thing about it is that I was able to see total current traffic on its diplsay

    tl;dr Don't waste your money.

While I'm not going to neg this, it does appear to be a 2009 model.

Not that I can talk, I'm still on a WRT54GL which is a 2002 model and because most of my clients are G I may not move for a while more. I understand the advantages get whittled down if you use N and above in mixed mode.

Still if I was spending money today I'd consider it wasted on a 6 year old model with no 3rd party firmware. Never mind that it is a pain in the butt and the latest official firmware from 4 years ago appears to still be buggy according to forums. Screen or no screen. Hard drive or no hard drive. (And let's face it 250GB is tiny by today's standards. I have tens of terrabytes of storage at home).

I take your point that it's old, but just need to pick your use for it.

Tens of Tb storage. AT HOME. Or access it via your 1Mbs upload from home.

I picked this one for travel.

Do you have another option for Gigabit ethernet portable NAS with option of 1Tb SSD which is hot-swappable?

      • For travel I use a pocket 3g modem router. I can have one connection wired via USB and up to 10 wireless clients. I tend to just use it wirelessly.

        • When I travel for work I bring a 3/4g myfi and i put a hdd in the cdrom tray for extra shite. Not dependent on hotel wifi which is often crap.

You're making things too complicated otherwise.

        • @tonyjzx:

I use either the Vodafone Extreme+ Pocket or Telstra MF91. Depends on which service I have activated at the time.

        • I needed an option with LAN for the work network.

Good when you can't rely on Wifi or 3G/4G

Not price error, cos mine got delivered today.

It's not my main router, only for travel. And always behind a firewall (LAN) so security not an issue.

I think it's just cool. Fits my purposes. And potentially useful to share music or storage when you're travelling with other people. I'm sure there are better options but nothing so small or cheap.

Haven't tested it, but I reckon a SATA connected SSD internal drive with a Gigabit ethernet would beat all other options for portable NAS.

    • How much was shipping?
I can't seem to find an "add to cart" button on the page. "Add to shopping list" just leads to a page saying "This function is not activated for your user group".

      • it was $11.95 for me, shipping Syd to Mel

Not sure why the Add button is gone, maybe email them

Well, it will work fine if there is only one device reading from it with a somewhat sub par speed of an GB port. It would fail if more than one devices try to access the HDD.

I used one of these before and it is completely unusable in my case.

Using it as a switch will be good. A photo frame on its own would also be good, but not as a NAS. It doesn't go that far.

      • Dunno, just formatted HDD, and it automatically appeared on my network, accessible by two computers, written and read to it. I'm happy.

        • What read/write speeds are you getting?

        • I wouldn't trust the in-built SMB file server on a home router.

As @netbies said, it would be OK for a gigabit switch or AP but it might not be a great idea to use it as a centralised data storage solution. I would rather pull-out the HDD and have it installed on PS3 or a laptop. It's still a good value.

Data is invaluable. You get what you pay for.

I think this device would be a perfect example for creativity of a product rather than product innovations.
It is very unique device indeed.

Not very interested but thanks OP anyway.
