Do these come with remote controls ?

  • So, how bright is 100 lumens?

Suitable as a hobby work light in a small area? Or too bright?

    Very interested..

    • It has a dimmer according to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jsDBiJnNc0

      • Integrated dimmer switch

        :)

The very bright hotspot could be a problem. This youtuber inserted a piece of paper behind the lens to act as a diffuser. Seems to work, although you'd lose some light. I'd probably use something more translucent.

There are also some diffuser plans you can download from thingyverse if you have a 3D printer.

The Flare has a diffused beam with no hotspot, according to Joby.

      • +1

Just be careful you don't start a fire with home made diffuser. Make sure the light isn't getting significantly hotter or hot enough to ignite the paper/material the diffuser is made of.

        • No need to worry, Miss Worry Pants. This LED isn't capable of igniting anything.

Paper is also sometimes used as an insulator in electrical components - OMG! think of the children!!!

        • @Son ofa Zombie:

Wow. I'm impressed. You just managed to insult women, those who would protect children, and show both your ignorance and your arrogance in one line.

LEDs can get VERY hot. I have a couple of tiny handheld torches not much bigger than an AA battery that can get way too hot to touch. There are videos on Youtube demonstrating how you can start a fire on purpose with a flashlight. They aren't all fake.

        @eug:
I just found that the lens from a cheap crappy broken 6W downlight fits almost perfectly in the JOBY GorillaTorch. It gives a nicely diffused 70-80 degree field of light instead of the spotlight lens it comes with. If you turn it around, the lens pokes out of the front, but it gives you a 180 degree field. Very handy! It won't be waterproof anymore as the new lens is slightly smaller than the provided O-ring, but if you use it indoors or under cover it's fine.

It's almost worth buying a crappy 6W downlight just to use the diffuser lens:
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/6W-MR16-12V-LED-Downlights-Cool-W…

I found some slightly cheaper LED downlights but it looks like the lens won't unscrew. If somebody can find a cheaper one, please let me know. It's hard to find anything on eBay anymore as so many idiots list $1 or $1.50 empty boxes or 'light beads' in their multiple-listings, so you can't find what the actual cost of the item is until you click through a bunch of checklists. When they do that I report them and blacklist the seller, but there are so many it's infuriating!

        • +1

Cool, thanks for the update! I'll keep an eye out for a suitable downlight.

    • +1

A standard light globe is about 800 lumens. A standard down light is about 450 lumens.

    • 100 Lumens isn't that bright, it depends on how focused the light is, 100 lumens focused on a a small area will be very bright. A 50watt downlight is about 700-800 lumens.

why cotd not selling in pairs…
anyone in sydney cbd want to swap one tripod with one torch?

    • same situation here..wish they would sell a torch and tripod pair

anyone in perth want to do a swap ?

      • i am in perth, but i dont have any of it!

      • In Perth, I got 2 tripods, will happily swap one.

    • PM'ed

    • paired with samlor for swapping. thanks

  • +2

This does not seem to work, price is $14.98 which is less than the discount of $15? - Or maybe because I just created an account.

    • I'm getting getting $14.97?

      • I think first-time app users get $5 off. I did anyway.

    • you cant just create account and get to use the coupon….

      • Thanks

    • REWARD1 - COTD $10 Voucher or $15 Via App

      • Yep. I got $15 via app. Total $9.99 delivered.

  • Anyone knows how well they work with NiMh cells?
    Nothing like guilt-free lumens.

  • Use REWARD2 for $15 but might be targeted this time around.

    • +2

      Didn't work for me.

    • REWARD2 works if you used REWARD1 before the end of Sunday 19th July 2015.

      • Doesn't work for me says "Your coupon couldn't be validated because some items in your cart need to be updated" I have deleted and re-added the item numerous times in both colours with no luck. Have already used the reward1 coupon too.

        • reward2 works for me

        • I also get the same messages "Your coupon couldn't be validated because some items in your cart need to be updated".
@sween64 or @kdtrey35, any specific item we need to add to make REWARD2 code works?

  • anyone in perth want to swap a torch for a tripod?

    • Yeah I bought the torch, i'll pm u

      • yup replied

  • Thanks bought 1.

  • +2

I don't suppose the torch attaches to the tripod via a standard ¼" thread? That'd be handy.

    • +1

No, tripod and torch cannot be separated. It does't have normal tripod thread.

  • Torch for a tripod dont these come with tripods

  • I placed order for torch thinking tripod is included you sure tripod is not with torch??

  • More torches!!! nice… thanks OP :-)

  • So are you getting torch only or torch and tripod as i thought it was both why show pics of both?

    • just confirmed in the chat on COTD, torch comes with stand as shown in pic.

      • I think the real question is whether or not the tripod is detachable to be used with a camera.

        • ^this

torch does not detach from the actual gorillapod

so if you don't need 2 torches and would prefer to have a gorillapod to use for your camera or gopro in my case, look for a swap

    • As per the specs it will be torch/gorilla pod and I believe the GP can be dismantled

    • -2

Cheap torches suck. They'll work ok for the first month or so, then will start failing quick.

      • +3

Ive had my $3 cree ultrafires going strong for 2 years and I reckon plenty others here would have as well.

        • +1

How often do you use them, and in what situations?

I've bought quite a number of cheapies and not-so-cheapies and they all eventually start getting dodgy. Poor solder connections, corrosion on battery terminals, reflectors that crack or cloud up, switches that wear out… I gave up and bought some mid-priced Thrunites and Surefires. No problems with those.

        • +1

@eug:How often do you use them

          Every night

          @eug: and in what situations?

          as a light
I even have a couple mounted on my bike as an additional light source.

        • @Davros:

          as a light

OK, so light-duty casual use at home then.

I even have a couple mounted on my bike as an additional light source.

Is the driver regulated? Does the brightness diminish gradually (directly driven), or is brightness mostly maintained till the battery is exhausted?

You've never had to shake, knock, or fiddle around with them to get the light working or running at full brightness? The reflectors are still as shiny as when you got them 2 years ago? The lens hasn't gotten scratched?

If no, then I would consider you lucky! I'm quite sure many people who have tried $3 torches would only find them acceptable in less crucial or demanding environments.

        • -1

@eug: Completely agreed. I personally have Olights and a few Thrunites which I got at bargain prices. All completely worth it when you consider longevity, efficiency, regulation, brightness, and build quality.

I don't bother with the cheap crap anymore.

        • -1

@eug: If it ends with XXX-Fire, it is bad. Literally.

        • @Son ofa Zombie: …with the exception of Surefire of course. Funny, from the negs it looks like people here only use their torches… lightly. Ha ha ha! ducks

    • +1

bought gorilla pod from ebay cheapo.
      breaks in a month

      • Same here - I first started with an ebay cheapie. One of the joints got loose quick, then popped off. I then bought an original and it has been working fine since.

  • +1

Cant sèe any point in selling torch without a tripod or im getting mixed up here?then why people swapping torches for tripods or do you want to own both torch with included tripod and a tripod also?

  • Almost sold out…

  • Had $10 credit on account so grabbed a pair for $5.

Dont know how youse are getting confused - package comes with 2x torches attached to tripods.

    • "attached", of fixed. that is/was the confusion.

      • Meh…either or… Bottom line is you dont need to travel across the city to meet up with someone to swap legs

    • Torch is not removable according to this old article: Gizmodo GorillaTorch Review

  • thanks op! glad I didn't buy the x2 joby gorillapod last night. saved 60%! :)

  • Thanks OP bought a pair. Will be handy working under the bonnet.

  • Thanks, just nabbed a pair

  • Wish the tripods had magnetic feet too

Anyway, if anyone in syd wants to swap a tripod (black & grey) for a torch.. pm me :)

  • Using the Catch app on iOS, REWARD1 is coming up as a $10 discount, not $15. Is it happening for anyone else or just me / "user error"?

    • I'm using the Catch app on android and discount is only $5..?

      • did you apply REWARD1 coupon code?

    • same, only getting a $10 discount.

    • Same issue. $10 off is good, but I did go for the deal due to the $15 saving.

    • +1

have you bought via app before? extra $5 seems to be for 1st app order

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/203352#comment-2910470

      • Yes, dl the app for the first time on my windows phone, still only got $10. Anyway, still bought.

  • thank you. impulse buy but glad I registered so was an 'existing user' a few months ago, to get 2 torches for $9.99 = $5 each for decent torches!

now I have a use for my eneloops!

  • i need reward3 code now!
    and maybe new enelooops haha

    • Is it going to be $20? :D

  • Guys, had the $15 discount via chat. So you get $10 from the code and they credit $5 on your account. Just told them I'm only getting $10 instead of $15. They happily gave me $5 on my account, no dramas. Should tell them you're trying to purchase via app. Good luck!

    • I have the same problem, but can't be bothered complaining over $5.
Already wasted more than $5 worth of my time trying to get the $15 to work.

  • +3

Lots of misinformation in this thread.

What you will be purchasing is 2 x flashlights with integrated tripods, you CAN'T remove the flashlights from the tripods.

    • Agreed RE misinformation.

Unless you know anything about the Joby, it can be easy to misinterpret. I have one of the very first Joby gorilla pods designed to hold weights up to DSLR and it's still going strong - easily 5-6+ years old.

Anyhow, I bought 2 of each pair (2 lights, 2 tripods) because the tripods have the quick release attachment. These are great to double as flashgun stands!

      +1 to OP.

      • +1

        +1 without the plus? ;)

        • Whoops! Transferring through airports, flights > OzBargain unfortunately! Haha

  • +1

I have tried buying this with the mobile app. But can get only $5 as a discount, which makes it 19.97. How do i get the price OP mentioned?

    • are you using the REWARD1 coupon?

      • and if REWARD1 doesn't work then save $10 via referral :)

    • My bad, I didn't read the coupon link above for T&C.

  • Does anyone in Melbourne cbd want to swap a tripod for a torch? PM me! :D

  • +2

At what point did a torch become a flashlight in Australia?

    • +2

At what point did it matter?

      • Who said it mattered? It's just a question, because it's really only in North America that it is called a flashlight, and all other speaking countries call it a torch.

        • when north Americans come to Australia:p

        • +1

We call them illuminators in my village

        • @pointless comment:
You've accidentally said something smart there PC… because it would make a lot more sense to call them 'illuminators' rather than 'flashlights', as that's their usual purpose. Most of them do not actually 'flash' (as in on-off-on-off), so the US term 'flashlight' has always amused me. I'm now wondering what the yanks call the thing attached to cameras that ACTUALLY DOES 'flash', enabling photographers to take pics at night…

        • -3

@GnarlyKnuckles: Time to stop drinking and go to bed GK… you're babbling :P

          And easily amused, apparently

        • -1

          @pointless comment:
Ah PC, reliably true-to-name as always. Now, while imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, I cordially invite you to observe your own advice, that just yesterday you were so keen to dispense (I've corrected the grammar used therein, to render it actually readable):

"Before you post, read it back to yourself and if it's not funny, or simply rehashing others' posts back to them … just don't bother."

It is painfully apparent that you refuse to take my sage advice. But surely you realise that not even adhering to your own advice is the absolute pinnacle of hypocrisy?

        • -2

@GnarlyKnuckles: dude please go away. Judging by some of your previous posts, you must be 40+…if you need to prove how psuedo-intelligent you think you are to someone half your age- on a freakin internet forum no less- you need to check yourself, yo.
