  • I'm also eyeing on a laptop these days. I'm more biased towards rMBP and really can't decide which one (rMBP or UX303) to buy. any advice?

    • +2

Hmm, simplest decision to make is to decide whether you want Apple OS or Windows 8.

      • Well really Windows 10.
Isn't there a significant price difference as well?

      • pls see my EDIT ans below. thanks.

    • Windows 10 vs Apple iOS.
Better hardware vs inferior hardware in the Apple product that also costs more.

    • EDIT: I have been using Windows (XP, Win7) for many years but recently I have switched to Ubuntu. I like the solid feel in macs but the base price of rMBPs really stretches my budget. Also if I'm gonna buy a mac I won't probably buy the AppleCare (which you have to spend more), so is the maintenance cost of macs high? in case if something gets defective.

      • No, Australian consumer law warranty covers you.

        • you must be joking, wonder why people buy it then?

        • @kiLbiL: Because it's less hassle than convincing random staff about ACL.

    • Depends whether price is a major issue for you, i believe the UX303 is cheaper. With that said, ive used my rMBP for almost 5 years now, running like a beast still (although i did slab a SSD onto the machine). I personally think if you are going to be using it for strictly no gaming then go for the Mac.

Screen res is 1920x1080 on an IPS panel FYI.
    https://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ZENBOOK_UX…

    • link to model name?

      • -4

Sorry its a different model by name, but the only difference is the shell. IMO doesn't warrant a 500 price difference

        The differences are:
        No SSD
        Screen not HD, although bigger
        i3 not i5

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-15-6-F555LA-XO031H-W8-1-Note…

        • +4

Different model altogether. The F55 is the mainstream model that is twice as thick as this - difference is buying a standard Notebook vs an Ultrabook. Differences are thickness, Screen resolution and CPU (i3 vs i5) plus SSD drive (not 500GB clunker). Chalk and Cheese comparison..

        • +6

Having an SSD is a significant difference
Screen being smaller and full HD makes it a significantly better screen
The screen is also a touch screen
The difference in performance between the i3 and i5 models is over 50% - http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-4210U-vs-Intel-Core-i3…
It is also 6-7mm thinner and almost a kg lighter
It has an illuminated keyboard, and a better battery

          … but I guess they're pretty similar

Ultrabook is a marketing joke to compete apple, both overpriced in what you get but idiots will buy it.

I bought an 15 inch ASUS i7 with an Nvidia graphics card that OK wasn't as thin as paper but it costed $650 3-4 years ago (before the ultrabook term came to light)

          @bchliu:

What you're getting is not worth $9—

        • +1

          @pezpera:what gen i7?

        • -2

          @trumpedup:

It was the current gen at the time which was 2012.

Intel Core i7 3610QM. (quad core)

Compare that to the current gen at the time macbook pro (2012) which was Intel Core i7 3520M (dual core).

Compare the prices too, the crux of the point is the price difference.

The ultrabook name is srsly an insane price gouge, no matter the specs - 500 extra is not worth it.
SSD's are $100 now too lol

        • -3

          @pezpera:

          Actually that's a hilarious point.

My laptop from 2012 that costed $650 has a better processor AND graphics card then this 2015 one for $900. Pretty thin too, I should just upgrade the HD to a SSD :P I don't want a HD screen that's 13inch when for $250 less I have 15"

Downvote all you like, I'm right. Ultrabooks are a hilarious marketing joke (that works too well).

        • I assume you are referring to this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208973

          Specs copied from that post:

          15.6" LED Display
          4th gen Intel® Core i3-4010U Processor (Dual Core, 1.7GHz)
          4GB RAM
          500GB HDD
          Intel® HD Graphics 4400
          Windows® 8.1
          2x USB 3.0
          1x HDMI
          1x USB 2.0
          38.2(W) x 25.6(D) x 2.58 (H) cm
2.30 KG (with 2 cell battery)

          VS the ultrabook:

          13.3" 16:9 IPS FHD (1920x1080)
          Intel Core i5 4210U 1.7 GHz ~ 2.7 GHz Processor
          8GB RAM
          128GB SSD
          Intel HD Graphics 4400
          Windows 8.1
          3x USB 3.0
          1x HDMI
          32.3(W) x 22.3(D) x 1.80 ~ 1.92 (H) cm
1.45 KG (with 3 cell battery)

          Comparison:

The ultrabook has the better screen (IPS has better viewing angles)
The ultrabook has the better processor
The ultrabook has double the RAM
The ultrabook has the better storage drive (a 128GB SSD is better value than a 500GB 5400rpm HDD, and much faster)
          Same graphics
          Same OS
The ultrabook has more USB 3.0 ports
The ultrabook is at least 0.66cm thinner
          The ultrabook is 0.85KG lighter
The ultrabook has better battery life

          @brotherrfranciz:

Are you even reading where I write not worth the price 20 times?

One is a $400 computer, one is a 600 THAT COSTS 900 BECAUSE THE ULTRABOOK NAME

Im not comparing an i3 with i5, im comparing the price difference of paying DOUBLE for a mediocre pc because its an ultrabook.

EDIT: also it 4gb not 8

        • @pezpera:

Oops, good pick up on the RAM (I was looking here: https://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ZENBOOK_UX…) Not sure what that is about, maybe a slightly different model…

Yes, I did read your posts. My post was to justify the price difference. Laptops get exponentially more expensive with better specs, so IMO the price difference is justified, seeing as the ultrabook is better in almost every regard.

        • @brotherrfranciz:

          pezpera got ripped off hahaha!

        • -1

          @Fck:

          I didn't pay $900 for a $600 laptop ;)

    • +1

Was it, though? Seems like you didn't get a 1080p IPS screen.

    • Sounds like you are still trying to justify your own purchases here.. hahaha

      • -3

Lol buy what you like, I'm more trying to explain how terrible of a purchase an ultrabook is, and if you were to look at laptops without the gimmicky "ultrabook" bs you'll find quality i7's for the same price or lower.

Trying to save people from bs marketing tactics because its .5 cm thinner.. f*** me right?

        • Ultrabooks aren't terrible. They're made to be extremely light, and power efficient without any compromises on the user experience, where are netbooks are for those who want light and no power.
"Ultrabook" is a standard set by Intel. Like RSPCA certified for your groceries, or Halal for those who want it.
If you want to go for money vs pure performance alone, why not just carry a desktop + monitor around?

Trying to save people from bs marketing tactics because its .5 cm thinner.. f*** me right?

Not really. You said "Buy this inferior product, it's the same" (It was COMPLETELY different)

I paid $400 a few days ago for the same model, i3, same default graphics card and 15inch.

          1) "Same" Model - Nope
          2) "Same" default graphics card - err.. if you call integrated graphics… a graphics card.. okay
          3) "15 inch" screen, because clearly 15 is the same as 13, not to mention that your "15" inch was a cheap TN panel, not an IPS panel with 10 points of touch capability. Colour accuracy matters to some users as well (photo editing for example)
          4) HDD vs SSD - 20-30 second boot time vs 3 second boot time. Sure you can upgrade it on most laptops (hardly any ultrabooks but luckily this one you can) I'm not talking from Waking up to sleep. I mean from completely shut off to Desktop.
          5) More RAM - Upgradeable yes. But clearly not the same model.
          6) 37Whr battery vs 50Whr battery - This is SIGNIFICANT. Laptops are meant for mobile computing.
          7) Normal Webcam vs HD Webcam - Yes the difference is noticeable

Clearly not the same model. Same brand maybe.

          @cwongtech:

If people prefer an 'ultrabook' i5 laptop with a standard gfx card for $900 rather then something like http://www.dicksmith.com.au/laptops-notebooks/asus-15-6-f555… for the same price then all the power to them. Really, its still incredible stupid.

Also the i3 I bought was $400, right. Now the i5 this deal has is $500 more, its $900. Remember the $500 more bit. Instead of saying model I should have linked to an i7 that costs the same and is infinitely times better. The price is not justified. Ultrabooks should cost more, but THIS ultrabook is still deeply overpriced even if on special.

I'm saying for a price you're paying for an ultrabook, get ANYTHING else - unless you're stupid. Also SSD's are cheap, upgrade whatever.

        • I'm saying for a price you're paying for an ultrabook, get ANYTHING else - unless you're stupid. Also SSD's are cheap, upgrade whatever.

Do you not understand that people want a lighter laptop with a better battery life, better processor a better screen that has touch capabilities, faster storage solution? Not to mention different materials used in the laptop chassis (plastic vs almost entirely all aluminium)

The only thing you can upgrade in your laptop is the Harddrive to SSD. Almost every other component is completely inferior to the UX303 line. Stop comparing a Nissan Micra to a Nissan 370Z.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But I guess the negs on your comments reflect other OzBargain members' thoughts.

If people prefer an 'ultrabook' i5 laptop with a standard gfx card for $900

I'm not sure what your point of the graphics card argument is.. both this deal and your beloved laptop don't have dedicated graphics cards. They both weren't made to play games.

You sound like one of those people who never use any pens other than the "$1 for a pack of 100" and think those who pay $2 for a really nice pen are bonkers.

  • Got the last one of these from DS Dandenong (bought Saturday just before midnight - picked up Monday). With fathers day coupon (-$85) it cost me $894 C&C.

It's great ultrabook (although it is slightly larger, thicker and heavier than my wife's 2-year old Samsung ATIV 9).
The good thing is that it is easily upgradeable. Eg, from 4GB -> 12GB RAM for $65 (MSY). You can also add mSATA SSD of your choice in addition to built in 2.5" SSD.
Was going to get UX-303LN (nVidia 840) from FutuOnline during the 20% off eBay sale (hence my just before midnight purchase time), but decided that for $222 less I could have this one instead (used spare change to buy Brother MFC-L2700DW.
UX-303LA has same processor but half a RAM (which is cheap anyway) and no nVidia (which doesn't bother me as it will actually increase battery life). This being destined to be my son's school laptop - so gaming not issue either - or "so you think dad", says my son ;).

This is a good deal if you can still find some stock. It's old gen 4 i5 model.

  • Smoky brown? where's the brown in the picture?

  • Might be worth waiting to see how the Skylake U cpus perform as they're set to be released in September as well as the new Surface Pro 4 which is rumored to be announced this month or in October.

  • No significant performance difference between Skylake vs Broadwell, according to
First Core i7-6500U Skylake benchmarks leak online

I bet Skylake will be more power efficient. Let waits and sees.

  • This offer is available again with the codes HUGE50 for orders above $499, or HUGE 100 for orders above $999

    • PSA: DO NOT BUY EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM DSE - It's cheaper from ASUS directly, and if you need to exercise warranty DSE will just serve as middlemen anyway

DSE [Must buy with purchase or within 14 days - Source DSE facebook rep]
      1 year extended - $99
      2 year extended - $129

ASUS Warranty [Must create account to purchase + activate before your included 1 year runs out]
      1 year extension Local - $69
      1 year extension International - $99
      2 year extension Local - $99
      2 year extension International - $149

Found this out when looking up extended warranty options (for the UX303LB)
