Can you elaborate a little as to why you say that please.

      • +1

I currently use them and their service was brilliant. They also help me setup a web browser proxy in about 10 minutes (because of the chrome IP leak).

I get pretty much maximum speed unless its busy down here and get roughly 2/3rds of my 'normal speeds' (using different proxies).

        Without VPN
        3.47Mbps

        With VPN
        Without VPN
        3.01Mbps

For the price and the servers i would be happy with that - considering i am also in Perth and a country location.

EDIT: I should say it does come up randomly that some IP's are banned and cannot access certain websites. I have not used another VPN product, but at this time for the price i am very happy.

I should say it does come up randomly that some IP's are banned

That's only to be expected. Public VPNs like this will sometime be Google banned for scraping or other "abuse".

        • @Diji1:

Thanks i didn't search the reason why, i just turned it off and relooked at the page. Im sure there would be another that would work.

The deal links to an uploaded picture - I assume this is the site/VPN service: https://torguard.net/anonymoustorrentvpn.php

Looks like US$60/year for unlimited VPN (US$30/yr with lifetime discount?)

VPN.ac that Ive also been looking at is US$58/yr (US$46.40 with current 20% promo)

So TorGuard seems the cheaper option at US$30/yr. Both say P2P/torrents allowed.

  • Is there any recent speedtest on TorGuard? No VPN I have tried so far made it past 3MBit to a USA server compared to the 40MBit I get w/o VPN.

    • From memory I would get around 10meg I am on tpg fttb 100megs normally

    • nvm

Hi, looking at this or PIA from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/209830 Would anyone have an opinion to which one to go for? Thanks

    • +1

I am on the fence at the moment as I hear some people swear by PIA but on the other hand previous deals for Torguard have had their fans as well.

I suppose for the price it is worth a punt and if it doesn't suit then after the year can it for something else. If it does turn out to meet your needs then this price for life (assuming the general price of their plans don't go up, or they go belly up) is a pretty sweet deal.

Some will always slam one service over another.

    • +2

Don't know much about PIA, but I have been using Torguard now for about 6 weeks. simple program to logon. Speed is slower than not using vpn, and I switch between only 4 of the many servers available, but my download speed ranges from 900k to 2.2Mb. (I get 1.5 to 2.8mb without on my 50MB nbn.)
I will be renewing next year!

    • +2

LifeHacker has reviewed both of them before, and both rate well: http://lifehacker.com/5935863/five-best-vpn-service-provider…

I might bite the bullet with this deal (since its a lifetime deal, but only requires initial 1yr payment, rather than 2yr with PIA) and will post speed results.

      I am stuck on ADSL1 - get around 7.1 Mbit according to speedtest.net - I often get 700 to 800 KB/sec downloads.
All VPN's cause a speed reduction - Id be happy to still get half my current speed.

If I run the VPN from my primary PC only (which downloads), rather than my router, the VPN wont slow down my US Netflix streaming, or Skype etc on my media PC or tablets.

      • Hi
Can you please elaborate how did you achieve Netflix US without running vpn on your router. I am in a similar situation, got vpn running on primary laptop, mobile and iPad. The issue is how to cast Netflix on chromecast and roku, or maybe WDHD TV live. Only option appears to be to run vpn on my router (nighthawk). However to do that i need to setup a DyDNS.

        • I don't use VPN for Netflix. I use Getflix DNS service, set on router so all devices at home can use it. No slowdown.

VPN is only used on my downloads pc.

        • @systmworks: A bit late to the party here, but why aren't you using the Getflix VPN service?

        • @nstyle: hah good question. To be honest, I had forgotten about it.
And I thought they didnt support P2P, but I see now they do have some P2P friendly servers.
I just checked and I do have Getflix VPN set up in Windows - I think when I tried it out it was quite a bit slower - so stopped using it. That was in the first week or so they offered it - may have improved now.
Torguard has been connected for 73 hours now, no drops, and while Ive only had 2 downloads, I was getting 500-700 KB/sec which is near my ADSL1 maximum.
Might give Getflix another go sometime.. but for the moment Ive got 6 months of Torguard (which seems to be going well) for $15.

        • @systmworks: Yeah that's pretty quick. I've running the Getflix one for about 3 months. Speed tests for my regular connection are about 12Mb/s and through the VPN (server in Stockholm) is a consistent 5. Works great for torrents, but yeah I guess you don't need it for 6 months now ;)

I needed port forwarding which Torguard was able to provide for free after a bit if back and forth to setup. Good price, good speed, easy to use GUI, servers in countries I wanted and switches are not charged. I think PIA and Torgurad are both in the very good bracket, just look at the features to make sure it has what you need.

      • +2

+1 for torguard as well. I've found them good so far.

  • +1

Something to note, 6 months cost $30, 1 year $60, and 2 years, $120, so there does not seem to be any financial benefit choosing a longer term, since the 50% discount is a recurring / lifetime discount.

So I am going to choose the 6 month option for now.
It also asks whether you want a free Viscosity License (default is No).

I wasnt sure what that was.. it seems to be a more fully featured VPN client.. and they have a comparison between the normal "lite" VPN client and the "Viscosity" one.
    https://torguard.net/blog/torguard-lite-vs-viscosity-vpn-cli…

I cant see any reason not to say YES so the Viscosity license..

    • Not sure how Viscosity would work if the VPN is configured at the router…… Which is what I think I would be doing.

      Anyone know differently?

    • +2

Get the Viscosity license because it's free and you may use it later.

Torguard lite client -> simple choose the server and click connect
Viscosity -> same functionality as above but more settings and not as simple

Using the VPN at router level you won't use either. I used Viscosity with a settings file they sent me for the port forwarded IP which they setup for me. I use that on my server and the Torguard lite client onb all my other computers.

  • Does this keep 7 days log? Forever? Or none

P/s: Review stated none. So good deal. Aud drop - bad one

Thinking of cyberghost. 5 servers only 9.99aud

Guys. Is it worth to pay 3x more?

  • Too many VPN services to choose from. Some say Mullvad, PIA, TorGuard and Cyberghost.

Choice review rated PIA 91% and TorGuard 56% in performance.
    https://www.choice.com.au/electronics-and-technology/interne…

I'm still using the 6 months free trial Freedome.

  • I have been with torguard for years, great speeds and excellent service.
TIP: many isp's now lower the priority of VPN traffic via QOS, so can be slow during peak Netflix times. So don't rush to blame your VPN provider.

Not to mention any names M2 group, support confirmed this to be the case.

Switched to Belong a few months ago, speeds back to what they were before Netflix.

  • +3

OK, signed up for Torguard, 6 months at US$15 recurring.
Tried the Viscosity client briefly, but could not get a connection. Will go back to that client later if I need to.
Installed the Torguard lite client, and found it connected immediately.

Speedtest.net results on my ADSL 1 connection:

    • 7.1 Mbit - no VPN connected
    • 5.1 Mbit - with VPN to Sydney (71% of no-VPN speed)
    • 4.8 Mbit - with VPN to Melbourne (68% of no-VPN speed)
    • 4.2 Mbit - with VPN to Canada (59% of no-VPN speed)

Interestingly, I had to disconnect the Sydney VPN and connect to Melbs instead, as OzBargain would let me browse, but not post comments, using the Sydney IP - came back with an IP banned (or similar) error message.

    • will you get the 50% off for life? it stated only if u sign up for 1 year subscription

      • I signed up last night for 6 months and used the code and it came down to USD 15 for me.

For those people running a VPN, I suggest running a DNS Leak Test. Many sites offer it, such as https://ipleak.net

I found my browsers (Chrome and Firefox) were leaking my real router DNS address (WebRTC detection), until I turned off an advanced option in Firefox, and installed a plugin in Chrome.

    • This is why TorGuard was so good, i went to this website and the guy showed me exactly how to setup my web browser with their proxy for Chrome.

  • anyone experience constant drop out? I need to unplug my wireless usb and reconnect to get connected again…..

    • My pc has been connected to the Melbourne VPN for over 30 hours without disconnection.

  • +1

highly recommended, I've been with them for two years now. Use it all over the world including in China. Customer service is quick and helpful too. Watched AFL games for free via the Sydney server, no issues.

Interesting read (I don't use either of these VPNs so no bias here)

Torguard copied VPN.AC Chrome Extension and implemented it insecurely

Another informative post, obviously geared towards promoting their stance on VPNs but worth a read.

Myths about VPN logging and anonymity

  • Just want to point:

"You can be absolutely sure if a VPN provider is pressured to cooperate with authorities and they have any information to identify you as the suspect you will be up shit creek and you will be there without a paddle.
