G1W-CB 1080p Dashcam - $49 Shipped - eBay Group Deal - 600 Units Available

1650

Bought a number of these form a previous OzBargain deal direct form China for about $8 more than this (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/200052). Installed a couple in each of our cars, one front view & the other rear view. They works exceptionally well and I've had no problems with them at all. Props to Millzy for recommending the Samsung Memory Cards: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-32GB-EVO-UHS-I-Micro-SDHC… as they seem to suit these units perfectly and seem to address some of the issues others have using other brand/model cards.

Highly recommended, especially for this price. I'm going to get some more for Christmas presents :)

Now to get out the Sharpie and colour in the stupid logo!

has anyone ever figured out how to change the date on the display on these?

    • +10

I had issues with this and discovered that you have to have the date format set to YYYY-MM-DD before it allows you to change the date. Once set you can flip the format back to DD-MM-YYYY no problem.

      • Cheers! ill give it a try :)

OP, How did you power the rear dashcam?

        • +24

OK, first thing I did was buy a few different mounts from China as I had no idea which would suit best until I started playing around with them all. I ended up using two of these in the end: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3M-Adhesive-Mount-Holder-Bracket-… one to stick to the Windscreen for the front-facing camera which makes it SO much neater than the suction/mirror mount alternatives and I removed the doube-sided tape and drilled a hole in another to mount the rear-facing camera as described below.

As I wanted to run two and didn't want wires etc. all over the place I knew I had to build up a small 5V Power Supply to suit based on these small inexpensive modules: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-DC-Buck-Converter-Step-Down-Mo…. I connected the custom Power Supply to the wires feeding the Cigarette Lighter Socket and included a fuse of its own which is overkill be 'meh' may as well ;) I then cut the cables from the original Cigarette Lighter adaptors and extended one by about 1m then fed them both up the passenger side A-Pillar along with other original wiring carefully avoiding the curtain air-bag. I then tucked one up into the hood lining at the top of the Windscreen and dropped it down to feed the front-facing camera then carefully tucked the other extended cable where the roof lining meets the door opening etc. until I got it all the way around to the rear. It's a Hatchback and has three very convenient plastic plush-in plugs to hold the roof lining up so I simply removed the central plug and found a large screw in my collection that bit into the mounting hole perfectly then I just screwed it in through the hole in the mounting plate in the link above.

This all took a bit of effort bit it has resulted in a front & rear camera setup that works perfectly and is about as neat as it can be. Apart from the 3-minute screen at startup I don't even know they exist.

        • @SteveAndBelle: wow I am amazed ;)

        • +3

@kungfupanda: Heh, thanks… but it really isn't that amazing. Just needs a bit of time & patience.

        • @SteveAndBelle: where exactly do you put it on the front windscreen with that linked ebay mount? Centre behind mirror?

          Pics would be awesome :-)

Also slightly OT but how safe are cigarette socket splitters? Still want to charge the phone sometimes as well as using the dashcam.

        • +1

@plasmapuff: Yeah, as high & centred as possible and out of view from the driving position because it can be distracting for the first 3 minutes before it goes into screen-saver mode. Each to their own though and a lot of it depends on what space you have to play with too as all cars are different. Sorry, no pics of my setup however something like this is probably what you should strive for: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/attachments/open-discuss… I couldn't get it as centered as that as my car has a sensor in the way but it's still pretty close.

Cigarette Lighter Splitters are fine for all this low current stuff, just messy.

        • +3

          @SteveAndBelle:
Dam good work Steve! Thanks for taking the time to outline that. I have never wanted a dashcam on prior deals but now I want 2…. (yes standard OzBargain quote but usually just from the price :-)
          Cheers mate.

        • @QLDtightarse: No problem at all and I hope it helps others. I just hope we never have to capture each other on our own cams :p

        • @SteveAndBelle: although I am amazed at the fact that you are hitched and have the time for such things!

        • @SteveAndBelle: Might be silly of me to ask but I assume this comes with a suction mount?

        • +2

@pikatech: Yep, they come standard with a Suction Mount. They're cheap but work well as long as you don't use them on the black shading dots printed up top of most modern windscreens. Mount them to a clean glass surface with a bit of moisture (spit) and they're actually very strong.

        • @SteveAndBelle: Ending up buying 3 for mine and the missus's car :) Even with the alternate more compact adhesive mount you recommended, you'd still mount beneath the dots to avoid radio interference?

        • +1

@plasmapuff: Nah, if using the stick-on mounts you can put them anywhere… BUT best to do a dry run by holding it up to the glass first just in case you experience issues with other gear in your car (very unlikely but worth spending a minute or two). Also good to hold it up just in case it fouls up the mirror or whatever too. Once you've stuck it on it's unlikely to stick as good if you have to pull it off and re-stick it somewhere different so 'measure twice, cut once' and you'll be right ;)

        • @SteveAndBelle: Thanks mate for all your help! :)

        • @plasmapuff: No probs… and don't forget to only buy the Samsung Evo MicroSD cards as per the link in the description OK. Seems as though most issues only occur when people use other cards so save yourself a lot of pain and just get the Samsungs. I just bought ten of them via that link as they're basically the same price as buying them direct from China (which is probably where these guys drop-ship from anyway).

        • +1

@SteveAndBelle: Thanks! Looking at this thread seems to indicate that several brands are compatible as long as its Class 10. Given that I have a few lying around at home, I'll give them a try first but will definitely keep them in mind cheers:)

All I did was get a fuse tap from Supercheap, a cigarette lighter 2 to 1 from Dick Smith, and my crimping tool.
Cut a female socket out from the splitter, crimped the fuse tap to the positive wire and grounded the other on the car's chassis. Ran my cable through the roofing, around the outside of the car and into the female cigarette socket that the fuse tap connects to the fusebox. Nondestructive to the USB car cable and completely reversible.

        • @plasmapuff: Here you go PlasmaPuff, some pics I've just taken: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211474?page=2#comment-3054…

        • +1

@tetsuma: Another great solution. So many ways to skin a cat! Yes, best to keep any installation nondestructive & reversible. Best to install it all so if push comes to shove you know you'll be able to rip it all out in a matter of minutes. Best example of needing to do this is when you've just discovered your car has been written off and you've only got a few hours to get to it and remove any special stuff you may need/want. Been there, done that in the parking lot of a Smash Repairers with only about 30 minutes to spare before the car got towed away to the auction house! The result of a 100% not-at-fault hit & run.

      • I can't seem to change the date format to DD-MM-YYYY. Has this happened to you?

        • No sorry. I just tested my originals and one of my new ones and it works fine. Get into the Date/Time menu, hit the 'REC' button several times to go through the settings then once you're at the bottom setting you should be able to press the up or down arrow to change the format.

        • +2

Actually, yes you're right, I understand what you mean now. You can change it in the menu but when you view the recorded video the format is still YYYY-MM-DD. An odd problem which may be fixed in a firmware update but not enough for me to worry about.

        • @SteveAndBelle: Ah damn, okay thanks for the prompt reply!

  • I got one of these off gearbest. IT looks exactly the same just with a different brand name ! Anyone know why ?

    • +8

Mass production minions in China :)

    • I've got two and working great. strange that there's no brand name for such a product with good reviews and reputation, they can build a good business from this.

  • Have you had to ever use the recorded footage for something?
I guess it's like insurance, not everyone will sue it, but when you do need to it's there.
Or if you record something interesting could upload to Youtube for giggles.

    • +3

I've saved a few recordings of people doing really stupid things but nothing meaningful as yet. It's only been a few months though.

      • Cool. What did they do?

        • +3

A very near miss by someone not concentrating, a dangerously close tailgater and the usual-for-my-area peak hour cyclist issues that will most probably result in more 'ghost' bikes being chained to light posts and traffic lights as reminders. Hrmm.

        • +2

If you nearly miss something, you've hit it.

        • +2

@luke73: Ha, true true! OK, a 'Close Call' then ;)

        • +2

@luke73: he said near miss, not nearly missed.

I put a clip up on YouTube. The company behind failarmy contacted me and paid me US$100 for the rights.

      • +3

Link to the original or the FailArmy clip?

        • +13

          JukinVideo version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wtrb4zQZTy0
          Original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElOh8cgInak

It also got posted to a facebook group. The amusing thing is that the guy whose car got hit was following that group - he posted a photo of his car after the crash. :)

        • @eug: Nice work EUG! Do you know if your footage helped the innocent party in any way? Do you know the outcome?

        • @eug:

          Bloody hell what a dick!!

        • +5

@SteveAndBelle: I gave my details to the 4WD driver. He contacted me a few days later saying the police would like to view it, so I sent it to him. Not sure what happened after that.

        • @slipperypete: The song suits the event too. Well not exactly, but close enough. :)

        • +2

The location is appropriate as well. Look at the building on the left.

        • @Dacs:

That collision sound would have been music to their ears ;-)

      • Cool - just up the road from me. Wouldn't be surprised if the BCC had video on that intersection.

      • +1

        ..bought one :)

  • +2

might be useful for recording litterbugs messing the roads while they drive, that really irks me.

  • +1

    Cheers OP.

Is the microSD that OP recommended overkill? I heard these cameras are fussy with cards.

What's the best card for cost/compatibility? is 32GB necessary?

  • Hmmm I'm interested in this but have no idea how much space each video recording takes up on the SD card. Anyone know how much space a 1 hour drive would take up? Thanks

    • +3

You can record several hours on a 16GB, but the cost of 32GB isn't much more these days. Strongly recommend the Samsung cards in these.

      • Yeah I just wanted to roughly know how much several hours translates to. I don't mind about the costs of the SD cards, but more so about my laziness in changing the SD cards once they get full haha :P

        • +1

These are setup to loop the recordings so no need to change cards at all. Once they fill the card up they automatically start over-writing the oldest files.

    • +1

I think 32GB allows for about 5 hours of recording time, so do the math from there.

    • +3

I have both of mine set to 1080p and recording in 3-minute grabs (the lowest setting). Each 3-minute file is just under 300Mb in size so 1 hour would create 6Gb worth of data.

    • +1

Before i used loop recording I would get 800mb-1gb for every hour on my 32GB SD. Can't remember if it was set to 720p@30fps or 720p@60fps though.

  • +2

I wonder how well they can handle Queensland's summer heat

    • Where in QLD? Outback where it gets to 48°C, probably isn't very different to Victoria on a hot day. Remember it is the internal car temperature that is important.

      • just Brisbane really. I will probably give this one a go

    • +3

Or the NT's all year heat… I think I'd soon have just a pile of melted plastic

      • No, but the capacitors might fail sooner if they aren't good quality ones.

    • +2

Mine has been fine in Brisbane for quite a while.

Hard to know years into it though.

      • +1

well it's just $49 so 1-2 years is already a good deal IMO

  • +1

From the item description FAQ 1, is the "15-30mins" an accurate time of how long it remembers settings? Had a quick scroll through previous G1W-C deals and didn't find anyone complaining of date/settings lose.

  • Looks like its limited to 1 per buyer ?? .. is that for all group deals?

  • +1

What's the battery life on this like? How long does it last if it's not plugged in to a power source?

    • +6

it has capacitors instead of a battery, lasts just long enough to save the current clip then shut down. lipo batteries sitting in the window is not a good idea

    • These ones have a capacitor, but even with the battery version (G1W-H) the battery is basically there to allow the camera to save the footage and shut down, probably last a few minutes - not long enough to use it for anything really out of the car.

  • The video output files must be in MOV format otherwise it's fake.

    • I'm quite curious about this statement. Can you elaborate?

      • +2

A fake will save video as .AVI, a real G1W/G1WH/CB will save as .MOV file.

        • +1

          Ahh, cheers!

        • -2

If it does its job why would you care?

        • @slackme: That's the problem. The fakes do not do their job. Just compare the quality from fake to real

  • I got one of these style cameras last deal, and it won't always record, sometimes I'll look at it and it's just not working. Also, it won't wipe over its oldest video, so I have to manually format it weekly.

I don't mean to put anyone off one, but if anyone could throw me some suggestions on how to fix it that would be great. It musnt like the memory card or something..

    • +1

Yeah, I thought I was in for similar reported dramas when I bought mine so I kept a keen eye on them for the first few weeks and still do spot checks just to make sure all is OK. I've had one of them reset its date however that was while I was screwing around with them during the initial install but apart form that they've been working perfectly and as described. Can't fault them at this stage.

    • 'these style cameras'? Quality varies massively between brands of dash cam. Most cams at this price are terrible, with the G1W's being an exception. That's why its so popular!

    • +2

Also, it won't wipe over its oldest video, so I have to manually format it weekly.

Check your G-Sensor setting, it automatically locks files (and hence doesn't overwrite them) when it detects a big enough bump. Just decrease the sensitivity, or turn it off altogether.

      • YES! I switched off the G-Sensor & Motion Sensor options completely after some strange issues during initial setup. They haven't missed a beat since.

        • The camera is identical to this one except for the front logo.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll change the setting this arvo and see how it goes

          EDIT: it's a g1w-c

        • +1

@bgktmxg: Please report back once done & tested.

    • Do you have loop video activated? Mine didn't record over the older videos until I put that on.

  • +3

How do you guys connect power to these (especially if you're using it for the rear) without wires hanging everywhere in the car?

    • +3

Run the wires under the trim at the top of your windscreen, down the side, behind the glovebox, to your cig lighter. It's quite easy, at least for the cars I've done it on - just poke the cables into the trim with something flat like an ice cream stick.

    • +1

The power cable dangling in the middle from the camera to the cig lighter in my car. Not an issue for me.

      • +1

The non-perfectionist side of me has to agree with you. Before I had all the parts to do my OTT neat & tidy install I was just running one on the windscreen with the supplied suction cup mount & Cigarette lighter adaptor and to be honest the cable dangling down really wasn't as much of an issue as I thought it would be. Thing is though I wanted to run the rear camera too so as I had to run cable for that it wasn't too much more difficult to do it all neatly anyway. Another bonus of the OTT install is the fact that I can now use the cigarette lighter socket for other stuff if/when required too. Absolutely each to their own. The dangling cable really isn't a big issue.

        • +1

Oh, I don't use the suction cup, I mounted it to the rear view mirror (bought it together with the dashcam back then).

I thought about asking my mechanic to wire it to the battery, but changed my mind after I tested it while driving. I also bought TomTom Universal High-Speed Multi-Charger from Ebay http://www.amazon.co.uk/TomTom-Universal-High-Speed-Multi-Ch… (link is from amazon UK) and now I can have my TomTom GPS running simultaneously with the dashcam (more ugly wires dangling in the middle tho).

If I am doing the rear cam as well, I would definitely put more effort into it too.

  • How have people installed these as rear facing?
