Glowforge 3D Laser Cutter/Engraver - Preorder at 50% off - $1995USD + $675USD Shipping

40

Not sure if this warrants a deal given the price is discounted from a price that the product has never been sold at, but from what I've researched this is way cheaper than anything else even close on the market.
It's offered at a considerable discount from the "retail price" if preordering. Them selling it at the retail price is not guaranteed though.

If you use the link you also get another $100USD off the price, plus I get a referral discount. http://glowforge.com/referred/?kid=a3s8Cj

    Shipping kills the deal

    • yep hurts it a bit, but if they had of hidden it in the price of the product at $2500, then $100 shipping, it would have looked better and still been a great deal.

  • did you buy one Jason (site says you did)

    • +1

Sure did! I can use in my business to make parts and products, so the price is insignificant compared to what it enables us to do.
Lets hope the shipping date is soon!

      • did you buy the basic one that you have to vent or the pro with upgraded laser and specs (but double the price)?

sounds a fantastic tool, wonder how thick it can really cut.

what type of things would you make?

        • +2

Just got the basic one. we have windows ;)
It can cut 6mm, and you can flip the material to allow for a total of 12mm.
We make circus gear and other fun things. www.threeworlds.com.au
I just got quotes for a moulded silicone part, that the mould alone costs $1100usd which we wouldn't need and the per piece price would be reduced with this and the product would be better!
Plus the creative abilities are super exciting!! :)

        • @jason3w:
I know your shop at burleigh. Been in it many times (I live at s'port) and wife has bought a few gifts there.

I think the unit would be cool, to expensive for me as a toy but if you havea business need then excellent.

          @jason3w:
put some posts on your blog about what you have made etc, would be good (maybe not good but interesting) reading.

  • Very nice product I just saw the trailer. But the delivery price is unheard off. I have seen flight deals to the states round trip for less than that :)

    • +1

so true. could fly over and pickup for less! Still the total price is still great, and the tech looks very appealing.

      • Where are these readily available $575 (shipping still $99 in the US) return tickets to the US?

Import duties should also be factored into the price. GST at a minimum.

  • Local warranty?

    • still waiting to hear back. can cancel my order at any time up until it's shipped. see what they have to say.

  • +2

It's 99 usd shipped within the united states. You'd be better off getting a reshipping service for the price difference. Plus it's likely to attract import duties.

    • Didn't think of import duties. Flying over is sounding more attractive by the minute! Might look into the reshipping thing. Could save a few hundred dollars hey.

      • As the product us coming from tye US Import duties likely to be only 10%gst, which you can claim back on your BAS

        • true.

      • Please update here what you find out re shipping / warranty. Given the volume of the package I would think it's gonna be expensive not matter how it is shipped. This thing intrigues me .. keep looking at Kickstarters that have done this sort of thing (- but risk vs reward you know).

        • yeah seems like a more developed business than most of the kickstarter startups with no experience. i've read some reviews of the CEO and he sounds solid. so that's encouraging.
i think really the only really way to mitigate the shipping cost is to incorp a holiday in the US and pick it up.
I really do miss the 1 to 1 usd to aud days!!

  • I'll pass, but I'm already planning what I'll get engraved when every Officeworks has one of these and you can engrave something with the accuracy of a printer for a few dollars…

    • +3

message me in a few months and i've engrave your gear ;)

  • Looks incredible!

    Laser Cutter/Engraver

Sorry, but I can't help but read that as Death Ray! ;)

  • Pretty impressive, especially with the on board cameras to detect the materials. I have a laser cutter which has a 700 x 500mm cutting area and believe it or not that's pretty limiting as to what can be done. Have a think about that because when I first purchased my machine I thought it was plenty but pretty quick you realise how limited you can be.

    • how much did you pay, and does this look like a revolution to an owner of a lazer? the pro has continual feed, but for the main product we want to make it's actually only 475mm x 100mm so could do a pair each load.

    • i did see some on ebay, but this just looks so user friendly.

      • +2

I purchased mine from a seller on eBay. I paid $2950 with a true 60w tube.(I guess that was luck as most come with 60w labelled and are more like 50w power) Can do up to 10mm acrylic but that's cutting at a snail pace. Mine is also continuous length but that's just marketing talk in my opinion. It would be extremely difficult to line up the work piece if you were to do a continuous cut. Chinese machine so as expected needed a going over and a few fine adjustments but now it cuts like a champion. Has a motorised bed so can engrave on pieces up to 200mm thick. I also put an aquarium chiller on it to keep the water really cool in order for the laser to run efficiently. Picked it up off gumtree for $100. World of difference. Machine came with air pumps, ventilation fans and software. I just design everything in Adobe illustrator and export it directly to the machine. You mentioned it can do 12mm by flipping the piece also. That would mean you'd have to mirror cut on the other side and again lining it up with the tolerance of a hairline to get a perfect straight edge is near impossible. I'd say this is more for the a person who wants a car that can drive itself and has no ability whatsoever. Great concept but a glorified toy rather than a commercial machine that's going to make you money and increase production.

        • yep looked at those ones on ebay. we are cutting and engraving 1mm silicone and rubber sheet so i'm guessing either would be fine. this just looks a lot cleaner and easy to use. thinking this coupled with our 3D printer will make for a very fun PD workshop.
thanks for the great reply, it's good to hear from someone that has a working machine.

        • @jason3w:
Just be careful with what type of rubbers you cut. Any rubbers which release chlorine fumes would ruin your optics and corrode your machine fairly quickly. Things like ABS also release cyanide and foam is the number 1 cause of laser fires. Just be certain that what you want to cut is suitable for laser cutting. Even though the laser will cut it, sure doesn't mean you should. Maybe do a little research on it all. There are things that I'd love to be able to put through the laser (pvc and polycarb) because it's just quick and convenient but because of the dangers involved on ruining equipment and your health I'm forced to cut it on my cnc machine. Have you had a look into a small cnc machine also?

    • outstanding special effects!

OK, I bit the bullet! Used your referral link, OP.

Someone use my referral link, please! :-) http://glowforge.com/referred/?kid=Sw5n1C

    • pretty awesome. hope they get them out soonish. normally these preordered items tend to drag out a bit beyond the expected dates, but this company does seem pretty solid. thanks for using the referral link. I think we can get up to $1000 off if enough people buy as a result of the referral which would be great.
      win win.

      • Looks like they have sold some 2000 - 2500 units so far, wonder what there monthly production rate will be. If i hadn't just started the process of buying my first house my deposit would be less right now.
