Is it illegal? It is through ebay, and you are allowed to change your selling price anytime.

      • +1

Yes it is 100% illegal to raise a price then claim "30% off" while selling at our close to the original price. Because it is deceptive behaviour.
        https://www.accc.gov.au/publications/advertising-selling/adv…

        • The question is, did the price go up because a special just ended? If they normally list the item for the full price, then it's 100% legal.

Unfortunately without a service like camelcamelcamel for ebay, it's hard to keep track of price changes like that.

        • I was saying I'm not sure if that would apply to an ebay store.

        • @ozhunter: This isn't any random seller. It's an official store on eBay and the discount code is advertised prominently on the front page of eBay.

        • But Dick Smith are selling the products at the higher price.

eBay, not Dick Smith, are offering 30% off only if you enter the coupon code at checkout.

        • @Thrift: ebay are offering 15%, DSE are offering the 30% off. DSE have probably done a deal where they are splitting the discount with ebay. That is, after the prices all going up, nothing has changed, and neither party really loses anything.

  • Poor poor poor DICKS
    Price fluctuation isn't good

  • +3

Isn't this price manipulation against Australian consumer law?

  • +1

was going to buy a harmony 350 for $26 but its now $44, so i just purchased a harmony 650 from a different seller for only $10 more…
    their loss really.

  • +2

On why the negs are so low on a deal. You can +ve a deal without posting a comment but while putting a -ve, you get this :

You must have at least one published comment on the deal before you can cast negative votes. See this forum post for details

Even if this site suffers from some referral money and traffic, for the good we should just ban DickSmith (DSE) for 12 Months with a public posting on front page.

  • +2

heaps of items with 0 stock on eBay but plenty of stock on dick website

  • +4

The price on their website is cheaper than their ebay store.

  • Absolutely irrevocably down voting this dickspicable act!

  • +3

    http://offer.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBidsLogin&item…

Price almost doubles within 2 days of release of code… yeah never going to shop at Dick's again unless I have no choice. Poor form mate.

    • +2

Did you miss the fourth line that shows it was also $49.98 that price in August?
Not many people would have bought it at full price either, so it could have been at that price for a while.

      • +2

3 purchases at $~27 in June and I also looked back in Ozbargain deals to find that around that time in August there was a 20% off deal on Dicksmith eBay.

        Like I said, poor form.

        • What we really need is camelcamelcamel for ebay. I would think if it was always sold at $27, they would have at least sold one in the whole of July, more than one in August, and at least one in the whole of September before this sale. Everyone else seems to sell it at $49 so $27 would be a bargain.

        • +1

@eug: just look at the completed listings. Or better yet the sold listings before buying a product on ebay. It will give you a good idea on whether the item price is good or not.

In the left column, scroll down til you see 'show only' and tick the boxes you want to see.

        • @lightningben: It's nothing like camelcamelcamel as it only goes back a few months.

Picked up a go pro 4 silver for $377. Pretty good price

    Thanks for contacting us.

    lol so lame

    • sending them any kind of message is a hot waste of time.

      • didn't take long.. if more people complain then at least they know their customers are pissed off

I just picked up a Toshiba 1TB external hard drive for $62.30 - sounds like a good deal to me. I'm happy :)

    Let's see when I get it……

  • +2

iPads, flagship phones all removed from DS ebay store.

Items under "Mobile" category mainly cases and other accessories.

30% off every sounds good but not that good.

  • Still good deal on 49" FHD TV, LG 49LF6300, $979.3 minus 2.5% cashback,

  • +3

Eh, think I'll leave this one neutral

Shitty business practice from Dick but there are a few solid prices on TVs and cameras

  • +6

Actually managed to get what I'd consider a good deal. Been after a racing wheel for PC/PS3 and future proof for PS4 (potentially). Logitech has just brought out the G29, a refreshed version of the hugely successful G27 (No, they may not be as fully featured or have the extra toys and specs of Thrustmaster etc), but in value for money terms they're pretty much unbeatable. Generally retail for $399-$449 (DS @ $399) with code = $279.40 + free click and collect with local stock… WIN! Next cheapest price is a grey import from freeshippingtech @ $330…

    • -1

They sucked you in. You really should have looked harder, maybe rang a couple of stores, or even searched the history here on Ozbargain. DSE have done it a lot cheaper than that before($199 from memory). The Logitechshop's normal price since the end of August has been $275 with free postage.

With it probably being End of Life, the discounts were bound to come.
eg 6/10/15 posted here on OZbargain from pccasegear for $229.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/214221

Be wary of the Bent Dick

      • What use are prices from months ago if nobody can get them now?

        • That makes no sense, prices from months ago are useful to see who was selling the product so u could try for them to check the price. How do you know you can't get that price anymore? Regardless, the only mention of a non current price was the $199 from DSE. Logitechshop price is current, they have just sold out and you could probably backorder. But why would you bother when PCCasegear have it now for $229.

        • +1

          @Major Mess:

How do you know you can't get that price anymore?

How do you know that price will come back? Should you just keep waiting until the price hopefully comes again?
This has been discussed on OzB several times before when people mention old prices when the AUD was stronger.

Another example would be the Dyson v6 which was available for an amazing $320 during the last sale. That was a fantastic price as the regular price is $489, but nobody can get it at that price now. If a store sold it today for $369 which is still a really good price, would that be a good deal or not?

But why would you bother when PCCasegear have it now for $229.

          Ahh, the benefit of hindsight!

        • +1

@eug: Price trackers are useful but you also have to consider other factors that have a lot of bearing on price like the value of the AUD.

A case in point, I was going to pull the trigger on a TV when the Wolf Blass promotion was on but everyone said the prices will come down to what Wolf Blass was offering them for as the TV was an older model. So I waited as it had an added advantage of not having to buy and therefore consume numerous bottles of wine.

Well, the AUD tanked, the previous low price that TV went to was $450, it never went below that and was cleared out at that price if not higher. The new models came in and are sitting comfortably at an RRP of more than a $1100.

      • It wasn't end of life… If you read what I put, I got the G29, a brand new product… Hence my reason for the post… If I wanted a 'cheap' G27 I'd have gone second hand…

  • -1

Typical, all products out of stock or up the price

I would like to buy a HP Spectre X360 for my son and see Dick Smith still appear to have this one….

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Spectre-x360-13-4007TU-/272000…

Admittedly they have re-inflated it to $1,699 but if I take 30% off I presumably get it for $1,189.30.

I had previously been watching this one on Ebay from directdeals_au for $1,383.00

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Spectre-13-x360-8GB-256GB-SSD-…

I do note though that the Dick Smith model is 13-4007TU whilst the deals direct one is 13-4000 - Specs looks the same unless I am missing anything? Can anyone explain the difference and whether the Dick Smith one is worth buying in their opinion?

    • +3

Same thing, 13-4000 is the general model number for the range of Spectre X360 13". (So 13-4007TU is one of 13-4000)

  • -6

30% off 250% prices no thanks.

  • +5

Picked up a SAMSUNG 60" (159cm) Full HD Smart 100Hz TV UA60J6200 for $1450. Was going to get it yesterday when they had 15% plus 30% off but noticed today it is 20% then 30% off, so saved another $100. Very happy with that.

  • +1

I bought a Belkin Micro USB dock that was showing in stock all over Qld only to get a call yesterday from a guy telling me that it's not in stock and they'll be refunding me. It's still showing in stock on their website and on eBay. A classic Dick move. The guy that called didn't give a damn.

    • +1

Same thing happened to me, different product though

      • Same with something else I otedered earlier, forced him to check every else in birssy and picked it up in the end.

  • Another misleading Dick sale. I'll be avoiding.

  • +5

Is what they're doing illegal? For example, they are obviously selecting stock to go on the 30% discount sale. There is no way suddenly overnight majority of the hot items such as phones and game consoles will sell overnight unless they put up 1 for sale……

The only thing I purchased was the Beats Studio Wireless for $285, RRP is $489 but they have it listed as $407. So 285 is a steal for those headphones. I've been wanting them for a while now and everywhere sells them for $400+

    • +2

And tomorrow the eBay store will most likely be magically restocked.

    • +1

Any beats headphones are certainly a steal lol

      • Steal as in ripping off customers or steal as in it's really cheap when this sale was on? lol

        • Well I meant Beats are never bang for your buck headphones but you can also interpret the comment as Beats are stealing from you because they are selling overpriced hardware. Don't get me wrong, it's just my opinion lol

        • @watty:

Oh… I agree, Beats are overpriced and overhyped. But the Beats Studio 2.0 wireless or wired got awesome reviews from professionals and consumers. But I would never pay over 300 for them. @285 man that's a great price!

I, unfortunately got sucked into the brand hype. :( But I got to admit, best headphones yet. My mate has the solo2 wireless and studio shits all over them

        • @hasher22: Don't worry mate, I'm a apple fanboi so we all have our thing xD

  • Hi guys did you check your Paypal account to see if the discount had been applied? Because mines didn't work, I used the eBay app on my phone to make the purchase.

    • +1

Logon to the Paypal website and check the transaction details.

      • Thanks it shows discount been applied, phew…

  • +4

Paid for cordless handset to pick up from local dick, and as I expected got call from store telling me they have no stock. Refunded!
Though this isnt the first time they done this dodgy thing, so I headed in store to check and found heaps of boxes stacked under display. This is third instance that they refused my online order with special code
NEVER EVER AGAIN, YOU F***ING DICK!

    • Have had this happen to me too… leaves a bitter taste in your mouth doesn't it?

    • Make a formal complaint with them/head office.

    • +1

Perhaps try complaining to ebay. given its an ebay promotion, they may have a bit of push to stop this behaviour as well. Plus they should be able to see the stats of how many people this is happening to.

    • -1

I started a forum thread on dick smith a year or two ago about this and tons of people thought I was being unfair

      • +2

Tons of people voted + on all the individual deals, so that's no surprise. I'm quite sure plenty of people managed to score really good deals during this sale, they just don't start creating posts to say that there was no problem and they're totally happy. Over a thousand gopro silvers have been sold and they still have stock.

Those who missed out due to DSE's poor stock system would understandably complain, so it'll just look like everybody is complaining. Confirmation bias will play a part too.

The DSE guy I spoke to when picking up my Tab S2 said the department that assigns internet orders to stores sometimes oversells stock, resulting in people missing out. They were annoyed at it too. That definitely needs some work.

        • I agree, people have a lot to complain about DS all the time, but let's not forget atleast they run a good many more deals than JB or Officeworks for that matter & the 2 times I have asked JB to price match them (just because I had a couple of JB gift cards to use up) they said it was below cost…….whatever that term has come to mean these days.

Sure DS has inventory problems probably because of too many sales going in, but they are the ones who at least have an amazing amount of good sales and as with anything on OzB, the early bird wins the worm.

        • +1

@jdf: Interestingly, when DSE lowers prices during a sale (like the Kindle and GoPro Session), the loudest voices keep quiet. :)

  • The sale has been extended to the 5th. More time to grab those really cheap gopros!

  • +1

Should be called "ADD 40 TAKE OFF 30"

  • I've ordered a seagate 2TB HDD, received a call from the local store, saying they would refund me as they have NO STOCK.

Tried to call their support line to negotiate a way out, been put on hold for 30mins…I hang up and sent them a message through eBay.

Hope they will at least reply the message….

    Disappointed…

If there is stock in local store, can we just walk in and force the pick up?

    • Usually the stores gets the online orders through pretty soon after you order (they may not have processed it it or set aside the stock) but they can just give you your order and that way you can have the item before head office decides to cancel it.

    • Just want to share with my fellow ozbargainer….

received the following 'response' from DS

dicksmithonline is out of the office until 10/02/2015 and may not be able to respond to your message.

  • Sorry but need to neg for their sucking return policy and customer service. Staffs are trained to reject any claim

    • What was the reason for the return?

  • Fitbit CHARGE HR Small BLACK down to $111 with C&C - pretty good deal (normally $179)

  • For those that bought the Asus UX501JW notebook, does yours come with a back lit keyboard?

  • LOL even when there is stock, you go right to the end after paying with paypal, it gives a no stock in this location, and suddenly no other location has it.

    • I'm getting the same error, Albury store (2640) is showing stock of the GoPro Silver, attempt to buy and select click and collect with Albury and showing stock, get to Paypal, submit payment and it says no stock. Using another browser I noticed that when you add it in ebay it goes to no stock for about 4 minutes. I waited in Paypal until it showed stock again in the another browser but then Paypal gave me 'listing has been updated' message, so I haven't been able to find a way around it.

      • same issue - wanting to buy TV - whats up with that?

        • update - working today! TV i wanted to buy finally went through the checkout. already got an sms for collection

  • Here is a link to a functioning page. The main page seems to go in a dead loop of non-functional listings.

  • is the gopro hero 4 session a good buy at $321? Pity I can't combine it with the $50 ebay voucher….

    • +1

I think it's a fantastic price, but just check reviews on youtube and make sure the video quality will satisfy your needs.

  • That awkward moment when the Beats Studio Wireless was selling at $407, $285 after discount….. now they bumped up the price to retail $479! Dodgy DS, Dodgy and sneaky as foook

They did this for a lot of items too…

  • Ordered last night thought they would have had it ready for collection today but nope. Showed as in stock so I would have thought 2 hours from opening max for them to pick it off the shelf and set it aside for eBay C&C orders..

  • I haven't verified a card with sufficient funds to purchase. I am a bit scared it will commit to buy at a higher price…

  • Does dicksmith send you an invoice online or with the order?

    • You get a receipt with the order & a copy emailed to you.

      • for some reason i didnt get any email :/ and the ebay receipt isn't a tax invoice :/

  • I'm filing a complaint to the ACCC for bait advertising. I have tried to negotiate with them and they literally asked me to file the complaint, and are "awaiting communication from the ACCC"…. Is it really so hard to take my money for a product you're advertising?

What really gets my goat, is the fact that the Note 5 was the FIRST item on their ad banner, and yet it was sold out 1 day into the sale… AND they have stock in their online store!!! doesn't make any sense at all.

  • Got my laptop today, shipped on the 6th from Syd to Mel. Best price ever + reasonable shipping, not sure why so many people are upset as Dick has never let me down once.

    • -2

      You soon know why

      • -1

Awww how 'soon' do I have to wait? I've been waiting for 5 years here.

    • Its been more than 12 days and I am still waiting for mine. No communication either.

      • I haven't received my go pro yet, I received a head mount though zzz
