The 3-way arm is pretty handy, have a look at that one. You can use as a extension stick, tripod and handle.

        • @itsak: The GoPole…..don't look at me, I didn't name it :)

  • I am looking for something like toshiba radius fhd i5 or i7 8 gb ram.

What's the point of a 30% off sale when most things are out of stock, or been increased significantly over and above the 15% deal?

    • +5

Isn't that the motto of any DSE sale?

    • +9

Surprised this deal actually got this many votes… (no offence to the op, I have a bone to pick with dse).

      • +6

Is it really that wrong to put your prices back to regular or rrp before a sale?

You can't expect them to make a loss if they give a discount on an already discounted item. That would be great - but it's a business, not a charity for OzBargainers.

Sucks you can't get a phone or what not. It's shifty that it's all out of stock. But they won't be making a loss. They would go broke.

        • +11

Yes it is wrong, it's like saying you will have a sale just to pull up all the prices making no difference. When they offered this sale/promo/whatever they have to "make sure the goods or services are available in reasonable quantities for a reasonable period eg. if supply is limited, say so - 'x amount or limited quantities only' in which they have failed to do so:
          http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/Consumers/Advertising_…

You are the only person implying ozbargainers expect charity and we do not at all. Be careful with your wording… There is a difference between dse offering a genuine deal (not saying it is good or bad - that's a different story) and wasting our time using legally questionable antics.

        • +5

Is it really that wrong to put your prices back to regular or rrp before a sale?

It is very wrong!! I'm surprised you're even asking that question!

If a business can't afford to discount by the amount they're advertising, then they shouldn't advertise it!

Imagine Myer advertising 50% off everything to entice lots of people to come in and then it's found that they have doubled the prices of everything. So after being given 50% off, you're paying their normal prices.

        • +2

          @watty:

Fair enough. I still think it is full of bargains regardless of no stock for a number of items.

IF they didn't raise their prices higher than rrp then you should be complaint free.

If the prices are higher than without a discount / than normal then yes complain.

I just don't think people should complain if they can't buy stock below cost. I also don't think dse should promote 30% off prices when they are making it difficult to get a real bargain rather than a fake one.

When you go to a Myer sale, is everything on offer a good deal?

Or are just some things a good deal while others are cheaper elsewhere?

        • +1

Not everything on sale at Myer is a good deal and things can still be cheaper elsewhere.

BUT… at Myer sales, we have a fair idea what to expect. They don't blatantly mislead their customers with false advertising.

Customers expect that the the "discount" is off the price that the shop normally sells it for.

        • @hv:

Customers expect that the the "discount" is off the price that the shop normally sells it for.

Have you actually confirmed if Myer never raises their prices for every item they sell - including promotional prices - before a sale?

        • +4

          @eug:

Obviously, I don't have absolute proof unless I keep a running database of all their inventory, stock and prices.

But from the large number of purchases I've made during their promotional periods - yes.

Where I've seen items at a certain price during a non-promo period, I can be very confident that any discount that they offer is off that price.

They also have price tags stuck on each item with their "every day" price and the discount is generally made at the register rather than at the shelf.

If my previous purchases alone don't give an indication of how the Myer sales work, I think the lack of complaints on this forum about Myer promos (vs these DSE ones) should give you a pretty good idea.

        • @hv:

I think the lack of complaints on this forum about Myer promos (vs these DSE ones) should give you a pretty good idea.

Is it because it's a lot harder to keep track of Myer in-store prices?

Is it because people on an internet forum are probably more inclined to watch prices of items sold by a tech store, rather than a department store?

Is it because people don't keep watching prices of towels or cutlery sets after they buy them?

        • @eug:

Have you ever heard of or seen Myer's Online store?

Is it because people on an internet forum are probably more inclined to watch prices of items sold by a tech store, rather than a department store?

Are you speaking for yourself or are you speaking for everyone online? If what you're saying is even remotely correct, we'd only have tech-related posts on this forum!

Is it because people don't keep watching prices of towels or cutlery sets after they buy them?

Who says? Is this another one of your assumptions?
You should hear the wives/ladies in the office talk about bedsheets and pillow cases… not everyone is only interested in tech products.

Have you ever heard of or seen Myer's Online store?

Where is the revision history and previous-purchased-prices link on their online store?
You are aware that feature exists on eBay, right?

Are you speaking for yourself or are you speaking for everyone online?

The same as you are doing.

If what you're saying is even remotely correct, we'd only have tech-related posts on this forum!

Isn't it a bit ironic that you're posting that in a deal by an electronics store?

Who says? Is this another one of your assumptions?

          Those were questions.

You should hear the wives/ladies in the office talk about bedsheets and pillow cases… not everyone is only interested in tech products.

How many of them post complaints about Myer/DJ/etc on forums?

The fact that we're posting on an internet forum means we're more tech savvy that the vast majority of people. This is also a bargains forum, so naturally people who post here watch prices more than the average shopper on the street.

Are you confident in saying that Myer never does what DSE is doing? i.e. raise prices back to normal (i.e. non-promo prices) before a big sale?

My point is that generally with any sale, not everything will be a bargain. I think it's normal practice to offer a discount off RRP as well, rather than a discount off an already discounted price.

For me, if it's cheaper than everyone else, it's a bargain - even if they raised the price a bit before that. What I care about is the final price that I'm paying. Of course I'd love to double-dip discounts like everyone else, but I'm realistic.

        • @eug:

It's seems useless trying to argue about the points in a forum given that there's no solid proof of anything and we'll just go around in circles.

For the record, I work in the tech division of a large bank.. so if anything, they're very tech-savvy.

I agree that not everything will be a bargain during a sale and my issue isn't that. My problem is the fact that their method of advertising is misleading to customers.

There are specific rules to the way the advertising should work.

          https://www.accc.gov.au/business/pricing/displaying-prices

Refer to the heading "Two-Price comparison advertising" and in particular, the following paragraph:

Statements such as 'Was $150/Now $100' or '$150 Now $100' are likely to be misleading if products have not been sold at the specified 'before' or 'strike through' prices in a reasonable period immediately before the sale commences.

        • @hv:

It's seems useless trying to argue about the points in a forum given that there's no solid proof of anything and we'll just go around in circles.

That's for sure. So many people throw out blanket accusations without proof when they can't find a bargain for themselves, ignoring all the actual deals that have been posted.

Refer to the heading "Two-Price comparison advertising" and in particular, the following paragraph:

The problem here is people are pissed off because they're not double-discounting.

e.g. in this comment the poster says the dock went up from $28 to $50 just in time for the sale.

If you check the purchase history, you can see that it has sold for $50 back in August, so what they're doing is legit.

Of course that isn't necessarily the case for all items, and purchase history only goes back a few months.

Sales tactics like this isn't unusual. It just so happens that it's easier to watch prices on ebay, and it's easy to complain on a forum that one is already on. I've been to physical stores where the sale is "x% off original price", and I'm sure many people here have too.

    • +5

$199 and 30% off + 2.5% off Cashrewards = $134 before postage, that is lowest price I've ever seen, if stock is available. What are you complaining? :)

      • +6

Yes I know what you are saying.. Discount is better than no discount but this is unethical behaviour by making their discount bigger than what it is and marking lots of items as out of stock. I won't be supporting them.

  • +2

What the….. Dick Smith no longer sell TVs larger than 60"?

ok so this is the new trend of retailers in australia in 2015. give big discount but jack up the prices and make lots item out of stock.

    • +11

Then complain and want GST added to all overseas transactions where we actually get genuine bargains.

  • +8

Funny how everything is suddently out of stock and if they are in stock their prices are pushed up beyond RRP. I am about to cast your first negative vote on OzBargain.

Tried casting a negative vote, but i have to "post" a comment before I can, so this is my comment.

What's the point of having a big eBay discount code but having everything out of stock on ebay, meanwhile having things in stock on their own website but not being allowed to use the code there? This is bait and switch.

    • -2

      err..neg for?

    • +1

Of course the Acer… it's got 8GB of ram and dedi graphics chip.

      • +3

Be wary of the Acer. I have a V5, similar specs, has been in for repair 3 times in 18 months. And judging by how it's been returned, they really throw them around.

        • I've got the S7 that's been quite good… I haven't dealt with their repair centre but I honestly don't think Toshiba and Asus are much better, no one cares about Australia after all.

        • @clse945111: Sure, totally agree. Though I'm not sure pitting the build of the low-midrange V3 against their flagship S7 is much of a comparison.

      • Unfortantely the Acer is OOS around me..it'll be either the Toshiba or Asus..similiar specs

      • Or this?

        Dell
Just a bit more expensive after 15%

  • +21

Looks like I'm "out of stock" on positive votes… This will have to do.

  • +1

Just picked up the ASUS Zenbook Pro for just a touch over $1300. Not a bad deal.

    • Hate the glare on the new laptops!

      • Is it that bad? I saw the specs on the Zenbook Pro and couldn't resist.

        • Personally I don't like glossy screens because they strain my eyes. I have one of the earlier models of the Zenbook and the screen is matte. Otherwise in terms of specs, the Zenbook Pro is really good.

  • +14

Lol, honestly, many people here are purist and it is sort of contradicting with the fact we are bargain hunters. What is the most important value that we all hold very highly? CHEAPEST PRICE.

It shouldn't really matter how it is achieved. Some in-stock items are lowest ever price, and lower than previous price + 15% eBay deal.

Previous price whatever it is, is discounted price, so if DSE wants to apply higher discount, it is only normal if the price should return to RRP, but ultimately after the 30% discount, it should be lower than previous discounted price, if it is not, then it is not a bargain, don't buy, simple.

    • +15

The problem is that it's being promoted as a 30% off sale, where it is really more of a 5% off sale. Dick Smith is infamous for this, and the shouldn't be praised for it.

      • +7

You must be trying really hard to ignore the genuine deals being posted.
Sure not everything is 30% off, but there are a number of items that genuinely are cheaper. You're only concentrating on the negative.
