  • Be warned re. Toshiba 2TB Canvio Basic USB 3.0 Portable HD as had one fail on me after 5 months (click of death)

    • +2

That one should be reliable and you can get an exchange anyway?

    • Thanks for the warning! What brands have you had success with?

      • +4

It doesn't really matter what brand you get there are always duds, I've has a Western digital go bust after a yr but a new one has been going for 3, seagates go sometimes too

        • +1

Absolutely! Also some people do abuse their drives. Whilst there are G-sensors built in to park the heads in the event of a fall, it still does cause some damage. Don't be turned off a brand just because someone out there had 1 fail.

These days the quality ain't much like the deathstars.

        • @zeomega:

May be my luck but no way abuse. Very seldom use (intermittent) never constant connected. Never dropped. Guess bad batch? Anyhow my personal experience I am sticking with WD.

      • [@Cronut]
Nearly all my seagates have failed (clicks) & overheat.
I have had best luck with Western Digital drives.
No luck with Samsung drives either.

      • +1

I always bought WD because they always had the best reviews… But I reckon 1 in 5 failed at some point in the future.

The last 5 i've bought have been seagate, and they're awesome. Stable, fast, and no fails yet.

Actually just picked up another 2TB portable from this Dick Smith sale for $104 click n collect. Going to plug it into my Xbox One.

    • One isn't exactly a huge sample size…

  • +1

I think that R103 notebook is actually touchscreen (or so it says). May be worth mentioning.
In spite of the fact that Dick Smith is being tricky, there are actually some great deals to be had. Think of it as an Easter Egg hunt with eggs which are hidden and in a state of quantum flux: they can disappear on you, or exist in two places (their webstore and eBay, competing for stock).

    • +1

Yep I'm the hunter, but the hunter's finds go out of stock quickly lol :)

  • I cannot find a single piece of info on the Asus 10.1" R103… even on the ASUS website. The full part number would help but no way to find it on the Dick website. Have enough laptops but I wouldn't mind a fifth one.

    • +2

      its under the product
      •AMD A4 Processor (1.0 GHz)
      •10.1" LED Back-lit HD 1366x768 16:9 Touchscreen
      •4GB RAM
      •500GB HDD
      •Touchscreen
•Includes Office Home and Student 2013

      • +1

It is just that according to other sellers of this product (http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Asus++R103&…) there is no mention of Office, so I am assuming that it must be a bonus? (or mistake?)

        • Don't ever trust the DSE website for computer specs. I bought a laptop from them a few months ago, I selected an Asus one that had inbuilt bluetooth according to the DSE website. Bought it, couldn't get the BT to work, checked the Asus website for specs, and guess what? Asus don't claim it has BT, only the DSE website does. I wanted BT so I could use a cordless mouse without having a receiver protruding from the side of the case.

While your laptop might have office installed, check it out thoroughly before you buy. Although my laptop wasn't advertised as having office, I found that it came with "office" installed too - but it's not what you think. It's a "send us money and we'll enable it" version of office. Your one could be different, or it could just be DSE not fact-checking their wild claims.

    • Looks like the R103 is sold as the X102BA overseas, might pick one up for uni.
      https://www.asus.com/au/Notebooks/X102BA/

      • Thanks for finding that out - yes there are no reviews under R103. However also if you look at the reviews for the X102BA, they seem abysmal too - it seems the processing power isn't up to scratch - planning to give my niece one as she's just starting UNI… not too sure now if I'll go with this or spend a little more for something with power - the Office Home and Student does make it tempting too though

        • +1

I wouldn't they're pretty terrible. Get something used for the same money, i'll perform a hell of a lot better. You can use Office Online for free anyway.

  • IS the samsung good value? After research Bing lee can do it for 1600, so theres a $200 saving right there. Just not sure if there are others out there. Im due for an upgrade soon.

        Thanks for the info.

Considering it's around half the price they have I would give it an extra 20% lol

Do you mean the one in post and the one in your link? if so Yes

Bought this TV from goodguys a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately paid a couple hundred more than this.

TV is great. Adjusted colours roughly in line with what reviews say and they look great. 4k content is impressive, 1080p, 720p content all looks fantastic and SD is average but I find it depends on the channel or even program as some look great while some look washed out and a bit blurry. But for me SD content is not the priority.

I've been using the TV with Optus FetchTV, Netflix, Wii U, Chromecast and HTPC for movies/gaming. So mostly 1080p content.

Coming from a 2010 50" Samsung 7 Series Plasma the blacks and colours probably aren't quite as good, but Plasma always had a good rep for that. And the Plasma had an annoying mark on it from where the wife tried to clean it, so that was my excuse for a new TV.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase.

      • Sounds like my wife needs to clean my 'similar vintage' Panasonic Plasma (TH-P42G10A)

  • Is the 10.1" notebook good value? cant find much info about it

    Toshiba 2tb sold out

  • This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available. they ended the speakers. lol

  • Apparently the UA55JU6400 has HDMI v2.0
    tempting.

  • When and where you enter code for these deals

    • +2

Just before you choose how you want to pay on Ebay, half way down the page will show a text box to enter the coupon code.

  • +5

For those still interested in a 2TB Portable HDD, I just ordered the following which worked with the Code.

Seagate Backup Plus 2TB Portable Hard Drive - Red
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251777124818
Works out to $112.25 shipped. Or less $7.95 for Click and Connect.

    • Is this drive suitable for Xbox One??

      Cheers!

      • Id go for a Expansion drive not a backup drive as your paying for software you wont use

PS I am running a Seagate expansion fine on my Xbox one

        • Cheers.
          :)

        • +1

          @Maz78: Don't forget you want USB 3 :)

    • +3

Also in blue, silver, and black. All $112.25 shipped, or $104.30 for Click and Connect Collect. ;)

  • is the nexus player worth getting?

    • +2

Well it's 100x better than my Apple TV 3rd gen. Kodi literally plays everything and I can still use Netflix, Hulu and well everything a Chromecast can

    • Cheapest price yet, I think. Just waiting to see what they announce with the new Chromecast in the morning..

      • I'm right there with you

  • I would have love to get my hands on the Toshiba 2TB but I was too slow, did not check OZB for the past 3 hours or so.

  • Thanks I got a 23" Phillips Monitor for $135.80.

  • I think this is worth a link too

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SEAGATE-Expansion-Desktop-3-5-4TB…

    SEagate 4tb ~$155

  • Z623 will be a bit complicated to price match with Office Works. What do you guys reckon?

  • cant log into paypal to pay this deal!!!

    • I had the same problem. Called up paypal and they sorted it out.

  • I got this error when changing postage and payment to Pick up from Store
"Operation timed out, please try again in a few minutes."

Anyone got the same problem? Dick smith pick up /stock check very poorly maintaned

    • I went to Office Works just now ask for the price beat for DickSmith 30% off ebay price and they reject me straight away with their shity frown face even though I was being extra polite and nice (smiling). They said that they won't price beat ebay and not the small seller.

I said it's Dick Smith not the friggin fake-seller who got 1 feedback. Also politely ask him whether they price match with BingLee (I didn't say that Bing Lee have special price) and reject me straight away again, telling me that the their stock is from taiwanm, china yadayadayada etc etc… I just laugh really hard inside myself…. He reckon that there is a Logitech Z623 stock that was made in germany & there is more faulty stock in chinese product. Ignorant customer service.

Then I reckon that I should fight my way by asking the OW store manager but bugger them, not worth my time for argument /debate & anger. Better buy from the Dicksmith who put effort to change the price in catalogue and stuff. Why should we buy from OW who sit their arse and just wait for people to come in to their store? OW price beat sometimes is full of hairy-black bollocks & nipples. Don't even start me with bunnings

      • +1

I can understand your frustration mate. I went to OW to price beat another item which Dick Smith had and they told me they don't beat the item which got a coupon code. So I ended up buying from the Dikie.

    • This model has been as low as $224…….

      • Not today.

  • Can you take the Toshiba HDD out of its case and use it for internal pc purposes?

  • TV sold out at $1367?

    • Nah use code to bring it down to that :)

    • Yes only in store pick up now

  • Just noticed they dropped another 5% off the 60" FHD

    • Thanks for the update, that's good cause it covers the delivery :)

  • Thanks, OP. Nabbed the TV at $1322.25 delivered.

    • nice! I guess the TVs are back in stock, with additional 5% reduction.

Hope you claimed cash rewards as well 2.5% ~$46

      • Forgot about it completely since I did it from work. Maybe I can cancel it and do it again.

      • Bought it yesterday. Have not received CR email yet.. should i be worried?

    • any updates on if yours is shipped yet?

      • +1

Got an email 5 days ago from DS saying my order is on its way. Tracking says it hasn't moved.. Stuck in Erskineville.

        • same here - booked and 5 days ago in ERSKINEVILLE

        • +1

          @banzini:

I actually received mine on Thursday.

  • anyone had the $1320 tv shipped yet?

    • Apparently my order shipped last Thursday. But it's still pending pick up according to Toll.

      • same here, shipped last tuesday but still pending the pickup!

      • Still pending pickup here over a week later since shipment advice from toll.

        • I got the same notice from Dick a week ago. As I rang up this morning , I was told that the item is not available and there is no confirmed ETA for it. I will never ever purchase from Dick again. Worst retailer I have ever come across.

  • My order has started moving. I ended up contacting the Smiling Dick via Facebook yesterday afternoon. Whether this had anything to do with my order finally moving I don't know..

  • And Toll attempted delivery this morning.

    What a bunch of idiots.

Make sure you are home waiting people.

  • Mine was delivered yesterday. Loved it how I had to wait a week for any update from the ERSKINEVILLE notification.
Then it was on truck and delivered within 8 hours. I ensured I was home as I knew it would have been a disaster to reorganise a shipping time.
