10% off Apple Computers @ JB Hi-Fi

570

10% off all Apple computers. Available in store and online, ends this Sunday 11th October 2015.

Excludes Apple BTO, iPads & Factory Scoop. Discounts apply to most recent previous ticketed/advertised price

For Lumo Energy companies, a good chance to combine discounts with the 7.5% off JB Hi-Fi digital gift cards. Not sure if other places offer these gift cards as well? I know Entertainment Book no longer do for JB. Not as good as the 10% + 10% off Apple with Dick smith gift cards however (although JB appear to have better stock levels).

Officeworks 5% price beat is also possible (thanks jtsback for the reminder), although stock levels vary. iMacs MacBooks

MACBooks market domination is likely to take a hit wit MS new range.Competition is better for us

    • -6

      you have a point.

im not even slightly curious as to what new 'tiles' MS comes up with lol

      thanks for post

    • +1

Surface Book is definitely a good replacement for my Macbook Pro retina 15 this year, unless Apple comes up with a touch screen with digitalised pen but apparently not (coz of iPad Pro)

      • it's only 13.5". Rather prefer the larger screen estate.

      • I am on the same boat. My MBPr 2012 is a little bit slow now. It's a great machine and will last for years. I feel sad that Apple hasn't surprised me a quite long time. Hope Apple could catch up with Microsoft's pace (my own opinion only). Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book are choices over MacBook lines for now.

        • +2

I am interested to know what you mean by "slow". Have you done a clean install?

I owned a 2012 rMBP (when they first came out) and I find it hard to believe that a i7 quad-core computer with all flash storage would be "slow" in 2015 despite it being 2-3 years old.

        • @Tea-Aholic: The GeForce graphic card. I agree with you in terms of i7 and ssd. I even use virtual machine to test SAP and it's fast and stable. But the video card is pretty bad, every OSX update makes gaming performance worse and worse. I know, it's not a gaming machine and I didn't use boot camp. I am comparing gaming performance for the same games over 3 versions of OSX since MBPr release. The games I mentioned are: WOW, Half-life 2 incl. episodes and etc.

        • @AussieGargain: I see. But as you said, it's not a gaming machine, and the fact that you don't use Boot Camp doesn't help either. I don't think gaming in a virtual machine is a good idea nevertheless.

Macbooks don't dominate the market. Australia is filled with simple minded dummies, so don't be fooled.

      • +17

Yep. I am simple minded because I like good looking hardware and operating systems that are a pleasure to use.

        • -7

You can install OSX on almost anything. I installed it on my HP and it worked fine. Then I went back to Linux because I prefer it.

Correcting your statement to "I am simple minded because I like good looking hardware"

        • +11

          @xsacha:

Are you saying my personal opinion and preferences are wrong because you prefer linux?

          Good logic, chief!

        • -4

@Mr Wowtrousers: No, I said buying an Apple computer has nothing to do with the operating system. You can install OSX on almost any laptop. You didn't read what I wrote correctly.

        • +1

@xsacha: "No, I said buying an Apple computer has nothing to do with the operating system."

so damn true, i only run my windows xp on the latest macbook air. that's called taste, as much as you are running os x on hp.

      • No but they dominate the luxury end of the market. Which is all that matters.

      • +1

tendollar you comment on all the Apple threads with your nonsense. Why does this affect you so much?

        • hidden envy.

    • what dominance? they might be gaining but hardly close to dominating .. they have half the market share of Dell who are 3rd! and thats going by manufacturer if we went by windows vs apple they'd be 7.8 and windows would be the rest!

      Q22015

      • +7

MacBooks are the fastest growing computer brand. But you are right that they are still a minor player.

The truth is that the PC industry is in a world of pain at the moment. Low prices, low innovation, low quality is the mainstay of the PC industry. IBM left the PC industry, HP doesn't want to be in it, Dell delisted themselves, Sony has left the industry. It's just a race to the bottom, and everyone is losing.

Apple is one of the only bright spots, High prices, High innovation and high quality.

        • -1

yeh… sorry mate i don't see much innovation to warrant the prices they charge :) specially as an IT guy just don't see it .. ;)

        • I see why Microsoft did it, but they shot themselves in the foot allowing users to install Windows and Office on a OSX. I know at least 10 people who wouldn't even consider a macbook/imac if it couldn't run both of them. Any manufacturer can use Windows, but if you want OSX, you'd have to hand over your money to Apple. Though I rarely use OSX, there's not much reason for me to buy a laptop with one OS, when I get one with 2 OS for a little more

        • -5

High innovation by removing USB sockets? High innovation in the current Mac mini line by soldering RAM to the motherboard and having a flagship CPU which is under powered compared to the previous Mac Mini generation.
Give me a break Apple fan!

As for high quality what a load of bollocks. Bending iPhones and iWatches that don't work on tattoos. Apple products contain a high percentage of generic PC hardware so they are just as prone to break as any generic PC.

If you buy Apple products just admit that you buy style over value/substance instead of convincing yourself that you are getting value for money.

        • +1

@Mr Rort: Bending iPhones and iWatches

Those are not OSX products are they?

The current Macbooks are unparalleled in terms of build quality and customer support.
Surface Book is around the same price as the macbook pro and the pro by default has 16GB of RAM.
Upping both products to $3000 and even then the Pro edges the Surface.

The surface is great but I'd want more at that price.

        • -1

          @spawnpoint:

Which company produces MacBooks … Banana, Celery, Grapes? When I last checked it was Apple.

The fact that Apple were stupid/arrogant enough to release a mobile phone without testing it for strength in the prototype stage really goes to show that you cannot trust Apple when it comes to quality.

        • +1

@Mr Rort: cannot trust Apple when it comes to quality

You do realise microsoft has released their fair share of shit products (The Kin/Vista/Bob), Apple have done so as well.

When comparing the Macbooks to the Surface Book, why does the build quality of a phone matter. Show me proof that macbooks have untrustworthy build quality which is what is relevant here. In my view, most laptops do not even come close to the Macbook build quality, that's something they have done really well.

People have different needs and PC/Mac debate isn't going anywhere. Get what suits your requirements!

        • @scud70:

Do you want to come up with anything with the same specs in the same price-range as a Macbook?

        • @spawnpoint:

In my view, most laptops do not even come close to the Macbook build quality

True but because other manufacturers build cheap laptops too. HP Spectre. Dell XPS 13, and Asus Zenbook are very nice.

        • -1

@spawnpoint: Is there really any point in responding to someone who is so obviously a slave to Android and MS Windows?

Normal people just brush over this, the slaves feel compelled to bring up their pet favourite OS as a kneejerk reaction to anything at all regarding their religion. Obviously these people are usually atheists as well lel.

        • @ozhunter:

Yeah I had those in mind when I wrote most. I'd also include the Sony Vaio Pro 13 and the lenovo Carbon series as well(although they lose points for bloatware).

        • @spawnpoint: Actually when it comes to build quality and customer support Dell's Latitude and XPS machines are the ones to beat which have magnesium chassis and Gorilla Glass displays not to mention next business day onsite servicing.

The Mac line works fine and they are pretty to look at but there is a reason businesses stick with Dell and Lenovo.

Also all the 13" MBP's come with 8GB of RAM as standard. Saying that the MBP's edges out the Surface Book seems completely ignorant of the actual specs, the display on the Surface Book has a higher resolution with a 13.5" screen than even the 15" Retina MPB, the Surface has the option of a discrete GPU whereas the 13" MBP has no such option this is not even taking into account the pen digitizer and the ability to convert to a tablet.

        • @serideth:

I was comparing with the 15" MBP as the Surface Book pricing is closer to the 15" rather than the 13", but yeah the Surface Book is definitely better than the 13" MBP.

Surface is definitely better when it comes to Power and Portability.

        • @spawnpoint: Macbook pro 13 inch by default has 4GB of RAM, Macbook pro retina 13 inch by default has 8GB of RAM. Only Macbook pro retina 15 inch by default has 16GB of RAM. However the 15 inch one is bigger and heavier, it dose not mean to compete with Surface book or surface pro. If the touch screen and pen on surface book/pro works as good as the ipad pro, it will be a good reason for Microsoft to sell them at a high price.

    • +6

They've priced the new Surface Book way too high, with even the base model starting at $2300, $500 more than the equivalent Macbook Pro (even more when you consider 10% off Macbooks seems pretty routine now). IMHO I don't think Apple sales will be too affected, and I expect some price adjustment by MS in the near future once they see how poorly they sell.

On the other hand, I'd say your right about the Surface Pro 4 stealing some Macbook customers.

      • +1

This. I bought my MBP 13 Retina a few years back because it represented the best value laptop with the best combination of price, performance, battery life, size, weight and display quality: especially for photography - back then it was a rarity to find a decent, high res IPS screen with accurate colour running Windows. If they existed they were MUCH more expensive.

I got my macbook for $1500 and it was head and shoulders better than anything else back then around that price point. The Surface Book got me excited because it would fulfill the niche for both a laptop and tablet and meant I could stick to one OS instead of having to muck around with NTFS for mac and file syncing/networking and other minor niggles, but then i saw the price and that killed it for me.

        • I bought a MBP Retina last year for the same reason, excellent value and I could dual boot it although Windows scaling wasn't perfect. I'd get a Surface Book if it was nearly half the price it is now

        • @backslashio:

Same reason why I bought mine. Also wanted to try OSX. Although the Surface Book has a touch screen, stylus support, detachable display; it's not worth the price difference for me. Then again, that is rrp and store are likely to have sales/discounts.

      • I can understand why Microsoft is pricing their products high. They have found the "new" generation that considers low priced items to be of inferior quality (why else would a woman buy a handbag for several thousand dollars). So from a marketing point of view pricing it high will fool the trendsetters and status fools to buy one just to show off.

        • -3

You seem to have very little understanding of brands and status symbols. Do you have the money to know what your talking about? Didn't think so.

      • I think it's justified with the discrete graphics alone in this form factor. The MB pro 13" only has integrated gpu. For casual users who only use their computers as a facebook machine, word processing and web browsing you aren't going to see any benefit. In fact, you probably won't even see the difference between a 2k and a 4k machine.

But a dedicated gpu means a world of a difference for content creators who need that exta performance, and to a lesser extent, gaming.

But what do i know, neither th MB nor the surface book appeals to me with that rediculous price tag. But i do admire the fine engineering that goes into it.

        • The models with the discrete gpu start at $3000 in Australia, and even that only gets you 8GB of Ram, a small SSD and an i5. I would jump on one of these if they were similarly priced to a Macbook. I'll give it a couple of months and see how low the prices get.

  • I was thinking of getting a MacBook Pro so this is good timing. From searching it seems 10% off is the best deal I can expect.

Though, this is definitely the latest models, right? They're not getting rid of old stock? https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/apple/ap… has Model: MJLT2X/A SKU: 687135.

Actually, I do like the new Surface Book, and I am upgrading from a Surface Pro 2, but I want to get into iOS development. My thinking is I can run Office 2016 (I have an Office 365 sub), Dropbox, XCode, Safari, StarCraft II and some other games on the Mac side, and Windows 10/Visual Studio under Parallels. Or is the better choice VMWare Fusion?

      • +1

You can't run XCode on the Surface Book though, that's the problem - for iOS development you need a Mac.

        • -4

Get a second hand mac mini.
          Use savings for Surface Book.

        • +1

          @anthonettex:

But why? 2 devices instead of one, and the mac mini would be less powerful.

        • Agreed.

As it turns out, an equivalently-spec'd Surface Book is actually more expensive than the MacBook Pro anyhow!

So, anthonettex's option would be two less powerful devices, one of which is not really portable and out of support.

      • +5

        The 16Gb / 512Gb Surface Book is $4,199 - http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/productI…

It's actually more expensive than the 16Gb / 512Gb MacBook Pro by almost $1K !

That actually makes the decision much easier for me now …!

        • +2

I got the 16/512 15" Macbook Pro Retina in the last 10% JB sale, got 18 months interest free too. It flys.

        • That's great! Thanks Robster33.

        • Keep in mind Microsoft store prices are usually RRP, you will probably be able to pick them up much cheaper elsewhere. Also, they've just been announced so likely to decrease in price once they recoup some of their R&D.

Your question would be answered if you just decide which OS you prefer to use. Personally i prefer windows but that's not to say OSX isnt good i just like using windows.

        • It is also more powerful than the MacBook with a better CPU, discreet graphics and a better display resolution. That is also the MS store price which most retailers I would think will be undercutting significantly.

        • @Robster33: 18 months interest free from JBHIFI? :)

    • +1

      Re:parallels
Haven't used it myself but from my research it's much of a muchness, vmware can be had cheaper so that's the direction I took.
There are too many things that annoy me with the virtualization though, I recommend setting up bookcamp instead.

      • Thanks ory_zm. What are some of the things that annoy you?

        • +1

I had some problems with a USB connected printer, network adapter and file sharing. If you used virtualation before you would know it is good but not as good as a physical computer so based on what you're going to need Windows for it might be simpler to boot camp.

      • +1

I have bootcamp and parallels running. Parallels when I need to quickly jump into Windows, bootcamp when I want the computer to be pure windows.

I think I have booted fully into Windows under 10 times in 4.5 years.

        • Interesting… What do you use Windows for?

        • @ory_zm:

At the time, games ;) it was pretty much a backup for software that wasn't available on Mac. The only thing I really used it for was some Japanese teaching software (when I was in Japan) and a couple of indie Steam games.

Honestly unless you are a major gamer, all the significant productivity and art apps I use are on both Windows and OSX and I think Windows is a fugly mess, so why use it?

Having said that, I have not paid full price for a Macbook Pro yet, and mine recently dying (but thankfully being covered by a special Apple replacement warranty) has me genuinely considering if I can afford to stay in the Macbook Pro camp, given they keep making it less and less "pro".

Having said that, I no longer work as a pro CG artist (but still do some home recording), so my needs have scaled back quite a bit.

At the moment, for me, the build quality of the machine, the quality if the track pad, OSX and the fact that it can also turn into a 100% Windows machine is enough to sway me.

If the surface pro can compare to, say, a Wacom cintiq in terms of quality of touch screen/stylus AND is a full blown Windows computer, well … that could be a winner.

I have used enough crappy laptops to say that the Macbook is a superior user experience … for ME.

I also have a Windows desktop for gaming, so am not particularly wedded to Mixro$oft vs Sheeple arguments. Used Linux for a while on high end 3d workstations as well. Anyone who keeps saying " this is the year of (desktop) linux " is in denial and their opinion shouldn't be trusted ;)

        • I had both bootcamp and parallels running. I got rid of bootcamp pretty early on because parallels was way more convenient and good enough for what I needed it for.

  • +13

Is anyone getting tired of the Mac/PC and iOS/Android debate?
No? Very well then, carry on.

    • +2

      Me, very much.

    • Nope, it's quite amusing watching them battle it out.

    • I like it, it makes fools easy to see.

    • No, as long as people don't let their fanboyism get in the way.

    • -1

People pick sides and refuse to move from party lines, its like politics.

I don't know how anyone can call a lot of Apple gear overpriced, their Macbook line in particular is affordable considering how high their build quality is. Sure you could get similar specs for $100-200 less elsewhere, but you often pay for it in the long run. My Apple computers are all incredibly reliable and have excellent resale.

  • Officeworks pricematch :D Although, stock levels at officeworks are abysmal.

  • +4

You can walk into any Apple store and ask for 10% off an apple computer pretty much any day.

You just have to ask nicely :)

    • Alternatively, if you know anyone with a student card, the education discount is not a bad jab at getting an "everyday low price" either.

    • I huess I got unlucky, I tried so hard… they didnt budge :( RRP or bust they said.

I was feeling let down, then called the apple store phone sales right from the mall. Dude there offered me a 7% discount (which was decent enough). Got it thru him.

      • How many staff members did you ask in store? Theres only about 100 blue apple smurfs roaming around an apple store.

7% is weak. 10% minimum and then when you combine with other discounts such as cash rewards and discounted gift vouchers it makes a great deal!

        • How many staff members did you ask in store

How many do you have to ask?

        • @ozhunter: One should have been enough. If one says no then just ask another. hastagbargain must have asked some rude power hungry staff member that needed a slap.

        • @slash: I was unfortunate enough to meet a string of geniuses that day, none of whom budged. Thinking I needed to escalate, I asked for the manager. But that guy came out and said he couldnt do it either. So much for the "Apple experience".

  • +2

Waiting for an iPad discount! I'm too cheap to pay RRP even with my Dick Smith 10% extra gift cards.

  • Hardware,software, in-house design and development…

my credit card is already crossing the limit and now u post deal ;p

  • 2 weeks ago i rang officework and asked for pricebeat, they said yes and reserve an unit for me. same day that night i walked to the store and got told that the offer was invalid because officework had the price dropped itself during the day… it sucks

  • is it better to buy a refurbished one from the apple store?

    • +1

      Well it's cheaper, not better.

  • +4

    Thank you OzBargain!

Got a Macbook Pro for my wife 5 days ago, went back to store today with receipt and got the difference ($179.80) refunded!

    Thanks again :)

    • +1

What? I didn't know they do price guarantees! That's great news :)

  • does anyone know if there is any limit to number of gift cards that can be used for 1 transactionwhen shopping online with JBHIFI?

  • Buying from Apple Store -
I am interested in buying from Apple Store, as I am unsure whether to get a Macbook Air 13 or a Macbook Pro 13 (With Retina) as Buying through the Apple Store allows me to return within 2 weeks and change to another model if i wish.

    1. Does anyone have experience with Apple Store price-matching external retailers
(If so, i suspect its not for BUILT TO ORDER)
    2. If i do built to order (either DSE or JB), can I still get Mac Care? Do you think there is any change of mind policy?
    3. Any experience buying re-furbs from Mac. Are they good?
    • Air if you want it to be a little lighter and thinner and have better battery life or the Pro if want a better display and more power. I think the choice is easy and I'd choose the Pro.

      1. Apparently you can just 10% off anytime, though it's not guaranteed. Just a guess, but I doubt they do it for BTO.
      2. Yes. No
      3. Just like new ones, they are just refurbished.
    • Why are you even comparing these two? Even the resolution itself is way too different between them.

    • I made a spreadsheet comparing prices across for items i was interested in. Interesting for a quick browse:

      http://imgur.com/t0dx9Lz

    • I priced matched an iPad in the Apple store because I couldn't be bothered walking to JB recently.
No questions, asking a manager, etc they just knocked the 10% off

I wouldn't do it again though - better service at JB

  • +2

These apple 10% has been a regular thing, I can't seem to find anything special from something that's almost occurring at a weekly basis, :))

  • At 10% off, Apple products are still overpriced.

    • You can say the same thing about Mercedes, Rolex, Sydney houses, etc.

  • Just a review on MacBooks in general. I got one in 2012. I'm still using it everyday for many hours at a time and also bring it to uni/work etc. These puppies are very hardy. Unlike my previous Asus and HP computers, I was changing one every 2 years.

So yes Macs are more expensive, but the price is justified over the amount of years you can use it. Also the shortcuts are fantastic, which is something windows didn't seem to have when I was using the windows system. Will definitely continue buying Apple.

    • +2

To be fair I think sometimes durability is closely related to whether it's a flagship/high end model or not. With Apple there's really only flagship models with good build quality, with other brands there are plenty of low end cheaper models. The fact is, high end Windows laptops, especially ultrabooks are no cheaper than macbooks, so I really hope people can stop saying macbooks are more expensive. Also comparing a cheap lower end Windows laptop to a macbook is totally unfair as well. (not saying you are, but many people that switched to Macs simply don't realise they just had a shitty low end model, sort of like saying a mid low end Android phone is worse than an iPhone.)
That said, Apple's customer service is hard to beat with the presence of Apple stores. (But for countries that don't have Apple stores, their after sales service is crappy)

  • 10% off every second week and it still gets heaps of votes…insane.

    • iInsane People we are ;p

  • in my uni everyone has a macbook pro. I don't :(
