Did anyone notice when ordering, when the drop down box for state opens, one of the options is Jervis Bay Territory.Do they know something we don't?

    • +2

It's the A.C.T. by the sea. I assume selecting ACT in other sites would be equivalent. Population 377, so few would need to select it.

"The Jervis Bay Territory (abbreviated as JBT) is a territory of the Commonwealth of Australia. It was surrendered by the state of New South Wales to the Commonwealth Government in 1915 so that the Federal capital at Canberra would have access to the sea."

"under the terms of the Jervis Bay Territory Acceptance Act, the laws of the ACT apply to the Jervis Bay Territory"

      Interestingly,
"The Defence Force Discipline Act (DFDA) Section 61 makes all Australian Defence Force members and "Defence Civilians" subject to the criminal laws of the Jervis Bay Territory regardless of where the offence occurred. This is a legal device which makes Defence personnel subject to the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth), the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth) and offences against the criminal law of the ACT, as military law, even if the offence is committed outside Australia."

Ah, Wikipedia. Another fact I don't know I didn't know.

Great read! You learn something new every day!

I loved this from Wikipedia in the 'Geography' section for the Irony…

Ancient sand dunes overlay the sedimentary bedrock formations formed from upheaval of the surrounding marine environment 280–225 million years ago. The park was designated sacred Aboriginal land in 1995. A significant portion of the bay's northern coast and headland forming Beecroft Peninsula and ending at Point Perpendicular and surrounding area is a gun bombardment range for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

It starts off so poetic, like a tourist promotion… and ends with a bang.

As in other places like Stonehenge, ancient areas & artifacts coexist with military. It was very strange visiting Stonehenge, marvelling at the monument & imagining a very different existence - while huge tanks were on maneuvers & firing close by. In many areas, it is the military use that keeps out people who may be more destructive.

        • @Infidel: I like your way of thinking with this concept; that for something to be looked after it almost requires a military presence (training etc) in the vicinity to justify the 'Keep Out' fencing/boundaries etc. Never quite considered this! Cheers.

        • +1

          @rawm:
The military employ archeologists to survey & protect these areas. Often do a better job than elsewhere. If you think what was lost under our urban development, a bit of bombing & training doesn't seem so destructive ;-)

I hang out on archeological sites - just an interest. On one in Southern Japan, the Chief Archeologist & I had a wonderful time discussing the possible uses of some 9000 year old early Jomon period artifacts. Of course I knew next to nothing, but learnt a lot. Watching a room of people piecing together ancient pots was amazing.

The very important site was found while digging a new road. It turned the understanding of early development in Japan on its head.

You never know what is out there until you stumble upon it :-)

  • If you want to hang a few different ones up around the house, can you order more than one?

  • Thanks Infidel.I did not bother to do any research as I assumed it was the Yanks being stupid.
Unusual for an Infidel to be supplying information re Aust Defence Acts. Watch out ASIO will be tracking you. By writing ASIO and infidel I suppose they will be tracking both of us.

    • It was an interesting observation - something I like. So thanks for the lesson ;-)

But as for the "Infidel", its worth looking at the meaning. It may not be what you think it is….
It is generally defined as not my group or belief. It is the outsider, the other, who sees things different to the dominant group.
So to many in Australia, the infidel is currently seen as Muslim. To some Muslem & others, it is Westerners or Christians. To some religious people, it may be atheists, and so on. It is what your group don't want you to be involved with. Its not me! The Infidel is inside peoples' minds…

Don't worry, my activist days are well behind me :-)
(I have an official letter from a Sir somebody, saying my files - if they ever existed, were destroyed. More than that, it is best not to divulge.)

  • If you have a letter saying no files exist, I'd be worried.

I was aware of the broader meaning of "infidel", however I have a Muslim friend who likes the occasional glass of red wine with a meal and always jokingly blames the infidels of leading him astray. So the infidel Islam connection stuck in my head.

    • Like your observation about Jervis Bay, I had no understanding about the term Infidel. We use terms we don't really understand. I'm always learning.
In life, its always handy to have someone to blame ;-)

  • haven't gotten mine yet. I'll just buy one.

  • If you don't see a form to submit your details, here's an alternative link, good luck
    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache%3Awww.t…

  • Has anyone got their calendar yet?
I asked for the paper brochure of cruises - thinking it will be posted along with the calendar. (This post really did pique my interest in their cruises). I just got an email thanking me for my interest and pointers to their cruises, signed by CEO no less :-))
Hope they will still send the calendar!

  • 1 Month on has anyone got their calendars from Tauck?

    • I have a feeling they won't be sending the calendar. Hope I am wrong :-) As per my comment, even though I asked for paper brochure, they ended up just sending email info!

  • Haven't gotten mine.

  • 2016 is almost here, but no calender from this deal. Lucky I did get the free horse calender.

Wall calendars still are useful, especially when planning holidays, Tauck Travel. Tauck you 🙅

Today I received the printed brochures, but no calendar. I think this free calendar may just have been a bait. And it worked, in my case at least, as I became genuinely interested in some of their tours.

I suppose I should stay clear as far as actual tours go, if they can't even honour the free calendar.

It is understandable if they have run out due to heavy demand. But they are still advertising this free calendar on their website. Which is a bit misleading, if they have no intention of fulfilling it.

    • I also wonder if this deal should not be marked expired - to save time and effort of those hoping for a free calendar. But most of all, to avoid supplying personal details to them.

  • I too received brochures only sans calendar
