'The Gauntlet 3 features an Aircraft Grade sleek and durable uni-body aluminum body, that blends in with the aesthetics of any computer ecosystem' I love marketing lol. Though I'd sure hope the aircraft I fly in are built better than a $10 HD case :)

    Good buy though.

    • Lol! U better hope so..

Are they trying to say that it's as tough as a black box?

      • +13

Those black boxes have to be tough, have you seen the BBC's they have to handle, they can take a pounding ;-)

      • No.

    • +2

Hahahah 1970s aircraft grade, now everything's moving to composite.

    • aesthetic as fuaaaa

  • Nice, good to put a cheap SSD in!

    • +2

… no, 'cause TRIM isn't supported over USB.

  • Edit:I was going to say it may be better to get a USB to Sata cable but this is cheaper so nevermind.

    • What if you drop it?

      • why would you do that ?

        • +1

          You wouldn't, but accidents happen.

Noob question. Will this work with all the SSD drives that TA posts? I just want to run OSX from it for my Mac Mini. Thanks :)

    • +1

Read the note above. Trim doesn't work over usb it seems.

      • I don't know what trim is and how it relates… I'm a failure :0

        • Not having TRIM isn't a big deal. Without getting into the technical details, it simply speeds up the ssd as it slows down over time.

I really wouldn't worry about it if i were you, you're most likely going to see a bottleneck in the enclosure for an SSD.

        • Lol, I wouldnt worry unless you are planning to use it for daily video editing or something like that.

        • @spillmill: thankyou

        • @Hunga: thankyou

        • +1

@Hunga: You're probably more likely to be okay without it on newer SSDs as they (hopefully) have better in built garbage collection, but I was seeing progressively shocking write speeds after 2 years on an older Crucial model when TRIM was disabled (like 40mb/s r/w kind of bad). A few hours after I enabled it again, it was back to its original speed. YMMV, and the extent of its effects will vary in different models, but generally I'm a big TRIM fanboy after it brought my SSD back to life! #my2c

        • I've been using these cases to dump my 250GB SSD's in as I'be upgraded other devices to 500GB and 1TB.

Works fine ….. even have one attached to the TV media player.

The TRIM isn't a big deal ….. many OS's and some SSD drives don't support it either and people don't know it.

Mine has green plastic front, so it seems they might have a few colours, or a batch thing ?

      • Thanks too

  • postage will cost you another $12.5

    • I got $10.91 at checkout

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX2O80ReSzs shows R/W speeds of 380-420MB/s for those interested in using this for a SSD.

  • This is good to put to use the old laptop hard drives were replaced with an SSD instead of throwing them away.

For example to fit this: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Scorpio-Cache-Notebook…

Cheers OP have 1 ready to be picked up :)

Doesn't mention support for UASP so I'm inclined to think its not supported for high speed SSD transfer. Therefore there are better options for around the same price - eg http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/peripherals/15821-unitek-y-3…

    • I got the Unitek one last week (was $12) just because of the UASP support. However I'm not happy with the quality of the case, it feels like a piece of cheap plastic.

      • well its a 12$ item. spend a little more for better quality. this item is the cheapest with this support. Good enough for a desk item!

    • Can confirm UASP support according to CrystalDiskInfo. Also comes up as Patriot SCSI Disk Device in Windows. Although I'm using it with a HDD so can't confirm fastest speeds (getting 105-115Mb/s with a WD Blue)

  • These were $9 couple of weeks back.comes with a small screwdriver, screws & cable. The green facia stands out.

    • That's a different product. Patriot Gauntlet PCGTII25S

        What is the difference?

        • This one is Sata 3 vs Sata 2 for earlier product, not sure if much difference since usb 3.0 may be the bottleneck

        • @jammy2:
          Thank you

      • Amazon reviews are as confused as I am. There's a blue inner, or a green inner, or an all black version.

Green are USB2 speeds - I've got almost 10 of them. Excellent for the price, if simply after a case.

        • mine is green and it's definitely USB3, has USB3 connector, came with usb3 cable, and also the speed when writing to it.

        • @garage sale: Mine are all green, bought over 12-18mths, and top out at <35MB/s. USB3 cable/badge mean nothing, unfortunately. Anything over ~27MB/s is enough to qualify.

Thank you very much for posting this OP
I purchased 2 from MSY Auburn
I haven't tried them yet, but the quality looks superb
Definitely better than the cheap plastic Orico/No-name enclosures on ebay and aliexpress

  • I just purchased one of these from MSY earlier this week. The normal price was $15, but he gave it to me for $10 (without me even asking for a discount)

  • Do I need more hard drive hmmmm

    • probably don't need more hard drives, but what to do as you upgrade other devices to SSD.

Also nice if you are upgrading laptops and need to clone your new drive, then leave old drive in the case for your backup.

Some of mine, I will put in these cases, add some velcro and stick to the side of the wii, ps3, xbox360 and xbox one …. they are my sons consoles.

  • For the shipping cost, I hope I can pick one up in-store.

  • 12$ shipping, lol no..

  • Just picked up 2. I was more happy when I opened to find the usb cable are the ones that is used for Samsung note 3 phones. My old cable has slowed down while charging and this cable did the job perfectly. Paid 7AUD to get a replacement and it died within a week. Hope this will last long.
