DICK Smith staff were encouraged to purchase items from its controversial fire sale, a leaked email shows, despite the company’s claims to the contrary.

In a statement to news.com.au on Monday, the company said it “does not allow its staff to hold back or reserve any discounted product before it is available to the general public. Dick Smith takes any allegations of this occurrence very seriously and is investigating the allegation further, in addition to reinforcing our existing policy with all staff members,” a spokeswoman said.

A similar statement was given to the numerous customers who took the Dick Smith’s Facebook page to complain. But according to an internal email sent last Tuesday, obtained by news.com.au, the company was only too happy to have staff snap up the bargains.

“Hi Team, as we near the end of Clearance Day 1 it’s clear to see store teams have put an enormous amount of passion and energy towards execution and customer engagement,” national operations support manager Jason Woodland wrote. “As we approach the next couple of days with more categories joining the clearance activity, we are removing the rule we set yesterday regarding staff purchases this week. Effective immediately (yes today) staff are able to buy clearance lines at the reduced price now reflected on the POS. No further discounts apply because these offers are just so hot! Happy Shopping!”

    Total dicks

Happy shopping!!!! More like "Happy Hoarding". Dick is dicks, what were they thinking? Don't they realised there will be negative repercussion from the customer? This offer is a cruel joke to everyone, hope they go under, this sort of company deserved it, just feel sorry for everyone who bought their shares at $2.20 https://foragerfunds.com/bristlemouth/dick-smith-is-the-grea….

      Ban Dicks!!!!

      • +2

what are u talking about? Why can't dse employees use their money the way they want?

        • +7

They can, just dont misleadingly promote it as a public sale available to everyone if the employees are just going to buy everything to resell on ebay and leave nothing for customers. Keep it internal and dont advertise it.

        • +4

Nothing wrong with buying stuff in their own time. But when they are allowed to hoard all the good stuff while they are working then it becomes an issue.

        • +2

@Orpheus: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/222849 . I read there was a Dick Smith sale. The first day of the sales. I went to Dick Smith at 09:00. Numerous other ozbarganers had gathered. We went in and scooped up bargains. Then we did the same at DJ which opened at 09:30.

The staff at both stores learned of the sale through ozbargainers as soon as the doors opened. We got the bargains before the staff had a chance to think about it, because they were only discovering the pricing as they scanned the item in front of us.

      • +6

I agree. Can we ban this shit from ozb? Enough is enough.

      • +1

I don't understand why everyone assumes staff hoard stuff if the customer cannot get the bargain themselves. I just don't see a clear connection between the two…

    • -6

Thanks mate. Bloody staff members. I wasted my sick leave on this. Useless people!

      • +1

Higher management are the ones to blame imo for not only allowing this sort of thing but even going so far as to encourage it (see excerpts from the leaked email from their national operations support manager above). Store staff were made the scapegoats once the complaints started racking up. Pathetic stuff.

  • +6

I must admit having walked into the store today to look for some bargains, the store is looking rather sad/drab….most of the store is a heap of over priced crap and/or poor choice. I'd go to JB HiFi/Good guys in a heart beat most other times.

  • Fine print:
    * No delivery available
    * Pickup in store only from the cordoned off section out the back (next to toilet)
    * Disregard "out of stock" products - see your staff member (next to toilet)

    • +3

Next thing you know, the toilet's for sale.

      • toilet's for sale

Well that's where dick goes mate…

  • +2

Excludes everything that has not been increased by 20%

  • Ok guys calm down… Its not that bad.. I bought so much CRAP in last few days for ridiculously low prices and now no idea what to do with all that.. this include 2$10 wifi 32 GB drives, 2$25 metal tool box with 125 pieces, air dehumidifier, purifier, many LED lights probably all of that under $100.. so I am happy and going to waste more money on "Friends & Family Offer".. Thanks Op

  • +5

    "So much CRAP" lol
    Sums it up nicely ;)

  • +3

What's left there to buy then?!

  • +1

    selfie sticks and phone covers

  • What is a standard partner discount? Is that partner of staff member? So the discount not applicable to non-staff?

  • LMAO

  • +1

thanks Dick, but no thanks, waiting for your doors closing though

    • +1

      Remember when Brushes closed down?
Tried to get a Bargain, "no offer refused" sale.
I made quite a reasonable offer on DVD player, staff just looked at me laughed and chucked the item on his hoard heap and said next.
Given DSE history even at the closing down sale staff will get first second and third pick and we get the empty shelving units at 20% above RRP.

      No thanks

  • +1

Considering Dick's history of deals here this is a neg unless We know of Actual deals, Products with Discounts.

  • +1

Well it's a legitimate sale. I picked up skylanders starter set for Xbox 360 for $10 and Move braided iPhone cables for $10. Disney infinity and skylanders were 80% off. Xbox 360 games all $10 and Xbox one games all $20. There were iPad cases for $1 and headphones heavily discounted. Unfortunately they couldn't find the robo vac which had $350 offI and only the empty box was left. This was at Tweed Centro. I am well aware of dick smiths tactics, but this is a genuine sale and there are bargains to be had most certainly.

  • +1

    Not a bargain.

  • +2

Dick is dick. They don't even want to match the price, the reason was below their cost price. What a joke…

  • Sunshine Dick Smith supervisor says it doesn't include clearance items. I didn't have time to argue but based on the exclusions (not valid with any other offer) I thought he could be right.
