eBay Cashback 4.4% Sitewide @ Cashrewards (Please Read Post)

3810

It’s the New Year and the team at Cashrewards thanks each and every member for your continued support. We are in awe of how much our community has grown in the past 12 months. We've been able to offer some incredibly whacky rates on cashback for eBay - Australia’s biggest shopping website.

We recently received news from eBay stating the amount of cashback that Cashrewards (or any other cashback site or points program) will be able to offer will be reduced to around 1.00%. There is unfortunately nothing we can do to change this, but Cashrewards & eBay will be working closer than ever to bring you the best offers and promotions going forward.

With your help, we will become the largest community of shoppers in Australia, and the Cashrewards team will work harder than ever to ensure your loyalty is rewarded with the best deals, coupons and cashback offers anywhere on the planet!

With this in mind, we want to go out with a bang and offer a great cashback rate of 4.4% on eBay Australia sitewide for two days only. Rest assured this will never be repeated, as beyond January 6 at 3pm AEDT the rate will drop to around 1.00%.

It's a good reason to stop upvoting every ebay deal that pops up here.

    • " they finished it early when it was supposed to finish at midninght."

      midnight the next day!

    • they probably saw the amount of payouts required and realised they were making a huge loss. Too bad they didn't follow thru.. Luckily I got my max worth of discount before they stopped it.

      • +2

I realise over the last year I have not made an eBay transaction unless there was a sale or cashback offer. Too overpriced otherwise. Also the fees are too much of a sting to make it worth selling. I'll still keep an eye out for decent sales but won't be using it otherwise.

  • +1

don't ozbargain or cashrewards have an interest in providing a trading facility?
I'd have thought we'd be a pretty decent base to kick of an ebay killer??

  • +3

So, did eBay hire Tightarse… because this is

  • +3

For some one moving from the US to Australia, I have to agree that ebay is taking Aussies for a ride with some of their ridiculous prices!
I know they cannot match the US prices but at least try to reduce the gap…

    • +1

      Ebay doesn't set the prices…

  • This may be a silly question..

I know that the Cashback works on Buy It Now items, but does it work on normal eBay auctions also?

More than 9/10 times, my purchases on eBay are via the Buy It Now options.

    • Yes, whether it is BIN or auction or 'Best Price' theoretically CR should be tracking all three kinds.

      • Thanks!

The vast majority of the time when I bid on an auction it's usually on my phone with a few minutes/seconds left on the auction…. but good to know I should do it on my PC.

But generally a moot point as I only 'win' about 1 out of 10 auctions I bid on.

        • +2

Cashrewards works on mobile as well. You don't need a PC or desktop browser to track it successfully.

        • @scrimshaw:

I should of said eBay app…

        • @scrimshaw:

I've NEVER had a successful CR transaction on my phone…

        • @supasaiyan: did you turn on 'private mode' while browsing?

  • +2

eBay needs a competitor/s. Stat! More and more people turning to toabao and AliE.

    • Gumtree (locally i mean)? no selling fees no paypal fees. happy seller.

      • and Happy eBay… using another one of their services.

        • yes but still free to use.

        • @kiLbiL:
And when it starts to ramp up in popularity..
          WAM!

          Fees and fees galore..

      • +1

More referring to an auction site. It depends on the item. People give the most insulting low ball offers on GT. My mate tried to sell a lounge on GT (great condition and brand name), all he got was, "I'll tell what champ. How's about ya give ta me fa free. Save's ya a trip to da tip." Sold it for $400. I use both - but pick my battles.

        • +1

          i wouldn't deny that.

        • +3

That's precisely why I don't use GT. Full of idiots like that.

        • +4

There's a reason people try that stuff on - because sometimes it works. People sell stuff because they no longer want it - and people make those silly offers know that.

Also, there's just as many idiot sellers.

e.g. I'm looking for a piano. I see GT pianos of very similar age/condition. One will be free - another will be $1000 - or more - sometimes 3x more! There's one piano there at the moment that's several decades old for $6000 - sure, it looks great because it was restored - but that was years ago. So it's no better than one that wasn't restored.

i.e. 15 minutes of research should tell these sellers because it 'looks beautiful' means zip. If it hasn't been tuned regularly - or at least recently - it qualifies as little more than landfill. Besides, I can purchase an excellent Yamaha or Kawai full height piano, much younger (pianos have about a 30 year lifespan), from dozens of stores any day of the week for $2000-$4000.

Then theres 'idiots' that list something for sale - on the internet - but won't answer simply questions via email. Text I can understand - because it may cost them dozens of replies. But I'm not ringing a mobile only to be sent to voicemail. Or if I get through, THEN the seller wants to spend MY money yakking, because they couldn't be bothered putting enough info the auction in the first place.

e.g. "Mobile home - too many features to list. No email or SMS. Phone me." Um… It's THOUSANDS of dollars. How hard is it to say if it's currently registered or not, how many seatbelts, how many beds, and does it have a shower and toilet. EVERY person that wants to buy one, wants to know these things.

      • +2

Ironically, Gumtree is owned by eBay.

        • Clever, aren't they?

  • If i got my 5% cashback I would be vaguely happy. the only time where i seem to have had any issues with Cashrewards, or Cashrewards + ebay, and it then it happens for the higher cashback period…strange indeed?

  • +2

    Off Topic,

I've used eBay for 15 years but haven't sold an item on eBay for over 10 years.. but WOW, the final fee is now 9.9% (plus PayPal fees)!!!!

    • +4

That's damn true! eBay is definitely ripping off its customers (sellers). Poor form again eBay. It's so sad!

    • +3

Been selling for a while. The fees are certainly a rip off. Pair that with the ever increasing postage costs from auspost.

    • +2

Mmhmm plus final evaluation is payable on shipping

    • +1

It has been at that rate for a few years now, that is why I always try and sell on gumtree first and then go to paypal if I have to

      • +1

I haven't sold in years,, but I had a few spare Toner cartridges that I don't need anymore and was thinking about listing them.

I will still list them on eBay but was surprised at the fees on the final listing and postage fee.

Gumtree is good to sell, but you will only get local buyers, and sometimes you don't want the hassles of people showing up at your door for low value items.

        • +3

Yeh it's a tough situation, you can get some dodgy gum tree buyers

        • @strikerzebra:

the vast majority of people are fine, but I've had issues with no shows and people low balling you.

At least with eBay, you only have to deal with the buyer (other than answering questions from all bidders) and they aren't going to ask for a 50% discount to the agreed price when they show up at your house.

Gumtree is still worth using to sell products you can't ship, however eBay is a better place to sell if you can/are willing to post it.

        • +4

          @JB1:

Yeh I've found a lot of people on gumtree have terrible communication skills, will contact you saying they really want an item and then you never hear from them again.

        • +4

sometimes you don't want the hassles of people showing up at your door for low value items.

I think you just mean this ^^^

        • @Firey1989:

I won't disagree with you there, but I do want their money! lol

        • @strikerzebra:

I've bought a few things using Gumtree with good success.

Usually they have had heaps of people low balling them via SMS etc.

I usually call them if it's a reasonable time, or SMS them if it's the middle of the night, I make a fair offer and collect it at an agreed time. The sellers are usually normal people just like you and me.

I have heard some sellers get contacted by the same person low balling them using 3-4 different phones, I think to wear down the sellers and get them to sell at a lower price just to avoid further 'buyers'.

        • +2

          @JB1:

Haha wow with 3-4 different phones, they sound like expert bargainers, but that is why some people simply don't use gumtree because of the ridiculous offers received

        • +2

          @strikerzebra:
Yeah, got an offer this morning on Gumtree of $100 for an item that was brand new that I had listed for $185, but actually goes for almost $400 retail. Happens all the time on Gumtree.

        • @fatpizza:

I guess some desperate people would just sell it for that price

    • Its 16% including paypal fees and all the other fees.

      • 16%???
How'd you work out it came to that?

    • +1

Yeah that's why I only sell on gumtree, no fees, all profit. Some items might sit there for weeks but eventually gets sold if you're patient. I guess the downside would be less exposure but hey, I'll take free from 10% selling fee any day.

  • -3

Could you please show us the email from ebay. For some reason I don't believe it

  • I never get the Cashrewards money with Ebay anyway. I've got 4 still pending dating back to October and the 2 recent purchases I made (that were actually significant amounts) didn't even show up.

    • +2

Nothing is paid out until 90 days have passed.

  • So is eBay reducing their payouts to affiliates too? Or just limiting the rebates that can be payed out to end customers.

    • Paid*

    • I'd like to know the answer to this as well I can't find anything on https://www.ebaypartnernetwork.ebay.com to suggest anything is changing. Perhaps it only affects sites that give "cashback" to customers. I don't actually see how a website like cashrewards benefits eBay at all, I really doubt they bring in any significant new business. It would surely have to be a net loss to ebay where as actual affiliates (like bloggers for example) would surely bring in new sales).

  • +5

Least I can swap to using Velocity eStore, 2 points per $1

    • Yep, or the Flybuys equivalent… Flybuys eShop.

      • +1

Or the Qantas Online Mall, 2 points per $1 as well.

  • You're encouraging me to buy my watch list. It'll break the credit card limit :(

  • +2

eBay still think that AU is some mega rich country because it's branded as 'higher cost of living' (compared to US) so they stuff around with our promotions and provide us with absurd seller fees almost 15% of total sale.

    • Where are you people getting these figures from? Ebay do charge way too much but from my experience it's nowhere near %15.

      • Really, yet you make no comparison. Try roughly 12.5% INCLUDING postage costs :-(

        • The fees on postage costs add to effectively make the fee on the item possibly greater than 15%. Try a very realistic $50 item with $15 shipping paid by paypal, that's 12.5% + 3.75% = 16.25% !!

      • Go back to eating pizza bro, have you sold anything on ebay?

There's a listing charge (if you go over the quota), seller fees, and also charged by Paypal for accepting money.
Rough cost is ~ 12-15% of total price

        • I have sold lots on ebay. :P
Postage costs are not an excuse to say ebay takes a bigger cut, as you should simply factor in eBay's cut when figuring out your shipping costs. When I'm selling stuff I do shipping cost plus ~15% to cover materials and ebay fees.

Ebay are still a rip-off(albeit a very convenient one). Just not as much as what you're all saying.

  • +1

Back to traditional shopping haggling at retailers.

Sorry eBay and Cashrewards…..you will be both missed.

First, minimum spend went from $100 to $150, and only to get 15% off not 20% off (its not like shops don't jack their price already)

Then eBay decides to cut the recent Xmas 15% off expiry sooner….and now Cash Rewards going to be 1% is pretty much worthless.

I'm guessing this is the last straw having 4.4%.

    Good old days are gone

  • +3

4.4% is no deal for me, can usually find Items Cheaper these day with out ebay :(

    • +1

I totally agree. Fees are ridiculous to begin with that's why these sellers are forced to inflate prices even for just a little bit of profit.

  • +1

Rewards central is 1% + 1% if you are a gold member which makes it better

  • +4

EBay's prices are such a rip off. You can find things cheaper at b&m stores. Only time I used it is when they have a sale.

    • If they dont have any more decent sales there will be so many people who will simply never use it.

  • Hey TA. My last purchase during the celebrate2015 promo wasn't tracked. Help a brutha out! I purchased through eBay a few days prior, as well as different site and both tracked. Seems a case of whenever I use a promo code eBay or CR holds my purchase hostage :(

  • +2

Will there still be promotions from time to time where it gets increased (say to 3% from 1%) or will it be 1% permanently?

  • On a side note, what's the cheapest chinese store?

    Aliexpress?

      • +2

Thanks - just installed this. Even though I don't know why they bother listing DX. I've checked dozens of items and Ali is cheaper every time. They even use the same photos.

Also, why do so many apps require permission for photos? Are they looking for naked pics, or is there a legit reason an app like this needs access to my photos??

        • Was wondering same thing. Also many apps require access to some other unrelated (app) things from my phone. I usually deny and don't install unles I really need the app.

        • +1

          @zapy:
If you have any issue on aliexpress, be very careful about the tricky and not so straight forward resolution process and buttons. Agreeing to a sellers solution means you forgo any garauntee made by aliexpress, who can be pretty unsympathetic. When they carried on like crooks I got a refund by credit card chargeback. Not very pleasant indeed. Though paypal / ebay hasn't entirly been either, especially when having to pay for return shipping for sellers fault.

        • @chyawala: thx for the heads up

  • +1

    Expired already?

    • eBay'd?

    • +2

Not surprising for another ebay related deal to end early.

  • -1

    Whoops didn't read the post

  • I'm so confused - is this going ahead or not? lol. One second it's on, another second it's expired, now it's reversed…is this going to be a random lottery when you login as to whether you're getting 4.4% or 1%?

    • +2

      Starts 6pm AEDT
      4 Jan 6:00pm –6 Jan 3:00pm

It hasn't started yet, someone didn't read those parts and reported it or wanted to make a joke about it ending early.

      • Sorry, trigger-happy moderator - my bad.

  • +3

I'm still waiting for my eBay transaction to be recorded by Cash Rewards from 2.5 weeks back. I trust you guys recorded it, right?

    • Have you emailed them or PM'd TA?

  • i just purchased something 30 minutes ago and now i see this :(((

  • +3

There needs to be a real competitor to ebay. Their practises just keep getting more and more shitty, with their insanely high fees and nonsense like this

    • +1

      thinking just that.

The problem with creating a clone eBay site is that you'll prolly get sued till you go bankrupt.

      • There are other online auction sites.. they are just not that popular or promoted enough (or even dodgier than ebay).

      • Nah - there have been other good sites. www.sold.com.au & oztion (forget what was called before that, but it was getting good then turned rubbish about the time they changed the name). As soon as one starts to get any good, ebay buys them. The dumb site owners see a change at quick cash and sell - and we're back to square one.

        • +1

Well, in their defence, one needs to feed his family before anything else.
Every big company tries and usually succeeds in purchasing startups hence the slow development of ecommerce.

        • @zapy: Definitely - but I can't help think ebay wouldn't offer if it didn't have the potential to bring in much more. I guess it comes down to how much is enough. e.g. I think Colonel Sanders sold Kentucky Fried Chicken for only a couple of million.

        • That sold.com.au page links to some cybersquatter page
At its very early days, oztion had some promise then it turned into utter garbage with tiny customer base and expensive prices anyway.

    • There will be soon. See OpenBazaar.
While it could be used for dodgy & illegal purchases, the developers are really trying hard to make a system that can be used by legitimate buyers and sellers. It has seller ratings, provision for escrow services, etc without a controlling company being able to change the fees at will.

  • 55 minutes to go..FWIW I made a $1.5k purchase on ebay during the 15% off period and tracking came through okay. I used firefox no add-ons on a spare laptop I had lying around.

  • +2

This is great timing! I finally received a reply back to the email I sent eBay on 30/12 in regards to the 15% off promotion. They stated to go ahead and purchase the item(s) I want and they'll manually refund 15% back in ~15-20 business days. 4.4% CR is a neat gift for the hassle of the botched 15% promo!

    • Wow, what were your arguments?
I also had some stuff in basket, but when tried to apply voucher it was over. So that thing is still sitting in basket.
