comes with a USB power cable and 110V power supply

not much use to me then…

    • Hi, in most cases the power supply is not used. Generally the power is taken from the TV's USB port (with the supplied USB power cable).

      • +18

If I'm paying for a power supply, I'd like one I could actually use…

      • +2

I always use the power supply because it switches on my TV automatically which is handy with the computer 7m away

      • I read somewhere most TV USB ports couldn't supply enough current to run the Chromecast 2 (but was enough to run the original Chromecast)

        • I'm running one from an old $200 40" TCL.

    • +1

I have chromecast audio from the US, the included power supply is multi-voltage.

  • +4

OP, you don't reckon it's a bit on the pricey side?

    • +12

I'll wait a few months and pick one up for $49…

      (with an Australian power supply)

      • +2

Went to google training for work a while back and they said the next gen one is going to be around $90 AUD not $49 like the older model
Just FYI they also said it was being released in Aus around Feb/March

        • +7

I was referring to the street price.

        • +1

@jv: If the RRP is $89 it won't you won't see it for $49 for a couple of years. The 1st gen had a street price at around 20-25% off RRP. I think it will be similar with the new one.

        • +4

          @elektron:

          Time, (and OzBargain) will tell…

        • @jv: DSE might have “the last time sale“

      • Maybe I can use the power supply from my Chromecast 1. This price is not attractive though.

      • The power supplies are 110-240v so you can use a $2 adapter or your pliers.

    • +13

This is delivered & atm you can't buy them in Australia & obviously the seller has to make some profit from importing with the low AU>US dollar sooo….$69 is quite fair for the impatient people

      • You are right .. some people here are sooo hard to please .. and usually they are the ones that have the older model ..

  • +1

remind me again what this does that the original chromecast doesn't ?
    not worth paying double IMHO

    • This has 5 GHz AC wifi support making streaming much quicker & more reliable. Atm with the old 2.4 technology quite often the movie/tv show will stutter whilst streaming from your PC if they're big files and in 1080p utilising maximum bandwidth

If you don't have a modem or PC that supports AC wifi then there's no point upgrading except for some additional app support and being able to use your smartphone's internet browser on the tv

      • +4

        @backslashio

Depends, if you are going through walls to your router 2.4 GHz generally will perform better. While 5 GHz is faster it is much poorer at getting a signal through obstacles, hence why virtually every router sold now is dual band.

        • Would have thought ac wifi would come with 4K support to handle more demanding bandwidth. Guess not

        • @Gavman:

Support for 4K depends on the speed you can get which Wireless N (2.4 and 5 ghz) are both capable of.

Wireless N which can work off 2.4 ghz has a max speed of 450 megabits while AC has a max speed of 1300 megabits. Both are more than enough than the 20 megabits required for 4k but Wireless N has a better chance of being used because of the increased range and better signal you generally get.

      • screen mirroring is also much smoother. gen 1 didn't perform that well when screen mirroring web videos, gen 2 is superior (though not perfect like directly streamed youtube content).

        • I have absolutely no issues with screen mirroring including web videos and live streams using a 1st gen Chromecast with a higher-end wireless-N router using either the 2.4k and 5k channel.

Not that I use this feature frequently as 99% of web videos can be cast from Chrome.

        • Screen mirroring worka fine. Its ivieq that stutters only on chromecast even on 100mb/s cable.

You can't stream directly to te device its needs to be connected to a widi network. You can't easily stream to it unless your wifi has internet. It works well at home, but sooo many issues when your away with no or limited access to internet on wifi. Of course you can tuen your phone into a wifi hotspot, but then you can't play content from your phone onto chromecast as you havent got wifi enabled on your phone. Its certainly not worth the new asking price.

      • I wasn't impressed with the first one, low quality picture from all sources. Also tried via ethernet and on decent routers, N66U and AC68U yet no love.

    • This does require 110v power supply or a down converter.

      The original doesnt

    AU$60 delivered

    AU $56.17 delivered
    http://www.fishpond.com.au/Electronics/Google-Chromecast-2nd…

Prices will reduce soon on this gadget. no deal here.

    • +2

Not quite $60. US$47.26, which according to their website is $65.49, or according to XE is $65.77. Still cheaper, but with a delay having to wait for it to arrive from overseas.

The Android Enjoyed one I linked to appears to be local stock. Their product page and shipping info page suggest 5-12 days until delivery (leaves warehouse in 3-7, ships in 2-5 for metro).

Edit after you added second link: Fishpond is the cheapest? Dear god. I didn't think I'd see the day. Local stock too. Their original price of $130 seems as legit as always.

      • -2

        so, no deal

      • +1

        Fishpond shows me $99 delivered

        • +2

There's the Fishpond that I know. They've changed it to $99.97, original price $100.

        • at the same time of OP's post, prices were cheaper elsewhere.

  • When is it get released? Is it officially released in Australia?

    • Not released here as yet

  • I'm looking at picking this up for a projector which has no audio and only a DVI-I in as a modern port (along with VGA). Can I make Chromecast 2nd gen work in this setup?

    • If you hvae a old Chromecast, or can nab a cheap one secind hand You can get a HDMI audio splitter off ebay for $20 then get a DVI to HDMI plug.

Then u can just use RCA to feed an amp

      • Thanks, I was thinking of getting the HDMI audio splitter as well to make it work.

What do you mean by "RCA to feed an amp" - lost me there?

        • Rca is standard white and red audio plugs to feed an amplifier/stereo system

        • the hdmi audio splitter will have RCA outputs, so you can send the audio to an external amp. Or do you prefer to watch the screen with no sound?

  • Got 2 a couple of weeks ago in the last deal, from memory 2 for $88 delivered. The power supply was US however both my tvs powered it from the usb port, or if you have a gen 1 the power supply from that should be fine.

    • I got two in that deal as well. I have plenty of those cheap $1 power adapters lying around so it is no problem for me.

Loving the chromecast, I bought Plex for iOS and Android in total it was cheaper than a movie ticket, and I just fling everything to the TV now.

    • I don't see any further benefit to version 2 other than AC wifi which most people would deem not much of an improvements.. Am I missing something?

      • +1

Another improvement is the flexible HDMI plug/cable. This allows the unit to be easily tucked away behind close wall mounted TVs, the old unit would often protrude or be difficult to fit depending on the TV's USB location.

        • That's cool.

What about new features or performances?

  • I bought 2nd edition one pre-xmas. its powered through USB on tv, cable not necessary

  • Anyone used both, was there a noticeable performance improvement?

    • Yes and yes.

  • +1

I bought one but I could not use it as I didn't know that there are two different versions for the audio only and video/audio (HDMI). I got the one for video/audio (HDMI) which I believe offered here. If anyone is interested to have it for $50 delivered from Brisbane, please pm me. US power plug with dual voltage. Thanks.

    • Ok I screwed up and my sincere apologies for that. I advertised this here for $60 delivered and that's my intended price.

To those who have pm-ed me I will reply an offer. Thanks.

  • Got one. Thanks. it is actually dual voltage so just needed a cheap adapter.
