I considered this deal yesterday, but a quick search on SmartTraveller put me off. Might try again given it's cheaper, but… how safe is India for Westerners/females?

    • +5

if you are relying on smarttraveller for information about countries, then not very. But if not then perfectly fine.

      • +5

        haha perfectly fine…sure

        • +2

yes sure…if you are a novice traveller, or not very accommodating then there is a slew of countries you shouldn't go to.

    • +5

Went to Kozhikode (north of Kochi) a few months back for a wedding with two women from work. Aside from getting gawked at (I don't think it gets many foreign tourists), there didn't seem to be any issues. Standard stuff applies though, don't go down dodgy alleyways in the middle of the night etc.

      • Cochin is far better than Kozhikode.Lot f stuff to explore. Hope u had a gud time there. I guess u work as an RN :)

      • +1

you do some research online, I'll just travel through the place. Having travelled and lived there I can speak confidently. As with any place, don't go down dark alleys late at night. That goes for every city in Australia.

        • -2

I don't think the bus in a big city like New Delhi is considered dark alley or remote place !!!

        • @samehada: Like I said initially, if you get your travel guidance from SmartTraveller then it wont be a safe place for you. I describe people that travel like that are really holidaying and not travelling. Its not good or bad, its just a different strokes for different folks.

People say don't go to Africa, but it is one of the best places I have been. People say don't go to Paris because it is full of thieves, but I haven't had a problem there either. No place is safe without some personal responsibility.

        • -2

@mrmagoober: sorry but despicable criminal is not my personal responsibility, it is their goverment responsibility and with rape crime rates in India is unacceptable.

        • @samehada: Agree. Same as any Aus city where you would see all kinds of people in buses and sometimes no people too!

    • -1

Just don't get on a bus.

    • India has less homicide rate (3.5 per 100K) than US (4.7 per 100K). It is tolerant and well cultured country with so many people living so close and with peace, which is unthinkable else where. Exceptional incidences occur everywhere even in developed countries. You name the country and I will add a link to such incidences there.

  • do have anything special for flights to New Delhi ?

18 cities listed, which is certainly not all of them, but a goodish selection.

        • +2

I've updated the OP with prices to Delhi, if that helps.

        • -4

          @IWantThatFlight:

I was referring to real cheap/ bargain deals. I of course know that there are heaps of flights to Delhi and Mumbai. But, there are almost never cheap flight deals to those cities. The deals for those cities that you just posted above are not even close to the ones originally listed in the main post. I hope I have been able to express myself better now.

Just compare - $450 return to India (Cochin) with $800 just one-way (Delhi/ Mumbai) on average.

        • +5

@virhlpool: OP isn't running an airline, just an airfare website. Write to the airlines if you want 'cheap flight deals' to Mumbai/Delhi. But they'll probably tell you how some routes are more expensive than others based on various many factors - airport tax, passenger tax, profitability etc.

        • @rohanp16: Agree. OP can't divert those cheap flights (to Cochin) to Delhi or Mumbai way but, for sure, can throw some insights. And that's good enough.

        • +2

@virhlpool: there are some real c**** on this site now. I for one appreciate all the deals OP has posted, including this one

        • +1

@virhlpool: True, and OP did. You made a statement that the two biggest cities weren't included in the post and OP, being a airfare comparison website, commented with links to Delhi and Mumbai.

However, after that you went on saying that you were 'referring to real cheap/bargain deals' and how there 'are almost never cheap flight deals to those cities'. That isn't OP's role, it's the airline's role. If you want insights as to why there aren't deals to those cities there are lots of forums and websites where you can read about how the airline industry works.

Not taking a personal dig, just seeing things logically.

    • Oh ahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahha
"take the poo to the loo"
because they actually need a govt message to stop shitting in the street, doorways and railway tracks.
That is just so disgusting. Also no toilet paper so……….
Just, dont, ever, shake, left hands

      • Once I was taking a walk in the park and accidentally stepped on dog poop. I just wiped off my shoe with tissue paper, but the whole day the shoe kept smelling of poop. I wonder why.

        • I once had a stop over in Delhi.
The entire city smelled of poo. Old poo, new poo, rotting poo. Poo everywhere.
          I wonder why.

        • @King Tightarse:

I once had a stop over in Delhi.

Instant fragrance de rotting poo, hot urine, cold vomit, a million sweatty lice infested armpits 10 million unwiped bums and another 10 million left hands that did the smearing. I smelled decomposing matter; animal vegetable and plastic. I even saw a puddle of vomit get up and hurl on the sidewalk.
          Beautiful place.

        • -2

@King Tightarse: 50% of the population poo in the street or in the rivers or wherever they can, 600 million people dont know how to use a toilet haha

smells same as sydney buses then… wonder why

nose always burns when I step on the bus….

        • @King Tightarse:

        • @Makoto: Agree with what you said about Sydney buses. Some of them do.

      • +1

Annoys me quite a bit when uninformed people make uninformed statements showing how much their IQ is. I think the whole intelligent world knows how using water is much more hygienic then using toilet paper.

If someone dill doesn't get it, I'll provide some example scenarios

      From wiki about kerala(Cochin):

Kerala, a state in India, is a bizarre anomaly among developing nations, a place that offers real hope for the future of the Third World. Though not much larger than Maryland, Kerala has a population as big as California's and a per capita annual income of less than $300. But its infant mortality rate is very low, its literacy rate among the highest on Earth, and its birthrate below America's and falling faster. Kerala's residents live nearly as long as Americans or Europeans. Though mostly a land of paddy-covered plains, statistically Kerala stands out as the Mount Everest of social development; there's truly no place like it.

for the first timers to India, make sure bring a hard (printed) copy of air ticket/iternary with you because will be checked about 12 times between check in and on board when flying out.

    • +6

      That's an outright lie.

      • +2

Find your comment insulting if this is what your intention is.

  • +5

It's weird, the moment a deal on flights to India come up, all the negs come in with comments.
How about you just ignore the deal and look through the rest eh?!

    • Absolutely! India offers one of the best job markets and the highest career growth in the world at this moment. On the other hand, some countries have so sluggish job markets that people struggle to even get basic office jobs, forget about career progress.

      • -2

if it offers such amazing career prospects and great jobs why do they all flock to other countries never to return? lol

        • +7

Do you know what percentage of them flock to other countries for living and how many prosper there? If you aren't an Indian or Chinese, you can probably not even visualize the number. 65% of current Indian population is below 35 years, which is a demographic dividend by itself - you would know why if you know a bit of economics. Only two or three large Indian companies probably have as many employees as the total employees of a whole state in some countries put together. And you would probably not even know how many expats go to India for a better career. Indian education system is one of the most competitive and reputed in the world. Check the ratio of admitted students vs country's educated population in Ivy League and other competitive unis of the world for India and compare it with other countries. You would know what I mean. Unis in India don't let students in just basis exams like IELTS for example. Their entrance tests are some of the toughest in the world with a very heavy emphasis on maths/science and aptitude.

BTW: I don't intend to say that India doesn't have any negatives. However, these are the positives that really matter in one's life - specially at a younger age when the career takes shape.

        • -5

@virhlpool: if its so wonderful go there and dont come back… oh yeah, everyone wants to escape the place, not stay there

        • +2

@Makoto: But, that won't help you understand India any better. Instead, it will be a good idea for you to go there and see everything yourself. Ignorance will be quickly fixed. Secondly, it's not about the country being wonderful or beautiful - these are facts just like every other country would have. Some pros and some cons. These are pros and they really matter in one's life. Jobs and opportunities for the youth do matter. Right?

        • -4

@virhlpool: youre the one talking about how thriving and amazing opportunities exist in Indian job markets

which is a load of rubbish

        • +1

          @virhlpool:

Unis in India don't let students in just basis exams like IELTS for example. Their entrance tests are one of the toughest in the world with a very heavy emphasis on maths/science and aptitude.

So you are saying that the drongos end up here as they don't make the cut to get into any Indian university?

        • @Makoto: Do you even know what's going on in the world? Which economies are doing well, which are not? Which are the biggest consumer markets for multinational companies? Start-up scenarios across the world? Best paid jobs for young graduates? You need to read, mate! You can't sit on the couch and tell everything "a load of rubbish". And if this much info abt India surprised you, then what will happen when you will know get to know a lot more. Once you can digest things abt India, start reading about China as it might be even more eye-opening and quite difficult to believe if you never knew anything about it. And don't forget to learn about how the manufacturing boom in China uplifted the life of millions in China, as the IT boom did it for India.
