  • How to get it unlocked ?

    • Is this legit free unlock? http://www.unlockphonetool.com/how-to-unlock-microsoft-lumia…

      Has anyone used it?

      • Im afraid to even try…

    • Message Bagman. He helped me out with my Nokia 530.

    • +2

Ozbargain's friend bagman unlocks it here.

      http://www.unlockit.codes/servicedetails.php?id=39&type=imei

      • $25 just to unlock it.

      • +1

        Bagman's service is impeccable!
but if you're already with optus, the online chat works really well for unlocking for free. I got mine done just before Christmas.

      • Just got my Lumia 640 $99 Optus locked Mobile unlocked by Matt at Unlockit.codes.
Was told that he gets about 80% success rate on Optus Lumia Mobiles, which is far higher than other online unlockers.
Worth every $. Dick Smith were selling unlocked 640's at $279. Do the math. There is a real bargain here.

  • Dicksmith have the same offer but its online only, save you time to go to the store :)

    • only if it gets delivered by them

    • +5

you may as well donate $99.00 to them lol

    • I'd rather have a warranty that is worth something

      • You don't think Microsoft's warranty is worth anything?

        • Fair point. But I'd still prefer to be able to walk in to a physical store and get a refund than deal with shipping to the manufacturer. I got this phone from DS delivered for the same price and am happy with it but kind of wish I had waited.

  • +4

But no guarantee you will get it online if you buy it from dick smith

    • Buying online from Dick Smith means nothing. They just sell things that do not have stock I guess just to keep your money for a couple of weeks and then return it without even telling you.

  • +1

This will work with Virgin, and is a great phone for this price

  • Not 4g?

    • nvm, checked optus site. It is.

Would this be better than Telstra Buzz

  • +2

It's tremendous value even at $140. Using it now on Amaysim.

  • +4

    Good phone & good deal.
Hopefully win 10 will be available for it soon.

  • I bought an unlocked microsoft lumia 640 from david jones (not the telco branded ones) for $94, the guy behind the counter was convinced it was an error. Still sold it to me.

    • Can you post a copy of the receipt?

      • I can. But I don't think it will help you. I think it was a price error.

  • An AT&T-locked phone was selling for $39 USD direct from Microsoft US not long ago (back up now). Amazing value for a soon to be Windows 10 phone.

  • +1

Also available at Dick Smith instore if you can find stock

  • maybe this is OW's response to a few price matches over the new year when DS had them on sale - anyhow I can vouch for the phone as I bought one for my wife (to replace an aging 920 with crook battery). Put W10 on it via 'Insider' app. It has a great screen, removable battery, can add MicroSD card.

    • Most definitely a response. I had two price matched/beaten

  • +3

OK this is wierd - live chat with Optus to unlock above phone and they say it's unlocked???? not confident at all.

Oswin D:As I check the IMEI number its says it already unblocked so you can use the hand set in New Zealand with the sim for New Zealand  and you need chose the network there manually..
You:so why does it say locked to Optus - I don't want to get to NZ to find out I will have trouble with a locked handset
Oswin D:As I told you the phone is unblocked you use it that's is the reason I check with the IMEI number..
You:So does this mean I can use a Telstra SIM?
    Oswin D:Yes you can..

    • +2

Have you got a different SIM to test?

I just tried a Telstra SIM and mine is locked.

      • +2

Yep I have a Telstra SIM at home - will test tonight - let you know - of course it has to be locked so I am completely confused by Optus live chat operator - we'll see

    • Worth getting a free sum sent out to check.think lebara still do free sim cards

    • Debo, Oswin the tool from optus checked if it is "Unblocked" not if it is "unlocked". These are two different things.
Yes the phone will work in NZ because it is unblocked, but for a non-optus sim to work, it must also be unlocked, so any carrier sim can work.

  • It locked. I purchased this phone today and tried another sim card. The OS is asking me for an unlock code.

edit: awaiting for my unlock code via Bagman link

  • +1

    Thanks for the update, shame

I read on Whirlpool some people have had success getting Optus to unlock it by phoning them and saying they need it unlocked to take it overseas

    Worth a try ?

    • +2

that's exactly what I tried - except I was communicating with some Optus dipstick via Live Chat

      • +1

ok pls let us know how it goes when you try a non-Optus SIM although I think we've already had the answer from ChickenAdobo

        • +1

as we all expected the Telstra SIM did not work. Annoyed at the misinformation given by Optus. Glad I copied the live chat transcript so will live chat tomorrow and paste the entire thing in, and say guys what's all this about, and please resolve my original issue "My wife is going to NZ and will need to use a SIM there…"

        • @debo: well stuff a duck but I just got an unlock code from Optus and phone is unlocked. Took some real hustle and several live chat sessions. Ultimately it came down to the IMEI not being in their database - I think that is why I could not get the service done by bagman - this also was the issue when I tried the Optus web unlocker "This mobile device is not a locked Optus prepaid mobile device. " - so they needed to get a code from Microsoft. Not sure if it was necessary or not but they also wanted me to activate the phone with the Optus SIM that came in the box temporarily so the process could be kicked off.

  • How much is the unlock fee?

  • Is the microsoft platform better than android??

    • +3

In some ways yes, in that it's light weight and will run respectably on anything, and Ms has made an effort to make it usable.

There are simply very few decent apps, and many new apps don't make it to the platform until way later, and the only option is usually a b rate version of the same thing by someone who's trying to take advantage of the gap (or 10 b rate options). At least that's how it was when I was using it a while ago.

All this means if you want a cheap phone that does the core stuff right and has a good camera and don't care too much about apps then it's a great choice

      • +2

That is a spot on summary from Jackson. Windows phones are super useable, stable OS, quick, and best of all cheap ($100!!). But there is the 'app gap'. For core phone functionality and the main apps then OK but some bank apps for example are just not there. But you can use the web browser, just pin a tile to the web URL.

        • +2

The app gap also translate to poor performance in certain apps. I notice that often with my 930,some apps just load slower than they should.

I tested a few apps the other day against budget Android.

          Spotify load time
          930 ~6 seconds
          Fit ~3 seconds

          Flipboard
          930 ~6 seconds
          Fit ~3 seconds

          Messenger
          930 ~5 seconds
          Fit ~ 3 seconds

It surprised me people always saying how fast Windows phone are, I think the smooth UI and slow animations fool them into thinking the phone is quick.

    • +1

my wife uses them, the despite the decent build quality and doable OS, and awesome microsoftwares, what kills Windows phone is lack of apps. lot of bank still dont have windows phone apps. government department including medicare and centrelink don't have it. Insurance company don't have, you can't even acess orginal you tube app, and that sucks big time.

  • Does this have an upgrade to Windows 10 mobile available?

    • +1

The official release is not out yet, but if you install the "windows insider" app you can use the preview version of windows 10. It looks damn slick and runs pretty smooth. A little bit buggy here and there which is to be expected, but a nice step up from 8.1.

  • +1

@NotRobot In terms of Apps - Only thing that does not sucks for WP is YouTube app, believe it or not TubeCast and myTube are million times better app than official Youtube app on iOS I have iOS, Andriod and WP all, and WP app wins by miles. Official Google YouTube on iOS is sucker, you can't even download videos for offline viewing. And To be honest, WP third party Instagram is better than iOS too.

    • +1

Mytube is awesome, best YouTube app on any platform imo.

  • 500 Million apps on iPhone still none for OzBargain. WP has edge here :)

Dilbert app that is awesome on WP is dud on iOS

When you go to unlock the phone through the Optus unlock site, it may show as not being a locked Optus prepaid device-however the phone will ask for an unlock code with a non-Optus SIM inserted.

I discovered that Optus has to request an unlock code from the manufacturer for many prepaid devices-so try contacting Optus & provide the IMEI number.

Sometimes I do this via an enquiry form on the Optus website, or via live chat.

State that the phone is asking for an unlock code even though Optus online chat says the phone is unlocked-Optus may then pass on your details including the IMEI, in the case Microsoft who will then give Optus an unlock code to provide to you within 5-15 business days.

I've been able to get unlock code for many Optus locked phones that way.

  • That way too long. Bagman took me next day to unlock for 25 bucks. I think it was worth it

    • Wow, only 24 hours to get the unlock codes. That was quick.
I just paid $25 dollars + 5% surcharge on that website last night and eagerly waiting for my code since.
Checked 5 mins ago but no unlock code as yet. I hope he can unlock it for me.

      • Got the unlock code from Bagman and successfully unlocked this Lumia 640 in less than 24 hours turn around. Great job Bagman.

        • what am I doing wrong? My request though unlockit has been rejected??? Number not known? I double checked the IMEI it is correct.

        • @debo: did you get a response from Bagman?

        • @he88388: I sent an email through to them - not sure if it's Bagman it's just the website

        • @debo: I got rejected too, but my money from unlock it codes was refunded.

  • Anyone have any luck unlocking this phone with optus as a new customer?

  • If anyone is interested, Fairy Meadow (2500) has stock.

  • Pricing has gone up to $129 from Officeworks

  • It is back up to $179 today at Officeworks

  • Yes,he88388, see an earlier post.

    • yes he - see a reply of mine above from yesterday - if your 640 is in same category as mine then the optus web unlock form will reject it - I would try that first (no charge to try the form to see if Optus recognise the phone or not) - if it is not recognised then you might have a chance with Optus live chat saying the online thing does not work

  • Thanks OP
Great capable phone, I have been using it for a few weeks now. Unlocked for free by Optus. I didn't like the win8 interface so upgraded to win10 preview with the Windows Insider App. I had to reset the phone as it was a bit buggy. After that all is fine - takes a bit of tweaking of the settings to make it work perfectly but worth the effort.
