  • Yeah, decent deal… any catches?

    • +17

Yeah - bolded words may strike randomly, if that's a concern.

      • Well, better watch out then…

I just switched to this plan last week - the big differientiator for us was the international allowance to call anywhere (PNG is important to us).

It's worth noting that their call rates are much better now than they were too - eg png was $25/min - now $1.80 - so the $300 is actually useful.

Unused credit / data rolls over too - which might be handy.

Roaming is poor value but at least it is an option (and I usually opt for local sim or wifi only anyway)

  • Hmm.. was considering this or the unlimited plan for $45/month from optus that includes an iphone5…
I dont really (when in rome)need the data or the international calls… just an ok phone and lots of calls/text.

Wonder if there's a simple way to get that extra 2gb since I'm already with virgin - the long way would be porting number over another network and then back lol. They honestly should make it for existing customers as well (no love for us)…

    • +1

I'm in the same boat buddy - will either port out and back in or simply move to optus $50/10gb plan.

    • +1

My wife was on optus based tpg - we ported her to a vodafone prepaid sim and then to Virgin which worked out ok in the end.

      • How long did the process take overall?

        • +1

2 days more or less. I think it would have been quicker if I had held off a bit before requesting the Virgin port! They got a bit confused and I had to escalate it.

Vodafone sims are $1 delivered from their website and Virgin let you operate with a temporary number while you wait for the port.

      • Thanks for the info mate - I'll likely take the same route.

      • Did you have to fund the prepaid SIM as well?

        • I just ordered a $1 sim from Vodafone online (didn't pay for express but they sent it express..). I activated it and was able to call it but it had 0 credit.

No problems porting out having never added any credit.

I'm an existing customer and I had no problems changing from my old $40 sim only plan to this new one with 7gb data.
All I did was chat them up online and ask for it, they said no worries.
      Ask and you shall get

      • Sweet as! I'll give them a call tomorrow. Thanks mate

        • +2

My advice, try on https://www.virginmobile.com.au/contact-virgin-mobile/ first, Click the Service Team chat, you're more likely to get it done + the wait time is so much shorter than on the phone

        • +1

          Yay :)

@AlanHB: Reap the most value from Virgin Mobile, every month I spend about 10 minutes or less just simply asking whether they have any loyalty deals that they can chuck on my account, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. But try to squeeze the most value from this as you can

        • Thanks for the tip mate, will do.

        • @coco1458: Since chat isn't up yet I tried calling them and they said all they can do is 4gb. Might have to wait for sales chat which is quite annoying - I really see no difference doing it over the phone or in a chat box. Been with these jokers for over 10 years and they always fail to see common sense over technicalities.

        • +2

@watty: I feel your pain dude - sometimes it seems like the phone guys are either extremely limited in their powers or simply don't understand that if you grant extra benefits to existing customers they are more likely to remain customers.

I'll wait for service chat too. Fingers crossed.

        • @AlanHB: Did you get it?

        • +1

@realfancyman: Hey dude - couldn't get through to service chat on Sunday so got impatient/impulsive and went for the Optus $40/10GB 12 month plan as recommended by Roguewolf below. A little silly perhaps but meh, both are good deals.

        • +2

@AlanHB: Nothing silly really, the extra 3 gigs warrants the 12 month commitment imo. I would have went with yours but I've been with virgin for a decade or so and I'm looking to jump on the iPhone 7 next year hence I went against Optus.

  • Can the international credit be used towards calling mobiles in other countries?

    Can't find the info anywhere.

    • +1

Yes - it can so long as you are in Australia

    • +1

I had the same question before on prepaid - it appears they don't differentiate between mobiles and landlines - hence mobile to mobile call to the UK on the Simple prepaid plan is the same cost as M2M within Australia - 15c per min.

Other plans, other prices - for no obvious reason.

  • The Optus $40 10gb deal is still going until 31/1/16, or the $40 voda deal, both 12month commitments, much better value imo

    • Could you please provide links to these $40 plans? I can't seem to find them.

      • +1

Optus deal expired the 4th but there still offering it until the 31st just ask them on chat about it

        voda deal

        • +1

Cheers - good to know the plan options are also good.

        • @AlanHB: …

        • +1

I think your comment may be directed at cloudie9 :)

        • +1

          @AlanHB: think your right lol

    • But I'm waiting for iPhone 7, don't want to lock into contract without phones!

      • @cloudie9 you can still upgrade to the iphone 7 or other plans if you locked in with voda or optus, there will be no payout you just have to stick with that carrier

  • +1

Telstra $40 for 7GB deal was the best of these $40 plans that have been popping up for the last few months, although it was a 12mth contract. Free Apple Music for 12 months sealed the deal for me.

    • agreed, actually 8gb for the first 3 months with the extra sim card (though gotta remember to cancel the "free" sim card before 3 months)

only 500 calls Max per month included if that matters to anyone as well

  • +2

The big difference is the international allowance to anywhere - if you don't make use of it, the other providers might work out better.

  • So this is pretty much identical to the Amaysim $44.90 unlimited plan, but with extra 2gb data? Same 4g network. Looks like great deal.

I wonder if this will prompt Amaysim to compete.

  • -1

Thinking about porting out? Grab yourself a free SIM.

    • +1

You have to port out to a non optus network.

      • Ah. Bother. My mistake.

  • Boost $40 UNLTD is still available and offers good value with 3gb then 2gb every weekend and it's on the Telstra network.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/217072

But as previous, check the international rates to compare if that the deciding factor.

  • This is actually a $50 Plan

    trickbyvirgin

Plz Read Below, got it from The Fine Print of Virgin mobile

    http://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/Nano-SIM-Kit-Starter-Pac…

$10 off: available when you’re eligible for, and sign up to, a $50 SIM Plan with the switch/upgrade bonus data from above. You’ll receive a $10 credit (not redeemable for cash) each month until you cancel or change plans. This offer can be used with the “50% Off First Month’s Access Fee” and bonus data offers we also mention here but cannot be used with other special offers unless stated otherwise. Offer ends 11 February 2016.

    • What do you consider the "trick" to be?

    • Yeah they have a slash going through $50 and $40 is written next to it. They aren't hiding the fact that it was a $50 plan and at the end of the day you will only pay $40 a month for the life of the plan.

  • +1

Can confirm you DO NOT need to changeover to another service provide IE. Telstra to receive the Bonus Data (7GB total), %50 off first month and also receive the $10 credit ($50 down to $40 each month)

Just call them and ask for it.. I am with Dodo (optus) and CSR said no problems (they want their commission) so will get it done.took 10mins to sign up and approve.

Also data rolls over each month..

    Best deal out there ATM…

    • Wow you got lucky, I was told it was a straight up no. The best I could get was 4gb :(

  • Still get charged $40 and they return the 50% in credit not cash. But nonetheless thanks for the post.

  • +2

Online service chat pulled through in the end for me. Got the 7gb, thanks for the deal op! :)

    • +1

I'm glad you got your 7gb :) Don't forget your 1GB Guvera bonus, it sure helps boost monthly rollover :)
Online Service chat always pulls through for me

      • Yup I've been doing that since it began, wonder when it ends though? I remember early 2016 or something like that.

        • End of April 2016, hopefully they'll extend it or have something that's better

        • @coco1458: Ah sweet a few more months, i'll probably won't even use that much that it would matter tbh, though my train rides to uni will be less boring :D

        • +1

          @watty:
more Youtubing and browsing the web, 7GB is heaps but why not make it 8GB right :)

  • Thanks heaps. Current Virgin customer and got the 7GB via online chat.

  • Has anyone tested to see if the 2GB extra with Presto works with this plan?

    http://www.virginmobile.com.au/presto/?i_cid=HM_Bott_1_1

  • Current Optus customer and got 7gb via online chat no problems.

  • 7GB and $40 is a bit too much i wish there is prepaid 4G service for around $22-25 give me few hundreds calls with 2.5-3GB data

    • Virgin had a deal two years ago, gave me $19 a month for $450 calls/texts + 2.5GB data - Haven't seen anything quite like it since

      • i will glady pay $20 for that combo, Mr Bee :)

      • My mum is on that plan but only gets 200mb of data. You sure it was 2.5 gigs?

        • +1

Yep, bonus data offer for online/phone orders

  • Great deal! existing Virgin customer upgrade to 7GB bonus via online chat.
The Rep was reluctant to offer the extra 2GB but gave it on the basis I switched to Virgin over a year ago from TPG.

    • Yeah 7gb if you asked for it via online chat and they'll happily do it; they would not offer anything over the phone for some reason…
