Optus $40/month SIM Plan 12 MTH Contract 10GB Data, Unlimited Text/MMS & Unlimited Calls

2060

NEW SERVICES ONLY

Optus BYO $40 SIM PLAN 12 Months Contract (Was $60)

10GB Data

Unlimited Calls

Unlimited Text/MMS (Selected International Countries)

300 Mins International Calls (Selected International Countries)

BYO Phone

Price will stay at $40 per month after the 12 months contract has finished, until you change or cancel your plan.

The 12 Month Contract is a bummer as you will be locked with Optus for 12 months. However, its hard to complain at $40 for 10GB data a month.

Try online chat if you are an existing customer, and see what they can do.

Mod note 9/1: This deal originally expired on the 4/1/16, however a user has reported it is unofficially still available until 31/1/16. To obtain the deal ask for it on live chat (may also work in store). Thanks Roguewolf

      10gb on this plan.

What I mean is.. how much porn does one need on the go?

        • You tell us.

  • +3

This would be a nice upgrade from my current optus plan 8GB for $50/month.. Dunno what to make of the 12 month lock in though

    • I'm on that one as well but I think the freedom of no contract is worth $10 per month

    • +2

Same. Definitely considering this deal though, 12 months isn't that long and chances are I'll be on Optus for the next year anyways.

      • +5

Just think of it as 10 months, because you save $10/month. So the last two months pay for themselves in savings.

  • +1

It's for new services NOT just new customers ie you can be an existing customer and bring in a new service and get this deal.

    • +2

You are correct, sorry should have been more clear in description. As long as you bringing in a new service (new number) into your existing Optus account.

  • I'm on my last 24th month contract with Voda and I'm hanging out for a good plan on a Note 5 handset with whoever by Xmas.

    • Buy the phone outright and grab a SIMO?

      • I guess this is a no brainer given how good a deal this is.

  • What happens after 12 months?

    • +1

You can continue with same price.

      • The $60 7GB month to month plan is "50% off 6 months access fee". What happens after 6 months? Can I bring my number to Optus with this deal?

        • +1

get this one instead.. this is beter if u don't mind the contract.

  • Just spoke to a rep, price is for new customers only. Existing customers can get the same price if you change your phone number to a new one. Or to keep you existing number the price is $60 for 10GB and same inclusions.

    • +17

Time to Port out and come back.

  • +1

OK, I'll finally leave LC's 2gb plan for this! How do I go about canceling and porting the number across? I've been avoiding to deal with LC this whole time..

Do I just port and it's done?

    • +2

Don't need to tell LC anything. Just start the application.

It's quite a big upgrade to go from 2GB to 10GB though.

    • don't cancel, just port.

      • Do I need to tell LC? How do I know they won't double change me?

        • +2

They probably will double charge regardless.

        • they will probably charge u for the last month. check the T&C's. they might have some bullshit clause like u have to pay upto 28 day after porting

    • Be careful or you will get stung!

Follow the steps on their website.

I just ported mid month and I had to pay for that portion of the month which is fine, but they also portioned my data to match but I had already used most of the months data…..so they charged me for excess data use…..around $220 from memory. Nice trick.

      • +2

The TIO would have solved that for you.

        • At the time I posted on whirlpool asking for advice and help but was told it was my own fault for not reading the fine print….they can be helpful bunch at times….

  • Doesnt look like you can go from pre-paid optus to this deal either…

Anyone been able to go from optus pre-paid to this plan?

    • +2

      There's an easy solution:

      POPI.

    • Placed an order but I guess it's going to be cancelled. I'm with pre-paid (was with Woolworths mobile). Their loss, I'll keep my $26 for 5GB and 45 days plan. Port out and in is a hassle, and if they cancel the deal meanwhile I would have lost my grandfathered pricing.

  • +1

if you don't want to lock in contract, this deal seems to be cheaper and more flexible. Unlimited international calls to selected countries too

    • +5

True, however the deal you have linked is only $35 for 6 months, after which the price will go back to $70. This deal is permanent $40 until you cancel/change plan with a minimum of 12 months. Both have their ups and downs, go with the one works out best for you ;)

      • +3

Six months are enough to do the switch, who knows if there are other better deals during 12 months.

  • +2

If you with Vodafone & can't be botherd porting there's a high chance they will match it, friend got 12month plan 6gb & first 2months unlimited gb, unlimited calls etc for $36 yesterday, by speaking with retentions team, just mention or send the link on chat if the Optus deal & say your about to leave, likely they will also match Optus 6s deals to but at current sim prices worth just buying outright
You can also add a phone to your sim only plan with monthly payments which only cost the cost of the handset rrp

    • +1

yer i was going to move from Telstra > Vodafone 12 Month (6Gb plan) mainly for the 6Gb + 2 months data workout + $5 international roaming.. min spend $480 and then this comes along with a whopping 10Gb for same min spend $480 (although no data workout + travel pack is $10 per day and way less data).

If Voda could match data it would be a no brainer.. but 10Gb is very enticing !

      • +2

I've been with Vodafone for half a year now, haven't had any problems. The best thing is the $5 roaming!

  • would like to move to this deal (and happy to be locked in for 12 months) but cant be bothered porting out and back in from my $50 8gb plan…or maybe I can. will have a chat to an optus rep tonight.

    • You might be able to convince them that they should chuck in some free GB as a good gesture for staying with Optus :)

      • loyalty sadly means nothing these days. its all good, ive got a few Vodafone SIM cards floating around that I'll port out to and back in if I have to. just an unnecessary inconvenience (will likely need to buy new data sharing SIMs too).

        • +5

No! Customer loyalty means something in utilities. The more loyal the more you missed out better deal.

        • Also ported out from the $50/8gb deal.
$8 charge for Post out fee

        • @albanyson: Oh so they let you do it? I had no luck when on the online chat last night. Was told to call the retentions team…

        • @xyron:
No,they also refused to ograde me to a better deal.
So ported to Telstra freedom plus on a $30 plan ($8 purchase)
Extra 5gb bonus, and now looking for next best deal.
They didn't care that I said I'd leave.
Just charged me an 8 fee for doing so.

        • @albanyson: yeah I just ported out to a $5 Vodafone SIM that I picked up from kmart a few months ago (I knew they would come in handy eventually!) - will loiter on Vodafone for a few days and port back in on the 10gb deal.

just a bit annoying because I use optus data sharing sims in my iPad and work laptop so they'll be out of action for the next day or two, but worst case scenario I can just tether if I really need access.

        • @xyron:
I'm not keen to be locked in for 12 months.
Mighty go the optus 10gb, $70 month, half price for 6 months($35) and see what happens after that.
In 6 months there no doubt will be a good deal floating around.
In the interim, $10 for 3 months on Amaysim is arriving and will see me through. Even if it's just for the 5 gb mobile data and if used for a month for $10.
(already spent the 30 telstra credit at the Google play store.

  • So what is this "data pool" thing? Not tethering is it?? Something I take for granted and use all the time..
Also does anyone know if the data is 24/7 use, I think some of Telstra's plans are peak and off peak, maybe its the new thing for mobiles…

    • +4

data pool is where you have multiple phone plans attached to the one optus account, each account holder can access data as if it was "pooled" between all users. so if you had 3 plans on the one account with 10gb each, one user could use all 30gb while the other two use none, or one could use 25gb while one uses 3gb and the other uses 2gb.

optus also, rather handily, sells $5 data SIMs which allow you to use the data pool with no extra ongoing costs for those extra SIMs (i.e. the $5 fee is once off only, as opposed to Telstra who charges $5 per month for a data sharing SIM).

      • +1

Just to clarify, you don't need to have multiple plans to data pool. You could share your data across multiple devices with just the one account. I do this with my iPad by purchasing the $5 data sim to share the data from my single mobile account.

  • +1

    Just signed up to telstra………

  • +3

Seems like higher data allowances will become the norm in the new year

  • +1

Just spoke to a rep, if you port over a number from another telco and bundle it to your Optus home broadband account, you'll be able to get the plan for $30 instead of $40

  • +2

Don't forget it will come down to $30 if your an optus broadband customer. Unfortunately Vodafone no longer allow early upgrades after 21 months still have to pay $70 and they charge an early termination fee. They are turning real tight. Can't wait to give them the big heave ho. Any idea how long this plan is on for?

    • +1

"Offer ends Jan 4 2016" on the website.

Looks like Optus called Telstra's bluff on the 7gb plan.

    • +1

You have 34 days before it expires

      • Thanks, might be worth it for me to pay out my last 2 months of my plan to get this deal I have a note 3 and it's in pristine condition. $30 (Optus Broadband) for 10gb is going to be very hard to beat in the future.

        • Stay with Vodafone for another month before you switch to Optus, because you will be paying minimum monthly payment for 3-4 months anyway. Just switch in last couple of days.

  • Anyone tried threatening their current phone provider to see if they'll match this deal to keep you?

    • no hope with Telstra, you can give Voda a try

    • Spoke to a voda rep, they said they couldn't budge on their 12 month plans

    • Be interested to see if Virgin could match.

      • I have asked this question to their social media. Will post when get response

        • Got a reply saying they don't price match competitors.

        • @wheresthebeef:

Weird, because previously they price matched data for me when I threaten to leave for Voda. However I was upgrading from a lower plan to a higher plan so maybe that factors in as well.

Also note I had to call up 3 times before I got a guy that would do it for me.

  • does optus automatically top up your data if you run out? voda does this and it pisses me off. go over 1mb and get charged $10…

    • Yeah they do, it's $10 for 1GB

  • I was looking at the Optus mobile broadband plans and this is a better deal. 2gb more for $5 less.

  • It's nice to see more data on these plan's.

  • Can anyone explain the process of porting out and then in please?

    • Sign up to a prepaid/no contract SIM on another provider. They'll port you over within a few hours. I don't know how long you'd have to wait, but you then simply join back with Optus on this deal.

  • +6

Just on a call with Voda, got 2 numbers that i want to move over and they both on sim only plan 35/month with 3gb. They matched it to optus plus extra 1gb. So I'm now paying 40/month no locked in contract, 11gb, unlimited national and international to 10 slected country plus 120mins to any other country.

  • Shoild I sign up to this first then sign up to broadband to get $10 discount, or the other way around?

  • +1

I was on the $50 8 gig sim only plan. Was just on Optus chat, told them the plan I was on, and that I wanted to change. They just changed me without a problem. Too easy!

    • really? I was on chat as well and then got a call from the agent. She advised system does not allow to change to this plan for exisiting customer. How did you do that? Are you sure?

      • +5

I spoke with online chat earlier, they told me they couldn't switch me to this deal at this price unless I opt for a new number, otherwise I could get this deal for $60 a month.

So much for wanting to reward your current customer base.

      • Well I was given a plan change reference number and told my next bill will be on the new plan. Guess I'll wait and see what happens then.

        • Ditto, i'm on optus $50 8GB. Called Optus, advised I would move to Telstra if they didn't switch me to the 10gb new customer only plan and apparently Optus customer retention will call me today. It's a tough decision in my world, as I do notice Telstra is a better network, but i kinda like (and use) the international minutes from Optus.

    • I'd appreciated some proof. I just tried and they said no.

    • I also want to know whether your plan actually changed in your account.

      • Not yet. I'll find out in 9 days I guess.

        • TBH I dont think your plan has been changed to this plan. If there was system limitation, there would be no way for agent to bypass it.

        • @amsaini15:

Maybe. Odd that he didn't say anything at all about that in the chat. He tried to get me on cable too by saying it can come down to $30 per month the. And they certainly pulled up all my details from my current plan.

        • +1

          @amsaini15:

Ever think that the agent is just giving you a line to fob you off? Happens all the time in sales.

I mean having a system limitation on changing peoples plans sounds pretty far fetched tbh. That is what they do for a living.

        • @serpserpserp:

Maybe (hopefully) I just got lucky. I did receive their confirmation email on my plan change though

        • +1

          @Fybre:
          See? No system issue.

I love how people just would prefer to say people are liars instead of challenging the corporation. I never trust anything a person says in a call centre.

    • Tried the same. Tried a couple times. No budge on the $50—8gb deal to this one.
Ported out and now picking the best of the latest deals.

  • +5

Good deal! But I just convinced vodafone to give me 13gb of data, with unlimited calls and text and 10 countries unlimites calls for $35 :) (thanks to this deal)

Used my existing loyal credit to bring it down from $45 and also get an additional 1gb of data. Not that I need it.

    • just using their online chat help ?

oh and also is this under contract for 12/24mths?

      • +1

Sorry mate. I should have clarified that too. I was on a 24 month sim only contract with them for the last 5 months. They simply let me downgrade my plan to the new cap they have and also gave me the double data (its available only for online signups on their website on the $45 24 month contract). I was paying $40 a month for 6gb of data with all those perks I mentioned above. Now I am getting 12+1gb for $35 (I have a $10 loyalty credit for quite some time now)

  • Which provider is the best option for temporary Port out and come back. Any suggestions?

    • I believe Amaysim have a $1 pay as you go plan. Port to that and back to Optus and max you can be charged is $1 (given you don't use the phone while on Amaysim)

  • +1

Food for thought for those on Optus $50/month rolling plans. I have just purchased a $30 Telstra prepaid sim with extra 5GB on activation.

$5 with Cashrewards or $10 at Woolies, will port back to Optus after 28 days when the Telstra credit expires……just in time for 4th Jan 2016 cut off to sign up as a 'New' Customer.

  • Thanks OP.

Might get onto this. Currently on Virgin $40 sim w/4gb roll-over plus all the other features of the Optus plan. The 12months doesn't concern me too much

  • Thnx

  • +1

Any issues taking this up and porting across from a diff Optus based provider? Ie. Amaysim? Still considered a new customer?

    • +1

Yes that would be considered as a new customer

    • I'm wondering the same, as an existing Amaysim Customer
