Optus $40/month SIM Plan 12 MTH Contract 10GB Data, Unlimited Text/MMS & Unlimited Calls

2060

NEW SERVICES ONLY

Optus BYO $40 SIM PLAN 12 Months Contract (Was $60)

10GB Data

Unlimited Calls

Unlimited Text/MMS (Selected International Countries)

300 Mins International Calls (Selected International Countries)

BYO Phone

Price will stay at $40 per month after the 12 months contract has finished, until you change or cancel your plan.

The 12 Month Contract is a bummer as you will be locked with Optus for 12 months. However, its hard to complain at $40 for 10GB data a month.

Try online chat if you are an existing customer, and see what they can do.

Mod note 9/1: This deal originally expired on the 4/1/16, however a user has reported it is unofficially still available until 31/1/16. To obtain the deal ask for it on live chat (may also work in store). Thanks Roguewolf

  • I'm thinking about porting how long do I need to stay without optus mobile to be considered new customer ?

    • I think you just literally need to not be with optus for a second (technically). People port out and back in within a day or 2 all the time :)

  • can you port a voda pre paid no? Currently on $30 per month with a measly 1gb with voda.

  • Could someone give me instructions on how to port out my number and get it back for this plan? Currently on the $50/8gb optus plan.

    Thanks!

  • Voda call centre was happy to throw in a $20 d/c off their $60 12Gb SIM only 12-month plan with next to no effort.

    • +1

      optus did not :(
They suck. Don't go into a contract with Optus. They are inflexible. They underestimate social media.

No deal for an existing optus customer.

  • Thank you $10 discount from work bring this to a $30/month.

Much better than vaya's $18 for 1.5GB and $xxx number of calls.

    • What do you mean by $10 discount from work?

      • -4

A $10 optus discount i get from work?

I'm not sure how to break it down anymore for you. :S

        • +1

Maybe by explaining it instead of saying, "one thing led to another and you know, yada, yada, yada."

        • -2

          @Daabido:

There is literally nothing to explain; there is no one thing led to another or any yada yada yada.

'Thank you $10 discount from work'

Not sure why this needs explaining, it literally doesn't get any simpler than this.

Keep down voting me you're just peanut butter and aeroplane jealous.

  • So I just rang Vodafone customer care, thinking it would be no problem for them to match it or even offer something better. Was told the best they can do was $45/month 12gb, sounds good but I'd rather cheaper than more data. Being a long time customer I thought they'd want to keep me….oh well, Optus it is…

    • you should ask another rep, i just upgrade my sim only plan. i have 2 numbers, first i'm locked in to 12 months contract with 12GB and second month to month contract with 11GB.

      each number is $40/month.

      • BTW the deal they gave me above was for 24 months, but the first two months were unlimited data.

I tried live chat as well to see if they would budge, best they could offer was the $40/month with 8gb. Couldn't be bothered anymore so I just went with Optus.

  • +2

i spoke to Vodafone - I am on the $50 with 11GB Month by Month plan - and the guy wanted to put me on the $45 locked in for 24 months.

I said FORGET IT - your pulling my Kabana - and hung up.

    waste of 20mins.

    • They sure were pulling your kabana

  • When someone does port out and then in again can you let us know it all went OK? Thx

  • "Price will stay at $40 per month after the 12 months contract has finished"

would double check this, spoke to Optus on chat & he said it goes back to $60 after the 12months finishes

Not like it matters will be other deals around by then

    • Surely they'd have to honour that part

    • +1

I believe that particular Optus rep has read too much into the "$20 discount for the life of the plan". The life of the plan goes beyond the 12M contract date.

      • think he was, spoke to another rep, confirmed it stays at $40 with 10gb

        • Yes I did too and he also confirmed the $40 offer goes beyond the life of the contract. He also said there was nothing preventing existing customers porting out and back in again.

  • Im with Optus for a Month to Month deal, I hardly get 4G reception

Phone reception is not any better with constant drop-outs on the train in Sydney between Central and Canterbury. Never had that issue with Telstra on the same phone.

  • Voda indeed looks like a sitting sucker.

Glad I got my Glitch data in on time:>
260GB $150 on network Telstra for the next annum." credit: @nicois
MBB - no device discrimination, no vendor lock in
$0 wastage for those months I use LESS, NOR an untoward financial penalty to my streaming 20+gb/m mobile

Ah & Optus starter Kit $5 @WOW, til 8 Dec quite good timing. Shall come in nicely for <1/2hour a day every few days weekly chitt chatty: "1Dollar-come-$0.17/Day" Sessions (backup for Skype world plan anyway) 40MB etc.
^Dollar Day Optus is a cannibal to Simplicity low callers..bad luck TLS)

All in all 2-3x 4G data Telstra 900mins calls $170p.a not too shabby

  • Price matched with Voda $60 SIM ONLY plan, now I'm getting more data and unlimited international calls on selected countries.

Just called up and get the customer service transfer your call to their resolution team and explain to them Optus currently having this offer and you want them to price match it.

The guy that answered my phone call just have a looked at Optus website and he pretty much agreed straight away without any hassle.

    • Pretty awesome!

Wonder which has a better chance, to go to a store or try online chat…

      • Give them a call, i think you have a better chance!

  • +1

Wasn't getting anywhere calling optus. Just went in an they changed my $50 optus plan to this one. Managed to keep my number too.

    • So the Optus store rep changed your plan?

      • +2

I went in an asked a rep if I could change plans, he then asked if I was on a month to month plan, to which I said yes. He said that's all I needed to be able to switch, he then got on one of the store phones and dialed a number in for me. I explained the situation to the rep on the phone and a few minutes later the rep said he'd switched my plan over and it would take effect my next billing cycle which is the 4th. Also received a confirmation text.

        • I"m gonna try this. Can't be bothered having to jump through the POPI hoops.

  • Are you able to use the $40 monthly fee for direct billing purposes on the google play store? Does the monthly fee become a positive credit in your account?

  • +3

I think the restriction on transferring existing services only applies to post paid customers. I was on Optus pre paid, signed up for this, and my service is active.

So if you're on prepaid Optus, just apply! No need to port out port in.

    • @romants seems to have been on a plan…

  • Optus just lost me as a customer for there absolute disdain for existing customers. Asked them if there is any deal for existing customers. In a round about way, the online chat said, we don't care that you are an existing customer.

    I'm porting out.

  • Is this plan part of shared data? I already have two phones with Optus (that have shared data between them) and would like to move my wife's (who is currently with Amaysim) if the deal is shared data across the plan. Thanks

    • +3

To answer my own question - Yes the new plan will allow shared data.

  • Got the deal. Easy as pie. I was on Optus's $50 plan (with 8 GB data, unlimited calls and SMS, 300 int'l minutes) which had no commitment. I called and asked to go on this plan. They said ok right away, no drama. Kept the same number, that wasn't even part of the conversation. Now I'm on this plan :D

    • Nice! I'm on that same deal and I've tried online chat multiple times and in store yesterday, but been shot down every time, they just don't want me on this deal :)

I'll give calling them a go today, before doing the port out, port back in thing.

      • Usually they want to lock you in……hence this being a contract, they are usually keen to get you to sign up

  • How do i data share across multiple devices? Optus are saying they charge $5/mth for this service, i thought based on above comments you only needed to purchase a $5sim as a one-off, can someone please explain? Newbie when it comes to technology, sorry :) Here's the link the online optus guy sent me about data sharing across devices:
    http://smb.optus.com.au/opfiles/Shop/All/cis/Cis%20Documents/1415558_CIS_$5_My_Mobile_Broadband_Plus.pdf

  • if you're moving from tpg, you get a $10 porting offer=$30/mth, not $40!!! winning!!!

    • would it work for virgin mobile?

    • Called up Optus and they are not offering this. They said that offer expired on 28 November and was never part of this deal. Pushed them and asked them to speak with managaer but no joy for $10 off with TPG porting.

    • The TPG Offer is valid until 4th January as well, shown here: http://offer.optus.com.au/tpg

Edit: Verifying now with online chat.

  • 15 years with optus, currently off contract waiting on them to get z5 premiums from sony and they will not let me switch to this deal.

    how long does porting take?

    • +2

Optus' stance in regards to this deal is bizarre. I'm in a similar situation, on a month to month plan, but they won't allow me to switch either.

I thought being able to lock current customers into a 12 month contract might mean something to their projected bottom line, but obviously Optus sees things differently.

From memory, porting usually takes a couple of hours, but can't say for sure as I haven't ported in a couple of years. That's about to change though, as bought a couple of $2 Sims yesterday to be able to get in on this deal.

      • +1

Yeah it's a bit ridiculous. Have read about switching to prepaid then back again. Might be a quicker option??

        • I'll try that, thanks mate.

        • Is there any cost in switching to Optus Prepaid (e.g. SIM cost) and if so, do you know how much?

        • It cost $10 recharge.. I then got a phone call from optus stating that all customers both new and old cab have this plan

      • I'd jump on it, but not keen on being locked into contract….

I thought they'd be grabbing all those lock ins.

  • +1

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/219674 Am I missing something or is this a better deal?
Cheaper and not locked into a contract..

    • It's only half price for 6 months, after that it returns to full price. Sure there's no contract but if you're planning to stick around for longer than 6 months this seems like a better deal

      • +1

Hmm true.. But I'm willing to bet in 6 months time or even less there will be a better deal from one of the telcos…

        • +1

jdogg makes an excellent point. I'd rather 6 months half price and not be locked in TBH

  • +3

Managed to switch from the $50/mth 8gb sim to this by switching to Prepaid first as someone mentioned.
    Steps:
    1. Call Optus asking to switch to Prepaid.
    2. A few hours later the switch is completed.
    3. Log into Optus account and add the minimum $10 on daily plus.
    4. Call Optus asking to switch from Prepaid to the $40/mth 10gb plan.
    Done.

The credit from Prepaid was deducted from the 1st month bill on the new plan. Asked if it will still be $40 after 12 months and was told no it will be $60. It is actually a $60 plan with a $20 credit every month.

Had initially tried doing this in-store hoping it would be quicker but the rep told me at least 5 times I was trying to rort the system.

    • I just did the same, but without the $10 recharge.

  • +1

Just got my wife onto this plan, thanks all

  • Thanks!!

Was able to use this to get Telstra to swap me from $70/month 1.5gb on telstra to their $40/month 7GB offer. Still had 3 months left on contract. Called up customer support and mentioned I wanted to speak to someone about plans/pricing and competitor offers, got put through to 'Retentions' team, spoke with an aussie and showed her the Optus deal, and she checked with her manager and then was able to put me through!

  • Thanks! I signed up with Optus through online chat with a consultant - I must say the signup form was fantastic.

I already have a Optus home phone and internet plan so the representative said I would get an additional $10 off per month for the mobile plan. Apparently you can only have one mobile attached for the discount.

  • Just to verify; this offer CAN be joined with TPG's porting $10/mth offer. Just signed up then.

Have screenshot with Optus chat if needed :)

$30/mth for 10GB is pretty nice!

  • For those who prefer Vodafone, they're also now offering a very similar deal ($40/month for 10GB data, 12 month sim-only contract):

    http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/sim-cards/sim-only/stateā€¦

The only differences I can see is Vodafone are only giving 90 international minutes per month as opposed to 300 international minutes offered by Optus, but on the flipside, Vodafone is offering half price access fee for the first month.

  • Thanks OP, managed to get an addition $10/mth off for this mobile plan bringing it down to $30/mth due to the Optus home phone/internet plan. Also ordered a few data share SIM's at $5/each to take advantage of the 10GB of data!

  • Thanks landroverz7. Just went and switched to this. Sick and tired of TPG charging me $$ every 2 months to "restore a/c as Prepayment Outside included value is low". Had to tell Optus lady it was their $60 plan with $20 credit applied per month. (Admittedly she was a part-time person). Shall wait and see if my first bill is in fact $40. Tried to get the TPG > Optus $10 credit as well, but has expired ;((

  • just to add a little note that Optus (at least via online chat) is still honouring this deal.

i just managed to sign up two new services (port from Telstra and from Amaysim) to this an hour ago.
