Whole Cooked Roast Chicken - Now $8 @ Coles (Selected States)

1420

Down down, roast chicken is down :) permanent price drop!

Woolworths did have a go at a counteroffer of $7.90 but the signs in store said it was till the 26th,so I don't know if they'll continue.

Cheap cheap!

Was spotted in WA catalogue (and heard on WA radio), some states have mentioned not seeing it in-store - seems to exclude VIC.

Don't humanise a chicken. It's meant to go in the pot, or grill in this case.

Love how everyone negs that comment… "I'm not a bad person, how dare you attack my morality"

    • nice meme.

      • Hi Tone.

  • Cheaper at woolies until the 26th as stated by OP.

  • +1

They will just be smaller chickens. Like maccas burgers dominos etc.

    • +4

Bought one last night, pretty sure it was a quail

      • +1

Agree that the $8 chooks are smaller than before, in new bags to conceal the change .. :-( .. !! The ones I bought were falling-off-the-bone cooked and tasted OK though. I prefer charcoal chicken but not the drive to find one.

  • +1

The coles chickens are RSPCA approved, the Woolworths ones aren't ……. not sure how much more comfort the RSPCA approved chickens had, but supermarkets are quick to leverage what they can in advertising, so the Woolies one probably did it tougher

    • +5

I'm sure the Coles chooks take comfort in knowing their slaughter was RSPCA approved .. :-( .. !!

    • I think Coles has a rather open policy with the RSPCA, whereas Woolies would prefer they stay out of their business.

    • +4

RSPCA is an organisation for hire, much like Choice. Means nothing in reality.

        Or the Heart Foundation… tick!

    Leeeeeeeroy Jenkins….has some chicken!

  • can anyone taste the different between caged and free ranges chickens?

    • +3

u can taste the fear in the caged ones

    • Not really, they usually have different stuffing & seasoning anyway.
But if you get a real free range home grown they will generally have a gamier flavour.

  • only buying roasted chicken in COSTCO

Unsureif this is allowing too much inside industry information available however here is some information which may clarify a lot of the incorrect information here. Here are some facts (without giving too much detail):

    • In Australia, there are 2 major chicken producers: Ingham and Baiada (Steggles). Generally they contract out growers.
    • Ingham and Baiada supply many large customers including Coles, Woolworths, McDonalds, KFC, etc.
    • In recent years, major customers put pressure on their suppliers e.g. chicken producers to be RSPCA approved. Both are - however, it one markets as RSPCA then the other one would generally have to. It's just like "hormone free" chicken advertising - chickens have not been fed hormones for years in Australia - however, the animal husbandry and research into diet/freed etc. has led to larger chickens.
    • Basically all of Coles/Woolworths chicken is supplied from Ingham and Steggles - including all those raw chickens/drumsticks/wings etc.
    • This includes BBQ chickens
    • "Generally" one of the major customers supplies Coles or Woolworths (you can make your own guesses or undertake your own research).

As to who is going to be squeezed in the process, I think it is similar to other large suppliers dealing with Coles/Woolworths and price reductions (my own view is in this case that it would be unlikely to be the growers although I could be wrong). In saying that, I did not feel it was that long ago when a Coles/Woolworths large chook was $5/$6 anyway.

    • Good information.

      Thanks for sharing.

    • no, you havent gone too far, I would think everyone knows what you have stated, its pretty common knowledge.

even local butchers tout the No Hormones in our chicken to scare people.

      • I would think everyone knows what you have stated, its pretty common knowledge.

Most definitely is not common knowledge.

        • fair enough, I thought it was. I am not in that industry at all, nor are any of my friends but we would all know what was stated here.

  • just got out of Tooronga. Still $11 there (and being advertised as such over the PA)

    • Was advertised in a WA catalogue :/ But should be nationwide

    • Yep, still $11 here as well.

  • Its about time too. Coles and woolworths have been ripping us off in the last few years. Cant wait for Aldi. Noticed a box of 40 twinnings tea bags at coles is now $9. Was $6 2 years ago. Aldi sell their box of 40 english breakfast tea bags for $2.99 . So it shows we are being fleeced.

      Rubbish.
One is a "premium" brand and the other is an aldi house brand.

      english breakfast at coles
      50 for $2.30
      http://shop.coles.com.au/online/national/coles-fair-trade-or…
oh no, Aldi is fleecing you.

      • +1

Hmm checked at luch time and this item is not available in Adelaide. I suppose that is because we have yet to have an aldo open here. I suppose this is an example of what coles will do when aldi opens which is to sell their tea cheaper.

        • ….and your wrong again.

Its available in Perth, and there is no Aldi open here either.

But don't let facts get in the way of your tin foil hat argument.

  • I came to Coles - Central West Shopping Centre at Braybrook at lunch.

The staff there refused to sell me the whole roast chicken for $8. They said that the small size would be $11 and large size $13

    • That is correct

    • Unless Coles advertised them at $8 in VIC or they had a promotion/coupon, why would the staff discount it for you and potentially risk their job?

  • So how long before you wouldn't eat one of these after its been on the stand? Bought one last week and saw a few were marked down, it as just after 5 and the freshest was 4.30pm so i got that but was tempted by the marked down 11.30am ones. Figured 3 or 4 dollars wasn't worth the risk but was there any risk?

    • No risk as the chickens are kept at high temp, but will be drier than the fresh ones.

  • For what its worth, the Coles variety of roast chook has always been a bit tastier and juicier than the Woolies ones (tried both on and off varieties on off over the years)

  • -2

still $11 here in Port Melbourne Coles. went to woolworth and they have it for $8(large).
like many have reported its not nation wide like your title.

    • Title and OP changed. Care to change your vote yourself, or would you like a mod to do it for you?

      • +1

now now, no need to get passive aggressive =P

  • Hey, I got Woolies to price match on the chicken and they sold one to me for $7.50.

If anyone is looking for a receipt, I'll be more than happy to upload.

I think there's still 2 left in the Glen.
It will have a different model no., but same size chicken with slightly different flavor.

    • just a joke *
  • ++++1

  • Wish the half or quarter chicken was a bit cheaper…

  • Just saw the ad at Coles Melbourne Central so I assume that it includes VIC.

  • Went to local Woolies (Hastings VIC) and not a barby chicken in sight and the oven wasn't working. Didn't bother asking. I went straight round to local Coles. Their barby chick seems slightly smaller but still very adequate. The eating when cold seemed to be better. The breast meat on Woolies chicks is very dry. The Coles ones were a bit more moist. Never bought a Coles chick before but may try again.

    edit:
Both Coles and Woolies here have been selling at $7.90 since before AU day.
