For people who are not aware: this can not be used as normal network cable; it is meant to connect a computer directly to another computer without a switch/hub/router in between.

    • +7

If you could be bothered to rewire the heads you could change it to a network cable.

    • +32

Don't most routers just autosense? I've never had one at home that doesn't. And I've had a lot. Netgear, Billion, TP-Link, Netcomm, Buffalo.

      • +2

Yeah pretty sure they do thesedays.

      • +1

What is this witchcraft? Burn them!!

        Autosense FTW.

      • +1

Gigabit ports autosense as part of the standard, 10/100MBit ports may not.

    • +24

Wouldn't modern switches just detect it's a crossover and then treat it like a standard network cable?

    • +6

You might want to change your comment, since it's kind of incorrect. You're making is sound like it won't work, when 99% of routers will work fine. And anyone getting this for serious networking reasons will already know if it won't work with their system (Or it's at least a very cheap lesson to learn)

      • +5

Wasn't aware of the crossover detection. Just wanted to avoid people buying something and scratching their heads why it wouldn't work. I am fairly certain there are still plenty of scenario's where a cable like this may cause issues.
Can't edit my comment because editing is disabled after people respond.

        • -3

There is not "plenty of scenario's where a cable like this may cause issues" all modern networking devices auto sense :-P

Know what your talking about first

        • +17

          @marchi:

Know what you're talking about first

        • +2

@bargainhunter: You missed "There are not plenty"

    • +2

I think it's true at command and conquer time.

Nowadays routers can auto dedect the crossings.

      • My employment in IT pre-dates Command-and-conquer. My first-ever task was to detangle a switchboard :)
I still would be cautious with how/where a X-over cable is used though. It may not work as desired in all scenarios.

        • +1

You might want to modernise your IT skills, champ.

        • +1

Auto-MDI/X (auto cable detection + correction for whatever cable type) has been mandatory since gigabit ethernet was introduced and popular on 10/100 controllers for even longer. You need to modernise your networking knowledge, stat.

      • Thanks for the heads up about this, I almost didn't buy one under the assumption it was only for PC to PC, but have a gigabit router that's only a few months old, should be perfect to run the cable to my android box next to my TV :)

    • Crossover and regular cables have been interchangeable for years. Any bit of modern gear should autodetect.

    • +8

      I can't believe this has 8 upvotes.

Even a decade ago you would struggle to find something that was not auto sensing.

If you purchased this and it didn't work, you should be replacing whatever the thing is you plugged it into.

      • And I was previously wondering how the Libs got in…..I think I can now see why.

      • … except if that something is a (passive) PoE powered device, which are very much modern, and will probably go bang if you use a crossover cable.

        • Any modern device that powers or injects POE will only output the required amount of power if the conditions are correct.

          Nothing should go bang.

        • @grb1234:

I literally have a POE injector in front of me that automatically senses if the device requires power and how much it needs.

This is why I can plug it into devices that do not need POE and they keep working.

        • @samfisher5986: Right, that is 802.3af/at. Not the same as passive, which supplies power at all times.

        • @grb1234:

The point still stands which is all that matters.

    • Requiring use of patch and crossover where applicable has been a non-issue for well over a decade.

Even the cheapest of hardware have autosense these days, mix and match to your heart's content.

    • I thought the days of crossover cables were long gone! I'd be surprised if this didn't work via a hub OR direct connection?

  • Sold out across WA

  • Stafford City in Brisbane has stock, thats it.

    • Got two. (Yes I need them)

    • Looks like there's none left at Stafford City now…

    • Went to stafford city and none was on the shelf but about 8 or 9 boxes were behind the cashier. They were bought by 'someone', the staff told me….

  • +5

Most (all?) current devices have have implemented ethernet auto mdix. For the 99% of computers out there, you most probably won't ever need such a cable. A straight through cable will work.

  • Noosa on the Sunshine Coast is the only one.

  • +1

    Good luck finding local stock.

    • -1

There were lots near me when the deal was posted, been cleared out pretty quick though. i got the last 2 from my local

  • -1

Get ready to get dicked folks…

  • Thanks. Grabbed a couple.

    • Did you pay for it though?

      • +3

I left a gift card on the counter.

        • +2

I left a tied up and gagged Anchorage Capital employee on the counter and they took it as payment.

Not sure what they want to do with him, maybe keep him as a slave behind the counter? Who knows.

  • Nothing in Melbourne?

Regardless 15m of cat 6 for $2 is good, got my mini man cave network are you all I need is this and I'm set.

    • +4

Is it a regular sized cave for mini men?

Or a mini sized cave for regular men?

      • Pretty decent size, it's my nerd cave as the wife calls it but then a few meters away there is my garage. :)

  • +2

Thanks OP, I'll crossover to my nearest DSE after work

  • +2

i remember buying 10 of these 3 years ago for $1 each

  • Damm I was in Robina yesterday and I couldn't see anything worth getting. They only have one left. Bought it, chances are I will forget to pick it up as I don't go there very often. :(

    • It's alright, let me know the order number and I'll pick it up ;)

  • What happens if they have none for local pickup? (this has happened to me before receivership happened)
Will there be refunds or no?

    • Yes, i got a call from dick smith today about a different item not being in stock, he said he'll refund it no problems.
      If not paypal dispute it

  • Doesnt seem available anywhere. No matter what suburb i try, it doesnt let me even pick a far away suburb or destination. Strange, it just says none.

  • Thanks - just ordered.
Mobile site shows no stock, but full site worked.

  • +1

Good for tying shit to your trailer.

  • Two shops in Tassy have stock, didn't even think there are that many DS down there.

    • There are 7…

  • +2

$2 is about the most I'm comfortable spending at DSE these days..

  • -6

I'M SHOCKED!!!! I just can't believe it. The surprise is truly shocking to say the least.

NO STOCK in any ACT store.

    I'm speechless.

(more so that I even bothered to waste my time checking, knowing full well that stock is never available for decent deals like this locally)

No wonder they went broke… good riddance.

    • +3

Alright drama queen, ever thought this might be a clearance line, thus low stock?

      • -2

No need for name calling just because you dont agree with me.

I cant remember the last time I was able to source ANY stock from Dick Smith when they advertise 'clearance items' like this.
It's either bait advertising with ridiculously low quantities, or staff horde the sale items for themselves.

Seriously… in the last year alone here in ACT at least, stock quantities havent just been low, they've been non-existent.

        • +1

But…they're not advertising it, so it cannot be bait. Also, the Receivership has raised the issue of major stock problems within the business, so not finding the stock you want locally, that's to be expected no?

        • I have it on good word the closest store to Canberra with stock is Wagga Wagga with 2-5 units

        • @Jayskies:

Wagga is 260km away, that's convenient :). Demonstrates how little stock they have in the Canberra region… none.

And of course they are advertising it… they are making it "available" on their website, and drawing people to the website because of it (it drew me!).

And again, the fact that the Receivership even mentioned stock issues as a contributing factor only serves to back up my original notion that stock was more than likely never available (or at such low levels that most customers would never be able to purchase it). And no, I shouldn't "expect it" because if it was a noted problem you'd think they would have addressed it to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

The Dick Smith retail chain is a failed enterprise that deserves what's currently happening to it. I'm obviously not the only customer disappointed with them, hence their failure.

          But I digress… it's obvious we don't agree.

I look forward to their closure.

        • +1

          @UFO:

I agree with you, I searched inner west, northern suburbs, south west etc and still could not find a single store with stock….I wonder if the 93 positive votes are people who found stock.

        • -1

          @UFO:

WA is far…far bigger than ACT in case you haven't noticed lately, and there's no stock here. But as said, it's a clearance item for an Australia-wide store. There's really no need to kick up a stink about stock levels.

        • -1

          @Spackbace:

Who cares about WA? Of course I haven't noticed… no one notices. Just secede already :).

        • +1

          @UFO:

          Oh the irony…

        • @Spackbace:

          :)

ACT is the capital that no one cares about. WA is the rich uncle that everyone hates, but sucks up to because $$$.

Thanks Christmas gifts for the kids sorted…

    cuts the wire into 5 * 3 meter wires= 5 skipping ropes

  • none in Gold Coast

  • It says max number per order is 5. Anyone tried just submitting multiple orders???

Did you get the stuff or did they stop you when you went to pick it up?

  • The copper in this cable would be worth more than $2 if your time extracting the copper is worth nothing you could make enough money for a packet of eneloops or a torch for the less enthusiastic

  • Grabbed a few - paid with PayPal just in case :). Thanks OP - miles cheaper than when I last bought Cables (from bunnings).

  • This is $1.40 now.

  • $0.50 in store today…
