Only way to watch NEW 9HD on my Pioneer Plasma! As No MPEG4
    Old HD fine

    • +2

says "PlayTV's two TV tuners are High Definition ready and are able to view, record and play back High Definition signals in full HD1080P to fully complement PS3's already impressive High Definition credentials"

      • says "PlayTV's two TV tuners

It's not a dual tuner AFAIK, but you can view & record two channels on the same transponder, i.e. SBS 2 and SBS one or ABC 21 and ABC 22

        Cheers

    • +1

Not true champ. Mate of mine uses them on MythTV and they are 100% fine and working in SD, HD, whatever. You not getting all the channels has nothing to do with HD/SD anyway, that's a reception issue.

      • Not true champ. Mate of mine uses them on MythTV and they are 100% fine

Confirmed; our home's media comes from a debian/ mythtv backend server. I have one of these connected along with a two PCI card tuners. Works a treat.

  • +1

Definitely HDTV ready. I'm using one of these on my mythTV server.

    • Definitely HDTV ready. I'm using one of these on my mythTV server.

When there's so much quality HD TV available, yea?

I mean, what have we got apart from SBS One HD that is worth recording or watching?

Regarding mythTV, I have the Sony PS TV tuner configured to record ABC channels 21 & 22, which are SD. In that respect the Sony thingie is fit for purpose.

  • thanks, brought one, always wanted one of these a way to record TV (not that there is anything on)

    • what is this sorry i dont know about it, is it like chromecast, i am looking to buy chromecast 2 , but i dont have ps3 i have xbox console.

      • +2

Its a tv tuner….the equivalent of a set-top box for your pc or ps3….. Allows you to watch and record free2air tv….

  • +1

Thanks I will grab a spare, old one has been running for years. Works great under Windows 10 (Google search to find drivers, Windows 7 drivers are fine).

Large unit for what it is, but very robust and excellent quality. Can confirm supports HD and duel channel.
Also when used outside the PlayStation its not Freeview crippled.

Still using kodi and the old media portal.

    • What do u mean by not Freeview crippled?

      • +3

You are able to fast forward/skip ads

      • Freeview compliant when used with the PS3, limits fast fwd speed, certain ads can't be skipped, and some content can't be recorded.
That's tge PS3 software, use it with anything else and these don't apply

    • I tried using Kodi instead of WMC but I could never get the system to download the EPG data. I also tried mediaportal but had a similar problem. WMC seems to set it up and get the EPG data just fine.

      • I believe Kodi can't CONTROL the tuners, only connect to backends that control them. Such as MythTV, Media Portal, and more.

It's the backends that pull down the EPG, not Kodi. Kodi just allows you to watch the recorded content.

        • I think I used NextPVR or something. Hardly worked, froze when trying to select channels, no EPG data.

I am fine with WMC on my HTPC for now.

      • I had kodi running on raspberry pi with a different tuner but the EPG wasn't working for me either. In the end, it's because it wasn't set to the correct time.

So you essentially need to be connected to the Internet cause raspberry pi doesn't have a battery so the time resets whenever you power cycle.

  • +3

Using 2 of these in a raspberry pi 2 running tvheadend server with multiple kodi front ends. Great devices

    • Just curious whats the best way to get it working with Kodi?

      • im not too sure what is best but i got it going no problems with tvheadend because kodi includes a tvheadend plugin as default. Its just not enabled by default.

as for raspberry pi backend, you have to dump raw streams for PVR functions. it cant transcode reliabily because of RAM limitations.

      • Using a raspberry Pi, start off installing osmc or openelec. I prefer osmc, has a dated but stable tvheadend plugin

      • I use DVBLink with Kodi and one of these and it works flawlessly- I tried pretty much every other option mentioned here http://kodi.wiki/view/PVR but had no luck with any of them. DVBLink is definitely the way to go IMO.

        • +1 for DVB link. Streaming to tablet/over the internet is pretty darn handy.

  • Using one of these atm with windows 8 Media Center, easy to setup and works perfectly with all channels. Picked up another one, now time to build another PC.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Bought cheers

These are great. Plug and play in Linux. I would have posted this, except there did not seem to be sufficient quantity (I got the last one at my shop, and none available for delivery.)

BTW, there is no such thing as a HD or SD tuner. It just records the signal, does not decode it. Same with codec - the tuner does not know or care if it uses h264.
A shame there is no OSX driver.

And a bigger shame there is so little on free-to-air worth recording these days. At least the picture quality is better than with iView.

  • Don't forget, if you plan to use this with a PS3 and your PS3 is plugged into a TV, the chances are your TV may already have a tuner.
    Just sayin'.

    • +1

Yes but my TV doesn't have any DVR functionality.

      • +1

My TV has a tuner and a PVR, but I haven't configured either, even after 3 years!

    • +1

500gb HDD in the PS3, and this $12, cheaper then buying a HDD for my TV, since ive had my PS3 for years, and my tv wont share HDD for recording

  • Thanks, grabbed one!

  • +2

Avoid. Just orded two, went to pick them up hoping they'd still atleast have boxes let alone the driver disc and a usb cable to connect it.

Got handed a bag with two loose units in them nothing else, one looked like it had been opened up and worked on the other rattled like anything else.

Guy was surprised when I handed it back and asked for my money back and then tried to con me into taking a giftcard (paid with paypal online).

Just bear in mind, if you pay with paypal from the webshop they try to claim you didnt "buy your items" you bought a giftcard, then bought your items with that.

Offered they call consumer affairs on that one, they tried to bs their way out and gave up and handed me a refund.

    • +3

I don't know what else one would expect from EB Games. That's generally how their preowned accessories are.

    • You know "preowned" means used?
And I thought everybody had a drawer full of mini-B USB cables, as most things use micro-usb now.

    • Lol, I dont think they bsed you, if you buy items with home delivery in store cause they ran out they buy it online for you first then you pay the store. A sort of temp buy by the store. Could be they gift card the store the money for it.

      • +2

alrighty kids lets clear a few things up :

Yes knew it was pre-owned, still expected it to atleast come with the driver disc (it's useless without it unless you are using it on pc).

The other big drama came with one of them being opened up, having worked with the company in the past, EB has a habit of not QA testing a lot of electronics and when they do being inconsistent with it, in general I avoid touching electronics items that have been opened.

Secondly the rattle on the otherone made it sound like it had been smashed.

Given my background is in electronics yes I could have taken them home and fixed it, but my time with EB taught me that a lot of the time it's usually gear that store level clerks havnt tested that someone has offloaded on them (some stores are great at it some aren't).

On the trying to give me store credit end, i've just purchased an item via their website, I had an option to pay with credit card or paypal.

Nowhere during the transaction did it state the purchase was not for the items and was instead for a giftcard for the exact items amount and that refunds would be handled as such, simple as that.

        • I was not doubting why you gave them back i would have also, as I would have got my cash back.

Im just saying the system between store and online from what ive seen is strange. I was buying games in a 3 for $15 at the time, they seemed to buy the games from online at full cost then sell them to me in the deal. I was just suggesting that the guy may have been truthful about how they got paid by online, shouldnt stop you getting cash back though.

  • Cheers OP :)

So for Windows 10, Kodi front end and Media Portal back end is the go?

  • Thanks, bought all WA stock I think, lol.

    (just 2)

    • Strange, it would allow me to order two from Armadale.

I hope you're not right about getting the last ones, I have been looking for these for a very long time (at any price really).

  • +1

Make sure you get the disc as you can't download the software from anywhere

    • Make sure of the opposite as well, I went to buy one from the store at innaloo a couple of weeks ago and they tried to sell me just the disc which was useful.

It's a good device we use, a bit of a pain boring the ps3 to watch TV and we had to buy a splitter as there's no output for the aerial like on a normal set top box.

  • Thanks, just ordered one from Hallett Cove in SA.

  • Out of stock online, but pick-up from local store :)

  • Oh man, been waiting to get one of these cheap since the last time they were clearing them out from Harvey Norman… but looks like only Dandenong and northlands are the only places with stock in Melbourne.

  • Cheers, got two. Gonna pimp my raspberry pi. No TV socket in my room and in a unit, rabbit ears aren't cutting it

  • +1

Just received this message from my local, I think you would have better chance in store.

    Well this is embarassing.

It seems the team at Harbourtown Gold Coast couldn't find your items. They searched high and low, but nada. Zilch. Zip. Nothing.

However, all is not lost! There may be a chance that we can ship your order directly to you from our Brisbane warehouse at no extra cost!

Just click the button below to see what we can do.

    Edit your order

    Our deepest apologies,

    The EB Games Team.

  • Any way to be used in a car? Keep people happy in the back on long drives.

    • +1

I doubt in anyway remotely useful…..

    • Whack a TV antenna on the roof, signal amp, away you go :)

      • +1

A screen would probably increase the entertainment factor a bit too!

      • BMW have a built in TV tuner, so there must be a smaller aerial alternative? I have A windows 10 laptop and a small Yagi aerial…Doable but cant be bothered.

        • I'm not at all sure but wouldn't you need a dual diversity antenna(or something)setup to maintain a decent signal for digital tv while in motion(such as a car)???

        • +1

Yeah, they have a little 'fin' above the rear windscreen.
Worked fine for analogue but for digital very flaky - SBS was the most consistent.
(At home I have 99% signal strength.)
          Newer models may be better?

  • I use one Windows7 MCE but when I try to run a second unit for 4 tuners the recordings keep failing randomly. It seems that 2 of the tuners still work ok but the other 2 fail randomly. Anyone else using two units together.

    • Two of these units work well on my MC7 box. I had to create some drivers by getting the latest hauppage drivers for the tuner chipset and adding the playTV's device ID.

      • Thanks for the response. I followed the post by user "Bossworld" here http://www.avforums.com/threads/sony-play-tv-with-windows-me… but it doesn't mention anything about device ID's. It works fine for 1 PlayTV box but not 2. It also says to use Elgato drivers rather than Hauppage. Looks like maybe you did it differently. Do you have a link to instructions as I am not seeing anything from a Google search.

  • I have one sitting in my room but I can't install on my PS3 as it won't read discs anymore.

  • For Melbourne only one left in each of about 10 shops in outer suburbs…

  • Thanks for posting this deal. The Sony Playstation PlayTV is one of the few supported TV's by MythTV, although i was never able to get the PlayTV to work properly with MythTV.

    • +1

A poster further up mentioned he has them running and a mate of mine is successfully so it definitely is supported and possible.

      • Yes, its possible, just had trouble and then gave up, but may look into trying it again.

  • Snatched one - thanks.

    • We'll see how it goes w/MediaPortal.
  • Fyi - I tried mine on media portal and the picture quality was much poorer than on ps3. Prolly the codecs or scaling.

    • Don't forget to tweak the codecs and filters (on the MediaPortal Config). Looks good over here!

  • Was thinking of getting one for my HTP running Openelec. Anybody used one can confirm if they work with this mainly the EPG and PVR function. Also assume I don't need a separate remote as software to controll tv function would be built into KODI/Openelec using the MCE compatible remote.

    • I've used this tuner with Kodi on Raspberry Pi and can confirm that EPG and PVR worked fine.

  • Good one, picked up a couple.

  • +4

The one i bought had a hair on it.

    • Quick clone it!

  • I have two of these already, didn't realise people were still on the lookout for them. Wonder if they can be used in combination with a Raspberry Pi…

    • +2

Yes they can. Openelec for Pi is pretty good. Performance issues on Model B however its great on the quadcore verison.

  • Is it a twin tuner or single?

    Can you record on PS3?

Hack for it to work on PS4?

    • Yes you can record on PS3, no hack to make it work on PS4

  • Anyone been able to get working drivers for windows 7?

I've googled it obviously and trawled through some pretty dodgy websites and haven't been able to get them to work.

    • +2

I think I got it working on Windows 7, but can't be 100% certain. I used this guide recently to do it on a W10 PC:

      http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Off-Topic…

The drivers (which say they support windows 7) I used are: https://www.elgato.com/en/eyetv/eyetv-diversity/support/driv…

The drivers installed to: C:\Users\ [Username]\AppData\Local\Temp

Go through device manager, find the PlayTV (think it will show as elgato) and manually choose which drivers to use, selecting the ones in the above folder.

I installed "MediaPortal TV Server Configuration" software on the PC to manage the Tuner, MCEBuddy to transcode and remove ads from the recordings, and MediPortal PVR in Kodi to watch live tv and set/watch recordings.

I went into Melbourne Central store this morning and was offered delivery from the central warehouse for $28, when I enquired why it was $28 and not $12 I was told that the $12 is only for the disc… Anyway, they dont have stock, and online is $5 delivery.

    • I had chosen a pick up from a local store in CBD (which at the time showed stock), just to get an email 10 minutes later telling me they couldn't find it.

It seems the team at XXX couldn't find your items. They searched high and low, but nada. Zilch. Zip. Nothing.
However, all is not lost! There may be a chance that we can ship your order directly to you from our Brisbane warehouse at no extra cost!
Just click the button below to see what we can do.

Free delivery is fine with me :-)

    • Sounds like you needed to find someone who knew what they were talking about.

    • What a BS, I just ordered one in the store for $12, hopefully I will get the Hardware!

  • One of my local EBs has had 3-4 of these forever but yesterday when I went in there they'd finally gone. Now I know why

  • Was passing through Lilydale
Picked up one was missing the usb cable so got it for $10

CD Tuner and PS3 Analogue cable too

Think they have 1 more also Chirnside Park should have a couple at least as of 10 AM

Lol @ MELBCentral eb dude offering cd only for $12
    What a f***wit

    • I got one from Lilydale too! No cable also.

Also bought a stand of Eneloops at Dick Smith across the road whilst I was at it.

  • Note, the PlayTV requires the disc to work on a PS3, it does a one time install of the PlayTV software which then allows the unit to function, won't work otherwise and I couldn't find an online download of the software. I also got the PlayTV to work through window 7 media center following this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-uLXB4noWs. Hope this helps.

  • Wish I'd bought that $5 remote at Dick Smith during those crazy sales…

  • -1

    noob question here:

Do I have to necessarily have a PS3 to use this gadget?

    • +1

it says it right in the title (USB TV Tuner for PS3/PC/Linux) and discussed heaps above.

  • +1

Always wanted one of there and finally managed to get, what I was told was the last one this afternoon from the Brookvale store. Rang up in the morning and got them to hold it.

Came clean and packaged in snap lock bag with PlayTV HD tuner, USB cable and driver disc.

Looks like they are all sold out and no longer available. May still be the odd one or two still available if your lucky to find one in store,

  • Looks like its been removed from the site.

  • Apparently you can watch / control your PS3 and PlayTV on any PC (not just VAIO) using Remote Play…anyone tried this?

"For Australian customers who have purchased the Play TV Digital TV Tuner accessory for their PS3, this remote Play software allows you to either watch the TV recordings you have made on your PS3 or watch Live Australian TV on the display of your VAIO from anywhere in the world"
