    is it MFI ?

    • It doesn't say.

      • +8

        you don't say….

    • +2

Kogan sell MFI cables, this is not one of them.

    • -4

      Who cares.

MFi is little more than a marketing ploy to make more money for Apple through licensing.

Don't fall for their bullshit. MFi does not necessarily mean a good quality cable.

      • +1

Can I get a source for that? I've always associated MFI with quality, but granted I'm horribly uneducated when it comes to Apple products, only care for my many iPhone/iPad-eqiupped relatives

        • I'll see if I can find the link. A well known Apple enthusiast site did a big roundup a couple of years back when Lightning first came out and found almost no difference with MFI vs non MFI

        • +1

@shawnsmaggot: Ah sweet, drop it here if you find it. I need a reason to pay $20 for those genuine Apple cables, or buy these ones haha.

        • +1

          @deanylev:

Yeh, hopefully the macroumours forum hasn't eaten the roundup :3

As a phone repairer I comes across cable issues every now and then.

Funny thing is, I've had the infamous "incompatible/non genuine" error message happen significantly more with Apple cables than aftermarket. Go figure.

        • @shawnsmaggot: Haha I've had people complain about that error plenty when using the original wall charger. That great Apple quality.

        • +1

          @deanylev:

Yep, keeps me in business :p

        • @shawnsmaggot:

Yeah, the only cable I've ever had fail was a genuine Apple one. DSE had some good cables recently for $5, but that's a bit dearer than this.

      • +1

MFI doesn't guarantee a better built cable, it does guarantee that with the next OS update, your phone will still be charging.

        • Do you know something we don't?

I've not heard of any plans to implement any more restrictions in the next iOS update.

As it is, the restrictions are already in place, but they are very..unreliable. I use many, many non-MFI cables and rarely see the pesky "non-genuine" message. Even when I do, most of the cable still charges fine.

Out of the 1-2 times I've had the "non genuine" message appear on iPhones, it has been a faulty charge port, not the cable itself.

        • +1

          @shawnsmaggot:

My friend went through 3 of these cheapies…1 consistently threw up error messages, 2 of them broke…

I've been using an MFI cable I got from eBay for $10 for 2m…working flawlessly across 3 devices, and easily tolerates in-car temperatures as well when used with a cradle.

    • +3

      NFI

      • +1

        TIL what MFI is

  • I bought 10. Has to be better then those crappy audiosonic ones from kmart

    • +9

unless… they buy them from… lol

    • +4

a few of us used to do this, you'll soon realize it's better just to buy the proper one.

similar thing happened with micro USB many years ago, after all those $1 ones we went through, we just stuck with the proper ones for $3-4 ones.

    • +1

      broden?

  • +20

i heard this cable is approved not to work after the first week.

  • Do they still work if not mfi

    • MFI just means it has Apple's official approval.

      • +2

For lightning I believe MFI means it has a chip supplied by Apple to authenticate it with iOS devices (Apple actually make the chip, but not the cable). Theoretically an iOS update can stop non MFI cables from working.

Is it an artificial Apple Tax? Yes. Did Apple come up with a way of enforcing their collection of said tax? Yes it looks that way.

        http://www.cnet.com/news/why-im-done-buying-cheap-lightning-…

        • This.

in reality there is little to no evidence to suggest that MFI certification actually leads to an increase in quality, longevity or data transfer rate of a lightning cable. Like pretty much any product, there can be production and quality issues whether the product is certified or not.

The addition of that chip is a REAL dick move by Apple. Not unusual for them, but still really annoying.

    • +6

They will but not for very long.

    • +3

Better off looking at Ali Express for MFI cables. There was a deal on here in the last week or so.

  • +1

cheaper on EBAY if not MFI

    • +1

I got them from kogan on ebay. At least I wont have to deal with kogan for warranty.

  • +3

Maybe dumb question, but any reason not for the iPhone 5 onwards?

    • +3

It's not a dumb question: it's a "dumb" description. All Lightning cables work with all Lightning devices. There's no way (at least from what I've seen/heard/read) to artificially limit which cables and accessories work with specific devices, as long as they all use the same port.

      • thanks for that. I thought that may be the case :)

  • +2

Can’t find that single solitary iPhone 6s charging cable you received with your new phone? Actually I always put it on the power plug below my desk so I know where it is

Sick of taking your one lightning charger cable from home, to the office, then back home again, just to keep your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod charged? I'm unemployed so I don't have to deal with this problem.

  • +16

If not MFI. not worth the packaging it ships it.
Will not last more than one use.

    • I don't really see how you can say that.
Kogan have some pretty ritzy packaging. lol

      • +1

I can tell you right now that the free lightning cable I got from this is not MFI certified. It has worked for over a year now, but it has finally started to show an error message on my ipad.

    • +1

Agree. Non-MFI might work for a month if you're lucky.

  • +2

had one of this when they were giving it out free 2 years ago and it's been working fine.

  • +1

Guys don't waste your hard earnt dollar
They won't last at all and some will refuse to work

  • +7

Last cable I got from them I put in my laptop and the logic board shat itself.

      • +2

It's relevant because the cable was faulty.. It's very common for non certified cables to cause problems on PC or Mac.. They are cheap and last about a week before they stop working anyway.. If you want to risk it go for it..

        • +3

          @shawnsmaggot:
I'm not saying there haven't been issues with logic boards but it's totally common for cables like this to cause problems..

        • -2

          @ScratchMaster:

Totally common? what are you basing this off?

Maybe it was in the early 80's.

Literally every device has has a plethora of voltage regulation features for a LONG time.

      • +2

Your comment is not very helpful and very dismissive. I myself have had personal experience of both an Android phone and an Apple iPhone having their boards fried because the USB/Lightning cables constantly ejected whilst I charged it over night, making the phones pretty much bricked. Personally, I would recommend to the OzB community that while these are a big saving, I would veer on the side of caution if you don't want the headache/possibility of your beloved device breaking through the use of these.

        • -1

How can you say it was the cord at fault, and not the board??

  • +7

I would save your dollar, I got a lightning cable for free from Kogan, didn't even last a month before it stopped working.

I left it on my desk at work and eventually it was picked up by the office cable thief. Joke is on them!

    • +1

      mine is still working fine.

      • +15

        mine is still working fine.

That's because you bought it to use as a shoelace…

        • +1

          i'll upvote that one…

  • +3

Not MFI you be waiting all day for it to charge.

Only positive is if it catches fire Kogan will be responsible.

        Ah! Australian warranty :(

I suppose its actually an alright deal, for $1 its probably worth getting it.

    • Errr… MFi has nothing to do with charging time and output of the cable.

      • I don't know about that.. if Apple charges $4 for MFI certification there is a greater chance the quality is better and so less loss of power through the line.

      • It might work a month or until the next update. Then the iPhone will reject it and only trickle charge.

        • I have more than 5 non-MFI cables that i used to repair iPhones at my workshop.

All of them charge at full speed after 6 months + of use.

Never had a single problem up to 9.2.1

  • Woohoo!! 1 year australian warranty… wonder how many replacements I could score on back of this ;-)

  • +1

Still waiting for my free one…

    • +4

check tomorrow if your postman owns an iphone…

  • +2

Got about two uses out of my free one before it died.

  • It can also be found on their ebay store, if you want to go via cashrewards.com.au.

    Junk

  • +3

These cables are crap. They last about 2 months used every day twice and they die randomly without any visible signs of damage. They will charge all the time and sync 95% of the time though. When they die you can get a free replacement from Kogan; all they do is ask you to take a photo of the cable cut in half and they'll ship out a replacement.

None of my aftermarket MFI cables have died. I've always just lost them or lent them out but I've never had one single MFI cable die on me. The apple ones last about 6 months for me before dying.

    • I just replaced an original note with a 6S+. The original sammy cable has been used every day for the last four years and is still working. I am going to be upset if this doesnt give the same service.

  • I don't get it - does it work with the iphone 5 which has lighting port? I want to buy for family

  • Have had 6 of these… all died\fell apart no matter how careful I was with them. They are rubbish.

  • Any electrical engineers able to come in and throw some truth-bombs down?

The amount of myth and disinformation in here is overwhelming.

Neg me all you like, it doesn't make you right.

  • I got two of the free ones last time from Kogan.

One lasted a week and the other still works but I treat it with kid gloves. These are not cables to treat roughly.

Been using these cheap brand name MFI Lightning cables. On clearance from Officeworks for the past few months and never had a problem with them.
