The Daily Telegraph just came out with this deal and the Harvey Norman website has just been updated to reflect it.

Maybe you should put "PS3" in the title.

    • Done.

  • -4

i thought it was always 399?

  • -7

it has always been this price

    • I thought the RRP on this unit was $499. Recent Myer deal here on Ozbargain had it listed as a bargain at $429.
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/22467

      • yeah you are right, never this price.

    • +1

It probably always SHOULD have been this price IF Sony priced things fairly - but that's a very rare occurrence

      • They still have a negative margin on every console sold. Settle down.

        • it's only sony that's still making a loss on these things
the retailers all have profits at rrp, and possibly even at this price they still might have a 5% profit, otherwise they can never do it and limp away to trade another day

          • @Trance N Dance: That has nothing to do with "if Sony priced things fairly" though.

Regardless, selling at this price would be a considerable loss, not a profit as you're assuming.

  • -4

possible to price match at OW?
    Or doesn't OW stock ps3's?

    • i dont think so, isnt OW ment to be office orrientated? :P

      • -3

Man I price match at Officeworks as well but only when a store that has a deal is nowhere near to where I live. Since I have an Officeworks close to my house, price matching makes more sense than driving to far away location. But some people price match for even 2-3 dollars of a difference. I understand the bargain sell-point but I find it pathetic.

Still, to each his own I guess. I wouldn't bother with price matching if the deal was at a store that's near my place.

  • Me thinks its the cheapest ive seen! Im looking to get one soon. Anyone know how much it would cost me to pop a 500GB HDD into this?

    • +4

I put one in mine for PlayTV, think it was 115 for a Seagate one. Just remember, 5400RPM, 2.5" (laptop) hard drive, SATA II. Faster RPM won't be utilized by PS3, so it's a waste of money to get it, and I think isn't good for it.

This was in December though, a quick check on StaticICE tells me the prices for this sort of hard drive are about 95-105$ now.

      • +1

Thanks for that.Just the sort of info i needed! :D

      • to be fair, 7200rpm wouldnt do any bad to ps3, actually it helps ps3 game installation (if required) a lot quicker.

and btw, wouldnt suggest seagate either, wd always a better performance hd

        • Only reason I went with a 500GB hard drive in mine like Alzori was for PlayTV. I went with 5400RPM because I read a lot of forums saying that 7200 drives overheated the PS3. I have no tests or something to prove that, but I read enough forums to put me off the idea especially since I have the fat PS3 and it's well past warranty.

        • I've got both the Seagate and WD 5400RPM 500GB drives for my PS3 (was swapping between them) and the Seagate is the faster one out of the two.

      about 95 dollars

Nothing will beat the CotD deal for $350.

    • +7

COTD probably had 2 for sale.

      • they surprisingly had enough and the site was up even after the deal started!!!!

        • yeh it was good, it took me 2 days to decide after i saw the bargain on COTD, and i still got in

          they had plenty of stock.

now i am a happy camper :D 5 months down the track, and prices still haven't come down to that. wow!

  • -2

hmmm, was really tempted to pick up a new elite after selling my banned 360 but now i might get this instead and keep my phat for offline/homebrew

    • +1

      And for Linux. Boycott Sony!

Although in your case I would get the xbox because having both consoles gives you access to all exclusives and the quality PS3 exclusives aren't online anyway (e.g. Uncharted and MGS). XBL can be had quite cheaply too at $30ish to 50.

PS. Saw an ad on TV the other day where HN were doing 22 mo. interest free from $300 up. Might still be on.

      • -1

I've had and enjoyed 360 since release but recently got very bored with it, also UC2 is online, as is KZ2, Buzz, Motorstorm 2 and GT5 will be as well. I have a PSP Go as well and like remote play and playing PS1 classics on the PS3 and then continuing them whilst commuting on the Go. That and most of my friends and family who I play online with have moved over to PSN as well. The only interest I have with Xbox now is the Gears franchise, I loved 1 on and offline and 2 was great in campaign but I hated the multiplayer, it wasn't as balanced as the first was.

Oh and lol @ fags who negged my last post, pathetic you not?

      • no seriously there is very little point in having linux on your ps3. ive installed it and all linux is doing right now is wasting space. if you really want a linux system that compares to a ps3 hooked up to your tv go buy a htpc for about 200 dollars (albeit missing the blu-ray drive).
i guess sony has a reason to do this, very little use of linux on ps3's, seriously the average joe wont even know what linux is let alone run it on their ps3. by removing this feature sony can possibly enhance the coding and security of the ps3, in turn making it better for 100% of ps3 users.
bargainhunter open your eyes and see the fact that not everyone gets a ps3 to use it as a linux box (which isnt even officially supported by sony); and besides linux support has been removed since the slim was introduced, only the original fat ones can run linux.

        • +2

You know that you don't actually need to update to 3.21 in order to stay online with your PS3 bargain hunter?

There are a few ways around it, this is the easiest - http://muppet-modding.com/forum/ps3-scene-news/11562-dont-wa…

        • +1

They ripped them out thanks to geohot's potential exploit. I personally don't care that they've removed nix support (I don't use it), but I do care that they've taken away a feature that was originally advertised in the system; I now have the choice to either have no access to PSN and continue with the "Other OS" feature, or upgrade and lose it. It sets one fucking nasty precedent, and is nothing short of a dick move by Sony.

          • @pais: I agree with pais. It's factored into the cost of the system. I installed YellowDog Linux on my PS3 and I enjoy the freedom of choosing that option. But now Sony is removing it. It's still a feature and although some people don't use it, lots of people do. Just because it's not of value to some users, it shouldn't be removed.

It's something like the 60GB PS3 model which happens to be the most expensive one because of backwards compatibility. Imagine if Sony removed that, lots of people will get pissed off. Pais is so right when saying that Sony is only removing this because of geohot. It's stupid ass moves like this that's costing Sony more of the market and gaining the Xbox more users.

            • +2

@ragflan: I'm not really sure why I was neg'd for my comment (since, well, it's the straight truth!), but some further logic to consider:

Sony could essentially pull the plug on any of the features we were promised pre-purchase. Blu ray movie player? Sony can rip that out arbitrarily via a firmware update and we have the option:
To update and have a crippled system (no blu ray)
To not update and have a crippled system (no more PSN)

I don't care about nix on the PS3, but this is nothing shy of screwing the very consumers that keep you in business. It's a very, very nasty precedent. I'd venture as far to say that this could violate consumer law (deceptive/misleading advertising).

              //endrant

              • @pais: I already posted an easy way around the update pais, there's no need to do it yet

                • @[Deactivated]: He's not complaining about the lack of options. He's complaining about Sony's move to remove the functionality.

  • this is quite a good deal from HN

COTD deals are crap because they always sell out of the 'big ticket' items
and their small stuff is just junk in recent times

I dont think that sites like COTD should be able to post sales unless they have plenty of stock, or are made to list how many items they have for sale…..

    • Let's hope Harvey Norman has plenty of stock as well then. Judging by the netbook deal they had yesterday, I have some doubt.

    • To be fair, the COTD sale lasted quite a long time. I bought mine in the late afternoon of that day.

      • I bought it from COTD for $350 as well. that deal lasted for a few weeks (wasnt a daily deal). I was impressed with their service eq speedy delivery, timely cashback etc.

Now seeing how people make fuss about $429 or $398 deals I feel happier about my purchase :)

I just went to harvey norman in fyshick here in Canberra to try and pick one up. This was after I rang them and they said they had 16 in stock. Went to the store and to the games area and the girl said sorry we can't do them for that price, that is the electrical section selling them for that.. So I'm like ok.. and went over to the electrical section. They proceeded to say that they only had 250gb in stock and to go back to game section they will do it for that price. Went back to games and they said no sorry can only do $499 as we are effectively a different franchise to the electrical section. What!?!? In the one store was basically 2 stores and neither of them matches the others prices or what is listed on the harvey norman website! So basically I left without a ps3, extremely confused and annoyed.

    • +5

Yeah HN is a franchised based store where Franchisees 'purchase' the right to trade their business within a specific department.

I know someone who works there in the 'electrical' department, and they arent even allowed to cross the floor into another department to assist a customer in whitegoods/flooring etc! No wonder they are known as Hardly Normal…

    • That sucks. I would try calling them again claiming to be a different customer and ask to speak to the manager if they can't confirm pricing on the 120GB model. Pretty confident there would be a change of tone if you threatened to bring up the matter with Harvey Norman corporate or the ACCC. The only relevant contact information I could find was at the bottom of this page. http://www.harveynorman.com.au/page/1255511667120/best-price…

      • with the best price thing then wouldnt HN have to sell to you at 398 even if this special was from the electronics department? since this is the same product.

        • Good point. LOL.

          • +2

@Livert: i think they're just trying to avoid the cheap sale, and passing the customer onto a different area in circles till they give up

            • @Trance N Dance: Let's hope this is an isolated thing. dwhes, let us know how it goes.

    • +2

Although franchisees would have some leeway on the prices, one would assume that they would all have to comply to advertised sales. Weird.

  • +5

Ok so I called again. Spoke to the computers section manager and he was fine with doing it for $398. Got his name down and the time I rang. Drove back there, went straight to him and he went and got one and put it through for me at that price. Then I walked past the games section and gave them a friendly notice that I had just bought this from their very store for $398. Anyways moral of the story, ring again until you get someone nice who is willing to help and not some rude games section member.

    • +10

Nice one. At least now you have something to do in Canberra.

    • -3

Haha, just wondering, how much you spend on those calls and petrol?

    • You shouldn't have to go to this effort to get a product as advertised. You only let them off the hook to continue treating other customers/yourself badly in future. Let the ACCC know (and maybe ACA/TT)? Maybe Gerry Harvey can explain his views on this given he likes to be interviewed when it promotes his profile/dodgy business… ;-)

    • +1

      Hi dwhes

Sorry to see that we did give you the service that we should there this morning.
I rang the store as soon as I saw your comment to make sure that they were aware of the promotion.
It was a communication issue on our part and i apologise for that.
If you email me your details to:
      [email protected]
i will forward on to the franchisee at Fyshwick who would like to follow up with you.

Thanks and sorry for the running around.

      Gary Wheelhouse
      Social Media Manager
      Harvey Norman

      • So does that store (maybe others) have two different franchisees/sections who can sell PS3s at different prices based on dwhes experience?!

Why wouldn't the price just be updated at in the POS system across all stores (given it's advertised as such on the website)? He rang the store beforehand so at least one manager already knew about the offer.

        • +1

          Hi daydream
There is a seperate franchisee for Computers and one for Electrical.
          The offer is from Computers.
The promotion was communicated to all stores.
All stores were aware of the promotion but as it sometimes happens, particularly around public holidays, communications can slip.
Not an excuse, just an explanation of what may have happened here.
As I said I contacted the store straight away and they were aware.

          Thanks

          Gary

          • @gwhse: Not sure if you have hit your 5 message limit.

Also want to confirm (as Trance & Dance pointed out above) that all HN franchisees are bound by the same HN price matching policy therefore if both sides stock the same item, prices should be the same.

            • +1

              @Livert: Hi Livert

The Harvey Norman Best Price Guarantee applies across all franchisees and all departments.
              You can see it here:
              http://www.harveynorman.com.au/page/1255511667120/best-price…
There are very mimited circumstances where the same product is sold in both depts.
PS3 is one of those products.
It is always best if there is any concern at store level to talk to the franchisee, as they will always be the best person to talk to.
It is in their best interest to have a happy customer who wants to come back!

              Cheers

              Gary

          • @gwhse: Thanks Gary for your reply and for fixing the problem for any other customers. Everything is good now that I ended up purchasing a ps3 for the listed price it just took a lot of time, work and frustration to get there. I've sent you an email anyway if you needed to follow up with anything.

            Cheers,

            David

      • Gary,

Could you tell me when this deal ended?

I printed out a copy of the $398 deal from your web site around 9am this morning. I then headed to HN QV Melbourne around 11am, to be told the deal had ended.

The sales assistant informed me the deal ended yesterday. I then showed him a print out from your web site that had todays date on it and he said he couldn't honour the deal for me.

This is not the standard of service I would expect from HN and will certainly make me think twice about giving them my business in the future.

        Regards,

        Mark.

        • Not sure if he's around today. You'd probably have better luck reaching him here. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/30644/contact

        • Looks like it has changed on the website, now back to $499.

          • @atlas: I think he has a pretty good argument if he has a printout of the end date.

        • +1

          Hi Mark
          I have emailed you.
I have sent an email to the franchisee regarding this.
          Will let you know asap.

          Wont be long.

          Gary

          • @gwhse: Hi Gary,

Thanks for your help and dealing with this matter so efficiently.

You are a credit to Harvey Norman.

            Thanks

            Mark.

  • +1

Should have got it 22months interest free to boot.
Thinking all us Phat owners should rock up with ours and demand a trade up to slim as pointless having phat now! Oh I'll have to remove my 7200 500GB drive first!

    • +1

You keep a nicer looking console :)

      • +1

Yeah. I own the original PS3 as well and it looks so much better than the Slim one. I was going to sell my old PS3 to a friend and buy the slim one but the thought alone brought tears to my eyes. Can't part with my original PS3. Its… mine. my own… my precious.

  • +2

Great price!! I battled to get it for $410 from HN one month ago. Always the way :)

  • Myer Parramatta wouldn't price match :-(

    • Don't you have a HN nearby?

      • Yeah, but sadly I have $337 worth of Myer vouchers that I want to use :-)

  • I'm extremely happy with the price I got for my 250GB PS3, I just ordered it then for $399 from fishpond

    • Link? I can't find it.

      • There was only two left that's why I think it was so cheap but the price has now changed back to $599

    • cheaper to buy here then swap a 500gb drive in and sell the 120gb on ebay for like 20 buks :P

      • If you're the kind of person that plays 1-2 one game at a time, is there any purpose of a larger than 120gb drive?

        • media centre
the ps3 was designed to be a multipurpose multimedia device, music and videos (need lots of storage for videos) and now with the play tv it can be used to record television again need lots of storage for that

  • Manage to get one with 4 years extended warranty for $527,-

    =)

  • its 399 at WA O'conner again btw. wish it would go to 350 though :P
