    Whats the * mean?

      Asterisk Wars

    • Dendy Direct for the promotional price of $5.89 in Standard Definition or for $6.89 in High Definition - I imagine that is the reason for the asterisk.

~$6 for a full 1080p, 5.1 version would be tempting. I can't justify buying anything in SD unless it literally doesn't exist in HD (older movies, T.V. shows etc.)

      • Thanks Juddy, they updated the description after i asked so all good.

  • +3

$5.89 is for SD. $6.89 for HD per the small print..

  • that's cheap!

  • So you get to download and keep an mp4 sort of thing?

    • I highly doubt it

      • What's the difference between download and stream?

        • maybe it plays through an app or something. they wouldn't give an mp4 because that's too easy for pirates

      • So no surround sound, no DTS-HD etc.

        • The HT crew will not give this a second look anyway…

      • +1

Pretty sure this is a digital download for you to keep

    • +2

With Dendy Direct you can stream or download the movie

Something like that… anyone know how the DRM works / will work?

      • +1

According to the FAQ, it uses the "WidevineCdm" extension in chrome. It also appears to me that their version of "download" would be for offline viewing in your portable device.

I have not used the service before, so I'm not 100% sure if I'm right or wrong.

    • +2

      Rep - please clarify ?

      • +17

Agreed, not interested in supporting their undoubtedly crappy DRM.
If I pay for it, (and I do pay for pretty much all my entertainment including donating to Public Radio) it better be user friendly.
If you're going to treat me like a criminal when I give you money, you can go die the commercial death you deserve!

  • +1

Hi guys - to clarify on your questions
    * SD will stream with stereo audio
    * HD will stream with 5.1 audio
    * Download is available on iOS and Android that will allow you to play the file back offline
    * The stream is DRM protected as per distributor requirements so you cannot download the file and put it on a USB stick

Let us know if there's anything else you would like to know!

    • +4

I watch from a PC connected to TV

So i can only stream it, no local download on PC?

      • +1

        Correct

        • +1

Thanks for clarifying im with scubacoles on this one

    • Is download via your own Dendy app (does one exist) or via itunes? Also will this be playable via Apple TV? I'm not sure how 5.1 will work unless its via Apple TV or equivalent

      • Yes, you can download the Dendy Direct Player app from the App Store and Google Play. From there you will be able to download the film for offline playback.

Airplay via Apple TV is not supported but you can Chromecast from your devices or Chrome. We also have a Samsung Smart TV app for 2013 and 2014 models with 2015+ to come.

        • +8

And you guys wonder why your revenue continues to decline year on year?
          What a joke!

App Reviews on iTunes and Google Play are atrocious…
1.5 star average on iTunes (from 25 reviews, 1 star average for current version cause it doesn't work reliably)
2.9 stars average on Play Store (from 16 respondents, 10 reviews, 9 of which are 2 stars or under, 1 star average for current version cause it doesn't work reliably)

        • @scubacoles: Buying the Blu-ray. Which will tide me over until the 3D Bluray arrives

    • +13

And in a few years time when Dendy no longer exists and consequently your software no longer works, everyone's purchased movies will no longer play on new devices.

Avoid DRM people, you are essentially having your purchases held at ransom.

      EDIT:
Digiplex reserves the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Dendy Direct Service (or any part or content thereof) at any time with or without notice to you…Termination of the Dendy Direct Service will not affect the Dendy Direct Products that you have already acquired. However, you may be unable to authorize additional computers to use the Dendy Direct Products.

At least with Blueray, you can always buy a new Blueray player.

      • +5

And you can make a back up copy, in case your missus puts her high heels through the disc you lovingly placed on the floor

      • +9

I agree on the DRM front, but this is $7 we're talking about here. This is not a bad price if you treat it as a rental, for a new release movie that I can watch at home on my TV (either via Chromecast or the PC I've got in my lounge) in HD a week or two before it's released on bluray (for $30).

Unless I'm missing something, the fact that you can "own" this for $7 for as long as Dendy exists seems okay enough to me, at least not the pile of garbage deal that people are making out here.

        • By the time im ready to see it for a second time, ill be able to get it for pretty close to $7 from jb hifi i reckon

        • +8

The problem is it's very misleading to claim this is "owning it". It's basically an extended rental that could end at anytime.

If you treat it as unlimited rental, then that's fine. But the OP directly claims the purchaser is "owning it" and compares it to Blueray.

      • -2

Then don't buy it and stick to physical copies if you're unhappy with the terms of the offer. Personally I've gone completely digital and got rid of my 600+ movie collection. Don't say I miss them one bit.

        • +10

          Then don't buy it

I won't. My post is to help others who might not understand DRM and think they are actually getting something comparable to Blueray.

Personally I've gone completely digital and got rid of my 600+ movie collection.

          Cool story.

Don't say I miss them one bit.

          You will one day.

        • +1

@PainToad: Nope. I have no problem with 'DRM' as it's the only way to actually stream movies. It's significantly better than eating up a large portion of your living room for movies you might only watch a few of times.

        • If you don't have the original discs then that's piracy, but then you may be ok with that

        • @clarky: Could you point to the Copyright Act or the Common law to back up that statement?

        • +2

          @PainToad:

Please stop calling it Blueray its Bluray, no one here can take you seriously if you don't know that

        • @SirFlibbled: if you buy DVD or blu Ray, then rip them, you can't sell the discs. Though you may be able to destroy them and keep your receipts. Someone once told me you are not even allow to rip them but I'm with the belief that it's my back up and I have had disc scratched to prove that.

        • @ReAvenger:

          Blueray

          Fair point.

        • @clarky:
You are correct that it's a breach of copyright to rip a movie and keep it on your harddrive. But purchasing digital copies is not the same thing and perfectly legal.

        • @SirFlibbled: sorry I read you got rid of your 600+ movie collection and assumed you ripped them. But it sounds like you started from scratch and bought UV or something

        • @clarky: Correct. I went totally went to cloud services. Can't be bothered maintaining hard drives for ripped copies or storing physical disks.

Did the same with the Xbox One and PS4. I own about 4 discs. The rest are digital.

        • @SirFlibbled: sounds like the way to go! :)

        • @clarky: It is. The downside is you're forced to use at least 2 services. I use Google Play for Disney movies and UV for other movies. UV allows me to keep my library with multiple services which gives me flexibility in using it.

The only annoying thing are some films like Mad Max wont stream to TV sets. There's ways around it, but it's just distributors playing silly games to their detriment.

        • @ReAvenger:
If you're going to correct someone, get it right. It's Blu-ray, with a hyphen and lower-case 'r'.

  • Does that mean I can download and play back whenever I want on my ps4?

    • Not unless they have an app for the PS4.

    • I highly doubt that.

    • Unfortunately no.

      Our supported devices are:
      Windows
      OS X
      iOS
      Android
      Samsung Smart TV (2013, 2014)
      Chromecast

  • +9

So I can either download and watch on a small screen portable and miss the detail, or stream it in all of it's compressed glory on my big screen?

I'm not advocating piracy, but this is the sort of crap that drives people to it.

    • +1

      Yep. No ps4, I'm out.
Shame, would have got it for sure.

    • Hey there. Compression is variable depending on your Internet connection. In order to get the best quality on your big screen, do you mind telling me what speeds you get when you visit speedtest.net and what device you'd be playing off? That way I can recommend the best course of action.

      • +2

It really shouldn't matter. Sure, my speed might be fine for most of the day. But do I want to deal with the picture degrading or stuttering when congestion hits? Not to mention, that I doubt even your highest bandwidth stream is going to be comparable to BR quality. Can you advise of the bitrate of your HD streams?

If this is what it sounds like, the picture quality is going to be better on my phone than on my TV. Why?

    • +2

      Oh yeah, enjoyed it?

    • +1

Wow don't cut yourself on that edge.

  • I wish Dendy Direct was a UV provider. I'd buy this in a second. But I'm sick of splitting my flicks up. It's Google Play for Disney movies and UV for everything else.

  • +1

Thanks OP I still have a $10 credit I received via the rewardle app for Dendy Direct which I am yet to use so will probably use it for this.

Agree with other posts here having my digital content spread across so many platforms is frustrating!

With "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" coming out soon on iTunes, the director of the box-office smash said on Monday it was a "nightmare" to think of people watching the big-screen sci-fi adventure on a cellphone. "Anyone who makes movies will say: 'Please don’t watch my movies on that,'" J.J. Abrams

    • +3

Though it was ok to follow the original story in a flip book while playing a cassette tape with beeps that told you when to turn the page. That I loved!

  • +2

Cool, ill be keeping eye on the usual channels until the BD is released.

  • Obviously the HD version is going to look better than an SD version, but would an SD version still be good to watch? Like it won't be like watching a bad Youtube video and when there are dark areas in the video you can not see anything at all.

  • +2

Advert makes it out to seem like you will own the product you pay for and purchase. (what a crazy idea right??)

It is nothing more than a glorified rental for which access to can be retracted from you without notice at any time in the future. Not to mention the fact that you'll have to stream the HD (hardly HD, will be compressed badly) version.

This is hardly the definition of 'owning' something.

    Product is not as described.
This sort of business only contributes further to the reason why piracy exists.
ps. The words 'Streaming' and 'HD' should never be used in the same sentence in this country.

  • What resolution is HD? I'm assuming this is not full HD.

    • Hi there - HD on Dendy Direct is 1080p.

  • -1

the movie has earned $1.9 billion in profit, what's the point of paying for it again.
they're already making the sequel, they don't need the money.
if you're going to buy it at least get the Blu Ray instead of this zero-overhead stream.
