Too pricey. It'll be released later this month. US$499 translates to A$550 or so. Of course we won't get it for that but it'll be under $700 I'd guess. Maybe $650, based on the white Macbook (US$999 vs A$1299).

Though I guess some are happy to get gouged on a new product to get it a few days early…

    • +3

With exchange rate variations probably fair to allow the rate to be at .88c which includes bank percentages = $567, then local mark up of 10% =$623

do take into account that we also have GST of $62. = $685 which would be the absolute minimum we have to pay (In the US all prices dont include their local taxes)

So the price being offered here isn't too high, if you really want one that bad, not to wait a few more weeks.

(not taking sides here just making an observation)

As the OP says this is not a bargain, so should it even be here? Not sure it probably would be better in the forums, but it's only a 1 day sale. Guess the voting pattern will determine it's visibility.

      • +2

To be fair the OP didn't say that this is not a bargain, he merely said he's not sure whether it is a bargain or not.

    • If the warranty is not local then this should be stated in the description.

  • +2

very expensive… it'll take a while to get delivered too… so by the time you recieve it, you might only need to wait a week or so longer for the ipads to be released locally

you're paying a ~$200 premium for around 1 week of early use

  • Apple is strict… how did this happened??? LOL
No deal mate… way over priced…

    • My guess? An Australian in the US went to a bunch of different stores and bought a few dozen to bring them back and pay for his trip.

I know someone who took preorders like this. He went to the US and bought them and came back. The cost he was charging included paying for some of his trip.

Personally I'm not that desperate but plenty are.

Alternatively there's nothing stopping someone in the US buying a bunch and shipping them wherever they like.

As Apple product release pattern goes, in 12 months time when they release an update version price will drop, 3G will be integrated in all unit. This might be the first Apple product that I will finally give in to getting one.

In the mean time, check our the HP offering.

    http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/193471/hp_prom…

    • +2

always takes at least one to bring in the old comparison - the HP isn't like a iPad. Its a tablet computer, the iPad is a larger iphone metaphor, the HP slate is a larger windows mobile device.

Doubt if either will reach the same markets. Sorta Rolls vs Porsche. 4 door luxury vs 2 door sports. The only difference being is it depends on your circumstances, which one you think is the Porsche and which one you think is the Rolls and that's why no debate will ever solve it. So why everyone outside the media, who need to stir up controversy because it sells papers etc, even tries, is beyond belief.

As for wait 12 months for the next version, doesn't that also apply to the HP? unless of course you are inferring that the HP won't get an upgrade because it will disappear.

      • That seems to be straining the metaphor calling the iPad a 2 door sports car, it's more like a smart car. Small, low power usage and very low power hardware.

        • Tim - read my POST - I never said which was which - and that's the real point. In some eyes - like your's its a 2 door sports, to another it's a rolls and both are different. So arguing one or the other is pointless.

HP runs shitty WIndows 7, which has not been designed for tablets. Oh sure, they will say it is, just as they claimed Windows 2000 and XP were also designd for tablets, when Microsoft started trying to push this form factor, in 2000.

And everybody releases a new product in 12 months, sometimes a lot more often. What a stupid thing to say.

Saying that, I would wait until Apple release their prices.

      • +1

Have you used a tablet on Windows 7 before?

I've been using one for the past two months (for uni), the HP tm2t, and I think Windows 7 on tablets works very very well. Windows 7 did improve a lot bit tablet wise on Vista.

      • Although many companies release new products regualrly, Apple seem to withhold many features and slowly release them in their later revisions. Look at how many revisions of the iPhone there are.

You sound like an Apple fanboi to me. MS and Apple both have their own strengths and weaknesses.

When you do eventually buy your iPad maybe you should try running Flash on it and see how you go…

As for the deal, it seems like a rather high price to me.

      • +5

He's talking about waiting a year for a more feature-packed iPad instead of rushing into buying the first iPad. Much like the first iPhone had many problems which were addressed and a much better iPhone 3G was released.

And why exactly is Windows 7 shitty? Every OS has it's advantages. By your definition (since Windows XP and Windows 7 suck as tablets) there should be no Tablet PCs in the market and only iPads should exist.

iPads were designed with specific users in mind. For social networking, email, light document processing and multimedia purposes. It was never designed to replace a laptop/desktop. And it cannot. If you think it does, then that's the stupidest thing to say. No one's gonna use an iPad for lengthy documents. No one's gonna replace iPad as a gaming platform. A goddamn PSP has better games. Windows PCs actually have the most number of games as a platform.

Don't go around talking shit about Windows 7 especially when you're comparing it to an iPad. A tablet running Windows 7 can accomplish a ton more than an iPad EVER can. An iPad cannot replace a traditional laptop/desktop. An iPad is as much of a computer as is the iPhone, any Android phone (which are actually more independent than iPhones) and any new Symbian phone.

So get your head out of your ass. iPads are cool but don't go comparing a frickin' iPad to a Windows 7 Tablet PC. Read what ozpete said. He got it right. It's an entirely different thing comparing a Windows 7 Tablet to an iPad Slate.

        • My comment aimed at cakesy.

          • @ragflan: About this comment, I couldn't help myself. Haha. Me troll.

Sorry to all the Apple fans. Apple does produce great products but it's just that.. I already bought an iPad like a year ago. Except it had a smaller screen and it was called iPod.

            • @ragflan: Ars Technica iPad review is out.

              http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2010/04/ipad-review.ars

              From the intro:

"The iPad isn't a big iPod touch—an iPod touch is a miniature iPad that restricts the full multitouch experience in exchange for offering greater portability. With the iPad, in contrast, you get multitouch the way it was meant to be done.

The larger screen doesn't just offer more space to work with—it opens up a different and more immersive user experience."

I'm only half way through the article. So far the iBook and Comic app is amazing. Big downer is similar to the iPhone, it also can't play avi without re-encoding. Transferring your own content onto it is a pain. Let's hope they address them in the next release.

Australia launch date is suppose to be 24 April.

              • @thangcuoi: Don't hold your breath. Apple locks down more things than Microsoft does.

                • @ragflan: Microsoft? Try Alcatraz

                  • +1

@twig: Really whats the issue with this. MS would if they could and did so originally. As it's popularity grew it lost control of this ability. And that is itself lead to much of it's issues.

Those in the know with the iphone and ipad can circumvent may of the "controls" that apple has implemented. And who really does it impact, many of those who would never buy programs or add ons. (No judgment here - just what's happening)

And the Xbox (or for that matter nintendo, or Sony), don't try to control things either??, with new versions to stop cracks etc??

And what would Apple do? They had no retail presence with software, so they started a new channel. Nothing new here, DELL did the same years ago.

The real point is if you are anti-Apple the App store is an issue, if you are Anti MS then Win7 is and so on. MS faces issues that whenever it introduces a new product that it can break apps because they don't have as much control or standards over add on vendors (SW and HW)

What appeals to Apple users is the faster time to use an app as it follows standards. great if you are not so tech savvy. But for the TS, this is seen as control. Both are correct - which comes down to different markets.

  • Buy it then release OZ ver :)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxyPzJ5Vxeg

    • Just shows they have more dollars then sense. There's similar videos with other stuff so it's lost any shock value it may have had and become predictable… I'd fine them for littering with the broken pieces then video their reaction ;-)

    • Too bad it was switched off while they were doing it. This one is better. Will it blend?
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAl28d6tbko

  • I wouldnt touch it, apart from the crappy specs there are reports of poor wifi perf. amongst other issues.

  • -4

Weird how many people won't call iPad "the best computer ever made" until they've "used it." It's almost like they're — what? — sane, I guess.

Apple fans. Even when we get it right, we sound like portly teenage boys, lecturing the maids until they compliment our yachts correctly.

  • -3

    interesting
i wonder if apple will flex it's muscle and pulll this from sale
    and also sue them!

    • On what conceivable legal basis could Apple do either of the things you wonder about?

      • Apple doesnt need a reason, they do things to test the waters, if courts let them take a dip then its worth the effort ;)

    • Buying an iPad legally (eg in an Apple store) then reselling it (eg on eBay or on a website) isn't illegal. It's kinda like selling a 2nd hand iPhone or other device you have, expect it's still "new". You're free to sell it once it's yours. IMHO.

  • +4

As we all know iPad was released in the states. We were able to obtain stock (something which is near impossible to do due to small volume in the wholesale market) in qty. To buy 1 unit in the States is US$499 + TAX Limit 2 per customer.
We understand this is not a "deal" when it comes to savings but we want to give customers the opportunity to get there hands on this new iPad as fast as possible.

    • +3

Just an FYI, on your site, you've incorrectly implied that this iPad has GPS, which isn't the case. Wifi iPads have no GPS.

"Put together your laptop, GPS navigator, iPod and iPhone – you get the dynamic Apple iPad."

      • -3

GPS can be downloaded as an application.

        • +1

??? I thought only the 3G model had the GPS chip??? I though the wifi only model was hardware limited, so therefore you can't add GPS "as an application". Please correct me if I'm wrong.

        • lol novice, you can't 'download' GPS

        • It does not have a GPS receiver in it FFS! I've just lost any faith in your or your company. You clearly have no idea.

Do some research. Only the 3G version is capable of receiving GPS signals.

  • +2

Voting positive, because if you want an imported version a bit earlier than everyone else, with minimum organisation, you have to expect to pay a premium for it to be worth the sellers time.

  • -3

We understand this is not a “deal” when it comes to savings
So why is it listed on ozbargain?

And it's "their hands", not "there hands". So there. :-P

    • Well, it wasn't posted by the rep.. it was posted by someone in the community.. can't blame em

  • This one doesn't have 3G, does it?

    • No, that version hasn't been released anywhere yet.

  • -4

    ipad is shit..

uncompleted product, don't buy it guys~

save your money to buy something else~

    • +2

      Get back under your bridge!

  • -2

i don't buy apple products but i'd rather wait till apple officially supply it before i would buy an ipad

  • Ahh yes reminds me of the old IBM tablet released when they dug up the pyramids, thats some history for you why is this tablet better ?

Because nintendo and sony (psp) have educated the market to make them need this type of device

  • I'll be right… thanks anyway.

  • I'd rather wait for the WePad from Germany. http://www.wepad.mobi/en

  • Not a bargain, cheaper to purchase a mail-forwarding address and get them to send one to you.

  • Could you make phone call with this iPad?

    • +4

No don't be silly, that would be about as useful as having a USB port, or a memory card slot, or a camera, or being able to put any app you want on it.

And to those of you who are waiting until Apple release a version that maybe has some of those features, I have one word… Android.

      • The product description is misleading. It claims to merge iphone into this device.

  • +1

So how does the warranty work with these things?

    • From Apple forum:

"I checked with an Apple reseller here in Aus and they said the 1 year warranty is not international and you need to purchase the apple care to have international warranty." - aliciar

I'd check this with Apple Aust first, though.

Also scope the MacForum for more useful discussion.

  • +1

Just a reminder to all. This is NOT an iPad vs Others voting game. Vote on the "deal" if you are interested or NOT in the iPad at THIS price. Voting which reflects your opinion on the product itself, really belongs at Whirlpool or other sites.

If we follow the latter path, then we just get into Cola type wars where deals for Pepsi are voted down by Coke lovers and then back again, and that's not what we want here.

If you don't like this product just avoid voting, so those interested in the product can use the wisdom of others on the value of THIS deal. Comprende?

Personally I think its too much to pay for a product that's due to be released here in a few weeks time. Regardless of whether I like the product or Not.

    • +3

      But I like Pepsi!

  • +3

    1) Buy lots of iPads
    2) Go to a sucker country where it won't be released for ages
    3) Profit

  • This is much cheaper ($200 in fact) than what Cworld is charging: 16GB: $999, 32GB: $1135, 64GB: $1285 and this doesn't even include shipping! If I wanted to buy an iPad (which I don't :p) I'd just wait until it's released in Australia, which I think is April 24th. Or like other people have suggested use services like priceusa etc…

    • Warning: Never ever buy anything from Computerworld/Cworld.com.au

Huge waste of time and money.
They still owe me hundreds of dollars.

You will be on hold for 30+ minutes. They will say that they wish to help you sort out the mistake, and then accidentally forget about it, or lose your info, forget to return your calls, or relevant staff will no longer work for them, or they'll direct you to another store etc etc. Thieves effectively.

I had to contact the Victorian Dept of Justice, and still never got my money back.

Not worth the risk - just look them up on Whirlpool.

You could try them if you like gambling - just make sure you're familiar with Fair Trading, ASIC, ACCC etc.

  • not a bargain

    • not worth it.

for price vs functionality, u can get better.

  • I was seriously debating about getting this as I figured I could onsell it to a friend or fan if I didn't like it lol

But i think I want to test it out in store first. If I could plug in a USB Modem stick that would be great but no usb.

I saw the Virgin USB Wireless modems / broadband that looked good (Where 3 devices can connect wirelessly to broadband) but the reviews were terrible

I'm voting positive because I like the fact that you are making it available between 1-3 weeks earlier than Apple and I think the price increase is justified for that fact.

More info on the 12 month warranty next time would be great though, ie is it courier pickup or return to base?
