290

Well it looks like steam are going to be giving the small amount of PC gamers who don't currently own MW2 a chance to play it for free this weekend. Everyone who is running steam atm, should know about this if they check their Steam - Update News but for everyone else you should jump at this opportunity.

UPDATE: Does not include Single Player, ONLY MULTIPLAYER!

Happy Gaming :)

Its not a bargain…its a trial for the weekend

    • It's a freebie for the weekend..
Don't see why it's any less of a bargain than the free movie tickets that appear occasionally.. They expire after 1 day!

      • Well it costs you about 2.5GB of your download limit… not to mention the required 12GB of free hard drive space. And after the weekend it will probably be pestering you for the full $90USD so you can keep playing it.

        • "not to mention the required 12GB of free hard drive space."

That's looking for something to complain about.

My WoW playing nephew may appreciate this.
          Cheers.

No download hit for me, I thought most ISP's had Quota-free Steam..
Certainly iiNet, Internode and Adam are quota free..
You have to filter your downloads to "Quota free" servers but that's easy with Steamwatch or Frey's Steam Filter.

If you don't have 12Gb of Hard Drive space to spare, you probably won't have a PC capable of playing the game in the first place!
But seriously who doesn't have 12Gb of spare Hard Drive space? Even my parents do with their 7 year old PC!

@ESEMCE: Okay, just to clarify, I'm not saying this is a bad deal, and I'm sure people would appreciate this. I'm merely saying that you cannot compare it to a free movie ticket. A free movie ticket is almost the exact same thing you get when you pay the full $10-$15. On the other the bargain value of a weekend trial is dubious since it's not something you can normally buy.

            • @inherentchoice: just my thought but what about the fuel to get to the cinemas and also the lunch/dinner i will have when im there before or after the movie. To get a demo or MW2 u would most likely buy a magazine to get the copy of a demo or have to download the trial version anyways.

        • @inherentchoice

Have you used Steam before? Some ISPs have Steam unmetered. Also Steam does not nag you at all to buy it. And you can always delete the files after the weekend is over.

        • And if I go to the cinema I risk being killed when an plane crashes into the ceiling. I think you are looking for something to complain about here and 2.5GB isn't really THAT much now days. Besides you can just burn a copy if a friend has the files already and no, Steam won't nag you to pay afterwards.

That said, usually these sorts of offers come with some sort of discount too. If it's lacking that then its a bit disappointing.

          • @Smigit: My point is just that the value of a weekend trial is dubious.

I think everyone is looking for something to complain about when I'm merely trying to show this deal for what it really is. Seriously… comments like "what about the fuel", "also the lunch/dinner", and "I risk being killed when a plane crashes into the ceiling" all lack relevance. By all means download the game and play it but you don't need to be intimidated by the fact that this free trial might not be worth it.

            • @inherentchoice: Point taken, but putting that it uses HDD space up to install it is a bit ridiculous for a PC game IMHO, thats all.

To be perfectly honest I'm not nuts on the deal either and would be more keen if it came with a 20% off or whatever like they have done with most free weekends. Hell, maybe they will do it when its finally made available as from what I read they are just advertising the preload atm.

    • +2

so what? it gives people the option. Cheaper than renting it.

      • FYI this is a MULTIPLAYER ONLY free weekend.

        • So the Single player is disabled?
You don't have to pay for multiplayer (like xbox Live), so I presume you can download a trial version of the game that will no longer run after the trial has expired.

  • Is bigpond quota free?

    • It's Telstra…
I doubt anything is free unless it's got a Bigpond/Telstra brand on it.
      So probably not, but possibly..

    • +1

This should be hosted by Bigpond, yes.

Just use Frey's filter to make sure.

  • Don't think this is going to make me want to play it - still annoyed with no dedicated servers.

Pretty good of Steam to be offering this as a Free weekend, seeing it's usually older games they do this for.

I suspect the PC uptake of this game was less than impressive - which i hope it was.

    • +1

      I enjoyed MW1 alot more then 2.

    • +3

Single player MW2 was awesome. But multilayer is annoying with no dedicated servers and sometimes hackers.

    • PC uptake was fine. Players HATE Iwnet…including me…but will buy it anyway…it really is a top class game. The cost is miniscule compared to the number of hours of entertainment you can get out of it.

I personally hate the long long load times to get into a game. The number of players out there are miniscule compared to consoles so it can take upto 2min.

I tend to do a lot worse in MW2 than COD4…i wonder if it's because of the dedicated server issue or whether all the good players have moved over to MW2.

can i somehow activate a downloaded retail PC version through steam to play this? i dont want to donwload 2 gb again and i dont have a legit cd key

  • anyone know where to buy this game cheap? i hope steam do some special deal soon!!!!

    • Either g2play: http://www.g2play.net/store/Call-of-Duty-4-Modern-Warfare-UN…
Where you pay and get your key instantly emailed to you.
      Or cdwow: http://www.cdwow.com.au/games/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-2-…
If you want to wait for it to ship but you get the hard copy. I don't think you can use the key for steam in this one though.
You can also buy it directly from the UK store of Steam with a credit card: http://store.steampowered.com/app/24960/?cc=uk
All options for around $50 aud.

Personally I'd recommend buying BC 2 instead. People say it's better than MW2 and it's much cheaper(less than 37 aud). And I don't think Steam will have any deal for MW 2 because it's been out for ages and has stayed at that price since it was released.

      • where do u get BC2

        • G2play works. Or you could buy a copy from someone who has purchased the four-pack earlier. Be careful of scammers though. And NEVER trust anyone on the steam forums… Best bet is to try an Australian based forum.

  • Thanks for posting this, what time is 4PM PDT?

    • +1

      8:30AM SA/NT, 9AM Eastern States.

  • Could you maybe edit title to say starts FRIDAY 9am AEST, no point having US day and time.

    • yeah sure, sorry i should have thought about that before

  • This game is a joke. IW is suffering because Bad Company 2 is currently slaying them. Not worth the 12GB download even if you get Steam content for free. Dedicated Servers > Broken P2P match making

    • I've played bad company 2. I still like MW2 better. more accurate guns…and you can go prone. not saying its a bad game…just prefer MW2's style and presentation.

      • You mean because MW2 has no bullet deviation or bullet drop? BC2 requires a higher skill level. Spraying and praying just doesnt work in BC2 like it does in MW2. And once again dedicated servers FTW.

        • actually, yes that's right…it's annoying…maybe realistic…but it doesn't make for a fun experience.
In fact, a lot of people on BC2 now are using the LMG with red dot sight or acog an just spraying and praying…it works cause they have the magazine size to keep firing until they're down. the LMGs on BC2 are waay overpowered.

But i do agree with you wholeheartedly about the dedicated server issue…i HATE HATE HATE MW2's stupid iwnet…it's a big shame to see such a polished game ruined by crappy matchmaking.

  • Can someone tell me how big the download is?

    • +1

I've been downloading for about 1hour now and its at 50% with ~2.3gb downloaded. So i think its around 5gbs maybe.

  • Why does it say "FATAL ERROR Could not load localisation.txt Please make sure Modern Warfare 2 is run from the correct folder" when I try to run the game?

MW 2 is actually on sale now. =O
    15% off…. 51 usd, bringing it to a total of 54.71 aud.

Call me paranoid but did they just raise the price from 50 usd to 60 usd then have a 15% discount? If not, then I apologise… but if they did, that's just sick.

g2play is cheaper too, only 50 aud there. But then again you will be buying directly from Steam so that's a lot less 'riskier'.
