given that the title could have a few meanings , i have always wondered if the title character had in his posession a stringed instrument

    • Actually, no - the main character, Tevye (a dairyman) does not seem to have a stringed instrument.

The precarious existence these characters led in the Russian town of Anatevka in 1905 is likened to the precarious perch of a fiddler on the roof.

The play begins with Tevye saying:

"A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But in our little village of Anatevka, you might say every one of us is a fiddler on the roof, trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without breaking his neck. It isn't easy. You may ask, why do we stay here if it's so dangerous? We stay because Anatevka is our home. And how do we keep our balance? That I can tell you in a word—tradition!"

      Clip here

And you can see a fiddler, playing on the roof, and elsewhere, at different times during the play.

$79.90 is a considerable sum for a poor Ozbargainer, though if I were a rich man….

    • Was about to make the same joke. You beat me to it. Well done, sir.
