  • How much to unlock?

      $25 from an external service

but could be free with an online chat with Optus - say you are going overseas

      • +6

Why does going overseas make a difference? They will still say yes it can be unlocked but you still have to pay a fee

        • +5

Well me and others on whirlpool and ozb have confirmed that it works, free of charge

Also note that I did this a few days after I received the phone and was not an existing Optus customer

        • -7

@babo: Yes, but what's the rationale for them giving the unlock free? If I was the CSR I would tell the customer if they can afford an overseas holiday then they can afford the unlock fee.

        • +5

          I wouldn't know I don't work there.

If it works, why question it? Can't hurt to try

    • +3

$80 from Optus if you haven't recharged that much.

Provided that you've recharged your Prepaid service to a minimum/accumulated amount of $80 there is no fee, otherwise a fee of $80 will apply to unlock your prepaid handset regardless of the amount you've already recharged.

      Optus.com.au/unlock

      • Do i have to recharge the bundled sim card/number, or any optus sim that i already have. ?

        • Not sure.

        • The bundled sim sadly :( But… you can port your number across to the new sim

  • +14

The description on the website says it is machine-washable. I guess that saves me from using micro-fibre cloth in cleaning the phone?

    • +10

Its not mower-resistant though. Mowed over mine, phone 0 lawn +1

      • +12

How does the lawn win in this scenario?

        • Biodegradable fertilizer?

        • +1

          @SkyPuppy:

Silicon = rocks. Plants = paper… Lawn wins.

      • Read the owners manual next time… it clearly states not mower proof !!

  • -1

Can I put android on this?

    • +1

You can as there are some Chinese phones which run both Android and WP. Problem is Android runs 1 trillion tasks in background and the processor on this phone will explode.

      • Windows phone can be pretty annoying shutting down processes to conseve memory all the time. Keep having to reopen the app store so the phone will just update the apps. Takes around 2 hours to put windows 10 on. Then you have to do factory reset to install language and keyboard. Then you have to update all your apps, which can take another hour, unless you sit next to the phone and keep the app store open. I think I'd rather have some lag and be able to have stuff get done in the background. Lol

    • +2

According to the product features it already has "Android 5.0"! :)

  • Android would run poor on these specs I'd imagine.

This phone is moto g 2013 specs. So if you want an Android equivalent that would be the go. However the moto g camera isn't as good and doesn't support the bands this phone does.

    • It designed to integrate with your windows ecosystem eg office 365 one drive outlook etc.

    • +10

      Seriously?

        Wot…there's comments? :o

  • FYI Microsoft says the Lumia 640 will get Windows 10 at some point:

Have Windows 10 (Insider preview) running on mine at the moment. solid, speedy and great value for $.
RE: Unlocking - Use Google and find some tech/dev sites. They supply method and software to unlock this phone.

      • Set it to production builds, its the same versions as the released builds.

      • how did you get windows 10 on it , i downloaded windows insider but it says ther are no builds available ?

        • +1

get the Upgrade Advisor from the Store. Run it to check for compatibility and then it offers Win 10.

        • @BobD: thank you :) , are there any good new features to know about? at the moment all i can see is a slightly nice interface?

    • +1

My wife's phone L640 is already running Win 10. So is my Lumia 730. Works like a charm.

    • It became available a few weeks ago via the Upgrade Advisor app. Haven't tried the new OS yet though

      • Thanks for the info - downloading Windows 10 now. Any massive noticeable improvements?

        • +1

I upgraded my Mrs Lumia 640 to Windows 10. Some new fonts and a cleaner layout are what I noticed straight away. The good thing is I didn't notice a speed decrease or anything like that. Seems really stable. I did notice however it chewed the battery as she would easily get a days usage out of it and with Windows 10 it was dying at 4pm. I had to turn off a lot of push settings and funky things like the double tap to wake function. There was another update to the phone a couple of days ago so that also might have fixed the power drain issue she was experiencing. But… as of right now its working perfectly and it easily lasts into the second day.

        • +1

Not what I expected, chews more battery, Cortana slowed right down, USB on the go still doesn't work, Windows backup copies pictures multiple times to the PC, SMS still not accessible anywhere except on the phone itself. Then again, for what I paid for the phone it's OK.

      • Not for Telstra 640's. We're still waiting. Advisor says to be patient!

  • Anyone got this ,i need to know it worth moving from android to windows

    • You have to do your research. I have both a windows phone and Nexus (android) tablet. Love both of them.

I use my phone with minimal apps and tablet for everything else. It's true there are more limitations with windows than with android. (App Eco system isnt as big). And of course your purchased apps won't go over to windows.

Oh phone specs is average but the price is great. I bought for my wife for 170 last year.

    • +2

I have the XL version. I love Windows Phones, I feel like such a hipster.

      • +3

lol i think hipsters are all Apple :)

        • I thought they would be using old nokia tech like 3210….

You know the saying color screens are too mainstream.

    • +8

I have this phone (Telstra though). Paid $179 at JB a month or two ago. It replaced my Nokia Lumia 925 which died and could not be resurrected. I loved the Nokia, and I love this phone. I only ever owned Android phones before, and there is definitely a lack of apps for Windows, but the reality is I used my phone for phone calls, messaging, email, calendar, social media and general surfing - I don't need seven apps to make fart noises. I highly recommend this phone,

      • +1

True. I have minion fart gun for that.

    • +2

Purely depends on your need. Do a basic lookup on Windows store for your app requirements. If it meets your needs, switch. Else stick to Android. I use WP. I love it. Having said that, there are quite a few silly issues here and there.

    • +1

I haven't got this, I've got a Lumia 920…you'll wanna get ready for snappy UI response & great battery life first & foremost! ;)

You'll also find there's not the same huge range of Talking Cat apps that are available to Android & iOS users…but you'll learn to live without them… :P

    • +2

In short, no. Even Microsoft has pretty much thrown in the towel. Developers just can't be arsed developing for a third phone that constitutes 1% of the population. As mentioned there is a distinct lack of farting apps. A deal-breaker if you will.

  • +2

    Target call it the Lumina…cool!

    • +1

      LuminaTar(get) confirmed

  • Pretty sure Virgin sims will work on this unlocked? Can anyone confirm?

    • +3

Yes, Virgin sims will work on Optus-locked phones. Virgin uses the Optus network.

      • +1

Max is right, works well on my amaysim, as long as it is optus network then will work

    • Any carrier that uses the Optus network should work

  • I'd have a hard time recommending this phone for $100 considering Androids with similar chipsets can be had for less.

That said, a + from me because still not a bad price for the phone.

    • Which Android phones?

      • +7

There's no $99 Android phones with these specs you can buy from a local retailer. You can get cheaper Android phones with slightly better SoC, but you won't get the 720p IPS screen or 8mp camera. This phone purely from a hardware POV is an incredible bargain. Its just whether windows phone has the apps you need, you can live with the poor browser and poor multi tasking. Most people who are in the market for a budget phone and don't need apps like snapchat and Google apps probably are satisfied.

      • LG Leon, ZTE 4GX Buzz…camera not as good, but they work fine because similar SoC and of course better app selection. Not to mention when cost of unlocking is considered, this phone is $125.

        • -1

Leon is RRP $149, has a smaller screen, lower res, poorer camera and shorter battery life. Ditto Buzz for $99. The Lumia 640 blows these two out of the water.

        • @blamesociety:

Leon was $69 on special at Big W recently.

        • -1

          Fair enough.

      • Huawei Y635 $69 @ Coles.. not sure when deal expires.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/241897

    • Not sure why I got negged, I said I like the deal (hence the + vote), just that this phone won't be my foremost recommendation for the $125 price tag it carries after unlocking.

  • +3

I tried the Lumia 735 for a month last year. Awesome hardware for the price but in the end I went back to Android for the apps.
The apps that are on WP are generally very inferior, when they exist at all.

    edit
google tells me you can install a custom Android ROM on these now.
I'll try. If this is true then this is AWESOME

    • This I gotta see.

  • +1

Pretty tempting for those who are Win curious (such as myself), but it's optus locked, darn

  • -1

I bought one in january when I went prepaid

I'm happy with it as I'm not a hipster

  • +1

Plenty of stock in SA. Marion Reynella and Edwardstown should all have a few in stock.

  • -4

Windows phone never again. Will probably do it again cause I love it, but never again. Never again.

    Holds iPhone tighter.

    • +4

Personally, it's probably the nicest OS out there visually but crippled by the quality of apps and lack of Google services.

      • +1

Couldn't have said it better myself. I still have my Lumia 1020, pull it out every now and than and just get bombarded with good memories of the Os experience, but yea zero support or quality in apps, just isn't enough to survive.

  • +4

For anyone that will try and purchase this, go to this link: https://www.facebook.com/targetaus/app/478909918920794/

You can LIVE chat with them and see the current store stock status without ringing or even going in-store.

Just a little tip, has helped me many of times with Target OzBargain deals.

    • Good tip however I tried this and found they provided stock levels but on two occasions didn't reflect what was actually in store. Ringing had a better result in QLD.

    • I tried this and was informed that their info was up to 48 hours old. They suggested that I ring my local store and they had stock. However, if you didn't ask them about the deal then the price was $159. It may be cheap but they weren't advertising it in store.

  • +1

If you don't have any luck at your local Target Optus are selling it directly for $129. Yes it is $30 more but saves you from running around.
    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaidmobile/microsoft/lumia-6…
Looks like the price is good till 1 May

  • Got one. Thank you OP. One more in stock in Chatswoos Westfield.

  • If anyone can find one. DSE is selling them for 75. I think Voda and Telstra? Can't remember exactly.

  • -1

Resolution seems quite low, any comment?

    • +2

Better DPI than the monitor you're probably reading from right now.
      1280 x 720 for 5" is plenty.

      • Actually it's exactly double that and it's significantly further away compared to how I hold my phone :(

Edit: Res is double, not DPI

        • low for a $99 phone ? err dont think so…

  • -3

Just grabbed a dick for $71.60.

  • +3

Bought one in December and very happy with it. Has most of the popular apps I need for social networking, banking etc. Can't imagine a better phone for the price.

Screen is nice and I'm pretty sure its Gorilla Glass too. Great value.

  • -1

Hey guys can this phone run the google maps app flawlessly?

    • +5

You wouldn't bother if it's for navigation, the bundled Here Drive + is vastly superior in terms of GPS utility.

  • Sorry guys, might be a dumb question.. Is 1GB RAM enough? My samsung Grand Duos is 1GB RAM and with almost no apps other than what come default it has only 200 MB left for work.. with music and videos it just start struggling after some times of use..

    • +2

Fine for WP phones. I've got an 830 (Since release in Dec '14) and it's running a similar spec. Running WM10 on it too.
WP is much better than Android with it's mobile memory management.
"App-gap" is the only bother with WP. Here's hoping once UWP really ramps up that it builds the catalogue of apps.

      • Thanks Maz78

    • +3

Windows phones are pretty memory efficient so they can get away with 1GB RAM. The Lumia 640 certainly isn't a speedster but it's stable, has good battery life, a pretty good camera (in good to moderate lighting)and a great screen for the price. The apps (or lack of them) is the negative to Windows phones as many people have already mentioned. For $99 bucks you might like it.

      • Thanks darmz

  • +9

    http://tinypic.com/r/2py9kjq/9

Surely this is a better price for a guaranteed unlocked version?

Edit: $110 for an unlocked Nokia 640 lumina, plenty in stock at my local k-mart.

    • That's certainly a good option for some.

      • Yeah I thought so, they also had $30 optus sims for $10 and $15 for an optus E5251 wifi modem.

    • Where's your local K-Mart?

      • Close to his house…

  • I tried my local Kmart 3915 and they had this phone for $159 only.

I bought two at Target Somerville (VIC). I've unpacked one and you certainly shouldn't pay full price ($159) for it as the Office Personal redemption expired in August 2015. The included SIM expired in March 2016. Looks like old (very) stock.

    Charging the battery now.

  • None left at Target in Brisbane CBD or Buranda. It looked like the CDB store had it priced at 159 for the stock that had already sold.

  • Bought 2 from Target Southland (VIC) there were no tags that it was on sale but it scanned at $99 as advertised on their website. There's only 1 more in stock now.

They also had the model without Optus branding which was $289.

  • Dubbo target still has one.

  • Got the last one from Highpoint Target.

  • anyone know any cheaper places to unlock this $25 seems a bit much ? last optus phone cost me like $4?
