This would make me switch from Spotify since their student services don't work over here.

    • +6

Damn that sucks. Overall I think Spotify has the best app between GPM, Apple and Spotify.

      • How much does each of these services Charge per min.?

Also, is the $5.99 of this deal in Au$'s or what?

PS How does this deal compare with a $250 Lifetime sub. to this 4th service:

        • Calm Radio (cf CalmRadio.com)
        • Yes in AUD. Other services are all $12/month, barring Tidal which is $24/month. Not sure about calmradio but they don't appear to be an on demand music streaming service in the same way Apple Music etc. are

        • @Autonomic:

Tidal is only $20+ a month for their high fidelity service, their premium package is inline with their competitors.

Apple now deletes music files off of Apple Music customers’ hard drives.
      1. Once music files are deleted from a computer, users must have wifi access to listen to them via Apple Music.
      2. Apple’s software isn’t great at finding “matches” for music files, especially rare live recordings or alternative versions of popular songs.
      3. Users can get songs back from Apple after they’re lost, but they must potentially spend hours and hours retrieving them.
      4. Apple converts all files to mp3 format, meaning that higher-quality recordings in WAV format will be lost forever.

Is Malcolm's NBN capable of efficient streaming?

I prefer local storage for frequent files.
      http://finance.yahoo.com/news/did-apple-steal-artists-music-…

      • -2

So, has anyone who's lost such music from their hard drives ever sued for damages?

I suppose they may have unknowingly signed away any rights they might have had, when signing up w/ Apple.

But could ACCC find some AntiCompetitive fault in Apple's alleged deleting practices?

      • +1

Apple Music doesn't delete anything unless YOU tell it to.

It doesn't touch anything on your main computer.

      • +1

Apple Music does not delete content off your hard-drive. And the article you linked, the author is referring to iTunes Match, not Apple Music, and is frankly too stupid to know the difference.

        • -2

Read the post again - it says "Apple MUSIC" & posted via Yahoo Finance for investors - from real experience.
I just passed the info. Up to you if you want to ignore it.
          Cheers

        • +1

@taki: I did, and I read the original post by the person who publicised the issue. Yahoo has just sourced their information directly from them, and they had no idea what they were talking about in the first place. Why am I so confident? Apple Music doesn't physically touch files that don't belong to it. If you import a file you've downloaded outside of Apple Music or you've created, it wants nothing to do with it.

          I'm not ignoring anything.
          Cheers

        • @Swordling: Thanks for the info. I didn't follow the original source as I don't trust/need anything Apple Inc, unless they open their software. I made this decision when Microsoft killed OS2 (the most Object oriented OS @time).
Since then I'm out of niche markets & mostly for Open SW, as I don't want to waste time on something that won't last long (enough).
I hope you understand my 'biased'/ethical approach. I sacrifice my correctness for the good of all…my life philosophy

      • Here's another blog post on someone losing their own music files over Apple Music: https://blog.vellumatlanta.com/2016/05/04/apple-stole-my-mus…

      • This explains it pretty well.

    • I'd like to explore that claim (which, at this stage,
      I neither Dispute or Accept.

      What's included?

Does one who saves content (to their Apple device) LOSE is all, when why drop the month-by-month service?

Does it include non-musical content, eg, CBC's "The Debaters" show podcasts (which I used to buy w/ Apple credit)?

What else makes this service { Rock | Suck } for you, the reader of this reply?

      Tnx.

PS My first reaction to the title of this post was:

      • Great! yet ANOTHER distraction for uni students!
(Cf recent show on students BUYING paper / dissertation writers
to help them graduate (by writing for them) via app "CBC Radio"

Is such a music service good value for Uni students?

    • +2

Not sure why you're being down voted. I used to use spotify for several years and then switched to apple music with the 12 months free with Telstra. The difference is massive. Spotify runs circles around apple music.

I mostly listed to audiobooks at the moment which is why I haven't gone back to spotify yet but as soon as my apple music subscription runs out, i'll definitely be going back.

    • +8

the website is 'UNiDays' which implies it's for uni students

    • +15

Hi mate, I'm a highschool student myself and I'd obviously be disappointed as well that it doesn't apply to us, but that doesn't mean it's a bad deal for those it applies to.

      • +7

A logical high school student!? You're a rare breed.

  • Seems really confusing? Can someone walk me through the steps… my Unidays email account is different from my itunes email account

    • it will still work. go to your account in itunes, than subscriptions. click on apple music and it will have the new student price. click on that anf verify your status though Unidays and it will push you back to itunes with the verification done

      • When I go to subscriptions, I see the 'Student (1 Month) Verification Required', so I click it. It just opens my browser and leads me to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ where it's just a page to download iTunes?? Although I already have iTunes? so confused

        • I'm having the same issue :(

        • I tried it on Windows proceeds seem messy couldn't get it to work, tried on Mac, worked just fine, so you might have to wait for them to get it working on Windows?? Otherwise if there is any setting to allow your browser to launch other programs, you probably want that on.

      • Try a different browser, maybe IE/Edge. or Chrome?

  • +4

Wow the first Apple product/service I've purchased that I feel is a bargain haha! Amazing link cheers OP. So long Spotify! You've been good but the value is irresistible

    • That's great! 🍏

Apple Music is available on Android

    • -1

      Are you vegan too?

  • +2

I would jump on this, except my previous experience with Apple Music is terrible.

Their app on Android is quite bad in terms of usability and load speed although I do not know what it is like for iPhone/iPad users. Apple Music on iTunes feels bloated in terms of UI/UX and there have been recent news of wiping people's library on their hard drive (it sounds like it was users' fault too though).

  • Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole personally. Buyer beware… it is still Apple https://blog.vellumatlanta.com/2016/05/04/apple-stole-my-mus…

    • Please let us know when they're Lemons 🍋

    • +3

This is an absolute load of crap. If this actually happened, why, three months after Apple Music launched when millions of free trials expired was there not outcry of people with this exact problem? Because it didn't happen, the author did something wrong and lost their stuff. They probably deleted their music and then downloaded it again from AM, thinking AM stored byte for byte copies of their content.

The fact is, Apple Music IDs songs by things like metadata and sound fingerprint (like Shazam). If it finds a match it adds an entry into your iCloud music library that says, hey John Smith has this song, let him play it in Apple Music without having to buy the song from iTunes. Then you can play it. If you want to save it for offline use, you click Make available offline – simple. After your subscription expires you can no longer play the offline music, but be aware that Apple doesn't delete your entire music library and replace it with DRMed versions (otherwise every one with an expired trial would need to pay to play their old music). Furthermore, Apple Music match is flaky at best, sometimes it matches stuff, sometimes not, I'd bet that most people wouldn't be able to match their music library unless all their content was purchased from iTunes, in which case is already on iCloud and doesn't require Apple Music to stream it.

For the record, I'm not an Apple Music fan. In fact, I hate it, the UI sucks, the pricing ($11.99) wasn't worth it and the match capabilities are anything but polished. I can't stand what they did to the old music app and think that the learning curve for Apple Music is far higher than it should be. I develop iOS apps and am pretty techy but the music app is a usability nightmare even for people familiar with various UI semantics. That being said, there is one thing Apple Music doesn't do, and that is deleting your music library. The notion that that's possible is inherently flawed, millions of users and a bug that affects one person or a few in some random support thread, I doubt it.

      • I agree with your comments re the music app. When Apple Music came
Along they proper stuffed it. I downloaded CarPlay for for free and it's incredibly simplistic but that's all I ever wanted

      • +2

not outcry of people with this exact problem

        Um there was?

        Lol, talk about confirmation bias.

        • +1

Millions of people trialled Apple Music, why haven't millions complained about losing their libraries?

    • Author is talking about iTunes Match, a different service that isn't included in an Apple Music subscription, and is too stupid to know the difference. I read that article and to me, either that person had no idea what they signed up for, or just pulled a massive publicity stunt to get their music 'out-there'.

      • Comments are closed.

I think you've hit the nail on the head re: publicity stunt.

      • +1

AM does include iTunes Match but matched songs obtained via Apple Music Subscription cannot be played without an active subscription. Matched songs via regular iTunes Match can be played even after subscription expires and do not have DRM but they are unique to each account so you can't upload them, etc.

        • +1

          Spot on.

iTunes Match matches the music in your library with iTunes Store copies and isn't DRM protected.
Apple Music matches the music in your library with iTunes Store copies and is DRM protected. It also gives you access to the streaming catalogue. This has some pretty good info on it.

  • +6

why bother when spotify is better.

    • +2

Because it's half the price and this is ozb.

    • Spotify will most likely have student offers soon as they already have it in the US and UK

  • +2

I'm a fan of most Apple products.

However, Apple Music is a terrible and doesn't follow the Apple philosophy. They should have just bought Spotify and used their platform for music.

    • +3

Can't agree more. Apple is usually pretty good with similplicty and designing natural user experiences. Apple Music is a massive exception. The entire feeling of the product is off. iTunes is a mess, the new music app is a joke, android's Apple Music might be better but I dare say so.

      • +1

Nah. Android app is trash in my opinion. It is buggy and it is hard to search and play songs; and playlist system was (is?) broken.

        • Sounds exactly like the crappy iOS Music app, except they broke the default Music app as there is no separate Apple Music app on iOS.

        • Spotify is the seperate Apple Music app :-P

    • Spotify definitely has an overall nicer interface, but then again it did launch 8 years ago compared to apple music which is less than a year old. Rumours are that there's a significant overhaul coming at WWDC, something to look out for.

  • +2

Just something i've read recently. Apple music deletes stuff off your PC if you install it there. Uploads to their servers, deletes off your PC, then streams it back to you when you want to listen to it. Can't access it if your sub runs out though.

    • +1

This isn't accurate. When you install the app it uploads any songs from your library that aren't in the iTunes stores to the cloud. Then you have the OPTION to delete it off your hard drive and stream it, or re-download it later. All music on your hard drive remains untouched on your hard drive until you explicitly choose to delete it.

      • +1

Unfortunately its been buggy for some people and didnt get given the go ahead before doing it. All programs have bugs

  • +5

Combined with ITunes cards from officeworks which are always 20% off, makes it just $4.79 👌🏽

    • You can do that?

      • Yeah you can. I've been paying for Apple Music for the last few months with discounted iTunes cards.

        • Well that's good to know thanks!

  • +7

If only spotify offered student discounts :(

  • Bit of topic, but does anyone know if you can change the Apple ID associated with a subscription? Want to change the Apple ID on the 12 month Telstra trial.

  • Finally! Something useful from my uni fees ;)

    Thanks OP, great deal.
For those having issues with Chrome, I had to change my default browser back to IE so iTunes would launch itself from the web site. Once that was done it worked a treat

  • GUYS THIS MIGHT BE GOOD! THIS WILL MAKE SPOTIFY OFFER A 50% DISCOUNT LIKE ITS AMERICAN SITE

  • Nice. Hopefully still around when my free apple music sub from telstra finishes up later this year.

  • For those who want to listen on Spotify, you can use spotify family, i pay 7$ a month, so it more expensive than Apple 1$ but not bad :) especially for not uni students

    • The minimum you can get Spotify family for is $12 plus $6 according to the website?

      • Spotify family: I have 4 friends and we all shares the cost!! so each person pay 7$ a month, I have my own premium account, and so do my friends

        • +4

Do you go around and collect $7 from them every month?

        • @captnrosco:
you can set up the automatic online payment. But yeah it's just another way to get cheap in Spotify. Find your trusted friends and it's easy to do :)

        • @captnrosco:

Same here, I asked my 3 other mates to transfer me a full year subscription in advance. Everybody wins :)

  • This is a great deal. However when I click redeem on the UniDays website it launches iTunes (On a Mac) and has a popup saying 'This feature requires Apple Music. To use this feature, make sure Show Apple Music is selected in Preferences'. But it is selected at preferences so I have no idea how to get past this. My Apple email and UniDays email are of course different. Would this be causing the issue?

  • I wish Spotify has this deal !!

  • +1

What a mess. Here's instructions to follow
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205928

  • Just signed up, I never took advantage of the 3 month free trial so I'll give apple music a chance and then worst case, cancel it before the $6 starts being taken from my CC.

How does Apple Music compare to Spotify in EDM / Top Charts sort of genre?

    • If you like it, instead of CC pay with a 20% off iTunes card for a whopping $1.2 saving

  • Geez so much complaining. It's six dollars a bloody month. Signed up.

  • I've just jumped in this deal today. I'll use this for now, bit if Spotify have a similar deal, I'll jump back to Spotify.
They have more songs that I like but finding and downloading music on Apple music is cumbersome =-=".

  • That isn't actually 50% off. No deal!

  • Seems UNIDAYS also offers 20% off at LoveHoney now… Welp. That's just the discount every student needs!

Joking, I'll stick with the music discount I think. Cheers OP.

  • I'll stick with Google Play Music, always wanted to move over to Spotify, but there doesn't seem to be a way to transfer my playlist's over. :(

  • Spotify is the winner for me, yes everyone has an opinion but the App is so good, the social media aspect is amazing (follow friends, collaborate playlists etc) and the family offer is really good, me and 3 other mates pay ~$7 each for premium :)

  • -1

I prefer to own my music

  • Don't forget the regular 20%+ off iTunes Store gift cards at Woolworths etc to pay for your subscription.
