  • are they any good?

    • +24

      As good as any paracetamol.

      • I prefer ibuprofen anyday. Paracetamol does jackall for me lol.

But +1 because it's a good deal for others

    • +8

just like any other generic brands

      • +24

which is the same as any name brands as well.

        • +1

          very true, upvoted you

        • +2

Untrue - Panadol brand tablets have a coating which makes them easier to swallow and less likely to leave a bad taste in your mouth. Whether that's worth a 1000% premium is debatable but it's false to say the products are identical.

        • +11

          @lukeolivie:

I don't think anyone is really suggesting "complete identicality" but rather the active ingredient is "the same", eg 500mg of paracetamol, tablet for tablet..

          A "1000% premium" isn't easy to swallow.

        • @lukeolivie:
Other cheapie can be coated, capsule shaped whatever.
I mean the actual drug you are taking is the same, but you knew that.

        • I knew that, but it's possible others browsing the comments section might not.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

96 Panadol osteo for $8. It's not a huge premium for a smooth coating and considering you're only taking 6 a day vs 8 for 500mg panadeine. it turns out to be something like $10 a month a difference.

Yes it's the same drug but i take Panadol osteo because it goes down easier.

        • +1

          @tony abbott:

The Panadol Osteo price varies by pharmacy - shop around a bit, you can get them at $5.99 or even $4.99.

        • @tony abbott: Capital Chemist at the University of Canberra's Health Hub building is selling the Osteo Panadol 2 for $10. May be nationwide?

        • @nismo: Agree. Panadol tablets work a little faster than the generic brand because of their inactive ingredients that help the absorption of the paracetamol into the system. But if a person is in so much pain that he/she cannot wait for the generic panamax to take into effect may be they should call the ambo since it's not a big different between them.

        • @trevorinski9: calling the ambos in Victoria may not do much for you. I recently had a 40 degree temp that completely incapacitated me. My wife called the ambos but all they would do was talk. They would only provide transport to hospital after 3 or 4 hours. Is it better in other states?

        • +3

@tony abbott: Panadol osteo is a slow release version vs regular panadol/paracetamol. It is good for those with osteoarthritis and other long term pain conditions that require regular daily doses of painkillers. For a one off or short term pain relief panadol osteo is actually very slow to work and regular panadol/paracetamol is a much better alternative.

    • They tend to 'stick' to my throat/tongue etc so I usually break them in half to take.

      • Agreed. All the cheap ones don't have a nice coating on them and if you don't swallow them just right, be prepared for a nice bitter powder in your mouth. Paracetamol is so cheap anyway, even Panadol it's worth paying for a better brand with a coating.

      • +5

        I just chew them

    • +2

I have been using paramax for several years, they are just as good as panadol and I always buy 100 tabs for $1. Even in hospital emergency room they say its panadol but actual its paramax, must be part of budget cuts.

      • +10

If you'd been using it for years one would assume you'd type the name correctly at least.

  • that's like 1 cent per tablet!

  • lol, whens the expiry date?

    • -7

      8.95 for postage..

      • +10

Huh? How's the postage related to its expiry?

        • +3

          8.95 for postage..

Perhaps he expects postage to take 79 years and 3 months thus necessitating an expiration date of August 2095 to prove acceptable.

      • +2

Buy 100 boxes the you get free shipping.

      • i thought this was only an online deal..

      2018

  • -1

    this is the regular price

    • +3

I paid $1.89 per pack last week from Chemist Warehouse, so no.

      • I've always seen them as this price at all the chemist warehouses in my area. Maybe some stores stock it at this price (more competition around).

  • +4

These are normally $1.99 from Chemmart, so it's a 1 dollar saving :)

Also a lot of people take Paracetamol for all kinds of pain, but for sprains, bruises and fractures coming from minor injuries, ibuprofen is more effective. The same goes for menstrual pains and fevers — use ibuprofen (as it has stronger anti-inflammatory properties)

    • +2

If needing regularly every 8 hours, best to take paracetamol, less adverse effects.

      • +2

There was a study released last year about long term effects of paracetamol as well, although ibuprofen long term worse. http://www.nhs.uk/news/2015/03March/Pages/Is-long-term-parac…

        • +1

Ibuprofen short term is really bad for me - I end up with a stomach ulcer.

At least paracetomol doesn't screw with your stomach lining, just have to be sure to keep under 4g per day.

        • @AdrianW: Yeah, paracetomol is probably one of the least obnoxious drugs that we have when taken correctly.

      • as long as no more than 4 doses a day , big warnings on the box from the chemist.

    • a combo of both seems to be the best for pain like bad tooth aches, back pain I have read, and I find it true too.
I had really bad tooth pain (nerve pain), tried paracetamol, didnt help, next day tried ibprofen, didnt really work, one of each worked fine. called my dentist and thats what they said to use, one of each (even better is paracetemol/codeine and iboprofen)

      • +1

I've had two c-sections and both times the docs have advised to take both together,as it is more effective

    • +2

I was on prescription anti-inflammatories for a few years because of back problems, result = kidneys working at 40% capacity.
Not allowed to take them now.

      • +4

        Lazy kidneys!

      • Off to the glomerulonephritis clinic for you then. The word stuck in my brain when the wife had kidney failure from voltaten after a c-section years ago. No more nsaids any more for her too.

        • UGH!

It was Voltaren that I had as well.

      • +1

Same here. I had a deadly adverse reaction to a post-surgical anti-inflammatory used by my surgeon when I had a hand injury…off NSAIDs for life pretty much now.

I developed nephritis and at the worst of it, had 15% kidney function…

So no more Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Diclofenac (or any NSAID for that matter) for life now…only paracetamol and opioid painkillers.

      • Recently found one of my kidneys is stuffed (only doing 14% of the total kidney function). They have told me not to have ibuprofen any more as well so my working one doesn't get damaged.

        • So how do you know if your kidneys are stuffed? What are the symptoms?

        • @montorola:
I only know because i recently went to have a checkup re an op i had as a newborn. Part of that was to do an ultrasound, from there they did more tests.

You can run just fine on one which makes sense given lots of people donate one. I didn't have any symptoms as the other just compensates.

        • @montorola:

Diagnosis is secondary in many cases…I felt lower back pain, my GP suspected UTI and did a dipstick urine test, and sent me away with antibiotics for the day. The next day (sat) the GP was closed, but the pain got excruciating and I went to the ER…they did a blood and urine test, and the doctor's jaw nearly dropped to the floor when he saw my blood creatinine levels…

    • scrimshaw, just shows you with Chemart, the nearest one to us is charging $2.99 http://www.chemmart.com.au/shop/rachel-mulleys-chemmart-phar…

    • Agree totally, just make sure you have it with food. You don't want stomach ulcers.

    • Paracetamol is much more gentle on your stomach lining and your kidneys compared to Ibuprofen. Also anyone with heart disease or taking other medications like antidepressants needs to be really careful with ibuprofen whereas paracetamol can be safely taken alongside the majority of other medications. Always check with your doctor if not sure.

On special they are $0.69 and thats the regular price i think

    • +2

      Link?

    • +4

"On special" and "the regular price" are the same? Me thinks you are doing bargains incorrectly..

      • +1

i mean $0.99 is the normal price

        • -1

          Link?

        • -1

@Utopian: the link is given for $0.99, $0.69 is when its on special, i cant link you now

        • @hartik: ?? $0.99 is the special price. I'd simply asking to see a link/source to show your experience/view.
There's discussion here about $1.89-$1.99 being the normal price.

It is really concerning how people are categorising genuine therapeutic-grade paracetamol as "placebo" pills. The contempt is quite astonishing.

    • +11

Or simply a lack of understanding
