Are there any cheaper ones? I just lost my phone on a bus and in need of a new one but i'd like a trashier one just for $30-$100 if possible. It won't get much use other than playing Scrabble and listneing to music. Also, what network is TPG mobile on?

    • +3

Might or might not suit budget wise but you should be able to get a Xiaomi Mi4 for around 150$ which is a great 4G phone with excellent camera and display.

    • +3

Maybe better of going find that bus and save yourself $30~100?

    • +2

There aren't any Xiaomi phones in the $30-$100 range.

I'm having some trouble finding the exact frequencies that TPG are using.

      Some sources say:
      3G: 900/2100
      4G: B1, B3, B7, B40

While another source said it's only using the 4G: B7.

      • yeah i was going to ask, isnt there some risk with buying 4G phones from foreign countries? Different bands or something? I dont know much about it. What about if i bought a Lenovo phone or something form the site, would the 4G on it be appropriate for Aus? I really dont know anything about this stuff

        • +4

The websites I generally use are WillMyPhoneWork, Whirlpool's Mobile Frequencies and scrimshaw's Wiki Article.

WillMyPhoneWork is saying something different than the others. Hopefully a TPG user can clarify further.

        • +1

          @Clear: Thanks muchly !

The phone for this deal is a little rich for me but i found some el cheapos for ~$50 AUD which are right up my alleway :)

  • :( bought literally 12 hours ago for $179 (grey version)

  • +2

Brought 3 hrs ago for $150 from aliexpress. Gold colour.

    • Are you sure that's the same phone? They have similar names, but different specifications.

      • +1

Yes same model.Dreami store from aliexpress

        I meant usd 150.

        • +1

This one is $159.99 on that store. There is a 2GB/16GB Note (different phone) for $150 though.

        • +5

the model i brought is redmi 3 pro gold colour for $150 usd.

          3gb ram / 32gb rom

        • +1

          @lazydesi: I tried and it's $159.99. Perhaps it was a flash sale?

    • +2

      Link please?

    • +5

you didnt buy this phone for $150.

    • USD, right?

    • +5

      Where did you bring it?

    • aliexpress is very efficient in the "express" way, since you are able to bring 1 over from china to Australia in 3 hrs? That's how long it took me to drive from Melton to Hampton Park in any weekday morning..and yes, i am supporting the East-West Link project..just ignore me..

  • Is it the same phone that would normally cost A$275-$300 few weeks ago ?

    • +1

that was the redmi note 3 pro.

      • +2

        oh ok, thanks

  • Does this have Google Play pre-installed? Bought Note 2 earlier in the year and it was a nightmare trying to get Google Play installed and working. For novice like me it means hours/days googling for a solution. Xiaomi website doesn't help much either, otherwise nice phones.

    • +4

      Yep Google Play comes loaded.

  • Clear, what's diff betn this and note 3 pro?

  • Not knowing much about fones is this much of an upgrade from a Sony s1 compact

    • +3

      Yes correct.

  • This coupon only works with the Gold version?

    • It works on the silver version linked in the post.

      • Thanks Clear. This is a pretty great deal!

Got any recommendations for a case & screen-protector?

        • There are quite a few. I'm a fan of the transparent case as you can see the back of the phone rather than a single colour.

        • Sorry for the late response. If you haven't already ordered you can pick up the gold for the same price with HQCNVSFJ

  • Does this phone supports 4G bands in Australia?
I heard that lot of Xiaomi phones doesn't support 4g bands in Australia.

I'm very interested in buying this if it supports 4g bands. Please confirm.

    • +8

This phone supports 4G in Australia, but not all of the bands.

      Australia uses:

      • B1 – Telstra (a handful of sites), Optus (Darwin, Tasmania)
      • B3 – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone
      • B5 – Vodafone
      • B7 – Optus, Telstra. (TPG have a license but have not announced plans for it.)
      • B8 – Telstra (a handful of sites, utilises spectrum previously used by 2G)
      • B28 – Telstra, Optus (switched on early in a couple of cities, will be widespread in 2015)
      • B40 – Optus (Vivid wireless spectrum), NBN
      • B42 – Optus, NBN (trials at this stage)

      This phone supports:

      • B1 – Telstra (a handful of sites), Optus (Darwin, Tasmania)
      • B3 – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone
      • B5 – Vodafone
      • B7 – Optus, Telstra. (TPG have a license but have not announced plans for it.)
      • B40 – Optus (Vivid wireless spectrum), NBN
      • Are you sure B5 (850mhz) is supported by this phone?

        • +1

Yes. That's what Xiaomi's specs say and their other phones support it as well.

      • How important are B8, B28, and B42?

        • +1

          That's the tricky part.

B8 - Former 2G frequency used by Telstra. I'm not sure how widespread it is.

B28 is the widest/deepest and very rare to find on phones sold outside of Australia. It's important for Telstra, but you can still use Telstra without it. The InFocus M808 supports it for example.

B42 - Last I heard it's only been used by Optus in tests and is not live currently. It may be used by Optus or NBN Wireless in the future. B40 is an important band for Optus

        • @Clear: Will these missing bands depend on other Telstra and Optus bands too much that the battery will be drained to boost the signal reception?

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney: The phone will change to a frequency that is in range. If there are no 4G bands in range then it'll go to 3G followed by 2G and then no service.

So whats the difference between this one and the redmi note 3 pro??

  • +1

Will this be an upgrade to my sony xperia z1?

    • Don't want to get the new Sony Xperia?

  • I've often wondered, what is the software security on these type of phones? Do they have any nasty spyware installed on them? Thats the one good thing about cheap windows phone, they come with a very reputable OS.

    • -1

Yeah because Windows 10 never does anything dodgy, lol.

      • Nokia phones don't come with malware.

    • If you have any doubts, just download and flash the official firmware from the xiaomi website.

  • Great price, I got the non pro version a few months ago for a similar price, wish I could have waited for this one as 2 gig ram doesn't seem to be enough.

Remember the 3.2% cashback from Cashrewards too!

    • are you a heavy user?

is it just laggy? thinking about buying the note 3 pro 2gb variant but worried about it only being 2gb

      • I'm not that heavy a user, but just find it needs to reload apps like my internet browser quite often. I think it's an issue with the miui OS. I will flash CM or another rom when I have a chance, that should fix it.

Performance is pretty good considering the price, rarely lags badly.

  • +1

Waiting for better redmi note 3 deal.

Best deal was $273 from eGlobal - express delivery
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/243438

    • I thought this was much better than the note 3 apart from its camera?

      • +1

Note 3 is 1080p too. This is only 720p.

        • Bigger phone, more pixels… Does it really matter?

        • @taylorn8r:

Well it's 403 DPI on the Note vs 294 on the Pro. The Note's display will look sharper, but not a huge deal.

  • Hi rep, fantastic deal but would it be possible to get the same price on the gold version?

    • I'll ask and let you know when I hear back.

  • +1

hmm..the battery juice is very tempting…

  • Tempted cos of better battery life than my Moto X Style.

  • +1

Code doesn't seem to work anymore :(

    • It's working on the one in the post.

  • Sorry, this coupon code is applicable for some specific items

    • +2

I just tried on the one in my post and it worked.

      • +1

        Got it thanks :)

        • +1

The white option available only through cashrewards in the link above is not working?

        • @unicorns: Everything is there by going through CR. Try putting 367557 in the search box when you go through CR.

        • @Clear: She didn't get the right price, instead she was overcharged at $222

        • -1

@lovepeoplenotmoney: Order will have to be cancelled and reordered with the correct product.

        • @Clear: The price is not as advertised $213, order number 3674013

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney: To confirm, did you use the coupon?

The price is advertised as $153.99 US. Having the AU price in the title is a requirement by Ozbargain and was taken from the exchange rate at time of posting.

I recommend using a CC without currency conversion fees through Paypal as you won't get hit by their currency fees.

        • -1

@Clear: US$154 x 1.83AUD/USD = A$213 with the IOJGDMYY code. Paypayl or western union are the only options. Paypal has the option to use Paypal conversion, and also, the credit card conversion that is used to pay Paypal. However, using the credit card conversion connected to Paypal gave A$222. How about correcting the purchase price to advertised A$213 for purchase order 3674013 as the fastest means of solution?

Otherwise, please investigate the disparity in using the IOJGDMYY code, and provide step by step instructions to achieve the advertised A$213 price.

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney: Payments done at Geekbuying are USD and not AUD.

It would have gone through PayPal's or your CC's exchange rate.

Some cards like 28 Degrees have no currency conversion fee while others like CBA do.

        • -1

@Clear: The credit card used is 28 degrees, which uses xe.com conversion rate of 1.38AUD/USD. So the complain put here is still needed to be addressed. How about correcting the purchase price to advertised A$213 for purchase order 3674013 as the fastest means of solution?

Otherwise, please investigate the disparity in using the IOJGDMYY code, and provide step by step instructions to achieve the advertised A$213 price.

        • +1

@lovepeoplenotmoney: In PayPal you need to set the CC to use its own conversion rate otherwise it'll still use PayPal's.

        • -1

@Clear: It has always been set to use 28 degrees exchange rate, as has been mentioned for the third time already. What is asked is for you to help correct the discrepancy by adjusting to the correct price of A$213.

Otherwise provide step by step instructions.

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney: As I have said, the advertised price was $153.99 US and that's how much was paid. The $222 AU has come from your payment method and its exchange rate.

I am required by Ozbargain to put an approximate price (in AUD) in the title as evident by the ~. It's not an exact price as the payment method and fluctuating exchange rate will change the final amount.

        • -6

@Clear: The exchange rate is 1.38AUD/USD, which is A$213. However, you over-charged at $222. PayPal gives option of whether PayPal conversion or your own credit card. When own credit card is elected, A$222 was still charged. The request for you to fix the problem, and provide step by step instructions, has been made many times. Clearly settings on your accountability prevent and syphon the exchange rate. Your willful persistence to refuse demonstrates disregard for ethical practice, and customers.

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney: Alright then. To be certain I'll get customer service to look at the transaction to see if there was anything wrong.

        • +2

          @lovepeoplenotmoney:

You just need to change your PayPal payment settings so it charges you in USD. It will then look like this:

Pay with MasterCard x-xxxx $153.99 USD

To save you doing a google search:

Instructions on how to change your PayPal billing currency:
Login to PayPal, click settings, click payments, click pre-approved payments, click select available funding sources, next to the credit card you want to pay with click 'conversion options', then click 'Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice.'

This will then charge your credit card in USD, at which stage your credit card will use the MasterCard exchange rates, instead of using PayPal's lesser exchange rates if you let them convert it for you.

The credit card used is 28 degrees, which uses xe.com conversion rate of 1.38AUD/USD.

They aren't using xe.com, MasterCard uses its own exchange rates. However they aren't much more than xe.com generally. Current rate

$153.99 USD x 1.3847 = $213.23 AU. Therefore Clear's title is correct. If you pay in USD then your MasterCard will charge you ~$213.23 or thereabouts (might change slightly).

If you choose to pay in AUD then PayPal will charge you around $222 AU. It is your responsibility to change your settings in your PayPal account for that particular card to charge in USD and not AUD - if it isn't already set like that. That is not the merchants responsibility.

Unfortunately PayPal make this quite difficult to find (perhaps on purpose so users are using a lesser exchange rate?).

Clear's title is very much correct, they are displaying both currencies accurately as we ask posters to do & the price is right.

          Hope that helps.

        • @Clear: VERY disappointed with the service at GeekBuying. I put the order in on the 30th May, I cancelled the order as per your instructions on the 31st May and GeekBuying actually REPLIED to my REQUEST TO CANCEL on the 1st of June at about 5pm by PROCESSING the transaction!!?!

It seems GeekBuying interprets "please cancel and refund my order" to mean "please process and ship asap".

Seriously everyone, please DO NOT buy from GeekBuying. Customer Service is rude, unhelpful, misleading, untrustworthy and they have completely disregarded and have no respect for customer requests.

        • @unicorns: What's your order number? I'll see if I can get the refund processed.

        • -1

@Clear: You were told the other day in the above comments twice but you demonstrated persistence to disrespect and dishonour ethical practice.

        • @Clear: The cancellation request was made, and you willfully disregarded the cancellation request; proven by responding to the very same cancellation request email!! Such unethical practice persists to disrespect and lower the standard of professionalism, willfully strives to dishonour merchant obligations, and processed the transaction to avoid cancellation. Very dodgy merchant, beware!!

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney:

Let me clarify my position with Geekbuying for you. I am marked as 3rd Party Marketing and not a direct employee of Geekbuying. Any issues I receive are passed onto customer service and handled by them.

I do not have access to any of their systems or emails. Just direct contact with their employees.

Since hamza has proven that there was no overcharge, I'm happy to ensure that Geekbuying refund unicorn's purchase if I'm provided with an order number.

        • @Clear: The order number 3674013 was given to you twice before and repeatedly iterated, meaning this is the third time. Yet you ignored the information provided to you, so feigned ignorance is demonstrated and undermined your stance. Hamza did not disprove there was no overcharge, he corroborated that the price is indeed $213, with the arithmetic I provided. As a 3rd party marketing, you brought this post to OzB, and get commission from every consumer you try to hook. You have a responsibility because you syphon profit from consumers to ensure consumers are told the exact steps to obtain the deal you intend to bait consumers. You even suggested order cancellation, and ignored every time the order number was repeated to you, and did nothing to help, only offer fake impressions.

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney: I was referring to unicorn's order number. So I'm going to assume that you're speaking for unicorn and have his/her order number?

If that is the case then I put in a cancellation request yesterday.

        • @Clear: Did you not read the previous reply? The cancellation request was made by her as well before you, however the cancellation request was willfully disregarded when there was ample opportunity. Such unethical practice was proven by Geekbuying responding to the very same cancellation request email!

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney: I still need her order number to pass the information on. So is order 3674013 hers or not?

        • -1

@Clear: You just willfully disregarded the information put for you again. Because you brought this offer to bait consumers and syphon commission from our purchases for your personal benefit, the onus is on you to ethically facilitate all the steps. To post an offer and expect consumers to buy, avoid accountability, just so you can gain personal benefit is opportunistic. Remember her order number 3674013 because it's bolded to highlight to you again

        • @lovepeoplenotmoney: Thank you. All I needed was "Yes her order number is x". It was not clear if that was hers or yours as it was never specified.

I will remind customer service again that this refund needs to be processed as soon as possible.

On a final note, I'm doing this because I care. Customer service is not a part of my agreement with GB and the number of sales does not impact my commission.

        • +1

@Clear: What is Debbie doing?? I sent an email on the 31st May to cancel my order #3674013, Debbie replies on 1st June telling me the order is packed. I sent a reply email on 1st June repeating my request to cancel said order. Debbie replies on 2nd June in the same email thread saying, here is the tracking number!!!???!?! This feels like some sort of sick joke. I had to reply to Debbie and define to her what cancelling meant. What is wrong with Debbie and GeekBuying? I wish i never trusted this site and wish i never bought a phone based on your recommendation.
Instead oz Bargainers, you can avoid the hassle and frustration and just head onto eBay for the purchase.

        • @Clear: Have to wait until the phone is delivered (which will take a month) just to decline so the phone can be shipped back (which could take another month) just so I can get my money back. This is all on the assumption there will be no delays or issues with the post. In the meantime, Geek Buying has taken my money after many requests to cancel and they think that's ok because they have shipped out the phone already.

The only port of communication in which to cancel any order with Geek Buying is through the dishonest Debbie, who has been replaced. Deceitful Dora has now taken charge and asked me if I really want it returned since it has already been shipped out. I really don't know how much clearer I can be when I emailed Geek Buying and literally spelled it out on three separate occasions in the same message, please cancel my order! How can I be more clearer?!????

Why would Geek Buying think it is ok for me, or any customer, to take my money, disregard my repeated requests and force a customer to accept the phone since they have already shipped it out?

It is NEVER ok to steal from customers.

It is NEVER ok to be deceitful and persistently disregard a customer's request!.

It is NEVER ok to be sneaky and think that you can take advantage of a customer's money by sending out the phone against their wishes!

Geek Buying's unethical practices and underhanded ways have caused great grief for me and to see others being treated the same way and dragged through the mud has cemented the fact that Geek Buying is a disreputable company bent on stealing innocent customers money.

One thing is clear, GeekBuying and Clear do not care about their customers.

        • @unicorns: I have continuously raised the issue with Geekbuying. I'm sorry, but it's all I can do.

        • -1

@Clear: How have you raised it? Has the impact of detailed recount of the risk of a bad experience been explained? The risk of putting a six shooter to their head, and loading one bullet for each bad review; is a good analogy. Are GeekBuying (GB) going to become GearBest (GB)? Do GB want to be distrusted by more and more people? How about you raise the problem with GB with better effectiveness? You suggested to cancel the order, so she did, now look how GB have responded?

For all customers, having problems with GeekBuying, this is a recent horror story you can learn from with the same phone. There is concern if all these sellers are using the same warehouse, or are related with the same employees, and owners
