iPhone 6 Plus 64GB - $798 @ BIG W (In Store Only)

While I was looking for the clearance iPad Mini's which were cleared for $149 earlier in the week I found the iPhone 6 Plus 64GB selling for $798 on clearance. Stock is limited, in store only. I didn't buy one and I didn't take a picture as I didn't think last years tech (or older) was a great price at nearly $800 but I saw the Officeworks $1100 deal for the same phone and thought I better post.

This was in WA but I am fairly sure it's Nationwide as the lady said they were clearing all the older models with configurations larger than 16GB.

I guess it's a bargain compared to Apples $1229 and Officeworks $1100 but I would probably spend your money elsewhere. This is more of a "hey, I heard you may be liking that officeworks $1100 deal and thinking seriously about paying that, why don't you give your local Big W a call and see if you can save yourself some cash" kind of post.

PS: Like only a handful of people got the iPads at $149 and they weren't at all stores. I imagine this is the same so your chances are slim to none. Move to forum is you feel it's appropriate.

Thanks to Mickey and curtleyw for checking around other models and prices are listed below:

Never thought I'd see an Apple product sold at a fair price haha, great find!

    • +1

Thanks mate. I didn't actually think it was fair as I didn't think twice when walking away but then did some research (aka looking at OzBargain).

    • +8

The 1gb RAM makes it a deal breaker for me. The performance of this phone is terrible. Made me hold off for a year until the 6s came out.

No doubt ios10 won't do it any favors either.

      • +4

Hi BK, I must say my experience is different. I've owned several iPhones (and other smart and "feature" phones) and the 6 Plus runs the fastest of the lot. Haven't tried the 6s though. What apps do you use?

        • +4

Anything that uses ram. Open a web page, open a new tab, go back to the old tab, it reloads due to low memory conditions.

      • +4

iOS is optimised differently to Android - Android requires much more RAM in order to run smoothly. Most if not all flagship phones should run smoothly now

      • +5

The 1gb RAM makes it a deal breaker for me. The performance of this phone is terrible.

As the owner of one, I disagree. I have it updated to the latest version and it still runs crisp. No issues whatsoever. Have you even used iOS before or were you just an Android user that is merely parroting what other Android users are saying in forums? The fact that you mentioned you waited until the next model suggests as much

        • +7

I use both. I also go for the high end iOS devices, not the entry level as I am a power user and don't like to waste time deleting apps and photos. I own an air 2 and 6s+ as well as various android devices.

1GB ram might have been ok in 2012 but in 2016 2GBram and 32GB storage as a minimum for me.

        • +2

          @BargainKen:

1gb of ram is okay on the smaller screen iPhones because they run at a significantly lower resolution. I had an iPad Air and it certainly would reload webpages all the time, and switching between apps would often require reloading. Which can be really annoying if you are filling out on line forms. This is unacceptable in a 2014 flagship level device, let alone in 2016. I agree with you and I would avoid 1gb of ram on an iOS device with 1080p display or higher.

This is a great price for local 6+ though.

        • +4

To say that iOS doesn't benefit from additional memory is fanboy nonsense. I have a 2GB iPad Air 2, and it tombstones apps far less frequently than the one it replaced. Even comparing Web browsing, tabs don't have refresh as aggressively with more memory but all other things being equal.

        • +2

          @Strand0410:

To say that iOS doesn't benefit from additional memory is fanboy nonsense.

          Except I didn't say that.

        • @Ronnnie:

Correct the GPU does not have discrete memory and utilises system memory which is fine for mobile applications, but not so good when you don't have much to begin with. Larger resolutions will consume a larger display buffer. Only phone which might do OK is the 5se but even that was upgraded to 2gb (same SoC as the 6s).

        • @BargainKen:

1gb of ram works fine for me
          i think you're nit picking

        • +2

          @shawncro 222:

Hmm no. I'm not, it really is the Achilles heel of the device.

        • -3

          @Ronnnie: that's not how ram works…

        • +1

          @BargainKen:
I couldn't agree more, 1gb ram absolutely kills these devices, no matter how fast the CPU is.

Anyone who disagrees simply isn't using the phone in ways that require it. For power users who jump around apps, use many browser tabs, fill out forms, etc, it's horrible.

Not ripping on iOS completely, but the ram issue is an issue…

        • +1

          @Lukian:
Sorry, replied to wrong comment. :/

      • I disagree too. Forget the numbers. This phone screams.

Edit: I was referring to the iPhone 6. Didn't see the Plus. No idea about the Plus.

    • +7

If this is considered fair, we're all doomed.

      • +1

Well relatibely fair… considering how much the competition charges

  • +8

This is more of a "hey, I heard you may be liking that officeworks $1100 deal and thinking seriously about paying that, why don't you give your local Big W a call and see if you can save yourself some cash" kind of post.

For that money I found it strange why people wouldn't pay a bit more and get the 6S Plus instead.

    • +1

      Exactly.

  • +16

Agreed OP, I personally wouldn't spend $800 on a nearly 2 year old tech phone, but this is a great price compared everywhere else.

    • +8

I posted the same thing a while ago and the Apple fan club came out in full force.

I've had iPhones since the first model ever got released. iOS does some things better than Android but $800 for a 2 year old phone is really a rip off.
My iPhone 6 plus was such a junk phone that had many issues seems I wasn't alone in that regard. You're better off paying more and getting the 6s or buying a Nexus 6p.

      • +1

I agree, even though it is cheaper than the market price, doesn't make it a bargain. For $800, you may as well spend the a little bit extra for current tech, or wait for the 7.

        • +1

But will the 7 be $800? Or $1800?

  • +3

PS: Like only a handful of people got the iPads at $149 and they weren't at all stores. I imagine this is the same so your chances are slim to none.

That's how I see almost all the Big W deals posted here: a marketing trick to get more customers in the doors. If I can't buy it online I hardly bother with in-store deals, except JB Hi-Fi & Target deals etc.

    • +1

I thought that, but it's actually a very low amount of stores who have stock. I spent like 3 hours calling BIG W stores (as the Head Office has a terrible policy of not checking their database and asking for your postcode to put you "through" to your local store) until I got an operator who checked and basically said, "All gone, this started Tuesday and sold out Tuesday" in regards to the iPad deals.

I think they don't care and just want to move it. If they had HEAPS of stock in many stores then yeah, a smart trick. In this case though, it's a handful of stores, most I called never stocked anything bigger than 16GB to begin with, and they simply wanted it gone.

Maybe future sales they will use this but it's just a mess. I give points to those who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

      • +1

Which WA store if you don't mind me asking?

        • +3

          I don't mind at all :)

I have had a few PM's actually and was going to respond but I will answer here. It was Mandurah WA. You have to get the right customer service rep and then get them to check "The Cage out the back". I was checking for iPads as they had the 32GB listed on their display but obviously it was sold out. They have like a spinning display at the Home Entertainment desk at the back of the store to the left of the games. It has a special ticket for the iPhone 6 Plus with the price on it.

(I say "get the right customer service rep" because I have called so many stores where they would just give you a blanket answer of "no" and then I rock up at the store and look for myself and indeed they have stock. Nothing against the hard workers but a lot simply don't give a sh*t and just say no and don't even check. I had a great employee who actually called another person in the store to check the cage out the back giving me a run down of what they had in stock. Kudos Mandurah!)

        • +5

@4892: thanks. Yeah sometimes the staff at big w is too lazy to check any at the back and straight "no, none left".

    • +2

That's what happens with clearance stock, exact same thing happens at each store you mention all the time on ozbargain. If its on clrarance its normally store specific, first in best dressed and sheer luck if you can find stock on some of deals that pop up around here.
I've never heard of a retailer ordering in stock to meet demand on clearance items, it wouldn't be clearance otherwise.

  • Great price!

  • I just called several different Big W stores in Melbourne but most of them didn't have any stock left. Eventually I found one store that had the iPhone 6 Plus 16GB left in stock but it was selling for $799. The sales consultant was adamant that his store never had the 64GB version in stock either. I tried to explain to him that the Big W stores in WA are selling the 64GB for only $798 so shouldn't the 16GB version be cheaper but unfortunately he wouldn't budge on the price… =(

Does anyone else think that it's strange that the Melbourne Big W stores are selling the iPhone 6 Plus 16GB for $799 but the WA Big W stores are selling the 64GB version for only $798?

    • +1

Yep, this is the same as the iPad models larger than 16GB or ones with cellular. A lot of stores never stocked these in the first place but the few that did people snapped up the iPads within a few hours.

It should be nationwide but you need to have 1) A store that stocked larger than 16GB iPhones (these stores are few and far between) and 2) Still have any stock left as they tend to put the tickets out to get rid of the stock asap.

edit: The iPhone 6 Plus 16Gb is $1079 so to have a store with one for $799 isn't too bad.

    • +2

Not strange at all, big w isn't a specialty electronics store, nor are they are a store that haggles like jb hifi etc. Chances are select stores in premium locations may have recieved higher capacity models, most would only sell base models. My local big w doesn't even sell iphones above the 5c model or ipads above the 16gb models so doesn't surprise me there is extremely limited stock considering big w's target demographic isn't people after high end electronics.

      • You pretty much nailed it. Thanks for the post.

  • +1

I went to 2 stores (Liverpool and Fairfield), none in stock

    • Merrylands?

      • Did not go. But I would say don't bother.

  • +7

Stafford (Brisbane, QLD) has some stock. Picked up a 6 64gb for $799 for my partner as she doesn't care for a big screen. Nice dude said there was heaps of the 6 in 64gb in silver.
    A 16gb 6 is on sale for $699 too.

  • No stock for 6 or 6 plus at Macquarie shopping centre.

    • I have never seen anything on OzB at Macquarie Centre.

The staff are usually helpfully obnoxious at correcting me.

"Umm sorry sir, the item is out of stock… but even if it wasn't that [OzBargain] price is wrong the real price is…"

      • +7

If you see any deals posted on OzB, never go to Macquarie Centre. Too much competition with lots of tight ass uni students who have a lot of free time, they'll grab all the bargains before you do.

        • +1

Still, that said the staff could just be like "sorry no stock"

They don't need to be rude about it.

    • 10Q, you just saved me an hour with same petrol cost.

  • Don't forget 5% gift card discount for Entertainment Book members.
Got mine 2 years ago for $737.50 after 5% discount + 10% TRS.

  • Any of these avaialbe in melbourne??

    • +1

I couldn't find any Big W stores in Melbourne that had the iPhone 6 Plus 64GB in stock but there were some iPhone 6 Plus 16GB left in stock for $799

      • I went to a melb store and forgot about this deal but they didnt have any sort of special

however this store had 64gb models in stock at full price, when the CBD store said no vic stores have 64gb

  • Ok I just spoke to a Big W store manager and found out that most of the Melbourne stores don't have anymore iPhone 6 Plus left in stock

    • so did they say which stores do then?

  • Got the 2 year old Samsung Galaxy S5 for $397 last year on Boxing Day.

  • -5

Why do people buy phones?? Apart from lost / damadged (not under warranty) replacements.
It is cheaper to recontract every 12 months and resell your 12 month old iPhone on eBay. I recontract and sell my old iPhone for around $600.
This pays any recontracting fee and my first 2 bills every year.

    • +8

How much is the plan you are on and what iPhone model? You only gave us half the story. How can we compare?

    • +1

Might work only if you like to change your phones every year. A good iPhone is perfectly usable after 2-3 years later, so buying outright becomes cheaper than going with phone plan.

At the moment when there is a huge battle of GBs between telcos it is cheaper to choose SIM only plan for 12 months and buy outright. The plans with phones are ridiculously expensive.

I did get my 6P with Optus $48pm and 500MB, but I steal my daughter's GB as she is on 10GB $40pm plan. It worked cheaper for me as I just need about 2.5GB data each month.

      • Disagree, battery life gets significantly reduced within 12 months, let's not forget how greatly improved the new models are
Stay up to date recontract the day the new one comes out. Saves you paying $1300 for a new phone.

        • Well that is kind of true but the battery performance will not drop that much within 1 year. Maybe 10-15% max?

When I bought my 128GB iPhone 6s plus, the contracts were $100+ per month. I ended up paying $1260 for mine with eBay coupon and TRS.

I am going to keep the phone for 3-4 years, maybe change the battery at Apple if it needs that. So I think I still gotine cheaper this way.

        • -1

          @datafellows:
Antiques roadshow called, they want their out of warranty 4 year old phone back thanks

  • Hate to admit but this is a decent price for a 64Gb 6+.

    • Wonder if anyone gets OfficeWorks to price beat ;)

This is an excellent price :)

  • +2

Doesn't surprise me they're clearing this out. The 6 now has the slowest processor in the range as the SE gets the significantly faster 6S CPU.

  • I would excercise caution when buying iPhone 6 & 6 plus because if you break something and want to do independant repair, the phone would be bricked and useless unless apple has fixed that in iOS 9.

    • +1

Are you referring to 'Code 53' error with regards to replacing the fingerprint scanner with a 3rd party one? They've fixed that and in all honesty, I can see why it existed in the first place to stop people being able to replace the fingerprint scanner and being able to get into any phone.

      • Thanks for that mate.

  • +1

None at Whitfords, Perth WA. Actually called up most of the north stores, nobody has it. But like the OP said, might be worth popping into the store and trying.

    • +18

Ok. Give me your credit card number, expiry and cvc so they can put it aside for you to collect

      • -3

Put some respek on my name

  • I've called so many stores in Perth and nothing. Shame I really wanted 64 for my daughter, I could only find the 16.

I was lucky to get it as there was a guy who just got in before me soon after the doors opened. Luckily for me there was one more. Well done 4892 for spotting this bargain.
