  • How does a Lenovo compare to other brands like Acer and HP…? I am looking to buy a new laptop and waiting for EOFY sales .. I want a really good one that can last a few years atleast

    • +9

Thinkpad is the way to go imo. I wouldn't buy anything else if I was getting a windows laptop.

      • +3

Acer and HP do put in better graphics cards from nvidia though. So if youre using the laptop for pure gaming and net, the graphics probably gonna be more useful

        • +1

I am talking about build quality. My thinkpads been so durable. Its not something that needs to be replaced for any durability issues.

      • I know sarah965 only asked about Acer and HP, but have people checked out Gigabyte, MSI and Metabox laptops?

They're pretty good specs for the price.

Check them out at MSY or Kong Computers.

        • +1

I am looking for i7 with SSD for around $800 to be comparable to this offer (includes 8% cash back via CashRewards)
          Any suggestions?

        • @yoyomablue:

Ok, no. I actually read the post as i5.

          Apologies!

      • +7

These aren't thinkpads. They're ghetto consumer-quality laptop riding on the Thinkpad name. If it isn't a T,W, or X series, its not a "thinkpad"

        • Why's that?

        • It's probably not a thoroughbred like the T series, or the X… I agree

        • +1

@yoyomablue: The 'proper' Thinkpads are business grade laptops, which usually have a much higher overall standard of build quality than the base model consumer grade units.

        • +1

          @yoyomablue:

Inferior build quality, component quality, worse keyboard. It has non of the things that made the Thinkpad name what it is.

    • +1

I've been using a E520 for the past few years (4 or 5), it's a great machine (i5,8GB ram,500 GB hard drive Win 7). Starting to get develop some issues, so I might jump on this offer.

      • Why don't you just reformat and reinstall windows lol

      • +8

It's probably your hard drive, just grab one of the cheap SSDs here on OZB and clean Windows 10, you'll be laughing at how good it runs.

        • Perfect solution for old WIN7 machines

        • I am running E420 with 4GB RAM and i5, but put in SSD and noticed big improvement in loading programs. I use joysticks on laptops keyboards a lot and sometimes feel I would appreciate a backlit keyboard, too.

  • +15

Ha. Just about to post this one. If you change from Win7 Pro to Win10 Home you save another $100.

    • Are you sure? I downgraded and came up as $899 as per the description?

      • +5

Might be a bug in their cart? I added to the cart with Win7Pro first, apply coupon to get to $899, and then click on "Edit" to change from Win7Pro to Win10Home and that takes away another $100…

        • +5

Thanks. Tested again and you're right! Post updated.

        • +2

I got $799 after selecting win 10 home

    • +5

You are not forced to accept Windows, if you already have a copy due to corporate licencing or are installing Linux and if you have the time to spend half an hour on hold to Microsoft Australia, you can reject the licence agreement and they will send you a cheque for $29 to $60 (depending on the Windows version).

      • +1

How do we do this? I have a win 10 education licence ywt to be activated in place.

        • +1

Contact Microsoft Australia on 13 20 58. Be prepared to listen to lots of "on hold" music.

      • That seems great!

  • +1

Can I ask what is the different form win 10 home and pro? and has anyone upgraded to win 10 to share?

    • +11

Things that Pro can do that Home cannot..

      Join a domain
      BitLocker
      Group policy management
      Remote Desktop
      Client Hyper-V
      Assigned Access
      Enterprise Mode Internet Explorer
      Windows Store for Business
      Trusted Boot
      Windows Update for Business

      • +8

Thanks, I think Home will be sufficient for me.

        • +3

Microsoft offers the option to upgrade from Home to Pro for $100, so you can always do this later if needed.

      • Wow Remote Desktop not being included is a bugger , never knew that's the case , have always taken it granted in all the work machines I was given ( didn't use a home version for 10 years ) :S

        • +1

Yep, RDP service was only ever included in the non-Home versions of Windows. It is also the one thing that I rely on the most from the Pro version. Sure there are other remote access alternatives, but their performance doesn't seem to match RDP and you always feel like you're using something 'external' to the OS. And most of them require an Internet connection, even if just wanting to use it locally (e.g. Team Viewer). However, I believe there are hacks out there that enable RDP access on Home editions. Not only this, they also allow multiple RDP sessions for multiple users - something only officially available with Server editions of Windows.
Note, the home edition still includes the Remote Desktop CLIENT, but not the server .

        • @noz: Ta mate. I understand their thinking, a home user doesn't need rdp , but knowing it, surprised me a lot :)

        • +1

This refers to hosting remote desktop. The home version still comes with remote desktop client.

@noz if you go into the TeamViewer settings you can tell it to accept lan connections and then you can type their IP instead of an access ID. Works well with the custom password setting.

You can even set it to accept lan connections exclusively and not connect to the TeamViewer network.

    • Also you do not get a lot of tools for web development services, like www/ftp services, IIS services or consoles etc.

  • Awesome deal, would be all over this if I didn't just picked up a Latitude 14.

  • +2

TA, excellent deal. Please specify 8% cashback also in the description.
Which is better 0. MP webcam or 720p HD camera?

    • Please specify 8% cashback also in the description.

Sorry, I can't as I've reached my rep post limit :(

      • ?

        • +1

Including a link to CR in any deal I post counts as a rep post. Because I posted the discounted eGift cards yesterday as a rep, I need to wait 24 hours for the next one. Hope that makes sense :)

        • +3

@tightarse: Well. Not exactly true. Posting a Lenovo deal with links to Cashrewards in the content counts as a Referral deal which is counted separately from Store Rep deals (where the main link goes to the store you are representing). The last Referral deal you posted was from 8 days ago.

        • +1

@scotty: Correct, but whether it's a rep or a referrer post makes no difference in this case as they're both CR. I'm still limited to one per 24 hours, or am I wrong? Too confusing lol

        • +5

          @tightarse:
          He is da boss TA.

I think he knows what he is talking about.

  • +1

Anyone know how this would perform as a gaming machine?

    • +1

It would run >4 year old games at low resolutions and min-med settings. Don't buy it for gaming, buy a desktop.

    • +5

Radeon R7 M360 — low end dedicated. Actually not much better than integrated graphics :(

    • +1

      It'll run LoL/WoW/Dota/CSGO/etc..

      • It'd struggle with dota 2 on high settings

        • not sure about the mobile edition but put an r7 360 into my sons desktop on the weekend and most of his games like ark survival Starcraft etc now run fine in 1080p

        • Dota is 99% gameplay, 1% graphic. If you can get a playable framerate at any quality, then its good enough for Dota.

        • @tatsulotto: yea but spell detail is important. Try dota on low settings and you'll see

  • +3

Careful about buying this. I've had mine for 3 months now and its given me nothing but headaches

    1. It has trouble starting up, not just slow, but needs some playing around with the power button before actually turning on
    2. The touchpad and the keyboard have both stopped working and despite a bios check, system restore and endless hours browsing the internet for other solutions, I am now awaiting a warranty call.

    Buy at own risk

    • +7

sounds like you have a hardware dud! definitely a warranty claim

    • +1

claim your warranty, I bought a T460 few days earlier and the replacement settled quite easily. But still a good 3 weeks wait.

      • 3 weeks? Ew, They did say 1-2 weeks but I guess you need to account for shipping

        • This is Australia, mate! That's as fast as they can be..

  • How's the screen display?

  • Since I need to use virtual machines, I wish it supported 32GB (seems to be 16GB max).. otherwise, it has pretty good specs.

  • im not trying to be an ass but these laptops are so ugly - why are you guys rating it so much - is it because of lenovo reliability?

    • +4

i7 6500U+dGPU, 1080p. For the money the hardware is very good.

      • +1

        Not real i7 you thought

I have no question that this is still a good deal. But if you think you are getting real i7 performance out of this, planning to run multiple VMs or do heavy stuff, video editing etc like some of the comments mentioned, then you need to be careful and don't be fooled by intel. Please check the benchmark, this cpu has similar performance as a desktop i3.

        • Its an U-series. They're not really useful for real computing works, and are inferior to a dual core M series from 3 generations back (i5-2520M in the T420/X420)

        • I know what you mean. The actual performance is lower than sky lake i3. But, as you are using a laptop form factor, what do you expect for $799? Any alternative with better performance but still in the laptop form factor?

Also, I think I have clearly stated it is i7 6500U. What makes you think this i7 is not the real i7 I thought?

        • @claud0902: I think the entire i-series is purely a three-level indicator, so in this sense i7 means that it is best among the low voltage line, support more premium features. The people need performance would still buy the normal voltage cpus of course.

        • hope you enjoy carrying your desktop around for the performance of real i3

        • +3

@claud0902: ops, sorry, I didn't mean to be personal. The "you" actually means general person like me, because it is very easy to think that this is i7, so I can do heavy stuff. Also I saw some comments mentioned upgrading ram size to run VMs etc. So I guess it is not just me thinking it is a powerful cpu. There seems to be a big gap between general perception and the reality, specially when the real performance is about i3 desktop. That is why I was just trying to give a friendly reminder. Not to finger point at you, sorry :)

        • -1

this i7 has almost identical performance to a 13" macbook pro i5. hope that helps in comparisons

        • you can't compare a desktop i7 to a mobile i7…… if you have the space desktop is always better per $ and if you don't have the space your choice is limited to a laptop.

look at the fan size, power and clock of the desktop i7 you can't fit that into a lap top case. it's a compromise

        • -2

          @garage sale:

Full powered Sandy/Ivy mobile i5 from ~4 years ago has similar performance level to this ULV while having the same 6-7 hours working battery life. Its the "wah I'm a manlet I need my mobile workstation to be 200g lighter" and/or "look at those trendy ultrabook, I want to look trendy too, I'm not actually doing any real work on my work-purchased laptop anyway, let me be hip" trend that led to the removal of important business laptop features like removable and extended ultrabay battery.

          Gain:
          * Very minor battery improvement. ULV CPU, but downgraded to 4 cell standard option instead of 6 cell.
          * -200 to 400g. While weight is important for ultraportable laptop like the X-series or Ultrabook/MBA/etc…, 14inchers, not so much.

          Loss:
          * CPU power
          * Keyboard. x20 -> x30 was a major downgrade. x30 -> x40 and beyond was a complete free fall in quality.
          * Removable battery. Carry one with you, and its a +8 hours of worktime unattached.
          * Ultrabay. Hot swappable extra storage + battery. Ultrabay 3 cells add another 3-4 hours of working time.

    • A lot of people love the classic Thinkpad design. I can see why you might hate it, but for me it's much better looking than the aluminium look of modern laptops.

    • +16

Because not everyone rates appearance as highly as hardware. That's what Macbooks are for.

    • lenovos are built super durable and really good keyboards and trackpad

    • +2

Who cares about looks? Pointless feature that everyone will disagree over.

    • +8

I am ashamed of my superficiality

    • Ugly? I am really picky about design and I actually like the look of thinkpads.

Thinkpads are built really well and has good usability. They are to be used.

This deal has good rating probably on the count that it is a good notebook with good spec that you can use. It's a great deal. Better than the notebook that you can get at PW/JB/HN at the price.

Well done and thanks TA and Lenovo.

Also have ordered few notebooks from the recently. Have to say their customer service has improved a lot in recent years.

Would not hesitate ordering and dealing with Lenovo.

  • Hello
Does it have slot to add SSD?

    • +1

Not capable of HDD + SSD, one or the other.

      • You can if you swap out the disk drive for a SSD

        • There is no disk drive on the 460. You must be thinking of the 560, which is 15.6".

  • +4

It would be nice if you could get an i5 with a bit better GPU for this price. It seems as if strategists have eliminated that segment of the market in favour of flogging i7s on everything.

    • Its because the "real CPU" with better GPU are used in the "dedicated workstation" market (Lenovo W series, Dell Precision). The 14inch performer market died with Haswell, its all U series ULV now

  • is it an msata or m.2 slot does ayone know ?

    • +2

Given it has a 1TB HDD I would assume neither, probably a 2.5" SATA drive.

    • +1

2.5" SATA HDD. (I have one and replaced the HDD myself)

  • This is a lot of hardware for the price, and Lenovo Thinkpads are usually reliable machines. Very good deal!

    • I've found them to have great software support even for really old machines .

      • and it's full hd screen

  • +2

    Is there an education discount?

    Edit: Nope, just tried.

    • hmm i guess this answers my question…cheers.

  • +1

Just keep in mind that the CPU is only dual core (4 threads). Having said that, my current laptop is an i7-5500U, and I have no performance issues at all.

    • seriously, does it run excel smoothly? What is the biggest spreadsheet you've opened in this machine?

      • It will have no problem at all. I'm happy to try a large spreadsheet on my i7-5500U if you can point me to any.

  • How does the E series compare to the T series . My ancient T-500 has been dropped quite a few times and is really starting to look ragged . I wouldn't think twice if they still had the same keyboards which I love . Are the screens on these any good ?

    • +1

T series has ThinkPad's magnesium rollcage, and E series is just hardened plastic. E460 also has only one HDMI out, whereas T series usually have Display Ports which would be useful to drive large/high res monitors or multiple monitors (T460 has both mini DP & HDMI).

ThinkPad's FHD are all IPS screens. They are okay, but not Macbook-good.

    • Not even close. These are a lot closer to the Acer/Asus/HP Celeron/Pentium consumer garbage you get at JB/Harvey.

    • Got both. Ts are more solid, spill resistant keyboard etc. But Es are okay for day to day use at home, better built than competitor, such as Acer, HP.

Gone through a few lenovos on work and personal basis. All worked out well.

  • Is it worth $17 to upgrade to Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260, 2x2, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo adapter?

Are you guys going for the 8GB RAM or 16GB? I usually max out what I can so 16GB I guess.

Does this come with bag, mouse and power or do you have to add them under accessories? And what's a sleeve?

Sorry for all the questions - I usually stick to desktops at home but the queue to that for homework is becoming unbearable…

    • +3

      Yes it is.

      8GB. DIY upgrade later.

Not included. A sleeve is just a fabric cover (usually neoprene).
