Comes with power cord. So just imagine this as a laptop with powercord.

        $17 upgrade is not bad.

  • What's the normal time frame for Lenovo to be shipped? I am travelling overseas on 8 Jun, not sure if I can receive it by this date to claim GST.

    • +1

Personally, I'd only do it after several phone calls, to 'real' people. Names, times, details all logged. Doesn't guarantee, but it shows you're on the ball, and will give you an idea (confidence) by what they say.
      And do it TODAY.

    • +1

No way you'll be able to get it that quickly. Get's shipped from China, takes a week or so to assemble from memory before being dispatched. After dispatch it's 2-3 days

    • i think it should be able to arrive by the time you come back

    • Won't make it, dont bother. Will only have a chance if they have one sitting in AUST. only in rare circumstances. Ie. They have sent me two laptops last time and I have returned one to their AU depot.

  • Good hardware for the price. I'm after something more ultrabook-y but this is pretty tempting…

  • hey guys, can I change the HDD to SSD later? If so, what size of SSD should i get? Should I upgrade the RAM via lenovo or is it cheaper for me to get it myself?

    • +2

RAM should be sufficient, depends on how many slots there are.
HDD to SSD is easy, it has a 5400RPM drive, meaning it's a standard laptop 2.5" harddrive.
      Easy to get a 2.5" SSD :)

      • thanks. so it can go with either 7mm or 9.5mm SSD thickness?
any recommendation where to get the RAM? need it for CAD purpose so want to max out the RAM. I believe this laptop has 2 slots, so I can put another 8GB RAM on the other slot.

        • Amazon for RAM, by the time this laptop gets to your place, your RAM would have arrived earlier :)
Amazon for SSD too. If the 1TB 5400RPM drive in this deal (E460) is the same as the Yoga460 (also had 1TB 5400RPM), it's a 7mm drive.
Just get a Sandisk Ultra II or Samsung Evo 850, both will be fine :)

        • thanks!!!

        • @cwongtech: My SSD arrived 1 day later than the laptop! but I have to wait for replacement for the laptop though..

    • Yes you can, and it's far cheaper DIY.

    • +2

ThinkPads are usually very serviceable. Google "E460 maintenance manual" and you'll find instructions on how to replace internal drives & memory. For E series there's one single plastic panel at the bottom you need to remove to access the components.

It's cheaper to upgrade RAM or SSD yourself. RAM deals & SSD deals.

      • Thanks, very useful! Going to jump on it soon, I just don't know how long it will take for them to ship it since I gotta have it by 17/6 for overseas trip. Are they pretty fast on shipping?

Lenovo ? Really ? who buys that ??

    • +1

      LeNOvo

      I'm writing from a Lenovo laptop…

      • +1

In my opinion, Lenovo are second only to Dell.

The only other brand I would even consider is ASUS, but I'd definitely pick Lenovo or Dell in most circumstances.

        Source:

Dell laptop that has survived 6 years of hell without an issue, and still is my primary laptop today.
ASUS laptop that has survived 9 years of taking to and from school every day, then taking to and from work everyday, now to using as our band's backing track for live performance. Only replaced the hard drive with an SSD and it's still quicker than alot of brand new laptops off the shelf.
Family with Lenovos that also have been going strong without repair for years.

    • According to this article (which was the first informative looking link in google), about 23% of all people who bought laptops in 2014. http://www.crn.com/slide-shows/mobility/300072817/the-10-bes…

      • -1
        • That has been fixed and it is super easy to do a clean install of windows on this, which wipes away anything a manufacturer can sneak in , it is not a big concern anymore . .

        • @kamban:
Just wanted to point out that's not correct, as per the linked article:

August this year, it transpired Lenovo had loaded laptops with unwanted malware that couldn’t be removed by wiping your computer.
This malware was hidden in the laptop’s firmware, and abused the anti-theft feature in Windows 8 and 10. Whenever the laptop booted up, the executable would be extracted from the firmware at boot-up and installed. Because it was in the firmware, it was persistent.
Lenovo have stopped shipping laptops with the dodgy firmware, and have issued replacement firmware for affected laptops.

Quite a concerning revelation, but that said I would still be all over this if I were in the market for a new laptop.

        • +1

@SeeKayDee: woah , I didn't know that as well , based on articles I read back then , it was in the windows installation and not the firmware / boot . That is far more malicious tbh …

        • Yep, companies mine data.and water is wet

  • My mate wants to edit and play 4k video. Would this laptop be ok if plugged into a 4k monitor? If not could someone please recommend a decently priced machine? The whole 4k editing capability requirements confuses me.

    • Wouldn't recommend it, ultra low power Dual Core CPU and very low end GPU wouldn't be suitable.

      Decently priced is relative

      • Thanks mate.

    • E460 only has one HDMI output which might do 4K at 30Hz. Alternative you might want to look for USB3 docking stations with Display Port.

      • Thanks mate

    • +1

Generally if you want to edit 4k video and actually be able to put effects, filters, titles or anything else that will require real time rendering to display changes without having the manually render after any change, then your friend will need to increase his budget significantly.

I'm using a 970 (won't get that level of performance in a laptop under $3k) in my main PC gaming rig and I don't even like the performance with 1080 timelines once loaded with effects/filters/transitions/titles ect.

But as always, you need to check the compression codec as something that shoots in ProRes or MXF containers (generally professional level) are generally very storage heavy but very light on CPU/GPU usage. H264 on the other hand is generally the opposite, very light on the storage but requires a lot more CPU/GPU power to decode on the fly and will bog down any system fast as soon as you start loading up the effects.

It's all about the codecs really.

      • That's some great info right there. thanks heaps!

    • -1

You need raw power for that. Much cheaper to get a desktop. Otherwise, look at a gaming laptop around $1500 mark

  • What are the dimensions and weight of the laptop with and without the power supply?

    • Dimensions (W x D x H)
      Aluminum: 339 x 239 x 21.8~22.9 mm
      Plastic: 339 x 239 x 22.1~24.4 mm
      Weight Starting from 1.9kg

Pretty sure it would be the plastic dimensions, so the slightly thicker specs.

  • Sigh….d@mn1t TA!!!
Still holding out for a nice price drop on an XPS13 (there's some in the Dell outlet today for 1899)
But…I've lusted for a Lenovo for soooo long for my small business….
    Must….resist…..

    • +3

I'm holding out for a repeat ThinkPad Yoga 460 deal. I really want a flip-back laptop deal.

      • I wouldn't turn away a nice X1 Carbon deal either…..
        Current 'deal' is 2124.15

        • +1

Carbon X1 user for 18months. Carbon X1 is great for mobility and power. Now they've gotten rid of the moronic touch pad display F keys at the top they're even better.

However. It can barely power any external screen. Everything slows to a crawl as the graphics chug. I'd love a good external video card solution for when you're at a desk. There are a few options, but none of them are very easy.

        • @ChickenTalon:
          Thanks for that insight.
At the moment, I never put into an external monitor bout I DO rely heavily on connecting to Pretori projectors or TVs to present.

An XPS or X1 for me would be PURE business and mobility. I'm a management consultant so all my work is heavy base M$ apps and web browsing.

Most of people issues with laptops on here don't apply to me as I need it for work and not gaming or music/video production.

  • +1

Would have got this if not for the Battery life on Wifi Browsing being 4h 52min … Based on previous experience that figure would halve in a year .… Decisions Decisions , should I not care about battery and snap this or just forget it . ..

    • If battery is removable you can just get a spare one.

      • It's an inconvenient compromise 😞
        Ta for suggestion mate

        • Agreed. Just get a mac air or ultrabook.

  • I heard people saying good things about Leonovo's T model keyboard…how's the typing experience on this model?

    • +1

Seems fine to me, with one major caveat: the Fn button is in the bottom left corner, where Ctrl should be.
(There is a BIOS option to swap them, but then the labels would be wrong, and the Fn button is a touch small too)

And one minor thing: the arrow keys are not full size. They're bigger than half size though, and have been fine for me.

    • -1

Meh. Thinkpad keyboard sucked after x20 (Sandy Bridge) range. They're not complete garbage, but thinkpad enthusiasts won't touch it, ever.

  • It seems the general consensus is to avoid this laptop for graphics intensive usages. In that case, is this machine purely for things like running Office?

    • +1

No, this will run many, many more programs than that. Programming, watching videos, that sort of thing works great on it. This laptop is as good for gaming as you can get for under ~$1100, it's just that the resource requirements for gaming are on a whole other level in comparison to everyday tasks.

But yeah, AA games from the last 3-4 years aren't gonna work well. If you want to be playing the latest games, then you'll have to shell out more for a desktop or gaming laptop.

      • There are many, many better options for 1100. You can find 960m equipped laptops for 1100. There are laptops around the same price as this that contain the 950m which is significantly more moreful than this Lenovo.

Look for the Dell Inspiron 7559 on eBay if 1100 is your budget.

        • Yeah looks like I exaggerated a bit, thanks for the info. That said, the main point is still the same: This deal isn't bad for gaming in particular, it's just that you're unlikely to find proper gaming laptops in the $800 range.

        • @SoresuMakashi: unless you go second hand

  • +5

I bought this laptop earlier in the year. After a few months of using it i really hate it. Paying over $900 I really thought i didn't need to worry about performance for a few years, but it just felt so slow. I know it's got a HDD which i should replace(it wouldn't let me switch to SSD (error) ) but even the touchpad clicks are very on and off. the bezel is god awful, and the 1080p screen has got a couple of backlight bleed. Would not recommend.

Edit: Also why is the Fn button in place of the CTRL button? Worst decision ever.

    • Mmmm is this true??

    • My ancient Lenovo has the FN button in the same place. I believe old Thinkpad(when it was manufactured by IBM) had a same keyboard layout too.

  • Any x1 carbon deals going ?

  • +1

This is dirt cheap. I got T430 with i7 and 16gb ram and 240ssd refurbished for $580. But would have got this instead if I hadn't purchase that.

    • Green.
      Green with envy.

    • That was the last series with an optical drive in it, wasn't it…

      • Not sure. Well yes it does have optical CD drive.

      • +1

did you add something in extra? :/

        • +1

Yes, but only addition $17 to upgrade to Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260, 2x2, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo adapter

  • Any idea why the cashrewards link would send me to a 1x1 gif and not to the product page when I try to click through? (This is when I click the Shop Now button on the cashrewards page).

edit: managed to finally get it to work. Not sure what was going wrong, but all seems fine now.

  • Trying to buy but keep getting this message "Sorry, now in system maintenance.
Welcome to come back later." anyone else have the same issue?

  • Great deal. Does any one know how long the delivery takes ? I am planning to buy it for my brother who is currently visiting me from India. He will be in Melbourne until end of next week. Also does any one know my brother can claim GST if I buy on my credit card ?

    • +2

I had the same query, checked with Lenovo sales rep (this is with the wifi upgrade and Win 10 Home config):

"The model Ships in 6 business days and the delivery takes 3-5 business days from the date of delivery."

Same situation re: purchasing on my CC for someone else (my parents in this case). Billing details will need to be in your bro's name as it appears on the invoice and TRS will need to see this. Lenovo cross checks the name on the CC used with the billing name entered during checkout and won't accept if it's different. Even tried Paypal no cigar. Ended up opting for direct deposit which gives you a few days to pay.

Also a word of warning, purchased an X1 carbon late last year and Lenovo didn't provide an official invoice with the GST amount specifically stated on the invoice. They just provided order confirmation and payment receipt. Had to request an official invoice whichthey only provided after I'd left the country (I'd submitted my original request several weeks before leaving). Wrote them a letter though and they refunded the GST portion in the end, still annoying though.

  • Hi team,
I've usually used my laptop for a lot more than browsing, streaming video and spending money I shouldn't on Ozbargain deals.
However I recently picked up a decent camera from a deal here and am now interested in editing my shots (Lightroom). I'd also like the ability to crop and splice together my go pro vids (1080HD). My current laptop doesn't handle either of these functions.
I know it's been mentioned that this isn't appropriate for video editing but I'm not sure if that is referring to the basic entry level stuff I would be doing, or full on video enhancement.
This certainly satisfies the listed requirements for Lightroom, but I'm sure those are minimums, how should this perform?
Same Q for playing around with the Go Pro vids?
    Thanks for any help!

    • +2

It can certainly edit video. It just won't be as fast as dedicated machines. Lenovo have a good returns policy iirc

  • Thank you TA, I order one … finally patient is paid off. Thank you once again :D. I'm a happier man now

  • what's its weight? i can't find this in the website..

    • Over 2 kg for sure

    • website says from 1.9kg

  • Any idea if it's possible to order without an OS?

  • +1

2+kg, not for uni or portability
not the best 1080p screen, ok for price
build quality not that good, flexes to where it's not supposed to flex
pretty bad drivers (personal experience, smartaudio sucks and requires you to specify what the device you plugged into the jack was each single time and has an audio limiter that resets every time, occasional intel graphics stopped responding but has recovered)
bad battery life (me and mate both start at 100%, using matlab and basic office apps, after a few hours his MBP hits 69% while mine reaches critical (10%)(i know that is a pretty shitty metric but bear with me))
    excellent keyboard
    excellent horsepower
    excellent I/O
    (with SSD) excellent boot/load/application times

would be suited for, as said, business solutions. maybe occasional portability but would be suited for a more non-move-around-everywhere lifestyle

    • bad battery life (me and mate both start at 100%, using matlab and basic office apps, after a few hours his MBP hits 69% while mine reaches critical (10%)(i know that is a pretty shitty metric but bear with me))

Well people do get Windows Ultrabooks just for Excel in the business world, so I guess Windows wins in terms of "Real Excel" :P

2+kg, not for uni or portability

      Yeah, 2kg isn't an "ultrabook" class, it's a standard 14" weight.

Just picked one up with the upgraded wifi adapter. Thanks OP!!
