  • Excuse my ignorance, but the 32GB ROM is like an SSD?

    • yes.

    • +2

likely emmc ,double normal hdd speed and half ssd speed.
      if lucky 2/3 ssd speed

    • +1

Thanks, ROM's were different / had a different meaning in my days

      • +1

I think you are right still.

      • +2

They still have the same meaning; read only memory

But when you speak Chinese the meaning changes

  • good price for x5 cpu

  • How do you activate Windows?

    • If it is anything like the TV sticks that come with non-activated Windows 8.x, you will need to buy a key from Microsoft ~45USD.
Windows will work fine without activation (my TV stick with 8.1 worked for ~2+ years, until I decided to update it to Windows 10), but …
      (i) You will get constant notifications stating that "this version of Windows isn't activated". <— Annoying but not a major issue
(ii) You won't be able to install/activate other Microsoft software <— May not be a problem for you, but I don't know your situation
(iii) You won't be able to Upgrade the OS <— Unlikely to be an issue any time soon

    • Mine came activated using the KMS method. You won't need to buy a key.

  • Looks decent for a light weight desktop and steam streaming box.
Does it have usb3 (specs say so) or the remote (don't see included?)
Anyone used a similar windows box on 2G ram?

    • +1

I use the 3736f version with 2 gig ram which is good enough (not for gaming)

test run in shop the one with 1 gig is a pain…. 2 gig ram is livable
even my old x200T business laptop has 2 gig ram and similar speed with x5 (slightly faster for lenovo)

I have an 8300 and it's great as a tv box and torrent client for downloads. the 2gb ram means it's 64 bit cpu but mine came with 32 bit Windows 10 ….. no point with 2gb ram and 64 bit. runs kodi Netflix and other entertainment centre functions fine.

    • +1

      No remote or usb3

      • Thanks all for the responses. Tempting. Would love usb3 for a docking station though.

  • A lot cheaper then my Brix which I was thinking of buying a second for bedroom

  • Could this be used as a simple Plex server?

  • This will do nicely for the new tv - I don't like watching Rupert.

  • +1

I posted the last deal. I only bought it for streaming, kodi and some light browsing. Also, because some streaming apps were limited in resolution in android. Streaming works great, although the wifi is cr@p and that's being kind (same on all these cheap boxes right?). I have a range extender next to it and it's excellent now. Browsing is very slow, but okay for occasional use. Kodi is fine and I use it to stream the footy with an add-on. I'm not really into the specifics of high res movies and codecs etc, so I can't help there.

  • Off topic - I'm having a raspberry pi3 with kodi hooked up with 2tb segate hard drive with has HD videos, it doesn't play and gets hung over all the time kind off frustrating.. Is their a way around? Worst part is I have to do hard restart when ever this happens.

Does buying this box be helpful with kodi install considering it has 2gb of Ram and better processor?
    Thanks

      taken to private messaging

      • issues appears to be with h265 encoded MKVs, hoping that upgrading to openelec 7 beta will fix this playback issue for them.

  • Is kodi pre installed?

    • Just do it yourself, it's windows 10. Basically a simple laptop minus the screen and keyboard. Simples.

  • Do any of these sites have dual NIC versions of these going cheap? I want one for a pfSense box but don't want to spend 2x the price just to get a second NIC (and USB NICs are either as much as the difference or the 2 cheap 100mbit I bought get VERY hot)
