AmEx Platinum Edge - $195 Annual Fee: Bonus 10,000 Points & Free Flight

1300

AMERICAN EXPRESS PLATINUM EDGE

I doubt there are many ozbargainers out there without one of these cards. They are brilliant for points earn at supermarkets & the low annual fee is easily offset by the free flight. - The free flight is with Virgin and is Basically a 'Saver' level fare. So wherever you see saver availability on the Virgin web site, you should be able to book that flight if it's an approved route. The flight includes baggage.

I will post the standard deal details, but I need to point out that where this deal shines is if the the applicant uses a referral link. Using a referral link increases the points bonus by 5000 & reduces the first year annual fee to $0 (fee has gone up to $195 since am 4 July) That is pretty much in line with the old priceline platinum edge, except I believe this is better as the points on offer are more (15,000 vs 13,500), and to trigger the bonus points, you don't have to spend at priceline (which was restrictive for many).
So if using the referral link, the referee will receive 30,000 points and you will receive the extra 5000 Points. (It is easy to set up a referral link and add it to the wiki once you have your card)

Any regular Ozbargainer will know of the value of Statement credits, and this card is a great way to take advantage of them. There are usually a slew every month, and then there's also shop small every year.
See below for some recent (albeit expired) examples.

    • Same, mine got credited to me today (less than a day after calling them) and removed from the amount owing on my statement.
Still waiting on my extra 20,000 points from referring a friend, but that's another battle.

      • Do let us know how you go with that. :)
Maybe they don't award referral points until the card fee has been paid?

        • I've called them a couple of times about it now.
They are now saying that after the person I referred meets the $550 spend I will get it.
I'll keep following up about it though, once a week or so.
20,000 points is a decent amount of money!

          @theguyrules:
Shouldn't it be 30k for you?
That sucks though. Seems like quite a lame excuse from amex.
I got my referral bonuses after people applied (before they got their cards)
I really hope they come through for you..

        • @Bunnycat:
Oh I mean that im missing 20k points. As they've only given me 10k.

Good to know that some people get it straight away. I'll call again today I think.

        • @theguyrules: Are you certain your friend applied within the timeperiod? I had one referral credit on 2nd July that wasn't 3 x (and the explanation from AMEX was that they hadn't applied during July). Like Bunnycat, in my experience, the referrals have all credited as they should, and at the point of approval (no waiting for min spend to be achieved) so odd that you have a problem.

          @The Champagne Mile:
He applied on the 11th of July and got his card on the 15th of July.
So definitely within the July period.

  • Are the "Member Points" for the card in this deal 1:1 equivalent to Velocity Points? I only just realised the 3 points/$ quoted for supermarket is in member points not velocity

    • Yes transfer from MR to velocity at 1:1. There are periods in the year (usually once or twice) when they give you a 15% bonus. So 100 MR then = 115 Velocity :-)

  • A friend of mine applied after the $0 annual fee got removed (had $195 annual fee and 15000 bonus points on application referral page). Gave Amex a call and they agreed to waive the fee, acknowledging that it was a "known error".

The AMEX customer service really is excellent. Called up and told him about the fee, he straight away apologised it and removed the fee. Great experience

  • Held off applying after 5 July as soon as I saw news about the first year fee not being waived. Wonder if it is worth applying for this after all?

    • Also wondering this. Would be great if so
I'd need to cancel my Velocity AMEX to make sure I get the points bonus I suppose.

    • See above, many got the fee removed after contacting customer care.

    • I can understand AMEX waiving the fee for people who applied around the start of the month, around the time when there was confusion about the annual fee. However, the fee has been prominently displayed for many weeks now, so would be surprised if AMEX continued to keep waiving it indefinitely.

I know someone who applied on 18 July and they got fee removed with a simple call. I think so many people started calling up Amex in the past few weeks that it has gotten to the point where they're just waiving the fee now without checking the application date.

      • or just get this for no annual fee. No CPA check.

  • Does anyone know if the member rewards can be converted to QFF points, and what is the rate? Thanks.

    • cannot transfer to qantas.

      • sad times. ok thanks, I guess Velocity is fairly good too.

        • The only AMEX issued card that can transfer to Qantas is the Platinum Charge - it comes with membership to the 'Membership Rewards Ascent Premium' program. Having said that, many people would value Krisflyer, Asia Miles and SPG as better value redemption options anyway, so you have many good options on the table.

        • @The Champagne Mile:

My Gold card is eligible for Qantas program. I have 150k points waiting to be transferred.

        • @The Champagne Mile: Also, the Amex Qantas Discovery, which accrues Qantas FF points. Not exactly transferring though, but still end up with QFF points.

Hi Bluesky. Yes, plenty of AMEX cards that you can earn Qantas on. My comment was limited to point conversion / transfer to Qantas. Eastern Culture, which Gold card do you have, is it a business product? My understanding was that the Platinum Charge is the only card which provides Membership Ascent Premium (which in turn is the only way to transfer to Qantas - source I am going off is http://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/american-express-m…) but interested to know if there are other cards that offer this.

          @The Champagne Mile:

the gold card that was posted on ozbargain in 2012 via CPA association.

  • Can someone confirm whether they were able to get $20 off $40 spend from David Jones by purchasing a DJ gift card? I've tried purchasing a Woolworths gift card and didn't get the $15 off $30 spend (possibly due to the transaction description having the word "GIFT CARD"). Not sure if this is the same for DJ.

  • Anyone had any chance getting the fee waived for those applying later in the month?

    • Yes, see my comment a few posts up

  • Is it likely the no annual fee for the first year will be introduced again do you think? Wondering whether to sign up to one now using someone's referral link or whether to wait for an announcement on a repeat of the deal. ING's 2% cash back is finishing up after next month so need to look at other cards.

    • The previous no first year annual fee offer was around 4 months before this one. Given the fiasco with this time's re-introduction of the annual fee, my thoughts are that Amex may be reluctant to waive the fee on such a good card. However, if you're willing to wait a few months to see if the coast is clear, that's probably the best option. Otherwise, feel free to use our referrals.

  • got my annual fee refunded. Thanks OP

  • Is anyone here looking to sell their plat edge amex free flight? I'm buying 2 flights off ozb Dacs and looking to buy another 2 flights for a family of 4! Please PM me if you are selling :)

    • are you hoping to all redeem together? If so, just be careful as you may find that there is only limited availability (i.e. might not be possible to get 4 award seats on the same flight).

      • Thanks for the headsup. And yeh- hoping to redeem all together. I called up Amex and they said there is more than 9 seats available (can't tell exactly how many). It's for travel later in the year so hopefully we've gotten in early enough :) Do you have a ticket to sell me??? :D

  • This deal is superseded with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/261537 or needs to be updated with the increased bonus point offering.

  • Are people still managing to get this fee waved?

  • Signed up mid Aug, got my bonus points this week. I already signed up for the QF Amex back in March, and got bonus points for both cards.

Edit: Had to pay the annual fee though.

  • I signed up mid-August and after calling them they said they are aware of 'issues' where the annual fee has been charged when it shouldn't be for new customers. He said my annual fee would be waived even though I signed up after the deadline. Looks like anyone who gets charged should just call up.

  • AMERICAN EXPRESS has done a huge underhanded move and REMOVED FREE FLIGHT without publicly announcing it for any new members that apply!

    • It's still listed on the Amex website. Care to elaborate?

      • If you are a member log into your account and go to refer a friend and copy/paste your own referral link into the browser.

Mate that works for Amex told me that they received an internal memo, so any referrals the new members wont get a flight, instead $200 credit.

If you are based out of WA, this isnt enough even for a 1 way flight let alone a return.

  • So, if we are an existing member and haven't redeemed the free flight yet, we still get it?
