That was quick lol, thanks once again.

  • +2

    Thanks very much!

Amex is bringing back their game…i made the right choice to get a visa/amex pair

    • +1

Poor you. Ozbargainers must have more than one pair.

      • Poor uni student and all

  • +24

If you are a bit unsure about what to buy at places like Rebel, just go buy a $50 gift card for each AMEX you have and buy something at the next sale with them to save even more.

Before someone starts about gift cards ETC. it has been widely noted and personally experienced that AmEx does not know or seen to care what you buy and will give you the credit. 😄

    • +1

If you are a bit unsure about what to buy at places like Rebel, just go buy a $50 gift card for each AMEX you have and buy something at the next sale with them to save even more.

      Or flip them on gumtree/ebay.

      • +4

        Not sure why the negs?

        • +4

          Australian's do not like entrepreuererships

      • +3

Hm, I don't really see what's wrong with what you've just said (in response to your negs). It becomes a win-win if you flip them, especially if you're selling them to someone who doesn't have AMEX who can now get some discounted gift cards off you..

I guess the negative is some people are gonna feel like you wasted one of the allocations of the offer as it's limited to a certain number of cards, but I'm sure you are not alone in doing this…

      • +1

Gift cards are not worth the face value when you sell them. You lose minimum 10% or more.

        • You lose minimum 10% or more.

It really depends on the quantity. Suppose you have a $100 DJs gift card - anyone can buy it for $90 on sites like aglrewards, entertainment book, etc. Offering a 20% discount is only going to save the buyer $10 - most people would put it in the too hard category. You'd really have to offer a 30-50% discount to make it worthwhile for someone.

On the other hand, if you have a $1000 giftcard, a 15% discount is likely to be snapped up very quickly.

The one exception seems to be on Ebay US - where gift cards regularly sell for face value or even more. I think this is just a slick money laundering operation in action :)

    • The same would work at Supercheap Auto I take it?

      • Yep, same works for pretty much all of these AMEX statement credit deals.

    • that is so smart, I assume you have to buy the gift cards in store?
or can they be purchased online?

      • check their online website to see if they sell it if not go instore and ask them or just buy it. then report back.

    • Do you any of the stores sell general visa gift cards which can then be used in any store?

      • +2

Aussie Farmers Direct and Estee Lauder might

        • Don't think they have as online only.IMO,Bing Lee and Supercheap Auto might have, small chance though.

      • Don't the fees on the visa gift cards, kill the deal?

        • Fee is around $6, if purchasing from Bing Lee with a $50 cashback, you are still ahead.

      • +1

No at both Bing Lee & SCA. Both only sell their own brand gift cards in store.

        • Thanks for the info.. I was contemplating whether to fly to Sydney just for the 3rd party gift cards if Bing Lee sells them!

    • FYI I went to Rebel today (Doncaster VIC Westfield) and bought a $50 gift card on one of my AmEx cards and got the email within a minute. Of course I still have to wait and see if the $15 credit is coming but I will assume so.5

      • +1

Can confirm getting the $15 credit for spending $50 on a Rebel gift card. Did this on two cards and got credit for both.

  • +1

I wonder why there is actually never any offers directly from my cards (charge, edge and reserve). I have to always manually enrol all my cards.

    • log in via the amexconnect site prior to going to the manual links

      • Doesn't work for me, I never have any offers on any of my cards :(

        • How long have you had these cards? I get all and extra offers on my charge and reserve. I also get all normal offers on plat edge.

        • @deztini: I've had all of them since about March.

        • @yycan: maybe call up the charge concierge, they always sort all my enquiries pretty quick

  • Why not this happening last month when rebel has 30% off under Armour

    • +1

Very soon…. Under Armour will be 30% off at Rebel on weekly basis when Decathlon open their first store

  • +2

Warning, my first experience with Aussie farmers direct was terrible.

    • What happened?

      • +10

        1) One item was out of stock, took 2 phone calls, 2 emails and 4 weeks to get refund. You would think it would be automatic in their system. Apparently I was told it takes 3 business days to get a reply!
        2) Sausage meat tasted great but the skin was just so thick I had to suck the meat out, and I'm not exaggerating
        3) I change my order to "Once off" order on the website but apparently it didn't register in their system and I ended up getting paying for second delivery.
If you are planning to try them out, make sure you call them after you place an order to ensure its a "One off" order and ask them to send you an email or invoice for proof.
I'm all for supporting Aussie Farmers, but if the system is broken. Not worth the hassle

    • +4

I second this. I placed a once off and they increased the price between placing the order and sending the delivery. I was then told how to avoid it in future. I had to threaten a chargeback to get my money back (after half a dozen emails)

      • How did they suggest to avoid the price increase?

        • Their system charges when the delivery starts. I shopped the previous week of specials, and set delivery for the soonest day (happened to be in the next week of specials). They essentially said you have to order and receive in the same specials period to ensure you will get that price, otherwise it could be updated.

  • Does it work with SCA on eBay?

    • +7

      Only if there's a 'pay-on-pickup' option.

If you pay via PayPal, the merchant is PayPal - not SCA.

      • wooo if that's the case then i might be able to use the ebay voucher from previous deals
        not bad!

        thx

  • Does anyone else have problems saving on mobile browser?

    • I have in the past but not today.

  • +1

Can someone please explain which banks to get an AMEX credit card?
I have seen so many offers and not sure how to get this AMEX and offer like above.

    • +8

The best Amex deal at the moment is the Platinum Edge. Free for the first year with 15,000 free/bonus points if using a referral link. This card gives 3 points per dollar at supermarkets, 2 per dollar at gas stations, and 1 point per dollar everywhere else. Additionally it also gives you a free return Virgin flight each year (even with the first year being free). If you're interested, I will gladly give you my referral link (as this greatly helps me out with bonus points too).

EDIT: So apparently the Platinum Edge isn't free for the first year now ($195 per year). The next best card in my opinion is the Amex Velocity Escape card, which gives 1 point per dollar on every purchase, except for 2 points for Virgin purchases. This card has a $0 annual fee, so you will never be charged. Again this card offers 15,000 bonus points through a referral link (which I can give you if you're interested). These are the 2 cards I own, though I predominantly use the Platinum Edge as I personally feel it's worth the $195 a year.

      • +1

I would argue that the AMEX Essentials might be better than the Velocity Escape card, because with the AMEX Essentials you're earning straight into AMEX Membership Rewards, which is better (more flexible, no expiry, can take advantage of 15% Velocity promo transfers) than the Velocity Escape card. Keep in mind that AMEX Membership rewards points can still be transferred to Velocity at a rate of 1:1, and the 15% promo I was talking about refers to some promotions that Velocity do where you get an extra 15% points on top of what you transfer across.

However, no bonus points offer on AMEX Essentials ($50 statement credit after $500 spend instead, some people may prefer this).

        • +1

Correction: Actually, via referrer, the AMEX Essentials bonus is $75, as opposed to $50 without referrer (if one spends $500 in the first 2 months).

Completely agree with your comment about Amex Essentials being more flexible. Points can also be transferred to 8 airline programs. Or to offset card balance, at 1000pts($1000 spend) for $7.41. Effectively 0.741%.

      • you can get this card for $149 if you are a CA
or the Gold amex for free

        http://www.charteredaccountantsanz.com/Site-Content/Members/…

        • but isn't there annual membership fees to be a CA so you rather pay the extra $50. why pay hundreds to save $50?

        • @suicine94:

Nope - no annual fee if you're a CPA - DH and I have both had one for years!

        • @suicine94:

Ok I reread what you wrote and yes there is a fee to be a CPA (of course as it's a professional association) but you have to pay that to be a CPA anyway. You don't pay it to get the AMEX lol. You pay it to be a part of the CPA.

You don't pay an extra fee to have the AMEX card.

        • @diannesa:

really? I have cpa platinum edge. I pay 150 a year instead of the 195… how you get to no pay anything???

    • +3

Any Amex can be registered for these deals. It doesn't matter whether it is a bank issued card that comes with an existing Visa/Mastercard, or whether it is issued directly by American Express.

The American Express Platinum Edge is a great card, but the initial attractiveness of the card just changed overnight as they removed the annual fee free for the first year. If you are looking for a card to keep long term, then this is a good card. If you are just after a card to be able to access these offers, then maybe the American Express Platinum Rewards could be a good choice. First year annual fee free ($80 p.a. thereafter), access to American Express Rewards and 2 points per dollar on Supermarket and Petrol purchases.

    • Some deals are AmEx issued cards only but not these ones.

The ANZ issued Frequent Flyer Black is a great card. I got it when it was fee free for the first year, I'm not sure off that is still the case.

      • yeh i had that card too - $425 annual fee - omg. dont know what the use is. I just used the two amex lounge visits

    • I'd recommend either Velocity Escape card or Qantas Discovery card as your first AMEX card. Both are annual fee free, with low credit limit(which is generally a good thing), let you take advantage of these offers and accumulate some points at the same time. I chose Qantas as I found its points are of a little better value(giftcard conversion) than Virgin.

IMHO, the true benefit of Platinum Edge is just its annual free flight. It really is just a benefit of buying a domestic flight with fixed price each year. So if you are sure you will travel(by Virgin domestic flight) at least once a year or you can easily cash in the free flight, then the card is probably good for you. I personally find it more of a hassle to get tied down to a 'mandatory' flight each year to justify the annual fee. For its other benefits, like points from supermarket shopping, you can easily find alternative ways that are more attractive.

      • +3

you can easily find alternative ways that are more attractive.

Are you referring to buying Gift Cards (especially Woolies) for 5% off?

The awesome thing about the Platinum Edge and buying the GCs for 5% off (from CashRewards) is that you still get 3pts/$ as if you were making the spend in-store, so the discounts/points bonus can indeed be combined.

About the free flight. Don't use it? Sell it on Ozbargain*. Lots of people (especially Perth based people who fly to the East coast) would willingly buy it for $250+.

*Technically against the T&Cs to sell.. but it can be booked in anyone's name.

        • The awesome thing about the Platinum Edge and buying the GCs for 5% off (from CashRewards) is that you still get 3pts/$

I was questioning this with my friend only yesterday - neither of us were able to confirm as we don't have the Platinum Edge card (yet). So purchases from everydaygiftcards.com.au still count for 3pts/$? If so that is awesome

        • +3

@PBG: I questioned it for a long time myself too (before I got a Platinum Edge).

I tried it shortly after I got the card and yes, I can confirm you do get 3pts/$ from everydaygiftcards.com.au (which is where CashRewards redirects to.. right?).

        • @illumination: Thanks for confirming this. This makes the Platinum Edge more appealing for grocery shopping. The only option I can think of to beat it is purchasing Woolworths giftcards with RACV membership in store using a 5% cashback debit card. Obviously the Platinum Edge option is more convenient. That being said, I found the free destinations for flights from Melbourne(where I live) are less appealing than Perth, so I'd rather having someone book the flights for me when needed.:)

        • @illumination: Thanks for the confirmation!

    • Best Amex deals are currently Platinum Edge, Platinum Velocity, and Qantas Ultimate, with bonus points from referrals:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

    • Hi, you can get this from Amex directly, instead of the bank.

This will show you all the cards offered by Amex, and you can choose features you desire, e.g. no annual fee, get Qantas/Velocity points, free flight etc.

Plenty of good info about Amex cards, by other OzB members, so check them out. Especially, if travel and redeeming flights are priorities.

I have only analysed thoroughly the fee-free cards, in particular Essential and Qantas Discovery because I have held them for a while. So below is some info on them.

Up till now, I don't redeem flights, hence, cash rewards are what I go for. Also was too lazy to sell unused flights, or apply for cards that were fee-free only in the first year, then cancel. So fee-free cards were attractive: they give rewards, eligible for Amex cashback offers, and no annual fees to worry about.

I have worked out the cash-equivalent rewards for Amex fee-free cards for redeeming $ or supermarket vouchers (in case this interest you).

      Velocity: 0.556%
Qantas Discovery: 0.569% (If you join Qantas AutoRewards, you will get $20 for 3000 points - which is 0.667%)
Amex Essential: 0.741% (simply use points as cash against card, 1000pt=$7.41)

Best card order reverses if redeeming flights a priority: e.g. the Qantas card may be better value than the Essential. Note: the Essential card allows point transfer to a choice of 8 airline programs.

Feel free to ask any questions, if they are on these fee-free cards, which I know well. Any other cards, other OZB members are more knowledgeable to help :-)

BTW. Someone recently asked the same quesion here.

If you find a card that suit your needs, consider applying via a referrer for more bonus points:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

      Good Luck! :-)

  • Would these and any future Amex offers apply if I get the card from this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255731

    • +2

      Yes.

      • Thanks Turd That took some load off.. :-D

    • +1

Certainly, all Amex cards get offers - although some offers may appear on some cards, but not others. This is when manual enrollment links, posted by kind OzB members are invaluable :-). So, you simply manually enrol a card for it. Too bad, they are not always posted. Recent discussion on this topic is here, if you are interested.

      • +1

Thanks a bunch bluesky. That thread does answer a lot of questions I had on Amex cards.

        • Glad it was of help :-)
Feel free to ask any other questions. When I was new to this (still am wrt to much), many OzB members have educated me, hope I can do the same for others in areas I am familiar with.

  • +3

Just price matched a Dyson DC45 (Harveys are doing it for $298) for $300 at Bing Lee, bringing it effectively to $250.

    • very good, will try in burwood binglee

      • +2

Burwood NSW is the worst binglee IMO, old, people there with no passionate at all.

        • +2

          unprofesional. unlike us ozbargainers…

    • +7

I used the online chat function. Sent through the link to price match, chose the store and then got sent an invoice to show in store. No need to deal with people with no passion!

    • +1

What did you tell them to charge $2 extra on top of $298 to make it $300 :)?

      • +2

        Damn straight. THIS IS OZBARGAIN!!!

      • +1

You can usually just ask them to charge an extra $2. And if they ask why you can explain haha

  • Tried to buy an eGiftcard on SCA website, and it doesn't accept Amex! Called up customer service and they said they don't take Amex anymore! Naturally I was flabbergastered, and their response was "we have asked that the amex icon be taken off the site"
Even tried the physical gift card, but the only option is delivery (no in store pickup) for $3.40 but I am an Ozbargainer so I don't pay delivery :)
Edit: I never actually tried processing the physical gift card while it was still in the SCA website (the egiftcard actually redirects to givex.com) so perhaps the website may still work

    • +4

Just buy gift cards in-store? I have done that for the last AMEX deal.

      • yeah, I was just hoping I wouldn't have to get off the couch :P
It's interesting how the online store doesn't accept Amex yet the stores do

    • I was able to pay Using amex when joining the SCA Club yesterday morning directly on the SCA website!

  • Thanks

  • Anything worth to buy in SCA?

    • $1 degreesers

    • +2

I haven't seen any notable sales as of now but the gift cards give you that 'time-delay' effect.. Effectively stacking AMEX offers with great deals later in the year.

      • Yes but just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't expire.

  • +1

what do people use their AMEX point for? whats the best way to use them? I always use them to get fuel gift cards I think 13k points for $100

    • +1

Sell it here 1 cents per point

      • I'll give you $10000 per point, seems fair we are profesionals. LOL @ For sale things here.

    • +1

In the past i have converted to Velocity during the bonus periods. If you didn't want to redeem points for flights you could use them for Helloworld (instore or gift cards) and travel booked through American Express Rewards. They give you 1 cent per point (10k points for $100) so better rate than redeeming for other giftcards.

      • thanks yea travel sounds good. i'm not a velocity or Qantas member my points are only amex points… if I wana book the Jetstar I need Qantas FF account?

can you explain how this helloworld booked through amex rewards work? I can ask helloworld to book a Jetstar and pay them at 1cent per point?

        thanks heaps for the help.

        • Looks like that's the case.
There's one literally in the same complex as my work, so that's handy.

        • While i have never done it, you should be able to go into a Helloworld agency and use your Amex reward points to pay the amount. It doesn't matter whether its flights, accomodation, cruise etc.

          More Details

    • You can use Amex Rewards Points to pay in part or in full for flights at Webjet (10,000 points = $100 of travel), or for anything at David Jones (13,500 points for $100 value).

      • that's really good. so at super markets you get 3 points per dollar which means $100 travel for $3333 spend so like 3% back…. better than 2% IGN Orange cash back.

        • +1

Yeah, and if you use it to buy a Woolies egift card with 5% Cashrewards discount then you spend $3,166 and get $100 worth of Webjet travel = 3.17%. So yes better than ING Orange if you were going to book through Webjet anyway.
That's the theory anyway, though I haven't actually used it myself yet.

  • +1

IF we are to buy $100 SCA gc, can we purchase less than the amount and use the remaining later day ?

    • Certainly. Although, beware that the cards do expire in 1 year (I believe). And there is no easy way to check the expiry online. I think you can call them up, or ask at the counter - to find out the expiry date.

Edit: Correction, their giftcard T&C seems to suggest one can check balance/expiry online

3.7. Validity and expiry of Gift Cards:

3.7.1. Your Gift Card will be valid for use up to the expiry date shown on the Gift Card. Any balance that remains on a Gift Card will not be available for use after the card's expiry date.
3.7.2. To check the expiry date of your Gift Card, call 1300 55 33 80. You must convey the 19 digit Gift Card serial number and the Access PIN to our call centre operator. For balance enquiries online, you will be required to enter both the Gift Card serial number and Access PIN on the designated page of our website prior to getting access to the card information.

Having said that, I cannot find where to check the balance. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
