Which is plain common sense, to always shop prices. But a neg because of 1 item in the store is just ridiculous. If a whole store jacked prices up to then offer a discount (a la Dick Smith) then sure, neg away, but 1 item out of the 10s of 1000s in a store is just crazy, especially as the deal stated Off RRP before the sale started.

Out of curiosity, how much was that stereo yesterday?

I get this warm fuzzy feeling when buying car parts. Very excited to go on a shopping spree and the AMEX deal just sweetens it more.

  • Just bought myself a new car battery (needed one anyways) $145 down to $116 and then had loyalty credit posted to my club account over night due to the sale so I ended up only paying $65 for the battery! :D

    • Woah man please explain how! Battery literally died this morning. Well last night I suspected it was dead, and this morning confirmed.

I've been a club plus member for ages, never got more than $5 benefit out of it.

      • i bought a fair bit from SCA Last week so if the items go on special within 14 days? SCA credit the difference to the club account! :D

        • Aha! Makes sense thanks for clarifying :)

  • AMEX can be a blessing and curse. Only really needed $50-$60 of stuff, but knowing if I spent $100 I got $20 back, i had to find extra stuff to buy. Ended up buying this awesome ferrari scooter for $40! Cant find it on supercheap website though?

  • Anyone here had any experience with Toolpro tools ? Ok ? / rubbish ??

  • I've been wanting to get some car paint…never discounted. Its a win from me!

  • Can anyone recomend a good drill?

Nah. But I can help you out with a good screw.

  • Is replacing a car battery a simple task or if I have to ask should I not even try and just take it to Kmart? My car is a Ford Falcon 99 AU model.

    • +2

Very simple. If in doubt there are probably heaps of YouTube videos to help you out.

    • +1

Quite simple and a Falcon will be simple. There will be a million guides on the internet.

Just make sure to remove negative terminal first and know your radio security code if you need it.

And be very careful to not short the battery in any way with anything metal like tools, brackets etc.

All that said, Supercheap will do it for free for you in the carpark.

      • Hmm thought it was free but seems it starts at $10 to fit.

    • +1

Now's the best time to learn a new skill!

Just youtube a tutorial if you're unsure, but as shonky mentioned, remove negative terminal first, then take the positive off. Replace battery and connect in reverse order (i.e. connect red first, then negative at the end).

  • are car batteries ok to sit idle in a garage - waiting for my old one to die and though maybe i should pre purchase

    • +1

They don't like to be stored in the cold. I wouldn't buy one until I need it.

    • Definitely not. Actually drain faster in hot Conditions. Even with a trickle charger I've found batteries still need to be moved/ shaken to keep them in good nick. Give your battery a top up with water and a charge once every two months and it will last 10years+ easily.

  • Can anyone recommend a car stereo system (with USB port) - I have a ford fairmont 2003 and the car stereo port is double size - budget is around $200

I went into Supercheap at Hervey Bay in March. They were having a 20% off sale. The day before I went in and there were a lot of reduced items. When I went in on sale day they had inflated the prices, dropped them 20% and they were now more expensive than pre-sale! B@stards!

I found the same thing with our local one,, was going to purchase a jump starter but it was $12.30 more expensive even with the discount than what it was a couple of weeks ago

Thanks OP! Bought a Century battery DIN85L and memory minder. $310 less 20%, paid with 2 amex cards each registered with the $20 credit back offer. $208 - bargain!

Such as asset to the ozb community! :)

  • Some good deals on products that don't get discounted frequently but as usual excludes stuff ordered on the parts guide.
    Oh well.

  • Damn anyone know anything about car batteries?

Went in to replace mine, which is about 6-7 years old.

My car isn't in their book for recommended batteries and I didn't take the old one in. But it's a 1L engine from the 80s so I figured the basic SCA one (which is made by century anyway) would have enough oomph. 290 cold cranking or something. The guy seemed concerned that it might not be the same 'type'. It's a 40 and he said the batteries are made differently, I should get the same number as whatever was in there before.

Got home and the current one was a type 51 whatever that means.

Anyone know if that matters or if a battery that says 'for small cars' will be fine for my very small very old car? Don't want to plug it all in if I need to return it. Wonder if they'd honour the 20% off if I had to exchange on a later date…

    • Just buy the biggest battery that physically fits in your battery cavity with the terminals in the right configuration (and size) . Also, check Big W with cashrewards egift cards. Batteries in the $60 range.

      • +1

        Thanks for the reply.
At $87 the SCA was pretty good value. Put it in and car fired up instantly. Cold morning too!

  • Bought lots of autoglyms today. Thanks OP!

  • Even though I read this post during the week and was keen to get something, I just subconsciously expected that it was for the whole weekend and missed out

Don't worry man they've got a new 20% off deal online. Save20 is the code.

      • -1

save20 requires min spend of $99

  • +1

Got my 20% off credit after buying something a few days earlier. Need to make sure I spend it - of course that's what they want as it means you'll probably spend more.
